Abstract:
[EN] The evaluation study of the quality of service in academic libraries has seen great interest in the Library and Documentation fields. The concern relates to the importance for information professionals to be able to evaluate the service that is provided from the point of view of the user, in order to mobilize resources, to plan new services and to generate solutions to the needs envisioned. To evaluate the quality of service in the context of the academic libraries, first of all it is necessary to understand the quality of service elements and the interaction of these elements in the user perspective. We intend to examine how potential users in an academic library evaluate the quality of services provided. The starting point of our study should answer these two questions: - Which are the dimensions that potential users elect to evaluate the quality of service of an academic library? - Which are the quality dimensions of an academic library with impact on the overall quality perceived by users? The main goals of the study were in the first place: (a) to build a scale to measure the quality of service provided by an academic library as perceived by its users, (b) to test the scale dimensionality, and (c) finally to identify, first, which are the attributes that users considered relevant for the quality perception of the services of an academic library and, on the other hand, how is it evaluated the quality of these services and which are the differential variables that characterize them. This study involved several phases: (a) we collected items in the literature, (b) we held seven focus groups with students and teachers, (c) we developed a questionnaire containing 29 items, (d) a pilot study was made for the final version of the scale, finalizing with (e) the validation of the evaluation instrument. A second goal focused on the analysis of the influence of the variables frequency and duration when the users are using services evaluated by their quality, followed by an analysis of socio-demographic characteristics of students and their influence on the evaluation of quality of service. As a third goal, we intend to examine how the user's perspective differentiates teachers to students when they perceived quality of service. Finally, we conducted an analysis of how the dimensions of quality of service affect the perceived overall quality. The study involved 594 potential users, consisting of students and teachers from an university of Lisbon, Portugal. We had a factorial structure of five dimensions: direct relationship with the user, collections, new technologies, access and reliability. Validation studies have shown good psychometric properties of their respective scale and multidimensionality. The results suggest that users with a medium and high frequency of use of services evaluate the two dimensions, Relationship with the User and Access, more positively than users with low utilization. The results also suggest that users with a time of high and medium use of services evaluate more positively the quality dimension of service Relationship with the User and Global Quality that users who have a shorter duration of use. In the dimension Collections, users with a medium use of services evaluate more positively comparing with the users with high use of services. It was found, for the second goal, that the gender effects translated into a different and positive perception by male students in Relationship dimension comparing with the female students. The age groups of students introduce differences in the perception of quality of service; the younger students differentiate themselves more positively on dimensions Collections and New Technologies compared with the other two age groups; the opposite occurs in the Relationship and Global Quality dimensions. Analyzing the students’ course, we found significant differences in Access dimension between the Psychology and Rehabilitation courses with a more positive evaluation facing the Community Development course. In Relationship dimension, the studies cycle presents a significant difference between the postgraduate students compared to the initial cycle students. Finally, in dimensions New Technologies and Global Quality the results of years of course indicate a lower evaluation of quality of service perceived by the students who attend the 5th year comparing with the 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st year course students; the students of 5th year also differ in two dimensions: Reliability, compared to the fourth grade, and Relationship with the User, compared to the 1st year. Under the user perspective, and comparing with the students, the results showed that teachers present a more favorable perception regarding the dimensions Relationship with the User, New Technologies, Access, Reliability and Global Quality. The results produced by the model of relations, tested through structural equation models, suggest that the Global Quality is predominantly affected by the dimensions of quality of service: Relationship with the User and Collections. The results seem to allow a set of actions within the quality management framework to be taken by the responsible of the information unit in the sense of improving the quality of service and according to the five dimensions indicated, with the nuclear dimensions: Relationship with the User and Collections.

Abstract:
The search activities and information retrieval consist of selecting of the information mass those elements that It assist satisfactorily the information needs of a group or individual, in the instant of your solicitation. Those activities, are own of the professional librarian, because, the essence of the Librarianship consists of locating, to treat, to store, to retrieval and to disseminate the information. But, with the development of the information and communication technologies the storage capacity in databases is growing, as well as the direct access of the users to the information, turning the information retrieval in half electronic a quite complex task. These factors take to investigate if the users have been getting to supply your information needs efficiently, without the professional librarian as intermediate. It was proposed the study of the behavior of a sample of the students of the powders graduation of the UNESP-Marília in the search activities and information retrieval in databases specialized, through the application of questionnaires and observations of your search procedures. With support of pertinent theoretical referential to the theme, the data were tabulated and analyzed quantitative and qualitative. As results, it was verified that several problems impede that the users take advantage of all the potentiality that the bases of data now offer for the information retrieval. It is ended that, the studies on the behavior of the users' search and the inherent knowledge to the librarian, they can contribute to the design of systems of information retrieval and more efficient search interfaces.

Abstract:
The appearance of electronic journals as a new media has transformed academic publishing and the services offered by university libraries. The big publishing houses have tackled the change from paper-based scientific journal publishing to electronic formats by introducing a new marketing model: substituting traditional title-by-title subscriptions to a system of subscribing to licence packages, known as the "Big Deal". In answer to this, the libraries have joined forces to negotiate better terms for the joint acquisition of electronic content. In the case of the University Library Consortium of Catalonia (CBUC), analysis has been carried out of the use of electronic journals to which libraries have subscribed. Based on the usage statistics supplied by the publishers, analysis was conducted on the use of subscription to seven electronic journals packages (American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), Blackwell, Elsevier, Emerald, Springer and Wiley) amongst the seven universities that made up the CBUC –Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Universidad de Girona (UDG), Universitat de Lleida (UDL) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV)– in 2005. The results showed that the universities, regardless of their size, had different levels of use of the journals. The results also showed differences between different scientific fields. These differences in use were referenced against each university's collection of back issues and with the institution's research activity. It was also seen that journals that were not previously subscribed to showed very low levels of use. Finally, the analysis showed that the level of use of a scientific journals can serve as an indicator of the research a university carries out and for its own evaluation purposes. Use can be taken into account when distributing the cost of subscribing to electronic journals.

Abstract:
The research sought to examine the effect of literacy on access to, and utilization of agricultural information for household food security at Chirau Communal lands in Zimbabwe. The study was influenced by the diffusion of innovations approach based on interviews, observation and document study. Selected female farmers from Chirau communal lands were respondents to the self administered interviews and focus group discussions. Representatives from, Agriculture Extension and the Ministry of Agriculture were key informants. Systematic Random sampling was used to select 100 female respondents from the age of 18 to above 80 from wards 1 to 10 of Chirau Rural District in Zimbabwe. Data was analyzed into themes and coded for statistical analysis using the SPSS. The country is faced with food insecurity and the main findings of this study support the view that women play an active role in food production but their potential is limited by inadequate levels of literacy that affect the way they access and utilize resources for sustainable agriculture and household food security among other factors. This may be generalized to the situation of female farmers in Zimbabwe. Improved literacy competencies among the female farmers in Zimbabwe lends itself as one of the interventions that may assist in improving access to information and its effective utilization.. This calls decision-makers to boost literacy for women, develop available agricultural information resources and harness effort towards making them accessible. While interventions may be multi-sectored, the role of government is stressed in this report.

Abstract:
The “use” of information and library resources and services is frequently presented in Library and Information Science LIS) literature as a primitive concept: an idea so fundamental to the theoretical framework at hand as to be indefinable—even when presented as an operational variable. In fact, an examination of the LIS literature reveals that use is a multi-dimensional concept that requires clarification for effective empirical examination. This dissertation employs the Evolutionary Concept Analysis (ECA) method developed by nursing scholar Beth L. Rodgers (2000) to consider representations of use in a 200-item sample of LIS journal literature. ECA investigates the development of concepts by examining the attributes and characteristics of a concept as represented within a specific discipline (e.g., empathy as a concept in nursing) and within specific chronological, disciplinary, and theoretical contexts. Rather than to provide “the” definition of use, the purpose of this study is to illuminate the difficulties presented by the lack of clarity surrounding the use concept in LIS literature and practice. This process has produced a Typology of Use that can serve as a springboard to future empirical and theoretical projects in this area.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of the service quality of FECAP Central Library from its user’s perspective. In order to meet the objectives of the study, SERVQUAL methodology was used. Information was gathered via questionnaires which consisted of structured questions. All the closed ended questions were designed to elicit responses on a five-point Likert scale to measure both respondent satisfaction and importance of service quality. The results show that FECAP Central Library is not lacking quality service. The concept of service quality assessment through SERVQUAL is relatively a new concept among Brazilian librarians and there is a lack of previous studies using this methodology in private institutions academic libraries. Thus, this study intends to be a report to the librarians interested in measuring user’s satisfaction and also in contributing to the quality success of their institutions.

Abstract:
This research aims to understand the different practices and strategies early career researchers and PhD students from the social sciences have in Social Networking Sites (SNSs) for science communication in one particular country: Brazil. Following this purpose, the central research question is which are the motives and rationale of the researchers for using social networking sites for science communication. Two sub-questions arise from this general research question: How do practices and strategies relate to the academic system of this country? And How do the traditional science communication practices translate into the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS)? This research is empirically oriented building up on case studies in Brazil. This study makes use of the adaptation that Van Dijck (2013) made of the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and the review of affordances of social media platforms (Bucher & Helmond, 2016) to apply it to the study of social media as the theoretical approach. The methodological approach of this research is qualitative, using both interviews and netnography as research methods. The primary motivations for using different Social Networking Sites are all related to connectivity: communication with peers, to the public and research subjects, updating themselves about their research issue, dissemination of research, availability of papers, self-branding and participation in interest groups are the most mentioned. These motivations translate into cross-posting practices and integrated communication strategies -combining online and offline elements- on the different Social Networking Sites. These motivations translate into perceived affordances all related to social affordances, therefore, social capital processes: availability, scalability, visibility and multimediality. The academic system of the country has remained unchanged as it privileges traditional scholarly academic formats; therefore, early career researchers and PhD students from the social sciences only use the different Social Networking Sites (SNS) as a side aid but not as a primary means of communication. Social media is underused as a means of public science communication, even though these platforms offer a lot of advantages for pursuing such issue. Traditional science communication practices translate into the use of Social Networking Sites (SNSs). The most important issue that came out in this report was the fact that social affordances provided by Social Networking (SNSs) are still required to be endorsed by real life meeting to start further collaboration and the fact that English is the preferred language for such issues.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore and investigate the phenomenon of rural community libraries (RCLs) in Sub-Saharan Africa through an in-depth study of one such library located in Uganda. Specifically, it sets out to investigate the role of the RCL in relation to student learning. This is done by a thorough account of what the library offers, who the users are and what they do at the library. To approach the question of student learning through the library, the study includes two models on libraries‘ influence on student learning developed for a Western context. The methodology covers both quantitative and qualitative methods to produce rich and varied data, but the main emphasis is on the latter. In addition to traditional data collection techniques, the study includes a kind of improvised action research that contributed to the range of data collected. The library in question is above average in terms of materials and use, and its existence seems to increase the amount of reading, particularly the number of storybooks read by pupils. The secondary students, who are the focus of this study, mainly read their own notes, schoolbooks (pamphlets, textbooks and past papers) and to some extent fiction. This group does read more due to the library, it seems, especially schoolbooks, but the library‘s contribution to their learning beyond mere reading, such as study skills, use of reference works and co-operation, is somewhat limited. There are five conditions that work against the library having a full potential impact on student learning: the curriculum, the exams and the traditional way of teaching; lack of reading culture; lack of library tradition; limited resources; and the problems related to the language of instruction. Despite these limitations, by bringing books to a print-poor environment the library does make a difference.

Abstract:
Information technologies are a fundamental part today within a library or information center, with the passage of time these centers or libraries must make use of these tools and resort to updating methods in order to maintain an optimal level in its heritage and increase the scope of information produced worldwide, this is thanks to the adaptation of information and communication technologies. The information centers make use of this important tool since, being for a specific user community, the databases also have special characteristics according to the needs that these users present. The objective of this study is to determine the level of use of digital resources, in this case the databases that are accessed by the agreements maintained by UNAM or those that are open access, this study is carried out carried out at the Library and Information Research Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The most relevant thing in this study will be to be able to identify who are the users (academic technicians or researchers) who make the most use of this information resource and the frequency in the usability of said databases to support themselves in the development of their research activities.

Abstract:
Despite of the recognition in recent years that information is essential component in the development of Brazilian society, there are processes within the area of Information Science in Brazil, specifically of Librarianship that have not yet formed a solid body of theory about the importance of control and records management of the records in university libraries. The point of view of anticipating the need informational in order to facilitate the process of transferring information subsidize the training of knowledge. The collection development, an activity that gives powers to the librarian to turn a collection relevant to the users in this process of knowledge construction is, however, a process that is not effectively part of the routine of Brazilian libraries. Not only by operational difficulties existing in relation to the size of collections to be known, but above all, by the lack of a set of theoretical content in this subject, which enables librarians to win the challenges to an effective management of a collection. This paper highlights these shortcomings, visible in practices Brazilian librarians having a cultural component whose origins pass through the national policy choices of adoption to the external models, instead of creating a own model. Therefore, it is visible today, the need to a specialization through converging application of methodologies for the management and treatment of the collection, as a scientific object. object.

Abstract:
The thesis is originally written in English, and a full translated version in Indonesian is also available. Since 2001, a movement of individuals, neighbourhood and community organizations and NGOs starting and running their own libraries has emerged in Indonesia. Called Taman Bacaans (TBs) - reading gardens - these simple libraries, often hosted in somebody’s house, or in a community building, provide easy and informal access to books, as well as frequent literacy programming. This thesis traces the historical heritage of these TBs back to the early renting libraries of peranakan Chinese in the 19th century, through Balai Pustaka and the public library movement under Sukarno. The modern TB emerges in the 1980s, the government attempts a wide-scale implementation of TBs in the 1990s, and a community movement finally emerges in 2001. Using interviews with informants and newspaper articles, blogs, mailing lists, and NGO and government reports, I describe the process of how the TB movement emerges in Bandung and Yogyakarta. I also identify a number of factors that enabled and supported the movement: inspiring individual role-models, “best-case” libraries, networks and the roles of Islam and nationalism. Finally I provide an overview of the situation today, combining government statistics with the results of a survey conducted in Jakarta, and show that there are three kinds of TBs: those set-up by national, regional or local government (TBMs), those funded by large-scale donors, and independent TBs grounded in the local communities. I conclude with a number of recommendations for government and donors.

The main objective of this work is to analyze, with a certain level of detail, the subject of selection methods and portfolio management from the model of Markowitz, pioneer for his great contribution to the Economic Theory of Finance, to the model of CAPM (Capital Assets Princing Model), passing through other relevant authors who have raised criticisms of the first. We will also consider the relationship between our case study and business investments of an economic nature, since these will be valued by equating a financial investment of similar amount, term and risk. So, it will be the financial market that provides the minimum return required to a productive investment.

Heller, Bruna. "Competências infocomunicacionais: Ações em bibliotecas universitárias do Rio Grande do Sul para combater a desinformação." Thesis, 2021. http://eprints.rclis.org/42643/1/Compet%C3%AAncias%20infocomunicacionais.pdf.

Abstract:
In this work, it was pointed out the infocommunicational competences as a possibility to educate for information in university libraries, based on actions developed by librarians. University libraries are drivers to promote infocommunication skills, playing an essential role in the formation of the academic community, as well as serving as a support for information, in addition to supporting the four pillars of the university: teaching, research, extension and innovation. Under the issue of investigating whether university librarians understand the problem of misinformation as their own and how infocommunication skills can help fight misinformation, the objective of this research is to analyze the implications of infocommunication skills in fighting misinformation in the scope of action of librarians who they work in university libraries. Supported by a theoretical framework, the dissertation discusses the phenomenon of disinformation, the role of university libraries in society, the attribution to librarians of combating disinformation, the impacts of disinformation on democracy in a post-truth scenario and the importance of education for information through the promotion of infocommunication skills. In an empirical collection, based on interviews with university librarians from the south of Rio Grande do Sul, it was discovered how and if the professionals are acting in the fight against misinformation, and how and how their responsibility to combat misinformation is understood. The research uses qualitative, descriptive and exploratory methods, using for data analysis the French-line discourse analysis and elements of infocommunication skills, by Borges (2018, appendix), to relate the actions described by the interviewees with each competence in information and in Communication. Furthermore, the levels of information literacy in university libraries by Uribe-Tirado and Pinto (2014) are considered, in order to show whether the actions promoted have a more consistent focus on training or on literacy/promotion of infocommunicational skills. From the empirical research, the actions that are promoted by the interviewed librarians were listed, relating to infocommunicational skills, in which it could be seen that information skills are usually promoted more than communication skills. It was also observed that the interviewees are concerned with the phenomenon of misinformation and consider it a strong point for their professional performance, but they still do not develop actions that educate for information, with an autonomous or political bias, and do not promote infocommunicational skills yet. in their daily activities, in the case of level initiatives with a greater instrumental focus, which would be level 2 by Uribe-Tirado and Pinto.

Abstract:
Since the identification of a change in the acting in Institute of Information and Science and Technology (IBICT), given the broadening of interaction means with the users, this study aims towards understanding the socio-informational context in changes bearing in sight the theoretical framework of information actions in the ambit of “intermediary information institutions.” The theoretical trajectory suggested that, in the social plan, it would be possible to comprehend the current dynamics around information actions, especially from the technological modifications provided with new hardware, software and, above all, the World Wide Web, which influences the manner and behavior of the processes of search, retrieval, access and use of information by the user. Highlighting the user in this new scenario, this concept was analyzed as a means or a tool to learn two theoretical-informational models. The “systemic model” is characterized in function of the emphasis directed towards the professional and information system. In this model, the flow of information presents a foreseeable chain direction counting on the pretense of knowledge of the target public and of how the system works. In this sense, the “emerging model” spots problems in the previous model as it considers interactive possibilities, interconnectivities and hypertexts provided by the WWW. Given this panorama, it was possible to outline the following assumption: the contemporary socio-informational context and the theoretical construction of the “emerging socio-technical informational model” have been influencing information actions in “information institutions and intermediary systems” in S&T. Under this perspective, the trajectory of the research went through three moments. In the opening moment, a theoretical framework was spotted based on the categories “conceptual focus attributed to the user and to the information” and “nature and focus of the researches”, which helped in the process of visualization of certain analytical aspects aligned with “systemic” or “emerging” models. The identified theoretical framework brought systematizations around the phenomena of search, use, behavior, practice and action of information. In the moment of outlining, the action of information approach was put in context, bringing nearer the concept of the meaning of validation of information, especially to point out research possibilities regarding the use of information. In the last moment, called calculus, the results obtained were articulated so as to allow an interpretation guided by the concept of action of information in S&T. For such, the Brazilian scenario of Information in S&T was put in context oriented by the actions developed in IBICT. This institution was taken as a reference for being responsible for a representational fragment of actions of information in S&T in the country in the ambit of intermediary institutions and systems of information. IBICT operates meta-information aiming towards the access, retrieval and use of information, creating and providing the subsidies for the creation of meta-informational maps, targeting the monitoring and control of information in S&T, as well as performing actions considering criteria of excellence in information and S&T. From the theoretical path and the analysis of the actions from IBICT, the complexity and interdependency of different instances and actions in the ambit of institutions and intermediary systems of information in S&T were identified and criticized, under the orientation from criteria of excellence particular from the phenomena related with information in S&T and, also, under the theoretical influence of the “emerging socio-technical informational model.”

Abstract:
The dissertation presents the outputs of a research carried out during the second semester of 2014 and the first semester of 2015 at Vasconcelos Public Library, located in Buenavista, a neighborhood in Mexico City. The public library is used as a methodological strategy of public space or equipment observation. An ethnographic approach is primarily used, as well as a combination of methods in the several descriptive stages of the space, and for the registry of usage, practices and experiences of the library by users and visitors. The first chapter presents a general overview of the library using the information gathered in a survey applied to users and visitors (BV-CNCA, 2014). Following, a description of the spaces and activities carried out by users is presented in an ethnographic narration. Finally, everyday experiences of users and visitors are presented. The research shows how the conceptions and values around the library’s materiality (features, place configuration or layout, location) and immateriality (conceptions, imaginaries, experiences) influence the way of using and thinking about this equipment. The study concludes that this public architecture spatializes experiences that give a new meaning to the public library as an equipment of urban life, both indoor and outdoor, expanding its present and future history as a public space.
