Cette thèse porte sur le développement du hip-hop, du skateboard et d'autres pratiques de glisse urbaine dans des départements ruraux. Nous nous intéressons plus particulièrement aux engagements (associatifs ou non) des amateurs de ces activités. Ce travail repose sur une situation d'observation participante de recherche-action dans deux départements, le Cantal et l'Aveyron. Il se propose de montrer que ces nouvelles pratiques sont observées jusque dans des espaces ruraux, témoignant de l'urbanisation de nos modes de vie. Hip-hop et glisse traversent les générations, transcendent les appartenances sociales et culturelles comme les disciplines (sport, art, culture). Ces pratiques illustrent la tendance actuelle à des formes libres et non instituées de loisirs. A la fois pratiques transgressives, libres et intégrées dans un système économique, elles sont traversées de contradictions. Malgré leur popularité, nos observations sur le terrain font état d'un manque de reconnaissance. Les amateurs défendent l'esprit du mouvement et veulent le développer. Parmi eux, beaucoup participent à des associations ou des collectifs. Les plus militants se démarquent par une attitude volontaire, dynamique et contestataire. Ils s'inscrivent dans des logiques stratégiques et utilitaires, associant des visées personnelles et collectives. Enfin, ils sont animés par la passion et leurs parcours associatifs sont influencés par la prégnance de l'affectif<br>This thesis deals with the development of hip-hop, skateboarding and other similar urban street activities in rural French departments, and more particularly with the involvement (both inside and outside clubs or associations) of the practisers of those activities. The study is based on a participatory observation and an active research in two departments, Cantal and Aveyron. It sets out to demonstrate that these new activities can be observed deep into the rural landscape, showing the urbanization of our way of living. Hip-hop and skateboarding transcend generations, social and cultural group identities the same way as other sporting, artistic or cultural activities. These practices illustrate the current tendency towards individual non-institutionalized leisure pursuits and are at the same time transgressive/free and integrated in an economic system, full of contradictions. They lack recognition (as our field researches show) despite their popularity. Wanting to develop those activities further, many practisers are involved in associations or groups. The most militating ones express a determined, dynamic and anti-establishment attitude. They adhere to a strategic and utilitarian logic, combining personal and collective aims. La campagne pour l’élection présidentielle de 2012 a été marquée par le rôle majeur joué par Internet pour s’informer, débattre en ligne, mobiliser ou organiser l’action militante sur le terrain. Ce recours au numérique invite à questionner, sous un nouveau jour, des thématiques centrales de l’étude des partis politiques et à contribuer ainsi au débat sur les transformations partisanes, au niveau de l’organisation, mais aussi des acteurs qui s’y insèrent et l’utilisent. La retraite est généralement conçue comme une institution qui incarne la réussite du modèle social français : les retraités forment une part marginale des bénéficiaires des services d’aide sociale, la France est le deuxième pays de l’OCDE à avoir le plus faible taux de pauvreté chez les personnes âgées, et en moyenne ce groupe jouit d’un niveau de vie supérieur à l’ensemble des actifs. Pourtant, depuis quelques années on sait qu’un tiers des retraité.es touchent des pensions mensuelles inférieures ou égales à 1000 euros dont 74% de femmes. Quel est l’état des inégalités dans la retraite ? Et quelle est réellement la situation sociale des retraité.es ? Alors que la littérature atteste de la réussite exemplaire de la politique des retraites à avoir éradiqué le phénomène d’indigence et de pauvreté structurelle des vieux travailleurs, comment comprendre l’existence de ce nouveau groupe social dont l’existence interroge les représentations sociologiques des formes contemporaines de la pauvreté ? A partir d’une méthodologie reposant sur quinze ans de recherche dont sept années dans le champ de l’expertise retraite ainsi que sur la réalisation d’une enquête menée par entretiens semi-directifs dans une campagne populaire en Occitanie, la thèse propose une sociologie de celles et de ceux que l’administration nomme les « retraité.es modestes ». Située à l’intersection de la sociologie de la socialisation économique, de la sociologie de la retraite et de la sociologie générale, elle propose une analyse compréhensive de la retraite conçue comme un dispositif de régulation des parcours de prévoyance individuels. Cette perspective repose sur un travail inédit de conceptualisation de la notion de prévoyance qui permet de livrer une étude empirique du rôle régulateur du dispositif dans les vies individuelles. En exploitant les entretiens menés auprès de 42 retraité.es et de 12 acteurs institutionnels engagés dans le champ de la vieillesse, la thèse montre ainsi comment le dispositif produit une régulation différenciée des parcours de prévoyance qui opère de façon invisible, corporatiste et familialiste aux échelles collective et individuelle de la vie sociale. Pour en évaluer l’influence dans les parcours individuels, trois phases ont été isolées (l’expérience de l’affiliation, l’expérience de la cotisation et l’expérience de la liquidation des droits) puis comparées dans le récit des expériences vécues des enquêté.es. Cette démarche permet d’identifier trois types de parcours de prévoyance qui permettent de comprendre comment le dispositif produit activement des inégalités sociales dans la vieillesse : le parcours de prévoyance socialisée des fonctionnaires et des salariés, le parcours de prévoyance patrimoniale des professions indépendantes et enfin le parcours de prévoyance familialiste des épouses et les mères. A partir de ces résultats, la thèse propose quatre pistes pour une évolution solidariste de la retraite<br>Pension system is generally known as part of the success of french welfare regime: marginal part of the beneficiaries of social assistance services are retired people, France get one of the lowest poverty rates among the elderly in OECD countries, and national statistics show this group has on average a higher standard of living than active people. However, for a few years a new trend appears showing one third of retirees earns €1000 or less for a monthly incomes's pension, and this situation concerns mostly women. What do we know about inequalities in retirement? And what is the social situation of retired people? While literature emphasizes the historical success of pension policy in eradicating indigence and structural poverty among old workers, what do the existence of this new social group says about French society?

Aujourd'hui, un actif sur trois qui habite la campagne appartient à la classe ouvrière. Cette étude se propose donc d'expliquer la présence et le développement des ouvriers dans l'espace rural, non pas sur leur lieu de travail, comme cela a été fait le plus souvent jusqu'ici, mais dans celui de leur résidence. Dans un premier temps, la question est abordée à l'échelle de la France entière. L'analyse de la place des campagnes les plus ouvrières dans la diversité de l'espace rural français montre qu'elles se situent à deux échelles distinctes dans le processus de déconcentration urbaine : dans les campagnes anciennement industrialisées hors des aires métropolitaines, et dans certaines campagnes périurbaines. Le Haut-Jura constitue une région type pour l'analyse des premières. La vallée de la Bresle en Haute-Normandie, le Roannais et le Choletais lui sont comparés. L'accent est mis sur le caractère marginal de ces espaces, sur l'originalité de leur tissu industriel, et plus encore sur une réflexion relative à leur modèle de développement : doit-il être considéré comme exemplaire, comme cela a parfois été suggéré ? Les campagnes situées à la périphérie des villes industrielles sont traitées à partir de l'exemple de la Basse-Seine. Son étude éclaire les mécanismes qui permettent aux ouvriers d'y occuper une place de choix en dépit du progrès plus spectaculaire des "classes moyennes", ainsi que la structure de la société et son fonctionnement, en particulier les limites du processus de développement périurbain. La progression de la résidence ouvrière dans l'espace rural est lourde de conséquences. Ne participe-t-elle pas à une lente désagrégation de la culture de la classe ouvrière, telle qu'elle a pu se constituer pendant un siècle de concentration industrielle et urbaine ?

Après une présentation du milieu physique et humain, l'étude du système agraire communautaire, du point de vue juridique et structurel (propriété, exploitation foncières, techniques de production) débouche sur l'approche de la crise agraire qui s'exprime par les limites de l'innovation et surtout un gonflement de la surpopulation relative. Face à cette crise la réponse des reformes physiocratiques s'avéra insuffisante et surtout inadaptée. En commençant par la libération du commerce, elle encouragea l'essor d'une économie spéculative, au détriment des innovations productives; elle facilita en outre une offensive de grande envergure de la seigneurie contre les communautés, ce qui eut pour effet d'aggraver encore la crise. La guerre des farines marqua de ce point de vue le rejet par le mouvement populaire de la liberté indéfinie du commerce, et la prégnance d'une économie morale. Qui devait aussi s'exprimer dans les cahiers de doléances. La révolution française fut l'occasion pour le mouvement populaire de se libérer du prélèvement "féodal", et d'engager un vaste mouvement de reprises des usages et des communaux. Mais, dans le même temps, elle devait révéler à la fois une grande originalité des revendications paysannes et de graves contradictions internes. La premier s'exprima par le biais du processus de politisation et les modalités de l'action révolutionnaire encore fortement marques par la culture populaire (culture biblique et carnavalesque en même temps)<br>After a presentation of the geographicla and human environment, the study of the community land ownership - from a legal and structural point of view (property, farmland exploitation, techniques of production) - Leads to the analysis of the agrarian crisis that was revealed through the limited measures for innovation and mostly through a relatively swollen o ver population. To cope with that crisis, phisiocratic reforms were undertaken, but they happened to be insufficient and inadequate. They started by the liberation of the grain's trade ; they encouraged the growth of a speculative economy at the expense of productive innovation. Moreover, they facilitated a large-scale offensive of the nobility on the communities, which in its turn worsened the crisis. The "war of flour" showed how the popular movement rejected the undefinied liberty of commerce. That was to express itself in the registers of grievances. The popular movement seizd the opportunity of the french revolution to free itself from the "feudal" imposition ; it also permitted it to take back the common of pasture and estovers. But the movement was to reveal both original claims and inner contradictions of the peasant's revolution. The former were expressed through the politization of movement and the mode of revolutionnary action, still largely influenced by the popular culture (both biblical and carnavalesque)

Activists and academics alike tend to agree that the republican hunger strikes . of 1980 and 1981 marked an important turning point in the history of Northern Ireland's 'Troubles.' While much has since been written about this period, most of this material has concentrated on the 'high politics' of the various negotiations between the Republican Movement and the British government. Other works have concentrated on the protest activity within the prisons. Looking back at this period, the National Committee of People's Democracy argued that '[p]erhaps the biggest and broadest solidarity movement since Vietnam ... [grew up] around the hunger strike campaign.' Yet little has been written by scholars, journalists or actual participants that focuses on this solidarity movement. How did this movement come about? Who were its movers and shakers? What were its accomplishments? Why did it collapse? This thesis answers these questions and more. I attempt to redress an imbalance in the historical record by telling the story of the anti-H-Block movement -- warts and all.

This thesis offers a new cultural history of State sponsored cultural production in London under the Labour led Greater London Council during the 1980s, bringing the GLC’s cultural policy interventions to the attention of historians of art and culture. The Greater London Council’s Arts and Recreation Committee, and in particular its new ‘Community Arts’ and ‘Ethnic Arts’ Sub-Committees, sought to challenge the Arts Council’s dominant model of cultural sponsorship which aimed to broaden public access to ‘the arts’. The GLC attempted instead to foster a participative ‘cultural democracy’ in London, often centred upon particular political themes and identities. Alongside existing accounts which focus exclusively upon the GLC’s cultural policy discourse, this new cultural history attends to the other side of the sponsorship equation, namely, what cultural forms were prioritised by the various committees, how such policies were perceived by the recipient cultural producers, what cultural texts were produced as a result of GLC sponsorship and how these cultural forms were received more broadly. It explores how the GLC impacted upon cultural production in London, looking to the interrelationship between particular GLC sponsored cultural outputs, whether artworks, murals, posters or films, and wider political and social themes pertinent to that historical moment. In particular, this thesis interrogates cultural forms funded under the auspices of two city-wide campaigns, ‘GLC Peace Year’ (1983) and ‘London Against Racism’ (1984), in order to consider the relationship between GLC cultural sponsorship, cultural production, new social movement activism and democratic participation. Cultural forms of nuclear criticism were funded during ‘Peace Year’ to raise awareness about the GLC’s Nuclear-Free Zone, contradicting central government’s nuclear stance in 1983. These included artist-commissioned poster campaigns and banners, peace murals, pop concerts, community theatre, photography exhibitions and documentary films, including some related to peace activism by women. This case study traces Peace Year’s cultural output to consider the effects of this appeal to London’s nuclear anxieties. The second case study offers a re-reading of the GLC’s new ‘Ethnic Arts’ Sub-Committee’ and its attempts to instigate an anti-racist cultural policy, as part of a broader campaign that sought to address the issue of discrimination in London and across all areas of Council work. It begins by recording a number of the GLC’s initiatives in this area, including its sponsorship of various forms of black cultural production and in particular, the controversial ‘Anti-Racist Mural Project’. Through an examination of contemporaneous and subsequent critical accounts of the GLC’s experiments alongside Council minutes and papers, this account adds nuance to existing narratives by identifying the climate of coexisting and competing discourses at the GLC relating to the state sponsorship of culture and diversity. Ultimately, ‘Beyond The ‘Campaign For A Popular Culture’: Community Art, Activism And Cultural Democracy In 1980s London’ presents a history of the practices and policies of the GLC that is pointedly cultural in focus and attempts to open this field of study to researchers interested in visual culture, art history, community art, identity politics, activism and urban history, alongside those with an interest in cultural policy making at a local government level.

This thesis develops an understanding of how propaganda entered the realm of journalism and popular culture in the United States during World War I through an examination of materials created by the Committee on Public Information (CPI). The CPI was a US governmental propaganda organisation created during World War I to persuade the nation to mobilise for war. Three of its divisions were chosen for this study: the Division of News (DoN), the Division of Four Minute Men (FMM) and the Division of Pictorial Publicity (DPP). Chapter 1 provides a general context for the thesis, outlines the research questions and details previous research on the CPI. Chapter 2 outlines the methods of analysis for interpreting the case study chapters and provides contextual information. The case studies are presented in Chapters 3, 4 and 5. These chapters are structured in the order of context, medium and content, and contain historical contextual information about each particular division, medialogical aspects of its propagated form and thematic groupings created from close reading of CPI materials. A semiotic analysis in the Peircian tradition is also performed on visual forms of propaganda in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 discusses how the expectations of persuasion, truth and amusement relate to each other when mediated in culture, using Lotman’s concept of the semiosphere. This further develops an understanding of propaganda as a cultural system in relation to other cultural systems – in this case, journalism and popular culture. Chapter 7 provides conclusions about the study, outlines relative strengths and weaknesses regarding the selection and deployment of methods, makes recommendations for future research, and summarises the key contributions of the thesis.

Les campagnes du nord de l’Artois, autour des villes d’Aire et de Saint-Omer, sont conquises par les armées de Louis XIV en 1676 et 1677. Le déplacement de frontière qui en découle a d’abord des conséquences économiques, avec la coupure des anciens débouchés que fournissaient les Pays-Bas méridionaux. The master thesis deals with the potential of Czech seniors for Czech marketers. On the basis of secondary as well as primary researches the main elderly consumers' behavioral characteristics, their attitude to commercials and the best practise of communication mix are covered in the thesis. There is also the analysis of the practical example of communication campaign targeting at generation 55+, included its evaluation.

This article proceeds from the observation that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin—two politicians frequently correlated and compared since Trump’s bid for the Presidency—have been remarkably successful in mobilizing support for their politics and in seemingly immunizing their rhetorics against vernacular critique. To work toward an understanding of this phenomenon, we propose to look at how political communication by and around the two politicians draws on forms and venues of popular culture. Both contexts, we will argue, have developed new strategies for the instrumentalization of popular culture, strategies that, while actualized differently in the two settings, revolve around an ‘invective turn’ in political communication—a radicalization of the familiar nationalist rhetoric of ‘us versus them’ that seems specifically fueled by pop-cultural forms. To explore this traffic between pop and politics, this article puts into conversation two case studies: On the one hand, of Trump’s campaign speeches which, we contend, symbolically organize around the logic of agôn—of the competitive game—as it has coagulated in the reality-tv genre of the gamedoc. On the other hand, we look at (state-controlled) pop music in the Russian genre of Ėstrada which, thus our argument, advertises a distinct form of patriotism through the principle of ‘glamour.’ Glamour, in Putin’s Russia, operates simultaneously as a style and as an ideology of self-glorification. The article will outline how reality tv’s logic of agôn and patriotic pop music’s aesthetics of glamour each fuel a qualitatively new orientation of political discourse toward the aesthetically charged, affect-saturated denigration of others and valorization of self.

Cette thèse porte sur les rôles sociaux des réjouissances populaires dans les communautés rurales francophones de l’Amérique du Nord entre les années 1770 et 1870. Elle aborde le sujet de la fête en dirigeant plus précisément son regard sur la festivité. L’objectif principal est de mettre en lumière comment les festivités, que nous appelons réjouissances populaires, influencent le fonctionnement des sociétés francophones nord-américaines. Quels rôles les réjouissances populaires jouent-elles dans la vie sociale des habitants de ces sociétés? Quels impacts ont-elles sur les identités individuelles et collectives? Conservent-elles les mêmes caractéristiques d’une société à l’autre ou s’adaptent-elles à des environnements et à des contextes différents? Comment se développent-elles et évoluent-elles au fil du temps? Quels sont les éléments qui influencent leur évolution? Afin de répondre à ces questions, l’accent est mis sur l’étude de certaines réjouissances populaires au sein de quatre populations rurales d’origine française, c’est-à-dire les habitants de la vallée du Saint-Laurent, de la région de Détroit, du Pays des Illinois et de la Louisiane (plus précisément les habitants d’origine acadienne). En se fondant sur des monographies publiées, des manuscrits personnels, de la correspondance ecclésiastique, de la littérature de fiction et des travaux de folkloristes, chacun des cinq chapitres représente une étude de cas qui permet de montrer comment les réjouissances populaires sont influencées par le contexte dans lequel les habitants vivent et comment la sociabilité festive intervient dans la construction de différentes identités sociales, c’est-à-dire des identités de race, de genre et de classe. Dans le premier chapitre, le regard porté sur les noces des Canadiens et des Louisianais d’origine acadienne à la fin du XVIIIe siècle et au milieu du XIXe siècle fait ressortir que la nourriture, la boisson, la musique et la danse sont très présentes, mais surtout que ces festivités sont le théâtre de nombreux rites de passage s’adressant au nouveau couple, et souvent plus particulièrement à l’épouse, qui permettent à la communauté de contrôler la reconnaissance et l’officialisation de leur union sociale et sexuelle. Dans le deuxième et le troisième chapitre, l’analyse de la guignolée, de l’Épiphanie et surtout du carnaval au Canada, à Détroit ainsi que dans les villages du Pays des Illinois permet de montrer que cette période festive est influencée par le climat hivernal des colonies nordiques et qu’elle demeure un moment fort de la vie sociale des habitants. Elle est, entre autres, synonyme, dans les trois régions, de rencontres, de soupers et de bals au cours desquels les habitants déterminent ceux qui ont le droit de se fréquenter, c’est-à-dire des jeunes issus du même rang social, et ceux qui font partie intégrante de leur communauté et ceux qui en sont exclus, c’est-à-dire des habitants plus démunis (vallée du Saint-Laurent) ou des Noirs et des Autochtones (Pays des Illinois). Dans le quatrième chapitre, l’étude de l’évolution de la culture dominicale des Louisianais d’origine acadienne met en lumière comment, malgré le succès, au fil du temps, de l’Église catholique dans ses tentatives d’imposer la sanctification de cette journée, les bals de maison perdurent, en étant transférés au samedi, et participent à la construction de l’identité raciale de cette population. Dans le dernier chapitre, l’examen de l’évolution des réjouissances de la plantation du mai expose l’efficacité des rapports de réciprocité pour solidifier et renforcer la hiérarchie sociale dans les campagnes canadiennes, c’est-à-dire entre les habitants et un membre de l’élite locale (seigneur ou capitaine de milice). Cette thèse contribue à enrichir l’historiographie de la fête en Amérique française qui aborde très peu le sujet des réjouissances populaires rurales sous l’angle de la sociabilité festive. Elle montre que ces réjouissances sont intimement liées aux aspects contextuels de chacune des quatre régions étudiées, c’est-à-dire la démographie, la présence d’autres groupes ethniques, le climat, la géographie, les rapports genrés, l’économie, la situation politique et la hiérarchie sociale. Les habitants francophones des milieux ruraux adaptent leurs réjouissances populaires aux particularités de leur société, mais elles préservent tout de même, parfois jusqu’aux années 1870, leurs fonctions régulatrices de reproduction des hiérarchies sociales, économiques, genrées et raciales. En d’autres mots, elles sont un outil permettant à ces francophones, non seulement d’affirmer leur identité d’origine française, mais aussi d’identifier clairement les personnes qui peuvent ou qui ne peuvent pas se réclamer de cette identité et les inégalités qui sont produites à l’intérieur de ce processus.<br>This thesis focuses on the social roles of popular celebrations in rural French-speaking communities of North America between 1770 and 1870. It approaches the subject of festivals by looking more precisely at the festivity. The main objective is to highlight how the festivities, which we call popular celebrations, influence the functioning of North American francophone societies. What roles do popular celebrations play in the social life of the inhabitants of these societies? What impacts do they have on individual and collective identities? Do they retain the same characteristics from one society to another or do they adapt to different environments and contexts? How do they develop and evolve over time? What are the elements that influence their evolution? In order to answer these questions, the focus is on studying certain popular celebrations among four rural populations of French origin, namely the inhabitants of the St. Lawrence Valley, the Detroit region, the Illinois Country and Louisiana (more specifically, the inhabitants of Acadian origin). Based on published monographs, personal manuscripts, church correspondence, fictional literature and the work of folklorists, each of the five chapters represents a case study that shows how popular celebrations are influenced by the context in which people live and how festive sociability is involved in the construction of different social identities, such as those relating to race, gender and class. In the first chapter, a look at the weddings of Canadians and Louisianans of Acadian origin in the late 18th and mid-19th centuries reveals that food, drink, music and dance are very much in evidence, but above all that these festivities are the scene of many rites of passage for the new couple, and often more particularly for the wife, allowing the community to control the recognition and formalization of their social and sexual union. In the second and third chapters, the analysis of the guignolée, Epiphany and especially the carnival in Canada, Detroit and the villages of the Illinois Country shows that this festive period is influenced by the winter climate of the northern colonies and that it remains a key moment in the social life of the inhabitants. Among other things, it is synonymous in all three regions with meetings, dinners and balls during which residents determine who has the right to court with whom, that is, young people of the same social rank, and those who are an integral part of their community and those who are excluded from it, that is, poorer residents (St. Lawrence Valley) or Blacks and Indigenous people (Illinois Country). In the fourth chapter, the study of the evolution of the Sunday culture of Louisianans of Acadian origin highlights how, despite the success, over time, of the Catholic Church in its attempts to impose the sanctification of this day, house balls persist, being transferred to Saturdays, and contribute to the construction of this population’s racial identity. In the last chapter, an examination of the evolution of the May Day celebrations shows the effectiveness of reciprocal relationships in reinforcing and strengthening the social hierarchy in rural Canada, that is, between country people and a member of the local elite (seigneur or militia captain). This thesis enriches the existing historiography of festival in French America, which hardly addresses the subject of rural popular celebrations from the perspective of festive sociability. It shows that these celebrations are closely linked to the contextual aspects of each of the four regions studied, i.e. the demography, the presence of other ethnic groups, the climate, the geography, the gender relations, the economy, the political situation and the social hierarchy. Francophone inhabitants of rural areas adapt their popular celebrations to the particularities of their society, but those celebrations still preserve, sometimes until the 1870s, their regulatory functions of reproducing social, economic, gender and racial hierarchies. In other words, they are a tool that allows these Francophones not only to affirm their identity of French origin, but also to clearly identify the people who can or cannot claim this identity and the inequalities that are produced within this process.
