Abstract:
This chapter considers a major representational strategy that Leo Tolstoy uses throughout Anna Karenina. By repeatedly focusing on his characters’ performance of routine physical actions, Tolstoy cues readers to draw on the motor memory they have acquired from their own embodied experience. Not only does this technique enable readers to grasp the fictional world with exceptional sensory and affective immediacy, but the ease or fluency with which readers retrieve their background knowledge can also heighten their sense of the fictional world’s familiarity and intimacy. Tolstoy’s handling of novelistic detail demonstrates how literary realism transforms ordinary experiences into a source of aesthetic pleasure.

Abstract:
How, why, and where Matthew read his books is the focus of this chapter, developing recent work on reader reception. Matthew’s reading furniture, his annotations, and marginal comments all illustrate how he used his books and what impact they had on his sermons, political actions, and thought. The chapter examines how he read different types of books, including Church history and anti-Catholic polemics, and explores Matthew’s patterns of reading—alone and with others—as well as his annotations. This chapter shows that other readers used Matthew’s annotations to guide their own reading, and the results can be seen in several works produced by clerics patronized by Matthew. The chapter argues that Matthew’s reading was rarely a solitary experience but engaged with a wide body of literature, and that the effects of that reading were felt in the wider community.
