Abstract:
The rearward propagation of tonal noise from the main fan and the engine core of modern high bypass aeroengines is one of the current demanding applications of CAA methods. One of the main features of this problem is the radiation of tones from main fan and turbine through the shear layers of core and bypass jets. This can approximately be described by a solution of the linearized perturbed Euler equations over a sheared turbulent averaged base flow field. However, these equations not only describe sound propagation, but also provide a stability analysis for the sheared base flow. Three techniques with the potential to calculate an acoustic solution and at the same time to suppress the instability are compared in this paper. The radiation of a source from a two-dimensional hot jet, chosen from a CAA workshop on benchmark problems, is considered first. Then, the techniques are adopted for the simulation of a single azimuthal mode radiating from the bypass duct of a turbofan engine, as an example for the realistic application. The first technique is based on filtering the mean flow field, over which the perturbation equations are solved. A low-order filter is applied. Subsequently, an adaption of this method, which considers a filtering of the mean flow derivatives in addition, is proved to be very beneficial. The result then reflects the analytical solution of the benchmark problem very well. The second technique filters the source terms in the governing equations. In a first attempt, all mean flow derivatives are neglected to suppress the instability. A more physical motivated variant of the approach neglects only source terms in the momentum equations. However, both provide unsatisfactory predictions of the acoustic field for the benchmark. Finally, a third technique is implemented, which considers the modification of the velocity derivatives in the momentum equations, as this method has demonstrated one of the best predictions for the benchmark problem. Nevertheless, the latter technique has no 3D extension and thus fails in suppressing the instability waves in the turbofan application.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper synthesises and analyses archaeological data on the Nitrianska Blatnica II hoard of metal artefacts (Ha C1a; 800–725 BC) from the hilltop settlement of Marhát. Currently, this is the largest metal deposit from the Final Bronze Age in Slovakia, providing a fundamental chronological synchronization of the Ha C1a sub-phase with Northern Italy and Central and Southeastern Europe. A spectral analysis of the serial circular jewellery shows a uniform origin from a unique metallurgical workshop and contributes to the scientific discussion with important data on economic operations in the Carpathian Basin. The closest analogies to the bronze vessels and gold cylindrical earrings come from the most important contemporary sites of the Hallstatt and Mezöcsát cultures and stimulate the notion of a large intercultural trade in prestigious goods and the practices of the aristocratic population of the Final Bronze Age in Central Europe.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract A core ethos of the engineering discipline is to tackle large, complex problems of central importance to society utilizing a range of technical knowledge and skills. One major barrier to this goal is the lack of diversity in the discipline, leading to a shortage of the talent pool, reduced capacity for innovation, and it can negatively impact the educational experience of engineering students. To respond to this charge, the Broadening Participation Committee (BPart) of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering’s Design Engineering Division (ASME DED) has conducted a number of activities aimed at fostering a diverse professional community and addressing the needs of people typically under-represented within engineering. This includes professional development workshops, networking sessions, travel funds available for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and micro-grants available for parents with young children. This paper discusses the activities provided by the BPart Committee since 2013, as well as the outcomes and additional initiatives that occurred as a result of the BPart Activities. Examples of such activities include seven professional development workshops, three workshop panels, and seven networking receptions. In the workshop participant feedback, we see some effect when there is a female presenter over a male presenter, but this effect appears to be limited. A discussion on future activities of BPart is presented in order to continue to grow and foster this community.

Abstract:
NASA has conducted a series of Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) Workshops on Benchmark Problems to develop a set of realistic CAA problems that can be used for code validation. In the Third (1999) and Fourth (2003) Workshops, the single airfoil gust response problem, with real geometry effects, was included as one of the benchmark problems. Respondents were asked to calculate the airfoil RMS pressure and far-field acoustic intensity for different airfoil geometries and a wide range of gust frequencies. This paper presents the validated solutions that have been obtained to the benchmark problem, and in addition, compares them with classical flat plate results. It is seen that airfoil geometry has a strong effect on the airfoil unsteady pressure, and a significant effect on the far-field acoustic intensity. Those parts of the benchmark problem that have not yet been adequately solved are identified and presented as a challenge to the CAA research community.

Abstract:
A design roadmap is a canvas that facilitates embedding user experience design goals into the earliest stages of the design process by envisioning how a concept can evolve over time to meet changing user needs. This paper explores the development of design roadmap canvases by product design teams in an educational setting. It does so by (1) examining the design roadmapping workshop deliverables from new product development student teams at the University of California, Berkeley between 2014–2017 and (2) analyzing 107 survey responses from students in those workshops about their design roadmapping experiences. The paper describes the benefits to students using design roadmapping and insights into how best to engage students in design roadmapping exercises. Finally, based on the challenges students had with the process employed in the experiment, recommendations are provided to help educators and practitioners make productive use of design roadmaps.

Megas, Katerina N., Michael Fagan, and David Lemire. Workshop Summary Report for “Building the Federal Profile for IoT Device Cybersecurity” Virtual Workshop. National Institute of Standards and Technology, January 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.6028/nist.ir.8322.

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes the feedback received on the work of the NIST Cybersecurity for IoT program on device cybersecurity at a virtual workshop in July 2020. NISTIR 8259, Foundational Cybersecurity Activities for IoT Device Manufacturers and NISTIR 8259A, IoT Device Cybersecurity Capability Core Baseline provide general guidance on how manufacturers can understand and approach their role in supporting customers’ cybersecurity needs and goals. As discussed in those documents, specific sectors and use cases may require more specific guidance than what is included in NISTIR 8259A’s core baseline for IoT devices. NIST conducted the virtual workshop “Building the Federal Profile for IoT Device Cybersecurity” to discuss and gather community input on the creation of a federal profile of the core baseline for use by federal agencies. This publication provides a summary of the workshop. The baseline will be published in NISTIR 8259D, Profile of the IoT Core Baseline for the Federal Government.

Full text
Abstract:
This special report summarizes the regional workshop held 24–26 April 2018 at the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Ecological Services Office in Carlsbad, California on the importance of collaboration among federal, state, and nongovernmental agencies to facilitate the recovery of threatened and endangered species (TES). This workshop focused primarily on one species, the least Bell’s vireo (LBVI), and how to achieve full recovery and eventual delisting through agency partnerships. A major theme of the workshop was applying the Endangered Species Act (ESA) Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning process as a building block towards recovery of LBVI—as well as other threatened, endangered, and at-risk riparian species within the Southwest. The main objective of this workshop was to assemble an interagency and interdisciplinary group of wildlife biologists and managers to detail how the Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning approach, in consultation with the USFWS, can assist in the recovery of LBVI primarily on federal lands but also other public and private lands. Goals of this workshop were to (1) review Section 7(a)(1); (2) outline LBVI ecosystem processes, life history, threats, and conservation solutions; and (3) develop and organize agency commitments to collaborative conservation practices.

Schneider, Sarah, Daniel Wolf, and Astrid Schütz. Workshop for the Assessment of Social-Emotional Competences : Application of SEC-I and SEC-SJT. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-49180.

Full text
Abstract:
The modular workshop offers a science-based introduction to the concept of social-emotional competences. It focuses on the psychological assessment of such competences in in institutions specialized in the professional development of people with learning disabilities. As such, the workshop is primarily to be understood as an application-oriented training programme for professionals who work in vocational education and use (or teach the usage of) the assessment tools SEC-I and SEC-SJT (Inventory and Situational Judgment Test for the assessment of social-emotional competence in young people with (sub-) clinical cognitive or psychological impairment) which were developed at the University of Bamberg. The workshop comprises seven subject areas that can be flexibly put together as required: theoretical basics and definitions of social-emotional competence, the basics of psychological assessment, potential difficulties in its use, usage of the self-rating scale, the situational judgment test, the observer-rating scale, and objective observation of behaviour. The general aim of this workshop is to learn how to use and apply the assessment tools in practical settings.

Pokrzywinski, Kaytee, Kaitlin Volk, Taylor Rycroft, Susie Wood, Tim Davis, and Jim Lazorchak. Aligning research and monitoring priorities for benthic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins : a workshop summary. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41680.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2018, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center partnered with the US Army Corps of Engineers–Buffalo District, the US Environmental Protection Agency, Bowling Green State University, and the Cawthron Institute to host a workshop focused on benthic and sediment-associated cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins, particularly in the context of harmful algal blooms (HAB). Technical sessions on the ecology of benthic cyanobacteria in lakes and rivers; monitoring of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins; detection of benthic and sediment-bound cyanotoxins; and the fate, transport, and health risks of cyanobacteria and their associated toxins were presented. Research summaries included the buoyancy and dispersal of benthic freshwater cyanobacteria mats, the fate and quantification of cyanotoxins in lake sediments, and spatial and temporal variation of toxins in streams. In addition, summaries of remote sensing methods, omic techniques, and field sampling techniques were presented. Critical research gaps identified from this workshop include (1) ecology of benthic cyanobacteria, (2) identity, fate, transport, and risk of cyanotoxins produced by benthic cyanobacteria, (3) standardized sampling and analysis protocols, and (4) increased technical cooperation between government, academia, industry, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders. Conclusions from this workshop can inform monitoring and management efforts for benthic cyanobacteria and their associated toxins.

Abstract:
Across the Blue Economy, science must play a fundamental role in moving us away from business as usual to a more sustainable pathway. It provides evidence to inform policy by understanding baselines, trends and tipping points, as well as the multiple and interacting effects of human activities and policy interventions. Measuring progress depends on strong evidence and requires the design of a monitoring framework based on well-defined objectives and indicators, informed by the diverse disciplines required to inform progress on cross-cutting policy objectives such as the Just Transition. The differences between the scientific and policy processes are stark and affect interaction between them, including, among other factors, the time pressures of governmental decision-making, and the lack of support and reward in academia for policy engagement. To enable improved integration, the diverse nature of the science / policy interface is important to recognise – improved communication between scientists and policy professionals within government is important, as well as interaction with the wider academic community through secondments and other mechanisms. Skills in working across boundaries are valuable, requiring training and professional recognition. We also discussed the science needs across the themes of the Just Transition, Sustainable Seafood, Nature-based Solutions and the Circular Economy, where we considered: • What research and knowledge can help us manage synergies and trade-offs? • Where is innovation needed to promote synergies? • What type of indicators, data and evidence are needed to measure progress? The insights developed through dialogue among participants on these themes are outlined in Section 4 of this report.
