Abstract: This cohort study type was carried out in Campinas-SP, in Jardim Santa Mônica District, and had in view the annual incidence of toxocariasis and its socioeconomic risk factors and its association to breathing and dermatological signals and symptons. The studied population was constituted by seventy two childrens, from 4 to 15 years old, who attented to the reagion teaching institution's early period and who presented negative serology in a first imunoenzimatic serological inquiry (ELISA). To all of them, it was applied a closed questionnaire, which aimed to identify socioeconomic variant. Throughout a year, another questionnaire was also monthly applied to all of them, wich aimed to identify if the child had presented any sign or symptom of breath or dermatological disease in the previous thirty days. This information was monthly crossed with the one obtained in these children's clinical reports in the health basic unit to which they were connected. After six months, new serology was accomplished in all children and three of them presented positive serology to T. canis infection. Other three ones left the cohort, by abandon, after this second assessment. After more six months, new serology was achiwed and, from sixty six children analysed, two turned out to be T. canis seropositive. At the end of the study, it was possible to estimate a rate of 7,2% cases of Toxocara canis infection for each hundred children/year. It has not been verified a substantial difference in the incidence of infection relate to the variants analysed in this study

Full textThe aim of this study was to determine Guardian sp. prevalence in household dog population on different districts that form Provincia Constitutional del Callao in Peru. Fecal samples were collected from 385 apparently healthy dogs of different ages that were selected depending on the zone where their owners lived. Stool samples were processed by spontaneous sedimentation technique and we found that 9,35 ± 2% (36/385) of the canine population in this study were positive to Giardia sp. cysts. Relationships between cysts detection and stool samples characteristics, provenience, sex and age of the dogs were analyzed by logistic regression; significant statistical relationship was found between Giardia sp detection and stoll samples physical characteristics. Results show a moderate Giardia sp. infection in dogs which evidences a zoonotic risk that makes necessary the setting of educational programs in order to prevent Giardia sp. transmission especially to infant population. Giardia sp. is more frequently detected in diarrheic or soft stool samples that in normal ones, this is the reason why owners of dogs with that stool characteristic should ask veterinarian to determine the cause and to give an appropriate treatment to that problem.

Abstract: The association between toxocariasis, asthma and weight gain has not been studied. Considering that probably there are differences between the various risk factors for asthma, as well as weight gain and taking into account that toxocariasis is a disease that mainly affects children, it is important to describe the association between these three variables. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between toxocariasis and prevalence of overweight and obesity and asthma in children ascribed in a Health Basic Unit (UBS) in Campinas in São Paulo States. The results of this work are presented in the chapter that includes the article, "Association between toxocariasis, asthma and body mass index in children", it is a cross-sectional study from a documentary analysis made in the clinical reports of 116 children seen at UBS Jardim Santa Mônica in Campinas between the years 1996 to 1998. The following information was obtained from clinical reports: weight, height, age, sex, presence or absence of asthma, the serologic test for Toxocara canis, presence or not of eosinophilia. To evaluate the anthropometric z scores. To study the associations between positive serology for Toxocara canis, asthma and BMI, we used the Wilcoxon test for two samples. The age range was from 2 to 14 years. Regarding gender, 57.8% were male. The prevalence of asthma was 37.9% and children with positive serology for T. canis was 54.3%. Comparing the distribution of BMI z of children with positive serology for T. canis with those not infected, it was observed that the z-scores were higher for children with asthma and toxocariasis. This work points to the existence of an association between infection with T. canis, asthma and increased body mass index in children. Toxocara infection is associated with two diseases of major relevance in pediatrics, asthma and obesity, which require the attention of all health professionals

Full textCanine giardiasis, parasitosis caused by Giardia spp., is a problem with great impact in canine health recognized all over the world to be cause of digestive upsets, specially in young animals and it is also recognized the potential zoonotic risk which involves mentioning the possibility of being reservoir in the epidemiology of human giardiasis. The object of the present study was to assess the prevalence of Giardia spp. in domesticcanines in the South Cone of Lima City, Perú. To this end 204 domestic canines fecal samples from the districts of Surco, Barranco, Chorrillos, San Juan de Miraflores, Villa Maria del Triunfo y Villa El Salvador were recolected, stratified according to the socioeconomic level of the owners. Samples were analized through thechniques of Direct examination and Spontaneous sedimentation for detecting Giardia spp. The general results indicated that according to Direct examination test 8,82%±3,89 (18/204) of samples were positive to Giardia Whereas through Spontaneous sedimentation test, the prevalence was of 15,69%±4,99 (32/204). Spontaneous sedimentation technique showed to be more sensible than Direct examination, founding significative statistical differences through Kappa-McNemar test. It was no found significative statistical relationship between socioeconomic level and presence of Giardia When using Logistic Regression Test. It was not found significative statistical relationship between presence of Giardia and dog genus. Puppies shower a higher percentage of positivity than adult animal and it was found significative statistical relationship between animal age and Giardia infection in Spontaneous sedimentation results and a statistical differences. With these results it was proved the existence of a moderate prevalence of Giardia spp. infection in canine population of South Cone of Lima City; suggesting that canine giardiasis in Lima would be a serious problem of Public Health.

Abstract: Parasitic diseases in dogs, produced by nematodes (families Toxocaridae, Trichuridae, Onchocercidae, Ancylostomatidae and Strongyloididae) and cestodes (family Dilepididae), are a frequent occurrence in the clinical veterinary medicine. These helmintic diseases are important zoonotic infections, prevalent in urban areas; infectious diseases caused by protozoans (genus Cystoisospora and Giardia), also have acquired great importance for the animal and humam health. The close relationship between men and dogs, and the growth of canine population in the urban areas, has made some of these parasitic infections an important problem of Public Health. Thus, the knowledge of its prevalence is an important way of prevention and control. This present work purposed to determine the prevalence of these infections in dogs from the city of Hortolândia (Brazil), as well as evaluate the risk to the human health; feces samples (n = 250), blood samples (n = 66) and samples from necropsies (n = 50) were collected and examined in the understood period between the years of 2006 and 2008. These samples came from stray dogs (uncontrolled), adults (from one year of age), captured and kept in the dependences of the Center of Zoonoses Control (CCZ) and evaluated by the traditional methods of laboratory for diagnosis of helminths and protozoans. The necropsies had been done in animals submitted to the euthanasia, after veterinary evaluation. The overall prevalence of endoparasites in this work was 87,2% in feces samples and 100% in necropsies. The parasites observed in feces samples were Ancylostoma sp. (79,2%), Giardia duodenalis (20,0%), Toxocara sp. (16,8%), Cystoisospora sp. (16,4%), Trichuris vulpis (11,6%), Dipylidium caninum (1,6%) and Toxascaris leonina (1,2%). The parasites observed in necropsies were Ancylostoma caninum (72,0%), Dipylidium caninum (64,0%), Toxocara canis (44,0%), Cystoisospora sp. (30,0% in necropsy's feces samples), Trichuris vulpis (20,0%) e Toxascaris leonina (2,0% in necropsy's feces samples). There was statistically significant difference between gender for the nematodes Toxocara spp., with higher prevalence in males (p = 0,0137) and Trichuris vulpis, with higher prevalence in females (p = 0,0015). There was statistically significant difference between seasons for the nematodes Ancylostoma spp., with less prevalence in spring (p = 0,0001) and Trichuris vulpis, with higher prevalence in winter (p = 0,0039). The data demonstrated the high prevalence of these parasitic infections in adult dogs, with changeable ages, from one year, until senile animals, mainly in animals under adverse life conditions (abandonment, malnutrition, illnesses); they also suggest the high degree of environmental contamination and, consequently, the risk to the human health (directly, by the contact with these environments and indirectly, by the exposition of the domiciliated dogs, when in contact with these environments or stray dogs).

Full textThe objective of this work was to evaluate the individual efficacy of the fenbendazole and the pyrantel pamoate against intestinal nematodes of dogs. Thirty six nestlings of dogs were used, being eighteen males and eighteen females up to six months of age, coming of the kennel of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Viçosa, selected through fecal exams of Willis, simple sedimentation and count of eggs per gram of feces (EPG). being used the animals that presented mixed infection for Ancylostoma sp. and Toxocara canis. The animais were distributed in three groups of twelve animals, being a control group, a group treated with fenbendazole, 100 mg for Kg of body weight, orally, in an unique dose, and the other with pyrantel pamoate, 5 mg for Kg of body weight, orally, in an unique dose. During the whole experimental period, the dogs received commercial ration and water ad libitum . Fecal exams of Willis, simple sedimentation and EPG realized in the day of the treatment (0), 24 hours after the treatments (1) and in the 3, 5 and 7 after the treatments. In the seventh day, the animals were killed and necropsied for collection of the adult worms and the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract was submitted to digestion process, in hydrochloric acid to 3%, for research of immature stages. The results showed an efficacy of 99,89% of the pyrantel pamoate against the A. caninum with reduction of 100% of EPG in the seventh day after the treatment, and against the T. canis the effectiveness was of 71,65%, with reduction of 80,73% of OPG. The fenbendazole showed an efficacy of 93,19% against the A. caninum, with reduction of 96,22% in the EPG and an efficacy of 82,1% against the T. canis, reducing the EPG in 95,71%. The results demonstrate the efficacy for the control of the A. caninum with the two drugs, with higher effective of the pyrantel pamoate. To the T. canis control the drugs shower lower efficacy when administered separately in the doses recommended commercially.

Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules produced by micro-organisms that consist of a hydrophilic portion and a hydrophobic portion. The hydrophilic portion consists of mono-oligo-or polysaccharides, proteins or peptides and the hydrophobic portion contains saturated, unsaturated and hydroxy fatty acids or alcohols. Many micro-organisms produce surfactants with antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, antiparasitic and herbicide use in medicine and agriculture. In this sense, producing a biosurfactant by Streptomyces sp. DPUA1559 isolated Amazon region, grown in medium containing soybean oil and waste frying peptone was performed using a 22 factorial design to investigate the effects and interactions on the response variables surface tension, emulsification index and production yield. The production of the biosurfactant was confirmed by reduction of surface tension. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was 10 mg/ml and the average surface tension at the focal point was about 25,34 mN/m in a yield of 1,17 g/l. The isolated biosurfactant showed emulsification index 89% to 95% engine oil and engine oil residual. The kerosene emulsification showed a 40%, while the diesel oil was not emulsified effectively. For vegetable oils (corn, canola, soybean, and sunflower) emulsion was formed around 47%. The isolated biosurfactant was stable when subjected to extreme environmental conditions of pH, temperature and NaCl concentration and showed no toxicity when tested against the micro-crustacean Artemia salina and seeds of vegetables lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.). The characterization of biomolecule analysis demonstrated the chemical composition of 20% protein and 38% carbohydrate. Molecular characterization on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis SDS-PAGE showed the biosurfactant a single protein band and 14.3kDa character acid. The spectral analysis method by FT-IR-Atr revealed a chemical structure composed mainly of peptides with different polarities. The strains of Microsporum canis isolates from dogs superficial mycoses were susceptible in the presence of biosurfactant isolated presenting a growth inhibition at concentrations of 1.9 to 1000 μg/ml.

Abstract: Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) have been acting as invasive exotic species in many instances, disturbing and modifying natural ecosystems in many ways. Still, little is know about the dogs population size near areas of conservation interest and if that can influence dog¿s chance of using those areas. In addiction, despite their close relationship with humans, little is know about the people¿s attitudes towards the dog population. Thus, this study intends to estimate dog populations sizes in urban and rural areas near forest patches, to investigate the people¿s attitudes towards dogs in those areas and to quantify dog frequencies inside forest patches. For that purpose, questionnaires with local residents were conducted to obtain information about dogs¿ number and the owners¿ attitudes towards caring for their dogs. Censuses on the areas were conducted to estimate numbers of unrestricted and stray dogs. Scent-stations were installed inside the forest patches, at different distances from the edge, to evaluate the frequency of those animals and see if it differed between patches¿ edge and their interior. Having a dog is more common in the rural area, as well as keeping them unrestricted. Yet, dogs¿ population is larger in the urban areas studied, due to high human densities. Also, in those areas there are stray dogs, which is uncommon in the rural areas studied. The dogs¿ population size in the surroundings don¿t influence their presence inside the forest patches and in both landscapes (rural and urban), dogs seems to be an edge effect. Despite not being very common inside the patches other than in its edge, these animals seem to occur more frequently than wild carnivores. For that reason they can represent another important negative impact cause by the human presence in those areas. Domestic dogs¿ direct effects on wildlife still have to be studied in Brazil, nonetheless these potential impacts can be minored by preventing dogs from entering the forest patches. To do so, the residents¿ attitudes towards dogs, in the surrounding areas, are of extreme importance

Full textBrucella sp. are the causative agent of brucellosis, a zoonotic disease of global importance. Their correct identification is very important to help the control and eradication programs, or to carry out an epidemiological tracing. In the case of human brucellosis, treatment is done with a combination of two antimicrobials, rifampin being one of the possibilities in this association and commonly used; however there are case reports of resistance to this antibiotic. This study aims: (i) typing the Brucella strains collection belonging to the Laboratory of Animal Bacteriology, DeMIP, ICBS, by Bruce-Ladder; (ii) test its antimicrobial susceptibility to rifampin by E-test and microdilution broth methods; (iii) evaluate the phenotype of super expression of efflux pump; (iv) investigate the molecular events that can lead to the development of resistance analyzing the rpoB gene; and (v) detect the presence of the bepC gene. The Bruce-Ladder PCR confirmed the identification of all the reference and field strains tested and classified all strains isolated from cattle, as B. abortus. There was a divergent result in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between the microdilution broth test and E-test in 21% of the strains examined. Eight of 52 strains tested showed reduced susceptibility to rifampin by the broth dilution method. It was observed MIC reduction in the presence of carbonyl cianida m-clorofenilhidrazona with the strains with reduced susceptibility to rifampin, indicating a probable action of an efflux pump in this phenotype. We found two gene mutations in the rpoB gene who aren't involved with the resistance phenotype. The bepC gene was detected in 100% of the strains tested (susceptible and resistant to rifampicin) indicating that is not probably related to the phenotype of resistance observed.

For Examination of Water and Wastewater 22nd Edition, 2012.
The main purpose of this work was the limnological monitoring to verify the water quality of the Limoeiro stream water in the city of Presidente Prudente - SP, and the Pirapozinho River located in the city of Pirapozinho - SP from 2006 to 2013. In this study, I analyzed the behavior of these water bodies when they no longer received domestic sewage without treatment from the referred cities since the construction of wastewater treatment plants. The choice of parameters monitored was made based on the criteria of cost, time and labor. Similarly, I selected the sections in the channels of the river basins in order to coincide with those of my routine work. The methodology used was based on work instructions found on Standard Methods For Examination of Water and Wastewater 22nd Edition, 2012. The results obtained during the studies pointed to an improvement in both sections and the records of COD, BOD and DO were the variables that most significantly recovered in these water bodies. Based on the results, from 2008 onwards the streams that did not receive urban sewage showed significant recovery of its purity, with their water less polluted and their quality standards within their environmental framework classes
