Abstract:
The inverse sandwich Ca–C8H8–Ca is predicted to be open-shell singlet Ca–C8H8–Ca. The singlet diradical character is caused by the C8H8 ligand preventing the spin-paired electrons of different calcium atoms from forming Ca–Ca bonds. A direct Ca–Ca bond is favorable in closed-shell singlet (DME)3Ca–C8H8–Ca(DME)3, because dimethyl ether molecules could push the spin-paired electrons of different calcium atoms to migrate towards the direction of Ca–Ca bonding.

Abstract:
Abstract Adam Pastor was an itinerant Anabaptist bishop in the Lower Rhine region. Ordained by Menno Simons around 1542, he is best known for the division that unfolded between Dirk Philips and Menno Simons, which led to the first schism in Mennonitism. Although sixteenth-century contemporaries described him as an important bishop alongside Menno, Mennonite historiography since then has largely ignored him. Pastor’s theological views are known primarily from his Onderscheytboeck [Book of Distinctions] of ca. 1554. The recent discovery of an earlier and hitherto unknown version of this writing, however, demonstrates a more gradual development of Adam Pastor’s “spiritualism.” In 1547 Pastor opposed Menno’s Melchiorite doctrine of the incarnation. Several years later, he arrived at the inevitable conclusion and denied—at least implicitly—the Trinity. The result was his break with Menno and Dirk and a subsequent division between the bishops from the Northern Netherlands and those of the Lower Rhine.

Abstract:
GWU working class theatre in Afrikaans (ca. 1930 - ca. 1950)In 1984 Elsabé Brink drew attention to plays, prose and poetry written between 1930 and 1950 in Afrikaans by members of the Garment Workers’ Union (GWU). Scholars such as Stander and Willemse (1992), Van Niekerk (1996) and Van Wyk (1995, 1997) have also referred to GWU plays. Apart from these overviews, GWU plays as such have not yet received the attention they deserve. This article presents a revaluation, initially by providing an overview of their contents, followed by an examination of cultural, economic and political influences. It is argued that - retrospectively - the GWU plays reflected a unique cultural specificity from the framework established by Sitas (1986) for more contemporary working class theatre.

Abstract:
The activity of the Ca pump of human red blood cells was studied in resealed ghosts as a function of intracellular free Ca (fCai). Resealed ghosts were made by the agarose column method to contain, in addition to other constituents, less than 0.1 microM fCai, 100 microM arsenazo III, and either 1 mM ATP plus an ATP regenerating system (active ghosts) or no added ATP and no regenerating system (passive ghosts). The rate of Ca influx into these ghosts was manipulated by suspending them in solutions containing various combinations of free Ca (1-30 microM) and the Ca ionophore A23187 (0.1-0.7 microM). Entering Ca increased the fCai and stimulated the pump in active ghosts. In passive ghosts, all the Ca movement could be described by a single rate constant. The activity of the Ca pump was calculated from the rate of net Ca uptake in the active ghosts, using the rate constant for passive Ca movement as determined in the passive ghosts. fCai and the rates of Ca transport in both active and passive ghosts were calculated from the absorbance of entrapped arsenazo III. In general, increasing fCai from 1 to 10 microM activated the pump. Higher fCai caused an inhibition compared with peak activity. The maximum rate of pumping was 80 microM/min. The major new finding is that the rate of active transport at a given fCai appeared to vary with the rate of fCai accumulation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
