Abstract:
Inositol is essential in eukaryotes, and must be imported or synthesized. Inositol biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is controlled by three non-essential genes that make up the inositol regulon: ScINO2 and ScINO4, which together encode a heterodimeric transcriptional activator, and ScOPI1, which encodes a transcriptional repressor. ScOpi1p inhibits the ScIno2-ScIno4p activator in response to extracellular inositol levels. An important gene controlled by the inositol regulon is ScINO1, which encodes inositol-3-phosphate synthase, a key enzyme in inositol biosynthesis. In the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans, homologues of the S. cerevisiae inositol regulon genes are ‘transcriptionally rewired’. Instead of regulating the CaINO1 gene, CaINO2 and CaINO4 regulate ribosomal genes. Another Candida species that is a prevalent cause of infections is Candida glabrata; however, C. glabrata is phylogenetically more closely related to S. cerevisiae than C. albicans. Experiments were designed to determine if C. glabrata homologues of the inositol regulon genes function similarly to S. cerevisiae or are transcriptionally rewired. CgINO2, CgINO4 and CgOPI1 regulate CgINO1 in a manner similar to that observed in S. cerevisiae. However, unlike in S. cerevisiae, CgOPI1 is essential. Genetic data indicate that CgOPI1 is a repressor that affects viability by regulating activation of a target of the inositol regulon.

Abstract:
Background A randomized, double-blinded trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the S-Caine Patch (ZARS, Inc., Salt Lake City, UT), a eutectic mixture of lidocaine and tetracaine, for pain relief during venipuncture in children. Methods With institutional review board approval, parental consent, and patient assent, 64 children who were scheduled for medically indicated vascular access at two centers were randomly assigned (2:1) to receive either an S-Caine Patch or a placebo patch for 20 min before venipuncture procedures. The primary outcome measure was the child's rating of pain during venipuncture using the Oucher pain scale. Additional measures of efficacy included the blinded investigator's and an independent observer's four-point categorical scores. Variables were compared between treatments using Mantel-Haenszel summary chi-square tests or Pearson chi-square tests. Results The S-Caine Patch produced significantly greater pain relief compared with placebo (median Oucher scores of 0 vs. 60; P < 0.001). Fifty-nine percent of the children in the S-Caine Patch group reported no pain compared with 20% of the children in the placebo patch group. The investigator estimated that 76% of the children in the S-Caine Patch group experienced no pain during venipuncture versus 20% in the placebo patch group (P = 0.001). Independent observer ratings also favored the S-Caine Patchtrade mark (P < 0.001). Mild skin erythema (< 38%) and edema (< 2%) occurred with similar frequencies between the groups. Conclusion This study demonstrated that a 20-min application of the S-Caine Patch is effective in lessening pain associated with venipuncture procedures. Adverse events after S-Caine Patch application were mild and transient.

Abstract:
Aim. To assess the tolerance of citrate accumulation due to plasma exchange (PE) among patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Methods. A prospective, observational study was conducted among patients with ACLF who received heparin anticoagulation during PE-centered therapy without filtration and dialysis. Citrate accumulation was defined as the value of total calcium (Catot) to ionized calcium (Caion) ratio (Catot/Caion) greater than or equal to 2.5 (Catot/Caion≥2.5). Results. Fifty-four patients were enrolled. The mean age and MELD score were 50.0 ± 11.3 years old and 25 ± 7, respectively. Thirty-three patients had liver cirrhosis. The total 3-month survival rate was 57.4% (31/54). The mean Catot/Caion at the time before PE was 2.05 ± 0.14. Catot/Caion≥2.5 occurred in 100.0% (54/54) and 29.6% (16/54) of patients with mean Catot/Caion of 4.34 ± 1.52 and 2.36 ± 0.32 immediately after PE and 1 hour after PE, respectively, and these levels were much higher than those before PE (p<0.01). However, all values returned to lower than 2.5 by the next morning with no difference from those before PE (2.10 ± 0.14 versus 2.05 ± 0.14, p>0.05). Hypocalcemia (ionized calcium) and mild alkalosis were the main metabolic alterations. No symptoms associated with hypocalcemia occurred. Conclusions. Citrate accumulation is well tolerated by patients with ACLF who receive PE-centered therapy without filtration and dialysis. This study is regeristed with ChiCTR-OOC-17013618.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the interactions between mass rapid transit and the urban structure of an agglomeration. The new regional line beeing in service recently, this research studies the effects of the first section on the south periphery development in cairo. Starting by analysing some foreign experiences the metro appeared as an accelerator element of urbanization, a pole catalysor, a mutation element, and a tool to realize it as well. Thus the study of the different phenomenas in the southern sector in cairo has emphazised the role that might play this line in its structure and development, in oder to attenuate the trends of centrality and establish a spatial and urban equilibrium assuring the organization of the three elements system : metro, centre and periphery

Abstract:

Thesis, Tours, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008TOUR4050/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Most investigations of the neural mechanisms of fear in vertebrates have involved mammals, but knowledge in other classes of vertebrates is important for a better understanding of the phylogenic continuity ofthis emotion. The aim of the present study was to identify brain areas potentially involved in the control ofbehavioural fear responses in birds, using two lines of quail divergently selected for contrasting fear behaviour. A first investigation using lesions was realised to study the roles of two subdivisions of the arcopallium/ posterior pallial amygdala (PoA) complex, an avian brain region known for its involvement in fear behaviour. The results suggest that the rostral and caudal parts of this brain region play distinct roles in the control of fearbehaviour. In order to identify other avian brain areas potentially involved in the control of fear behaviour, neuralactivation induced by a fear-inducing situation was assessed in the two lines of quail with contrasting fearbehaviour, was then investigated. The expression of Fos protein, a marker of cellular activation, increased inresponse to the fear-inducing situation in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN) in quail displaying exaggerated fear behaviour, suggesting an involvement of the PVN in the control of fear responses in birds. Moreover, this study revealed differences in neural activation between the two lines of quail in basal conditions in the lateral part of the bed nucleus of the stria termanalis (BSTL), the anterior arcopallium and the caudal part of the nucleus taeniae of the amygdala

Connor, A. "The spiritual brotherhood of mankind : religion in the novels of Hall Caine." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3009465/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine was a best-selling novelist active between 1885 and 1923. His novels were noted for their melodramatic plots, often involving love triangles, with affairs, adultery, extra-marital sex and infanticide. Several of his books sold more than a million copies, and most were adapted for the stage and screen, often by Caine himself, who was also a prolific dramatist. In addition, Caine worked as a journalist and enjoyed a brief political career. Despite his massive commercial success the novels are little read nowadays. Contemporary literary critics dismissed his plots as overly sensational and formulaic and there has been little subsequent in-depth commentary on his novels. However, Caine should not be disregarded as a purely commercial writer of limited ability. He was a deeply religious man with extensive scriptural knowledge, who frequently drew inspiration for his novels from the Bible and viewed fiction as a vehicle for moral and religious instruction. He also used the novels to express his personal beliefs and to engage in specific religious debates. Caine had family connections to the Isle of Man where he eventually settled permanently, and a highly significant archive of largely unexplored material is held at the Manx Museum. Investigation of this resource has enabled a detailed critical appraisal of Caine’s approach to religion in his novels. Each chapter of this thesis considers Caine’s relationship to either a Christian denomination or major religion. The first chapter examines Nonconformity as a powerful formative influence on Caine’s religiosity and on his view of fiction. In the second and third chapters, which deal with the Anglican Church and Roman Catholicism respectively, Caine confronts several religious issues of great interest to his contemporaries and with some relevance again in the twenty-first century. The final two chapters consider Caine’s belief in the fundamental unity of all religions by examining his relationship with the Jewish and Islamic faiths. Taken as a whole, this thesis reclaims Caine for a new readership and reminds us of the powerful role popular novels and drama once had in religious debate, and arguably still have. Caine is not always a likeable figure, certainly not a straightforward one, but he is a striking character and, as such, deserves the consideration offered throughout this work.

Castello, Héctor, Carlo Ferraro, Josefina Paz, Sofía Rojo, and Marcelo Yangosián. Inter-American Development Bank, November 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003939.

Abstract:

Brophy, Kenny, and Alison Sheridan, eds. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.
