Abstract:
In this paper, our analysis will focus on the concept of stereotype based on the notion of “bêtise” (stupidity) that French essayist and novelist Belinda Cannone deplores. We will study how she rethinks the “bêtise”, after Flaubert who defined it as the art of wanting to conclude. In La bêtise s’améliore (2007) Cannone gives the example of Flaubert, making the “bêtise” the doxa that touches all areas of social life. The central element of “bêtise”, according to Belinda Cannone, remains in many respects conformism. It is a question of seeing how, in Cannone’s discourse, these two notions – “bêtise” and conformism – are articulated and allow her to redefine her ethos of the engaged intellectual in the public space.

- The Italian Parliament has recently passed a new reform of local utilities. Compulsory competitive tendering will be the rule, while direct public management will be confined only to very special cases. The article discusses the scope of the reform and its main weaknesses: the excessive width of the focus, the uncertainty on auction design issues and the lack of a proper regulatory framework besides the tender. Policy reform recommendations are proposed with the aim of informing the next phase of the policy, namely the translation of the frame legislation into detailed regulation.Key words: local utilities; liberalization.JEL classifications: L9, H4

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the main goals of preventive conservation (PC) is to reduce the risk of possible damage produced by the interaction between tangible heritage objects and their conservation environments. This work aims to introduce the European standard EN 15757:2010 as a potential tool for implementing effective museum PC, and it details the potential contributions of both active environmental control and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in this regard. An application of this strategy is proposed by means of a case study of the conservation of two historical violins, part of a small but significant museum collection in the City of Genoa dedicated to Paganini, whose value is inestimable. According to the standard, monitoring of environmental parameters was carried out for more than four years in the Paganini Hall of Palazzo Doria-Tursi Museum. A remote-control system was implemented, installing digital sensors in the room and in the two showcases. The data were continuously collected through an integrated platform for supervision, monitoring and shared management, based on web-cloud-IoT technology. The analysis of climate data and the assessment of the “historic climate” led to the installation of an active control system on the display cases of the “Cannone” violin and its historical copy. The intervention resulted in a cost-effective improvement in the conservation conditions of the two objects, with an efficient system of warning and safety alarms and a protocol of resolution actions still active and ongoing. The application of IoT systems in monitoring and controlling the indoor climate of heritage collections facilitated the care of the objects at a cost reduction for the institution.

Bischi, Matteo.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Watchful Waiting: U.S. Neutrality Law in the Atlantic World: 1815-1819. This paper addressed the ways in which American statesmen responded to the diplomatic crisis of American citizens serving as privateers for the rebelling countries of South America during the South American Wars for Independence. Most specifically, this paper analyzes the strategy of President James Monroe, who crafted a elastic and flexible policy of "watchful waiting," which allowed the state to capitalize on events and situations in U.S. favor without bringing the nation into war with Spain. From a position of international weakness, U.S. statesmen were able to take advantage of the crisis caused by American privateers and, in the process, strengthen the state economically and territorially. Money Bags and Cannon Balls: The First Bribery War and the Expansion of American Presidential Power This paper analyzes the expansion of presidential power witnessed during the Thomas Jefferson administration during the First Barbary War of 1801-1805. During the Early Republic, American shipping faced piratical actions from the various Regencies of the Barbary Coast, Morocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. Jefferson sought to break from the noncombative precedent of his Federalist predecessors by directly engaging the Barbary corsairs. in taking the fight to the Mediterranean, Jefferson transformed the role of the executive. The demands of war forced Jefferson to empower the presidential role of commander in chief in unprecedented and long-lasting ways.

Abstract:
In this thesis we are exploring the possibilities to use new and modern interfaces to control industrial robotic hardware, in specific a single water cannon system called TARGA. Using a iterative Design-Build-Test cycle we have been able to build three different prototype interfaces for controlling this robotic water cannon. One touch based, one gesture based and one gamepad interface has been designed, built and tested on users. We found that with modern interfaces, touch, gestures and gamepads we are able to create user experiences easier to use than the standard physical water cannon joystick. Although our user tests showed that the standard joystick still was the preferred interface to use by the users we did find that these modern interfaces can act as great complements to the already existing interface for increased usability.

Abstract:
The most important criterion in industrial production processes is to control the required product quality and comply with the standards pre-described for the application during any stage of the process. This control begins from the entry of raw material to the plant and continues with pre-determined points. Mainly two different types of inspection and analyses are used to examine the material quality and content. These are physical and chemical analysis. In most of the production plants above mentioned analyses are made in related laboratories of the plant. Therefore, it is necessary to have &

Abstract:
Amerens Labadie station consists of 4 coal fired 600 megawatt size generating units. Unit 1 installed water cannon furnace cleaning devices during a spring outage this year. Water cannons were selected to clean the deposits that result from combustion of Powder River Basin (PRB) coal at the Labadie power plant. This paper describes the evaluation of methods of cleaning furnace walls and the selection, installation, and startup experience with water cannons. Cleaning the furnace results in an increase in boiler efficiency that is translated into improved heat rate and improved cost of plant operation. Benefits from water cannon installation are described along with the problems encountered. PRB fuel combustion results in tenacious deposits that inhibit heat transfer on furnace walls. PRB coal typically has a lower ash fusion temperature than bituminous coals which leads to ash slag formation in furnaces that have been changed to PRB from the fuel the boiler was originally designed for. Often the deposit from PRB fuel is of a minimal thickness, however the reflectivity of the deposit creates a high barrier to radiant heat transfer. High Furnace Exit Gas Temperature (FEGT) indicates poor heat transfer in the furnace area and this increases the formation of slag in convection passes. Cleaning of furnace surface is critical to maximizing the heat absorption of the furnace and reducing the FEGT. The increased clean capability of the water cannons compared to existing wall blowers will be compared in this paper.

Full text
Abstract:
Engineering mechanics analysis of cannon pressure vessels is described with special emphasis on the work of the late US Army Benet Laboratories engineer David P. Kendall. His work encompassed a broad range of design and analysis of high pressure vessels for use as cannons, including analysis of the limiting yield pressure for vessels, the autofrettage process applied to thick vessels, and the fatigue life of autofrettaged cannon vessels. Mr. Kendall’s work has become the standard approach used to analyze the structural integrity of cannon pressure vessels at the US Army Benet Laboratories. The methods used by Kendall in analysis of pressure vessels were simple and direct. He used classic results from research in engineering mechanics to develop descriptive expressions for limiting pressure, autofrettage residual stresses and fatigue life of cannon pressure vessels. Then he checked the expressions against the results of full-scale cannon pressure vessel tests in the proving grounds and the laboratory. Three types of analysis are described: [i] Yield pressure tests of cannon sections compared with a yield pressure expression, including in the comparison post-test yield strength measurements from appropriate locations of the cannon sections; [ii] Autofrettage hoop residual stress measurements by neutron diffraction in cannon sections compared with expressions, including Bauschinger corrections in the expressions to account for the reduction in compressive yield strength near the bore of an autofrettaged vessel; [iii] Fatigue life tests of cannons following proving ground firing and subsequent laboratory simulated firing compared with Paris-based fatigue life expressions that include post-test metallographic determination of the initial crack size due to firing. Procedures are proposed for Paris life calculations for bore-initiated fatigue affected by crack-face pressure and notch-initiated cracking in which notch tip stresses are significantly above the material yield strength. The expressions developed by Kendall and compared with full-scale cannon pressure vessel tests provide useful first-order design and safety checks for pressure vessels, to be followed by further engineering analysis and service simulation testing as appropriate for the application. Expressions are summarized that are intended for initial design calculations of yield pressure, autofrettage stresses and fatigue life for pressure vessels. Example calculations with these expressions are described for a hypothetical pressure vessel.
