Abstract:
In engineering, the offer of CAD/CAE platforms is constantly in evolution and growth. With the objective to optimize the choice of which platform to use, the main goal of this work is to analyze the behaviour of numeric simulation on CAD/CAE platforms. The need to check the precision of finite elements with independent tests, in order to compare the results, became more necessary and acknowledge. This way, who works in finite element analyses, will have more assurance with the results obtained. To do that, it will be used benchmark problems with expected results to serve as reference to the analysis pretended. Knowing that each CAD and CAE software has his limitations it happens that, for some problems, there will be restrictions about the simulation. Within the comparative study it will be also done a convergence study to understand which is the mesh refinement necessary to obtain a acceptable value, between the expectable. This study will have as base the reference values expected to some type of problem. Finally, as it was expected, the platforms dedicated to numeric calculation (CAE), unlike the modules dedicated to finite element analysis implemented in the CAD platforms, provides better results, because they have in its database a greater number of elements for a larger type of problems. In this way, they are more enable to realize and to have better results for a wider range of problems with various restrictions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The diploma thesis is focused on the study of interactions between hyaluronan of various molecular weights with CAE surfactant. This surfactant does not have the exact composition and there is not known their molecular weight. One of the main parameters needed to describe the interactions between surfactant and hyaluronan, there is the determination of critical micellar concentration. The value of critical micellar concentration of CAE is not known yet. All measurements were made for solutions in aqueous solution and 0.15 M NaCl. The determination of the molecular weight of this surfactant was performed by the technique SEC-MALS-dRI. High resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy was chosen to determine the critical micellar concentration and tensiometry was chosen as a complementary method. The interactions of CAE surfactant with polysaccharide of hyaluronan were showed by high resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy and densitometry. Compressibility was calculated from ultrasonic velocity and density.

Abstract:
Deformation of materials due to heat exposure can be a challenge in vehicle design. Sun exposure and heat build up in the vehicle cabin contribute to accelerated aging of the materials used. To understand how this process affects the durability, numerical simulation is an important tool. This thesis work investigates whether it is possible to, with weather data and knowledge of how a car is used, simulate the deformation process of the trim parts due to heat exposure from the sun. To answer this question, two simulation methods have been compared: The first method is to only look at the aging of the material over time. This method is used today at Volvo Cars, but has been found to be insufficient from a number of aspects. The second method includes the effects of the reversible deformations. This method has not previously been tested in a similar context but was considered interesting as it models more true to life. In addition, the effects of modeling the car according to a virtual customer behavior, rather than stationary, were investigated. The main simulation tools used are TAITherm and Abaqus. The results show that modeling the vehicle with an imagined user routine yields a lower mean temperature as the car is cooled down when driven. The result of the comparison between the two methods shows that inclusion of the effects of the reversible deformations contribute to a better model of the aging of the trim parts due to heat exposure from the sun.

Abstract:
To keep up with technological as well as logistical challenges of the modern automobile market, major car manufacturing firms have resorted to virtual simulation tools. This enables the development as well as validation of vehicular models much before resources are invested into a new physical prototype. This project focuses on the development of a tool that would help in optimising the handling parameters of a vehicle. This is achieved by creating an optimization routine for tuning the various parameters of the Electronic Power Steering (EPAS). This process is usually done manually, by on-track testing, due to the difficulties in correlating Subjective Assessments (SA) with Objective Metrics (OM). Automating this process would help to reduce the overall research and development time, by providing a baseline tune for the EPAS parameters which could then be finely tweaked by manual track testing. The tool is built by interfacing various software in a multi-objective optimisation environment known as ModeFrontier. The modelling and simulations are performed in IPG CarMaker, with the post processing of the results taken care of by Sympathy for Data. Multiple optimization algorithms were tested to achieve the best optimisation routine. The EPAS parameters, namely the Basic Steering Torque, Active Return and Active Damping, act as the input to the optimization routine. The outputs of the model are the Objective Metrics, which provide a clear indication of the dynamic performance of a component. These metrics are optimized to _t the Steering DNA structure, which uniquely describes the attributes of a vehicle. The final optimised vehicle is manually tested at the track, to determine the real driving feel.

Abstract: This work has as objective to show a software that have the goal to automate the main stages of a steel structural design, using AutoLISP and Delphi5 languages. The steel structural designs in case are the roofs formed by plane trusses made by hollow sections frames. These hollow steel sections, which are not highly used in plane structures in Brazil, are being disseminated by the use of softwares that help civil engineers to use them correctly in their designs, in view of that they result in less weighted and easy manufactured structures. So, there is the necessity to develop a CAD/CAE system, that will automate the generation of the geometries from plane structures and the graphical designs from the three-dimentional general system - CAD; also, we have the necessity to export the data to an integrated computer program that executes an optimized process from the entire structural analysis and design - CAE; and, finaly, to return the proceeded data back to CAD environment, to draw the automatic details from the connections of the analyzed structure. All the procedures and methods used to automate the design follows the specifications of Brazilian Design Codes, mainly the NBR-8800/1986

Abstract:
The main content in the research is developing an open platform of parameterized shape optimization based-on CAD/CAE integration technique. Through integration, structural analysis and design optimization are seamless combined with parametric geometry modeling and embed into the CAD system. POSHAPE can provide parameterized shape optimization method for 3D solid structure, spatial shell structure and cell structure of composite material. To realize such a general method, integration is the most essential part. In this platform, integration is realized includes: 1) Integrating structure analysis tool of different disciplinary with structure shape optimization. Structure response from different disciplinary will be studied according structure shape. 2) Integrating finite element modeling with parametric geometry modeling through Boundary Representative Tree (simplified as: B-Rep) used in solid modeling. Finite element model is parameterized to be dynamic regenerated during optimization design steps. 3) Parametric solid modeling is extended to realize parameterized surface modeling under integration between surface model definition and solid model. Parameterized finite element modeling of shell structure is also achieved which is similar to that of solid structure

Abstract:
This work presents a methodology for the design and fabrication of ceramic powder isostatic pressing moulds using CAD and CAE tools and Rapid Prototyping. The isostatic pressing process was simulated using the finite element method. The compaction behavior of ceramic powder is described by the Drucker-Prager/cap constitutive model and the behavior of elastomeric material is described by the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive model within the commercial finite element software ABAQUS®. These simulations are required to adjust the mould design in order to suit the geometry of the compact and green machining allowance. For this study, it is used a case study consisting of pressing a ceramic sphere for hip implant stem. A virtual prototype was designed from the geometry obtained from the simulations and reproduced in Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) polymer, using the Rapid Prototyping technology - Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). Silicone moulds were obtained from the polymer prototype and used to aid in the making of the elastomeric bag and mould support cage. The methodology used in this investigation was validate considering that the simulations yield to a good agreement with measured manufactured components.

The present research presents the problem related to the aging population of the world and the necessary improvement on product development to better serve these users considering their limitations that come with the aging process; one of the possible improvements is the inclusion of these user on usability testing. This inclusion can be made with low cost and without exposing the user through virtual testing, which is where the problem of this research focuses, if is possible to to perform these usability tests entirely in SolidWorks® platform. The objective of this research is to develop a procedure for virtual usability testing in SolidWorks® software, with focus on elderly users. To achive the corroboration of the hypothesis (is possible to do virtual usability testing through the software plataform), was reproduced the traditional usability test of a remote control conducted with elder users in a virtual usability test on the SolidWorks® plataform, the modeled user presented limitations based on the users participants of the traditional testing, enabling the comparison of the found results of the tests. On the usability tests were evaluated the performance metrics of task success and number of positioning of the remote control were necessary to complete the task. By the test results we were able to realize that the variable of number of positions necessary to complete the task is more appropriate to evaluate the similarity between the results of real and virtual tests. The result of the statistic test for this metric indicated that there are significant differences between the results of the traditional test and the results of the virtual test, but when evaluated only the results of females elders the results showed no significant differences. It was concluded that further research is necessary to achieve corroboration of the hypothesis, considering that the results indicated significant differences between the results. The fact that the group of female older users have shown similar results, indicating that with improvements in usability testing procedure in SolidWorks® platform can achieve similar results for older users of both genders.

Abstract:
In the automobile industry, there is a big push for the automotive car manufacturers to base engineering decisions on the results of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) solutions, and to transform the prototyping and testing, from a costly iterative process to a final verification and validation step. The variability in components material properties and environmental conditions together with the lack of knowledge about the underlying physics of complex systems often make it impractical to make reliable predictions based on only deterministic CAE models. One such area is the CAE modelling of cast aluminium components. These cast aluminium components have gained a huge relevance in the automobile industries due to their commendable mechanical properties. The advantage of the cast aluminium alloys are being a well-established alloy system in manufacturing processes, their functional integrity and relatively low weight. However, the presence of pores and micro-voids obtained during the manufacturing process constitutes a specific material behaviour and establishes a challenge in modelling of the cast materials. Furthermore, the low ductility of the materialdemands for the advanced numerical model to predict the failure. The main focus of this master thesis work is to investigate modelling technique of a cast aluminium alloy component, a spring tower, for a drop tower test and validate the predicted behaviour with the physical test results. Volvo Car Corporation currently uses a material model provided by MATFEM for cast aluminium parts which are explored in this thesis work, to validate the material model for component level testing. The methodology used to achieve this objective was to develop a boundary condition to perform component level tests in the drop tower and to correlate these with the obtained results found by using various modelling techniques in the explicit solver LS-DYNA. Therefore, precise and realistic modelling of the drop tower is crucial because the simulation results can be influenced by major design changes. A detailed finite element model for the spring tower has been developed from the observations made during the physical testing. The refined model showed good agreement with the existing model for the spring tower and observations from physical tests.

Abstract:

Medium and Large Companies must compete every day in a global context. To achieve greater efficiency in their products/processes they are forced to globalize by opening multiple locations in geographically distant places. In this context, people from the same team or different teams must work together regardless of the time zone and where they are located. Therefore, a "virtual" team consists of groups of geographically distant people who can coordinate with the help of new technologies. The tools and methodologies supporting "Computer Supported Cooperative Work" (CSCW) can facilitate collaboration by reducing distance and time related issues. The main goals CSCW aims to achieve within a complex organization are listed below: • Schedule, track, and chart the steps in a project as it is being completed (Project Management) • Share, review, approve or reject project proposals from other workgroup members (Authoring Systems) • Collaborative management of tasks and documents within a knowledge-based business process (Workflow Management) • Collect, organize, manage, and share various forms of information (Knowledge Management) • Collaborative bookmarking engine to tag, organize, share, and search enterprise data (Enterprise Bookmarking) • Collect, organize, manage and share information associated with the delivery of a project (Extranet Systems) • Quickly share company information to members within a company via Internet (Intranet Systems) • Organize social relations of groups (Social Network) • Collaborate and share structured data and information (Online SpreadSheet) This work is based on the main objectives outlined through a specific research experience that verifies compliance and ensures its applicability. The real context consists of virtual team of engineers and the way they cooperate within the automotive industry. The research “iter” can be summarized as follows: (1) the main collaborative and engineering requirements have been identified by referring to a real use case within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles; (2) each requirement has been met by implementing an integrated, modular and extensible architecture; (3) Floasys platform for collecting, centralizing and sharing simulations has been designed, implemented and tested; (4) a tool called ExploraTool has been designed to visually explore a simulation repository within Floasys; (5) the possible extension of the platform has been identified in terms of multidisciplinarity and multisectorality; (6) downstream of the whole process, all the requirements a CSCW intended to meet were verified. The initial phase of the work has focused on collecting collaborative requirements and related needs that emerge when different virtual teams find themselves collaborating to pursue a common result. The collaborative requirements identified to support collaboration between geographically remote teams are: centralizing simulation data, providing annotation and adding metadata to files, providing a search engine for simulations completed by other analysts, providing data versioning and support their sharing. In line with the requirements identified, a collaborative platform prototype (CSCW) called Floasys was developed. Floasys customers are all industries using CAE simulations to design their products, so the automotive, aeronautical and naval industries, etc. Floasys collects simulation data, stores them in open XML format and centralizes them into a shared repository; It also provides additional services on collected data stored in open format, such as the ability to annotate files or search within the repository regardless of the simulator with which they were generated. It is extremely useful to be able to retrieve simulations from other members of the same team or different teams in order to compare the performance of a current project. In order to provide these services, various aspects must be considered: surely the services listed above must be immersed in an existing business environment with existing practices, workflows and software systems. To bring a concrete example, the only centralization of simulation data involves communication with existing simulation software by mitigating the problem of Vendor Lock-In, which is the strong dependence on the simulators themselves. From an architectural point of view, Floasys meets the non-functional extensibility and modularity requirements. This way the system can be tailored to the needs of customers, open to meet future needs and be used in other departments. The modular and extensible Floasys architecture was obtained based on the concept of plug-in. Although the research activity directly concerns the automotive industry, the requirements and the difficulties described are common to other sectors as described in the literature. So many of the considerations made in this work and the solutions adopted can be reused for other types of simulation as well as for data obtained from experiments. Finally, within Floasys, an interactive tool called "ExploraTool" was integrated for viewing, exploring, and querying simulation repositories. Although the idea of this tool was born in the context of simulation repository navigation, it is generic and can be used with any dataset. The tool is based on Eulero-Venn diagrams. The universe is the set of all simulations stored in one or more repositories. Simulation groups are represented by grafted ellipses. Using this tool, analysts can explore the repository through drill-down and roll-up operations to get more or less detail. Going down in the hierarchy, the user filters the items within the dataset and performs a graphical query. In this way, the user explores the repository by finally obtaining two or more simulations to be compared. After the design, implementation and implementation phase, the tool was tested with real users to gain data on its usability. [edited by author]

Abstract:
The vehicle brands of today need to develop high quality products in a short period of time to satisfy the consumer needs and to stand out in the competition. To be able to do this simulation tools have been used more and more in the development process. This would enable quick evaluation of different concepts and setups without the need of building physical prototypes (though physical prototypes are still common to validate development in different stages). The goal of this thesis is to contribute to this trend by developing and evaluating a process of optimizing the control parameters of an EPAS (electronic power assist steering) system by solely using computer aided engineering (CAE) tools. This tuning is done to improve the steering feel for the driver. The process could then be used to improve the initial tuning of such a system or in a later stage completely parameterize it. In this project, a complete process from setting up the simulation environment to developing the optimization process of the parameters was developed. A vehicle model was simulated using the real time simulation software IPG CarMaker, parameterized by multi-body simulation results and tyre measurements. The steering system itself was modelled by the supplier in Simulink so that the entire vehicle could be co-simulated using both CarMaker and Simulink. To evaluate the performance of the steering system objective metrics were used, each of which had a target range. The optimization process itself utilizes the optimization tool Tomlab, which is a powerful Matlab toolbox. Tomlab uses a complex strategy of evaluating the response of a system when the relationship between the inputs (in this case the EPAS control parameters) and the outputs (in this case the objective metrics) is unknown. A cost function using the difference between the target metric value and the actual metric value was set up and the weighing factors for each of the tested metrics were determined by their sensitivity to the optimized parameter. The developed process was tested on three specific metrics for two specific parameters of the controller. These metrics were the friction feel, the torque build-up and the torque deadband, all three of which relates to the torque feedback of the steering wheel. All three metric values had room for improvement but after going through the developed process they could be adapted to be closer to the optimal target. These results need to be validated, but as a proof of concept the work described in this thesis shows that it is possible to parameterize a vehicle subsystem by only using CAE tools.

Abstract:
Due to the constraint of high costs and limitations of load conditions, experimental testing is not appropriate for the static study of shelter structures. Comparatively, an effective computational modeling and numerical solution demonstrates significant advantages for understanding the response of steel shelter structures. This study gives an insight into the structural integrity of the prototype shelter structure which is examined using computer simulation of the shelter structure on Abaqus/CAE 2019. The results of the computer modelling demonstrate the response of shelter structure under ten different loading conditions as per ISO 1496:2013 (E). The loading conditions are applied to various components of the shelter structure and corresponding deflection are observed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Chinese economy has increased quickly and continuously in recent years. Manufacturing is an important part of Chinese industry. The enhancement of modem manufacturing technology is becoming an important issue. The aim of the present thesis is to develop nonstandard (over-stiff) tools5 CAD/CAE/CAPP/CAM integrated system. This will involve integrating modern information technology, manufacturing technology and management technology. The thesis objective is to propose a totally new and integrated design, analysis and manufacturing system. This would provide to manufacturers a capability to carry out the incorporation of CAD/CAE/CAM systems. Many enterprises and universities have developed standard CAD system tools5 in recent years in China. But in regard to nonstandard complex CAD/CAM tools5, there is still much to be done. After more than one year investigation and research, a great quantity of information and data has been assembled, thus setting a solid foundation for completing this project successfully. This thesis considers in detail the problem associated with non-standard over stiff end milling cutters to illustrate the design approach used and its implementation. It uses a feature based model constructing technology and applies the CAD and finite element analysis together with relevant theories and technologies for processing and manufacturing. The thesis completes the development of non-standard complicated tools5 CAD \CAE \ CAM integrated system. The thesis consists of six chapters, dealing with the project's background, system's design and structural design requirements, finite element analysis, CAM, and some concluding remarks based on what was learned during the thesis work. The project's kernel technology is to use finite elements method to analyze the nonstandard complex tools' models using ANS YS large-scaled finite element analysis software.

The CAE software has already attained a great success in injection molding. However, the model built in CAD software cannot be directly used in CAE. The rebuilding of models in CAE software costs time and might generate some unwanted errors. In this thesis, the wire frame (Curve3D) IGES file generated by SolidWorks is used to generate the mid-plane geometry for C-MOLD simulation. By using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, MFC and OpenGL graphic library, the software is developed to produce the inside or outside region and middle plane. This IGES converter software provide easy-to-use graphic user interface and can show the geometric model before and after conversion. By using toolbar and dialog, engineers can use this software very easy and produce IGES file needed for CAE analysis. This IGES converter can reduce engineers’ load and improve production and setup up a foundation on developing mid-plane software.
