Abstract:

Creation of complex technical objects (CTO, such as science-intensive engineering objects, which are characterized by the number of elements and connections equal to 106 and more) – a process containing long subprocesses, complex objects, models, and based on available standards and information technology (IT). It is known from practice that CTO models are created with the help of information systems - components of CALS and PLM-solutions. This process have the following shortcomings: models at different stages of creation of CTO are not completely interconnected; CTO modeling takes place using different components of IT CALS and PLM-solutions, which creates constant difficulties in data conversion and leads to partial or complete loss of model data; there is no automated communication with other CTO models. A generalized model of complex technical objects is proposed, which based on using the theoretical-multiple approach allows to establish an information connection between the models of the process of creating complex technical objects. The information system of creation of the generalized model of difficult technical objects that allowed automating process of processing and construction of models is developed; to supplement the technology of parallel PLM design and components of information technologies CALS and PLM-solutions for the task of creating models of complex technical objects.

Abstract:

The ways of implementing the basic principles of «lean production» at certain stages of shipbuilding production and throughout the entire life cycle of shipbuilding products are considered. The article describes the main losses that occur at the production stage, as well as ways to improve shipbuilding production and directions for solving some problems of minimizing losses in relation to enterprises in the shipbuilding industry. The authors present an example of using CALS technologies in the process of production management, designing marine engineering facilities, communication between individual design organizations and the shipbuilding enterprise when creating complex projects; as well as ways to implement this task as the most promising in the world practice. The main purpose of using CALS in shipbuilding at all stages of the life cycle of a shipbuilding product is to create a unified information model, standardize the main methods for obtaining, storing and interpreting information, protect, certify and license the information used at all stages of the life cycle of shipbuilding products using computer-aided design systems. The article describes the main goals and directions of implementing CALS technologies as one of the stages of improving processes within the framework of the lean production concept. The ways of minimizing production losses in the development of planning and technological documentation and design and technological production preparation, production of working design documentation are considered. The purpose of creating a 3D ship model using volumetric scanning technology as a means of supporting the life cycle of marine equipment products at the stages of maintenance, repair and modernization is shown. The authors list the main ways to implement the assigned tasks at the shipbuilding enterprise, considering them from the point of view of implementing «lean production»; and the essential condition for its effective functioning is the joint use of CALS technologies at the enterprises of the shipbuilding industry, contractors and design organizations. The task of training and retraining specialists for the shipbuilding industry with appropriate professional competencies is outlined.

The tutorial discusses the design features of information systems (is) involved in the implementation of CALS technologies: MRP/MRPII/ERP systems, e-Commerce systems (B2B), supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), and decision support systems (OLAP). Abstract:

Abstract Standards verification in a CALS environment can be a complex and demanding process requiring not only a complete understanding of the standard but also the planned application and software implementation. An area of particular concern is the adequacy of vector or geometry based standards such as IGES to represent engineering and manufacturing applications. In such cases the visual similarity of geometry can be an inadequate test of the validity of a data exchange. Analytically oriented use of the geometry representation of some design and manufacturing applications may require very precise exchange of geometric entities. This paper will focus on testing strategies to provide comprehensive evaluations of vector based geometry standards such as IGES for engineering analysis, design and manufacturing use. The tests will show effective ways to measure whether vendor translators adequately capture key behavior needed in such applications. Results will be illustrated through tests at the Georgia Tech CALS Research Center which includes several different workstations and associated CAD software systems. CALS Class II test suites taken from representative aerospace applications are used to illustrate these concepts. The results show the importance of such testing in the verification of future CALS standards built around the PDES/STEP efforts. Finally the paper will outline the role and importance of an analytic testing facility in a comprehensive academic research program on information technology for engineering and how it influences current and future engineering education.

Abstract:

Abstract The DDG 51 Class of AEGIS guided missile destroyers is the Navy’s premier surface combatant. Named for famed World War II hero. Admiral Arleigh Burke, these ships represent state-of-the-art technology. This 504 foot, 8,300 ton destroyer has been designed with improved seakeeping and survivability characteristics and carries the sophisticated AEGIS Weapon System. Derived from the Greek word meaning “shield”, AEGIS ships are the “shield of the fleet”. The Navy has commissioned the first two ships of the class. They have performed beyond expectation in rigorous at-sea trials designed to fully test combat capability. The DDG 51 Class ships are replacing retiring fleet assets. In a decreasing Department of Defense (DoD) budget environment, however, acquisition costs must be reduced to continue to build capable warships. The Navy’s Destroyer Program Office is pursuing the implementation of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technology to reduce costs without reducing ship’s capability. Under Navy direction, the ship construction yards, Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding, are aggressively pursuing the transition to CAD-based design, construction, and life cycle support This effort also involves General Electric, the Combat System Engineering Agent. Building a three dimensional (3D) computer model of the ship prior to construction will facilitate the identification and resolution of interferences and interface problems that would otherwise go undetected until actual ship construction. This 3D database contains geometry and design data to support system design. Accurate construction drawings, fabrication sketches, and Numerical Control (NC) data can be extracted directly from the database to support construction at each shipyard. At completion of construction, a model representing the “as built” configuration will be provided as a lifetime support tool for each ship’s projected 40 year life. The transition to CAD-based design and construction has applied fundamental concepts of the DoD’s Computer Aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) initiative. In addition to creating a 3D database representing ship design, the shipyards have developed a neutral file translator to exchange this data between Computervision and Calma CAD systems in operation at Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding respectively. This object oriented transfer capability ensures data is shared rather than duplicated. The CALS concepts of concurrent engineering and computer aided engineering analysis are being applied to design an upgrade to the ship that features the addition of a helicopter hanger. The CAD models are used as an electronic baseline from which to assess proposed modifications. Optimizing the design before the first piece of steel is cut will reduce construction costs and improve the quality of the ship.

Abstract:

Abstract The problem of sharing data has many facets. The need to share data across multiple enterprises, different hardware platforms, different data storage paradigms and systems, and a variety of network architectures is growing. The emerging Standard for The Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP), being developed in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), addresses this need by providing information models, called application protocols, which clearly and unambiguously describe data. The validity of these information models is essential for success in sharing data in a highly automated engineering environment. This paper describes the Data Probe: a tool for examining, editing, and managing EXPRESS-based data. The Data Probe tool supports the validation of STEP application protocols. The paper includes a description of the software architecture, the initial implementation, and plans for future enhancements. The software is designed as independent components which can be incorporated into other STEP-related systems or software requiring general purpose editing tools for structured information. The initial version of the Data Probe tool is based on two implementation mechanisms defined within STEP: the conceptual modeling language EXPRESS and the STEP exchange file format. Future work will focus on integrating a database system into the software. The software architecture and the use of object-oriented techniques enables code reusability and system extensibility and has been instrumental for a phased implementation. The software is under development at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and is in the public-domain. The software supports the Validation Testing System, part of the Application Protocol Development Environment, at the CALS-sponsored National PDES Testbed. (PDES, Product Data Exchange using STEP, is the U.S. effort in support of the international standard.)
