Abstract:
The duala, a small bantu-speaking population group located in coastal cameroon, emerged during the pre-colonial and the colonial periods as a powerful economic force. They lacked the usual forms of wealth, basing their strategy of production in a two-fold system of social networks : one made up of their allies and the other of their dependents. In 1884, germany established a protectorate over cameroon and this eventually resulted in duala middlemen traders being evicted from their role as exclusive brokers in local trade. Cocoa growing then provided an opportunity for the most successful duala merchants to reinvest the material assets previously used in commercial activities in new and lucrative ventures. Thus using land and slaves from trade, the duala opened up in the 1890s large cocoa plantations in the inland regions. In 1907, they expanded their cocoa farms in the tiko lowlands. The expension of duala cocoa enterprises brought about changes in the earlier pattern of land acquisition and the labour relationship between duala planters and their servile workers. Throughout the french mandate period, duala entrepreneurs invested in real estate, academic education, and timber businesses and somehow succeeded in adapting their entrepreneurial skills and strategy to a changing environment by a cunning manipulation of social relations

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
This thesis proposes to improve the efficiency of public illumination systems by means of AC chopper based power converters. A comparative study of high performance AC/AC converters feeding high pressure sodium lamps on mains frequency is presented. These converters are obtained using standard DC/DC topologies with bi-directional switches (four quadrants). A high pressure lamp ballast design methodology is also presented, based on the suppositions of high input power factor and without exciting acoustic resonances at destructive levels. The topologies used are the Buck-Boost, Ćuk, SEPIC and ZETA operating on continuous current mode, with or without input filter, and an ignition circuit. The converters' switching frequencies are 33 kHz feeding the lamp at low frequency (mains frequency). The ignition circuit providing the high voltage required to guarantee the initial arc to start-up the lamp, is presented, analyzed and optimized in the thesis. To control the ballast a 32 bits microcontroller is used, contributing to reduce the component count and the overall system cost. The base to propose a new control design methodology and power circuit parts specification is the Brazilian standards and a comparison with the electromagnetic ballasts output waveforms. Experimental results supplying a 70 W HPS lamp, connected to the mains (220 V ±20% e 60 Hz) through the proposed ballasts, are presented in order to validate the thesis.

Abstract:
Absolute differential cross-sections have been measured for elastic π± scattering on ¹²C, ⁴⁰Ca, and ⁴⁸Ca using the QQD Spectrometer. The ¹²C data are in good agreement with (Sob 84a), indicating that the overall normalization of the data is good. The π⁺ ⁴⁰Ca data does not agree with the previously published data of (Pre 81) but fits the potential calculation using the SET E parameters (Car 82) better. Data for ⁴⁸Ca and π⁻⁴⁰Ca have not been previously published. An optical potential model was used to describe the data. The potential parameters were fixed by fitting to the ⁴⁰Ca absolute cross-sections. The π⁻ differential cross-section ratios of the measured pair, (⁴⁸Ca, ⁴⁰Ca), were compared to calculations for which the ⁴⁸Ca neutron distribution had been fitted, either by varying the Fermi parameters, or by adding a truncated series of orthogonal polynomials to a starting Fermi form. Two forms of orthogonal polynomials were used; spherical Bessel functions as used in (Gyl 84, Bar 85)), and Laguerre polynomials as used in (Bar 85). The rms radii differences obtained from the Fermi form fitting were found not to be independent of the optical potential used and to be sensitive to the inclusion of the ratio data in the diffractive region. Difficulties were encountered in obtaining reliable results from the orthogonal polynomial fits. The rms radii difference produced by the polynomial fits were not in agreement with results from the Fermi function fit. The neutron density distribution difference obtained from the polynomial fit is similar in form to the results of (Ray 81), but the distribution peak is shifted toward the nuclear center. The rms radii differences found from the Fermi function and Fourier-Laguerre analysis are; Fermi Fourier-Laguerre Δnn',.222±.048 .110 ± .022 (fm)

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis presents a detailed list of mensuration and proportion canons written between 1400 and 1600 and an analysis of several of those canons. Proportion canons are a subset of mensuration canons, pieces in which one melody, under different rhythmic interpretations according to the rules of mensuration, appears simultaneously in more than one voice. The type of mensuration and proportion canons discussed in this thesis display simultaneous entry of the voices: all voices begin together and sing through the same music at different speeds. This type of composition is difficult to create, and places extreme demands on composers' ingenuity. Existing analysis of such pieces is extremely rare and not particularly revealing of compositional process. This thesis presents a method of analysis that explains proportion and mensuration canons in terms of initial conditions of pitch transposition and mensuration, and explores the contrapuntal options thus made available to the composer.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Zambiasi, Roberto. "'Minima sensibilia'. The Medieval Latin Debate (ca. 1250-ca. 1350) and Its Roots." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023UPSLP006.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on one of the least studied topics in Medieval Latin Aristotelian natural philosophy (ca. 1250-ca. 1350), i.e., the so-called topic of "minima sensibilia". If, as claimed most notably in "Physics" VI, magnitudes are (potentially) infinitely divisible, a dilemma arises with respect to the limits of the divisibility of sensible qualities through the division of the matter (considered as an extended magnitude) with which they are united. Either sensible qualities are also (potentially) infinitely divisible (but this implies that the senses should have an infinite power in order to perceive them, against a fundamental Aristotelian assumption concerning the limits of every power existing in nature), or they are not (potentially) infinitely divisible (in this case, however, there would be portions of matter that can neither be cognised by the senses nor, evidently, by the intellect, and, what is worse, sensible entities would be ultimately composed of them, something entirely unacceptable in the Aristotelian worldview). To solve the dilemma, Aristotle, in Chapter 6 of the "De sensu et sensato" (445b3-446a20), makes use of the distinction between act and potency, affirming that sensible qualities are infinitely divisible in potency as part of the whole to which they belong, but there are minimal quantities of matter that can exist in act on their own endowed with their sensible qualities. The thesis investigates the reflection conducted by Medieval Latin commentators of the "De sensu et sensato" (always read in connection with their Greek and Islamic sources) on the subject of "minima sensibilia", using it as a privileged gateway to study from a new and original point of view the Medieval Latin conception of the ontology and of the epistemology of sensible qualities. Indeed, through a close scrutiny of the debate (which is accompanied by a thorough reconstruction of the complex manuscript tradition of Medieval Latin "De sensu" commentaries, that have hitherto been largely neglected by scholars) it is demonstrated that Medieval Latin commentators progressively developed a conception according to which sensible qualities can exist on their own in the natural world without being perceptible in act due to the smallness of the matter with which they are united. Such sensible qualities (that are sometimes called "insensibilia propter parvitatem") can, nevertheless, become perceptible in act by uniting with each other. Thanks to this fundamental development, not only sensible qualities started to be understood mostly in autonomy from their role in perception, but the sensible world became suddenly much more extended than the world that can be perceived by the senses, with the consequence that the confidence in the human ability to cognise its ultimate structure began to crumble

Lee, Stephen Michael. "A commentary on Suetonius’ Galba." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25455.

Full text
Abstract:
It is difficult to ascertain the reason why the Lives of Suetonius have been so neglected by English-speaking scholars. In the historical significance of the period they cover, in the light they throw upon Roman life and manners and as a rich mine of anecdotes concerning Roman emperors, they have always been regarded as a most important source of information. There have been, however, few commentaries devoted to the Lives. The Galba has been particularly disregarded. Not since Mooney's edition of 1930 has there been any complete English commentary on the Life. However, other factors than the lack of a recent edition contributed to the choice of the Galba as the subject of this thesis. The Life deals with one of the most remarkable periods of Roman history, with the decline of the Julio-Claudian line and the subsequent political upheaval. It is also typical of Suetonius' style of biography in its impartiality, the structure and organization of its narrative, and its linguistic style. Finally, in the parallel accounts of Galba's life by Tacitus, Dio and Plutarch there exist constant points of reference that are vital for reasons of characterisation and historical value. It has been my aim in this thesis to produce a critical commentary on the Galba that both demonstrates the peculiar characteristics of the work and evaluates the contributions of modern scholarship. The thesis falls into three parts. The first chapter deals with the life of Suetonius and includes a discussion of the problems caused by the discovery of the Hippo Inscription. Subsequent sections are devoted to the date of composition of the Lives, the contentious question of Suetonius' sources and, finally, the manuscript tradition. Chapter two consists of a text of the Galba based on that of Ihm ( 1958). Some variations have been made and defended in the Commentary. Chapter three, the Commentary, constitutes the bulk of the thesis and is a section-by-section discussion of historical, textual and linguistic points arising from the text. The method of citation, through out, is by name of author and year of publication only. Full details can be found in the bibliography at the end of the thesis.

Abstract:
Filarete's treatise presents architecture, the new archaized mode of building, to Francesco Sforza as the means to historiate and recuperate his insurgent regime, which had overturned the preceding dynastic order of power. This thesis shows how the treatise tried to persuade a powerful but retardatory new prince not yet absorbed by the legitimizing narrative of a renascence of antiquity. It focuses on the treatise's narrative, and places it in its political situation, to show that Filarete made a dramatic, polemical opposition between building and architecture, which he will be shown to have defined as those techniques of assuring the arche.

Renault, Jean-Baptiste. "L'écrit diplomatique à Saint-Victor de Marseille et en Provence (ca. 950 - ca. 1120)." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013STRAG037.

Full text
Abstract:
By the articulation of two main issues, i. e. the existence of a "diplomatic area" understood as a cultural space delimited through the practices of document writing, and the development of centers of writing, this study highlights the increasingly importance and contrasting influence of the ecclesiastical institutions on the diplomatic writing in Provence in the 10th and 11th centuries. The circulation of men and formulaic patterns made of western Provence, from about 950 to 1010, a network that allowed the spreading of common practices. In the early 11th century, one sees a break in this evolution as a consequence of the rapid decline of the use of diplomatics for private interactions and the disappearance of scribes who used to have a large clientele in the cities. Thanks to a better managing of the writing of documents in the first half of the 11th century, the scriptoria have not modified in the same way the formulaic patterns. The scribes of the abbey of Saint-Victor of Marseilles developed a highly original diplomatic practice based on stylistic and rhetorical devices, which are reflected in the preambles and the pastoral references praising the alms of aristocratic families. A second break with the traditions occurred at Saint-Victor in the middle of the 11th century, when the home-made formulas were replaced by simplified ones. The care Saint-Victor took of the appearance of the documents shows a special concern for the media feature of the document, which is also apparent in the use of archives and their valorization through the classification of charters and the compilation of a large cartulary

Håkansson, Jacob, and Isidora Vakaricic. "Produktionsflödesanalys - CA-Verken i Sävsjö." Thesis, Växjö University, School of Technology and Design, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-1536.

Abstract:

This diplomawork is a study of the making of hydraulic cylinders at CA-Verken, a Swedish company located in Sävsjö. The last two years has showed a substantial increase of the company’s turnover. The only remaining obstacle of an ongoing expansion is the limited capacity of the company’s production.

The purpose of this diplomawork is, for that particular reason, to study CA-Verkens production flow in order to identify the bottleneck-issues and ultimately be able to suggest possible solutions and improvements concerning the production process.

The theoretic foundation of this study is based on the Theory of Constraints (TOC). Interviews, company business systems and observations have been used as important sources during the collection of data. By analysing the production flow concerning the cylinders, which represents the greatest deal of the company’s turnover, the assembly was identified as a bottleneck-issue.

In order to optimize the torrent of production it’s necessary for the company to increase the efficiency of the assembly and eliminate different disturbances as well as all unnecessary wastefulness in the process.

In the Age of the Anthropocene, human activities have greatly altered and transformed all aspects of the geological environment, typically extracting what is considered valuable and leaving behind degraded landscapes. Often existing in between the city and wilderness nature, these landscapes are largely forgotten and assumed to always have been like that. How can we re-engage with these landscapes and can they become a meaningful part of our culture? A prime example is Owens Lake in eastern California. It has a rich history: earliest agricultural domestication, silver and salt mining, death by a greedy neighbor far south, worst particulate matter pollution, and a surprising resurrection. Starting in the early 2000s, Owens Lake was carved up into 'cells' and a new infrastructure of pipes, roads, sensors, and dust monitoring equipment was overlaid. Each cell was re-tilled, re-watered, re-planted, or re-paved, resulting in a strange yet fascinating ecology where multiple "natures" (wild, artificial, and reconstructed) co-exist uncannily. As state-owned land, public engagement was a required part of the dust mitigation efforts. Architecture, an important contributor to anthropogenic change, offers the opportunity to re-engage with the site. Stan Allen writes that "any work of architecture is (first) a transformation of the landscape." [1] Inevitably, architecture sits on and interacts with land, is composed of materials extracted from the land, and most importantly, reorders the landscape through artificial constructs. Here, a network of architectural interventions draw people, whether casual passerby, adventure seekers, or scientific researchers, to key areas around Owens Lake to discover the human and non-human dynamics that shape this particular place and whose presence re-shape the landscape they are situated in.

Abstract:
L’elaborato è' strutturato in tre capitoli.

Abstract:
The study of patristic quotations of the Greek New Testament has proven valuable in the field of textual criticism as a means of locating variant readings both chronologically and geographically, facilitating the reconstruction of the development of the different textual groups. This thesis will document the Pauline citations, adaptations and allusions of Didymus of Alexandria, and then determine their textual affinities, along the lines of earlier studies in this field. Using the methodology developed by B. Ehrman, including both a statistical analysis and a method of group profiling, this study concludes that the text of Paul in Didymus clearly belongs to the Alexandrian group. An appendix giving suggestions for corrections and additions to the critical apparatuses of both the 27th edition of the Nestle-Aland text and the 4th edition of the United Bible Societies text of the Greek New Testament has also been provided.

Full text
Abstract:
We show, by internal analysis of the texts and references to other contemporary texts, that from 1470 to 1550 the French polyphonic chanson reveals more than ever before a strong tendency to pertain to the "popular" and its related categories, the "carnavalesque" and the "grotesque". From a corpus of close to a thousand popular chansons selected according to the courtly and "good life" "registers", we can assert that, in spite of the essentially learned dimension of polyphonic music, it is the textual component that seems to be popular. This is what indicates the study of their carnavalesque images and the analysis of the grotesque structures of the "cris", the combinative chansons, the "caquets" and the "fricassees", the latter proving to be real crossroads where chansons of the time parade. Our theoretical reflections on the notion of "popular", necessary to justify the use of the concept in a corpus whose texts are usually anonymous, prompts us to both avoid source studies and issues of production and reception, by defining the "popular" as an aesthetic category based on stylistic and rhetorical conventions. In this perspective, the principal characteristic of these chansons consists in the omnipresence of the imperative calls to the participation in the "good life", all of which belong to a popular version of the carpe diem. While a type of carnavalesque chanson accumulates the motifs "dansons", "chansons" and "buvons", many constitute often obscene variants of "baisez-moi", and others multiply military orders. The occurrences of these imperative motifs, usually appearing in direct discourse, confirm, with partially imperative imprecations, a vocabulary of the public place, onomatopeia and plays on words, the orality of the register and its belonging to a popular level of discourse corresponding to a less elevated style than the low style of rhetoric.
