Abstract:
The name of John McLeod Campbell (1800–1872) is well-known among historians of Scottish church history. A pastor who spent most of his life in Glasgow, Campbell is remembered best for his deposition from the Church of Scotland in 1831 because of the preaching of unlimited atonement and of assurance as belonging to the essence of faith. Among historians of doctrine, Campbell's notoriety stems from his later work, The Nature of the Atonement. The book aroused controversy from the moment of its publication. Among the highly original themes set forth by Campbell, one continues to stand out as the most perplexing and controversial: Campbell's teaching on Christ as providing a ‘perfect response’, a ‘perfect repentance’, a ‘perfect sorrow’ and a ‘perfect contrition’ before the judgment of the Father on the sins of humanity.

Abstract:
Humour within the letters and personal writings of Romantic poets and authors has remained relatively neglected. Similarly seldom studied is the Scottish Romantic poet Thomas Campbell (1777–1844). Calling into question John Anster’s assessment of Campbell’s letters as a ‘weary heap of good-for-nothing evidence’, this article will attempt to give his unpublished epistles their rightful prominence in studies of Romanticism. Campbell’s correspondence reveals humorous descriptions of cooks kicking cats, which jostle with declarations of explicit disgust against ‘second-rate writers’, and detailed accounts of Campbell’s numerous illnesses. By shedding light on the use of humour in his letters, this article will challenge current preconceptions of Campbell, and show how he used humour to forge and maintain relationships in both his personal and his business correspondence.

Abstract:
Joseph Campbell is the mythographer of the last century who has congenially opened the mythological universe to both scholars and to a wide range of people searching for pathways to enlighten their lives. His elixir of life was to help people “see myth as a reflection of the one sublime adventure of life, and then to breathe new life into it” (Campbell, 2003, p. xiv). The hero’s journey is his gift, his “ultimate boon” (Campbell, 2008, p. 29) for the human condition and social world. It represents a universal motif which runs through virtually all kinds of change, transformation, and growth. The main objective of this special issue of the Journal of Genius and Eminence is to explore the multi-faceted potential of the hero’s journey and perhaps shed new light on it. The introduction gives an overview of Campbell’s ultimate boon and a summary of each of the 12 articles that follow. Distinguished scientists and outstanding practitioners have joined this journey in tribute to Campbell and the 30th anniversary of his death. The contributors take us far and wide, exploring different ways to explore Campbell’s thoughts, allowing insights into the nuances and subtleties of his mythological world, and striking new ways to illuminate the Campbellian universe.

Abstract:
David Campbell has been at the forefront of showing how deconstruction, and the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, can help us to think international relations differently. Like Derrida himself, Campbell has eschewed the goal of an ethical theory in favour of an ‘ethos of political criticism’ concerned to question and go beyond our assumptions and limits. In order to continue such an ethos of criticism, to push our understanding of ethics in international relations further still, it is surely important to question the assumptions and limits Campbell himself imposes. It is with this in mind that I wish to take a particular political intervention by Derrida in 1993 and read it against Campbell’s Derridean analysis of the Bosnian conflict which began in 1992.

Abstract:
I have been invited to assess Douglas Campbell's door-stopper of a tome from a theological perspective. Given that this is a work in Pauline scholarship by a leading New Testament scholar, what is the justification for involving a theologian? Clearly, it is because the argumentation of this book is driven by a theological critique of certain key methodological, epistemological and, indeed, ontological suppositions which have functioned to sustain what Campbell calls ‘justification discourse’ – an approach to Pauline interpretation that Campbell argues is outmoded, confused and ultimately incoherent.

Abstract:
Consumerism is a prevalent phenomenon that is already symptomatic in today's society. This study aims to discuss an ethic that supports the existence of a consumer society that was born and developed in a very long historical process. Colin Campbell was the first to speak of the romantic ethic that underlies the consumer society. This study uses the method of literature review. The main reference used is a book written by Campbell entitled "The Romantic Ethic and the Spirit of Modern Consumerism". The author also explores the essence of several other supporting books that provide interpretations and perspectives on Campbell's thoughts. The study results show several important concepts from Campbell's thought, including qualitative individualism, romantic ethics, and self-cult. These three conceptions are deeply attached to the spirit of humanism which became the catalyst for the Age of Enlightenment. Romantic ethical doctrine emphasizes the uniqueness or peculiarity of a person. Humans are encouraged to determine their destiny in developing themselves that are "genius, unique, and creative". As for consumption, it becomes a medium in the process of discovery and self-expression. The Romantic Ethic and the Spirit of Modern Consumerism”.

Abstract:
Literature does not need to be solely confined to text, but can be accompanied by moving images, animation, sound, music, as well as a multi-linear narrative, which has become easier to integrate due to the use of hypertext and augmented reality (AR) technology. One author who readily uses such innovations is Stu Campbell, more widely known by his alias, Sutu. Aside from being a writer, Campbell is also an interactive designer and illustrator who combines art and technology in order to produce unique and experimental works. Campbell is inspired by multiple genres and formats through which he addresses poignant themes, such as memory and its loss, the imminent passage of time, as well as the meaning of identity and reality in our increasingly digital and fast-paced environment. Therefore, this paper discusses the selected works of Stu Campbell in the context of their experimental and technological nature drawing on Paola Trimarco’s discussion of “affordances,” a term originally derived from psychologist James L. Gibson, denoting the opportunities and limitations in certain environments. The works discussed are the following: Modern Polaxis, a multilinear comic in the form of a private journal which depends on AR technology to advance its narrative, Nawlz, a cyberpunk webcomic created on a horizontal interactive digital canvas, and These Memories Won’t Last, a semi-autobiographical webcomic which incorporates music, sound and animation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTMore than 60 years ago, Angus Campbell offered an explanation for why the president’s party regularly loses congressional seats in midterm elections. He argued that peripheral voters “surge” to the polls in presidential elections and support the president’s congressional co-partisans but “decline” to turn out in the midterm. In his turnout-based explanation for midterm loss, Campbell speculated that “bad weather or an epidemic may affect the vote” but largely dismissed weather’s utility to test his theory (Campbell 1960, 399). I revisit Campbell’s speculation and employ a new identification strategy to investigate the “surge and decline” account of midterm loss. I show that as the costs of voting increase—due to above-average rainfall on Election Day—the strength of the relationship between presidential and congressional voting weakens.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis I will be offering an analysis of C.G. Jung’s influence on the theoretical framework of the American comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell. My first main argument will be that Campbell underwent what I am calling a ‘Jungian turn’ around 1968: before this date he was vague and sometimes even dismissive about Jung, while after that date he became suddenly highly positive about Jung’s ideas (particularly about his concept of the archetype). My second main argument will be that this shift in attitude towards Jung occurred because Campbell’s interpretation of Jung changed. Before 1968 Campbell thought of Jung’s concept of the archetype as a ‘closed system’: a completely innate psychological structure that isn’t open to ‘imprinting’ by the environment in any way whatsoever. From 1968 onwards, however, he came to think of the archetype as the equivalent of a so-called ‘open innate-releasing mechanism’, which is the ethologist Konrad Lorenz’s term for a psychological structure that, although it has an innate component as well, is nevertheless open to ‘imprinting’ by the environment. As Campbell’s ideas prior to 1968 had been based on this concept, he realised that his own theoretical framework was compatible with Jung’s to a large extent. My final argument will be that the theoretical position which Campbell arrived at in the final phase of his career (which revolves around the concept of the open innate-releasing mechanism, but which has several other specific characteristics) is the same as the interpretation of Jung put forward by the scholar Anthony Stevens. As Stevens’ work is indisputably Jungian in nature, we might therefore draw the conclusion that it is possible to think of Campbell’s work as ‘Jungian’ in nature as well. However, as there are also some important differences between Campbell and Jung, I am arguing instead that we think of Campbell’s work in the final phase of his career as ‘post-Jungian’: this is the scholar Andrew Samuel’s term for a thinker who may not agree with Jung about every single issue, but whose work is still firmly rooted in his core ideas.

As immemorial reserves of the human condition, the myths are present in all societies. They organize cosmovisions, propose solutions to dilemmas, enigmas and contradictions that the real world cannot solve. As machines of time suppression, as defined by Claude Lévi-Strauss, the mythic narratives do not submit themselves to the linearity of history. Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), centerpiece of this thesis, a north-american born in New York, occupies a place of great remark in the pantheon of mythological interpretations. The greatness of his work is more than recognized, although the comprehension of his ideas still remains shy in Human Sciences. It is a body of work that is open to the various cultural devices which, beyond science, include literature and cinema, the latter being responsible for the popularization of Campbell‟s ideas with the Star Wars series. The thesis invests in the life and work dialogism from a bibliographic incursion; it traces the most representative itineraries of Campbell‟s life (Stephen and Robin Larsen) which led him to discuss the functions and potentialities of myth in contemporary society; it sketches the scenery of science in the interior from which emerges the north-american mythologist; it exposes a synthetic archaeology of the figures which constitute The Hero of a Thousand Faces; it exposes the author‟s arguments concerning his treatment of the recurring themes in mythical narratives (cultural diversity) towards the universality of culture (archetypical unity of the myths); it presents the chronological mapping of the author‟s work in the original editions in English and its translations in Brazil; it exposes and problematizes stemming from the research on the Thesis‟ Database of Capes the resonance of Campbell‟s ideas in the Brazilian scientific production (1990-2010); and it presents, in full, interviews with two experts and translators of the author‟s works to Portuguese. The central argument of this thesis is the indissoluble relationship between the author‟s lived experience and interest for the study of myths, that is, the contingencies of life which illuminate the choice of a study theme, above all those which are rooted in infancy and adolescence. Because he is a transdisciplinary thinker who moved in the dominions of art, literature, science and religion, the polyphony contained in his compared study of world mythologies demanded, from this research, a dialogue with authors from different and complementary areas like Carl Gustav Jung, Jean-Pierre Vernant, Edgar Morin among others. The basic interpretative soil centered on nineteen fundamental works translated in Brazil. The thesis has as a horizon to establish connections between science and arts, towards the constitution of a fundamental anthropology of universalist, complex and transdisciplinary base

The debate about the existence of precursors of language in animal vocal communication is still open. For 10 years, thes studies on guenons have increased because their social system and their visually-closed habitat make them proper models for such a comparison. We have conducted the first series of long term ethological observations on 2 wild Campbell’s monkey (Cercopithecus c. Campbelli) groups, aiming at describing their social organization and their vocal repertoire. Predation appeared as a determinant factor. We thus performed experiments on 7 groups simulating the presence of different predators (visual and acoustic model). The predator size, its hunting technique and the modality of detection influence the behavioral response of the harem’s females and male. Moreover, females produce 5 alarm calls and males combine different loud calls into sequences. Six sequences, contextually determined, have been identified differing in the call composition, order and rythm of call succession. It emerged a repertoire adapted to referential communication with a potential encoding of several messages about the type or eminency of the danger, the type of predator and the emitter’s activity. The difference with a captive population suggests that the vocal determinism is not-totally genetic. Our results reveal unusual proto-syntactic abilities (affixation, semantic combination). If we succeed in the future in demonstrating that these messages are decoded by the group members, we will contribute to challenge the traditional phylogenetic gap associated to the limited vocal abilities of nonhuman primates which oppose them to humans
