Wang, Lilian. Amorphous/Indistinct Calcifications (Group). Edited by Christoph I. Lee, Constance D. Lehman, and Lawrence W. Bassett. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190270261.003.0039.

Abstract:
Amorphous calcifications are calcifications that are sufficiently small and/or hazy that a more specific morphological classification cannot be made. Historically, such calcifications were referred to as “indistinct” calcifications. The likelihood of malignancy and the management of amorphous calcifications largely depend on their distribution. This chapter, appearing in the section on calcifications, reviews the key imaging and clinical features, imaging protocols and pitfalls, differential diagnosis with radiology–pathology correlation, and management recommendations for amorphous/indistinct calcifications in a group. Topics discussed include spot magnification views for characterization, role of distribution in BI-RADS assessment, and pathological entities, including fibrocystic change, milk of calcium, atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

Abstract:
Pleomorphic calcifications are categorized among calcifications with suspicious morphology: amorphous, coarse heterogeneous, fine linear or fine-linear branching, and fine pleomorphic calcifications. Unlike amorphous calcifications, pleomorphic calcifications are more conspicuous, with discernible shapes that appear predominantly irregular, and are variable in size and configuration. A segmental distribution, seen as a triangular shape with its apex centered at the nipple, is especially suspicious for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or multifocal breast cancer, as its pattern of calcium deposition suggests involvement of a duct system within the breast. This chapter, appearing in the section on calcifications, reviews the key clinical and imaging features, imaging protocols, differential diagnoses, and management recommendations for pleomorphic calcifications. Topics discussed include characteristic morphology and distribution of pleomorphic calcifications, BI-RADS assessments, core needle biopsy, and radiological–pathological correlation.

Abstract:
The 2021 EUROCALL conference engaged just under 250 speakers from 40 different countries. Cnam Paris and Sorbonne Université joined forces to host and organise the event despite the challenging context due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally programmed to be held on site in the heart of Paris, France, the EUROCALL organising team and executive committee agreed to opt for a blended and then for a fully online conference. The theme of the 2021 EUROCALL conference was “CALL & Professionalisation”. This volume, a selection of 54 short papers by some of the EUROCALL 2021 presenters, offers a combination of research studies as well as practical examples fairly representative of the theme of the conference.

Abstract:
The epilogue restates the central themes of the book and the objectives of this particular comparative feminist theological project. Dominant systems of privilege are invested in upholding boundaries, whether based on gender, race, or religious identity. Experience is authoritative. Embodiment matters. Ritual is a manifestation and site of change. Communities must reclaim agency and embrace the challenge of responsiveness. Denial is a form of invisibilization and injustice. Conscientization is essential. The prophetic example and transformative taqwa call us to do more than imitate. Interreligious spaces and engagements are opportunities that enrich both in their similarities and distinctions. It also reiterates the provocative and transformative nature of the Word of God in the world.

Abstract:
Craniofacial pain, excluding the headache disorders, comprises a heterogeneous group of conditions. Some fall within the sphere of the neurologist, but many call for other specialist skills in diagnosis and management. The site of pain is not always a good guide to either the nature of the pain or the tissue of origin. Patients with craniofacial pain are frequently referred to the neurologist on an assumption that the pain is neuralgic, and for this reason neurologists need to be aware of the many potential causes and be prepared to collaborate closely with other specialists, including the ear, nose, and throat surgeon, ophthalmologist, dental surgeon, oral medicine physician, and psychiatrist. An accurate and detailed history is essential, because in many patients with facial pain, there will be no abnormal physical signs and the diagnosis rests entirely on the history.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 presents the restaurant as a valuable site for mapping patterns of transnational, global and cultural exchange. London’s diners were exposed to a variety of new, often hybrid, culinary cultures, which call into question simplistic binaries between Britain and the world beyond. The presence in London’s restaurants of French menus, Indian dishes, Italian cooks, Swiss proprietors, German waiters, and Chinese and American diners illustrates the complexity of the relationship between populations and places. London’s ‘gastro-cosmopolitanism’, my shorthand for this multilayered culture, reveals not merely the extent to which Britain’s imperial metropolis was exposed to transnational forces, but that these influences were genuinely global and not confined to Britain’s formal empire. More generally, the chapter suggests the value of appreciating the materially grounded, rather than merely discursive, aspects of cosmopolitanism in Britain in this period.

Abstract:
In addition to summarizing key concerns in Theravāda Buddhist Economics by scholars such as E. F. Schumacher and the Thai monk Payutto, this essay explores how descriptions of the West, Western development, and the “science” of economics serves in that literature to construct Occidentalist versions of Southeast Asian traditionalism and religious orthodoxy. It then introduces the previously unstudied work of Shérab Tendar, a prominent Tibetan Buddhist scholar in the contemporary People’s Republic of China who has written prodigiously on what he considers to be a scripturally based Mahāyāna and Tantric Buddhist Economics. Comparing these three influential iterations of Buddhist Economics, this essay argues that this movement has less to do with economics proper than with what I call trans-Buddhist “scales of value”: site-specific desires and measures of sought after outcomes that here privilege the economy and economic behavior as a technique for individual, social, and environmental well-being and emancipation.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the song “Rock Island Lime”, which was performed by Robert Kelly Pace, a twenty-one-year-old convict, along with a group of inmates at Cummins Camp One, a unit of the Arkansas penal system. Their performance involved a closely patterned call-and-response, their voices dispersed in three- and sometimes four-part harmony. Between the choruses one of them imitated a train whistle. “Rock Island Line” began its journey in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the repair shops of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. Based on a traditional form and arising within a commercial setting, the song soon moved beyond this work site making new stops, shifting its contents, and streamlining its load. It migrated from a gospel quartet that the Arkansas prisoners performed to a rhythmic fable that Huddie Ledbetter created as he traveled with John Lomax as chauffeur, auto mechanic, and musical demonstrator. Eventually the song reached an incalculable number of players, singers, and listeners via skiffle, rock and roll, country, pop, and the folksong revival.

Abstract:
The extraordinary breadth and depth of Leibniz’s intellectual vision commands ever increasing attention. As more texts gradually emerge from seemingly bottomless archives, new facets of his contribution to an astonishing variety of fields come to light. This volume provides a uniquely comprehensive, systematic, and up-to-date appraisal of Leibniz’s thought thematically organized around its diverse but interrelated aspects. Discussion of his philosophical system naturally takes place of pride. A cluster of original essays revisit his logic, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of nature, moral and political philosophy, and philosophy of religion. The scope of the volume, however, goes beyond that of a philosophical collection to embrace all the main features of Leibniz’s thought and activity. Contributions are offered on Leibniz as a mathematician (including not only his calculus but also determinant theory, symmetric functions, the dyadic, the analysis situs, probability and statistics); on Leibniz as a scientist (physics and also optics, cosmology, geology, physiology, medicine, and chemistry); on his technical innovations (the calculating machine and the technology of mining, as well as other discoveries); on his work as an ‘intelligencer’ and cultural networker, as jurist, historian, editor of sources and librarian; on his views on Europe’s political future, religious toleration, and ecclesiastical reunification; on his proposals for political, administrative, economic, and social reform. In so doing, the volume serves as a unique cross-disciplinary point of contact for the many domains to which Leibniz contributed. By assembling leading specialists on all these topics, it offers the most rounded picture of Leibniz’s endeavors currently available.

Abstract:
Abstract Beginning with the French eighteenth century and concluding in the present, this book explores complex interrelations between ritual and mockery, which is not infrequently the unofficial face of claims to rationality. The book is particularly concerned with how the mocking and parodying of ritual often associated with modern rationalism may itself become ritualized, and other ways in which supposedly sham ritual may survive its “outing.” Just as the very concept of ritual is seen by anthropologists and others as intimately related to modernity (at once the site of its invention and the reflection of an antiritualism associated with secular societies), so this book traces the evolution of what the authors call mock ritual, in various forms, throughout the modern era, relying on literary, historical, and anthropological texts as well as encyclopedias, newspapers, and films. It places famous eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors in dialogue with contemporary popular culture, from Diderot, Sterne, and Flaubert to the TV shows Survivor and Judge Judy, and from Voltaire to the Charlie Hebdo tragedy of 2015. The authors’ use of literary texts in addressing anthropological questions has precedents in the work of Georges Bataille, among others, who viewed literature as “the principal heir” and a continuation of “the game of religions.” Ritualistic and mock ritualistic aspects of comedy and ridicule are considered along with those, notably, of sexuality, medicine, art, education, and justice. In addition to a chapter on dueling, the book contains a postscript that considers various aspects of these subjects in the contemporary world.

Abstract:
Fusing the craft of writing and the philosophy and practice of yoga, The Yogic Writer charts a path to the heart of your creativity through the practice of yogic breathing, somatic exercises and meditations. With the tyranny of outcomes and product paralysing writers in this modern world, Jennifer Sinor summons her 30 years or experience teaching creative writing and yoga to guide your focus back to process, to discover your inner landscape and how writing, when undertaken with intention, transforms our creative potential. A call to sit within the mess and to not have all the answers, this book directs you to seek inspiration from within the body, to recognise it as a vessel, vehicle and teacher that generates knowledge and ideas separate from the cognitive brain. Connecting craft with the body throughout, it maps notions of writing - creating space for ideas and intentions, drafting, revision and sitting in sites of possibility and potential – onto the four stages of breath. Less curriculum and more contemplation through insights offered in brief essays, Sinor meets writers at the point of need, offering practical craft advice whilst meditating on deeper subjects being pursued: how to look, who is really writing, and how to listen to our bodies. With ideas owed to ancient wisdoms, knowledge informing creative writing pedagogy and composition, and Sinor’s own experience, The Yogic Writer offers a unique, alternative approach to finding creativity that forsakes external validation for internal knowledge and experimentation. Inspirational, affirmational and personal, this book is for anyone seeking permission to embody the life of a writer that they already know, deep down, to be theirs.
