Abstract:
Investor-state arbitration is different from commercial arbitration between two private entities in that the involvement of a state or a state entity may entail considerations connected to sovereignty. States as sovereigns have certain rights and prerogatives stemming from the right to self-determination and their responsibility to safeguard public interests. On the other hand, states are also bound by the obligations they have freely decided to enter into. This chapter provides an overview of some important issues and problems in the calculation of compensation and damages in investor-state arbitration. It starts with the legal rules applicable and then addresses some important issues which must be identified in practice, such as causation and the valuation date. Thereafter, it discusses the circumstances which might limit the amount of compensation or damages before concluding with some remarks about the appropriate valuation method.

Abstract:
Acalculia is an acquired disorder of number and/or calculation skills following cerebral damage (Henschen, 1919) which affects about 20% of patients with left hemisphere injury. The inability to use numbers can be very incapacitating as it interferes with several everyday activities such as shopping and using bank accounts and telephones (Butterworth, 1999; Dehaene, 1997). After introducing the main cognitive and anatomical features of the normal number system, this chapter will discuss the main historical and contemporary achievements in the neuropsychology of number cognition. These achievements concern: understanding that the number system is fractionated in distinct subcomponents; characterizing the relation between number and other cognitive skills; defining the role of the brain regions that cause number and calculation disorders or that allow maintenance of residual number skills; and identifying tools for the assessment and the possible rehabilitation of acalculia.

Abstract:
This section of this volume deals with the study of numerical impairment occurring either after brain damage (i.e., acquired acalculia) or during development without any known brain damage (i.e., dyscalculia). The chapters in this section will report the research aiming at characterizing those difficulties. The study of atypical number processing and calculation in acalculia has contributed importantly to the understanding of how our brain is structured to process number and to calculate. The study of dyscalculia has shed light on the numerical bases for arithmetic learning. This research has also helped us in determining how other cognitive functions such as working memory, visuospatial processing, or phonological awareness have an impact on numerical cognition. These relations between different cognitive domains could partly explain the co-morbidities that are often observed in developmental disorders. Finally, this section also reviews the few attempts that have been made to enhance those numerical capacities.
