Winston, Jessica. Legal Satire and the Legal Profession in the 1590s. Edited by Lorna Hutson. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199660889.013.13.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that, in the later sixteenth century, satires and negative comments about lawyers offered a means to shape professional decorum. A signal example is John Davies’s Epigrammes (c.1592–5; pub. c.1598–9), which negatively depict lawyers, Inns-of-Court men, and their social milieu. Yet the Epigrammes differ from contemporary legal satire by presenting, in the speaker of the series, a positive ethos for legal men. In developing these points, this chapter argues for one relationship between the legal and literary cultures of the Inns of Court and rereads Davies’s Epigrammes to show how this verse is similar to and distinctive from later sixteenth-century legal satire.

Full text
Abstract:
Beloved by children and adults worldwide, the writings of C. S. Lewis have a broad and enduring appeal. Although best known for the iconic Chronicles of Narnia series, C. S. Lewis was a man of many literary parts. Already well known as a scholar in the 1930s, he became a famous broadcaster during World War II and wrote in many genres: satire (The Screwtape Letters), science fiction (Perelandra), novels, poetry, and books on Christian belief. C. S. Lewis: A Very Short Introduction delves into the vast corpus of his work, discussing its core themes and lasting appeal. Moving chronologically through Lewis’s life, it provides a picture of the whole man, his work, and his enduring legacy.

Abstract:
‘History, genre, text’ introduces this overview of classical literature, a period spanning over 1,200 years (c.750 bc to ad 500) and explains how these texts survived to this day. The conventional periodization of classical literature — archaic, classical, Hellenistic, and imperial for Greek literature; Republican and imperial for Latin — mirrors the familiar chunks of ancient history. A striking aspect of classical literature is its highly developed sense of genre. But what is genre? Classical literature is characterized by a hierarchy of genres, from ‘high’ forms such as epic, tragedy, and history to ‘low’ forms such as comedy, satire, mime, and epigram.

Abstract:
‘Wit’ considers Shakespeare’s jokes, including puns, double meanings, and the psychology of laughter. Many aspects of Shakespeare’s comedy remain constant, but there are also developments over the course of his career. The earliest plays are more lyrical; the middle ones (c.1600–5) contain harsher satire; and the late plays (written after 1607) have a fairy-tale aspect and are generally referred to as ‘romances’ and not as comedies at all. One striking change comes in 1600 when Shakespeare’s longstanding lead comic actor, Will Kemp, was replaced by a very different performer: the diminutive and satirical writer-performer Robert Armin. This shift produced an immediate alteration in the way that Shakespeare used wit.

Abstract:
Late nineteenth-century and fin-de-siècle writers first engaged with the case study genre in its psychiatric and psychoanalytic manifestations by means of satire, as recounted in Chapter 3. This chapter contrasts the interpretative powers of modern sexual publics and professional elites with the agency of the writer. It does so through enquiry into Panizza’s satirical and delusional negotiation of the boundaries between the two ‘cultures’ of art and science (pace C. P. Snow). Panizza’s first exposure to the case study genre was in the context of his training as a psychiatrist. More than a decade before Freud’s elaborations on the psychoanalytic case, Panizza made the human case study a central form in his literary oeuvre. Panizza anti-psychiatric dystopian work Psichopatia criminalis, represents the only persiflage of a medical case study compilation in European literature. Yet his engagement with the case study genre remains haunted by his own unruly psyche.

Gehring, Wes D. Parody as Film Genre. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400695346.

Full text
Abstract:
Parody is the least appreciated of all film comedy genres and receives little serious attention, even among film fans. This study elevates parody to mainstream significance. A historical overview places the genre in context, and a number of basic parody components, which better define the genre and celebrate its value, are examined. Parody is differentiated from satire, and the two parody types, traditional and reaffirmation, are explained. Chapters study the most spoofed genre in American parody history, the Western; pantheon members of American Film Comedy such as The Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Mae West, and Laurel and Hardy; pivotal parody artists, Bob Hope and Woody Allen; Mel Brooks, whose name is often synonymous with parody; and finally, parody in the 1990s. Films discussed include Destry Rides Again (1939), The Road to Utopia (1945), My Favorite Brunette (1947), The Paleface (1948), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993) and Scream (1996). This examination of parody will appeal to scholars and students of American film and film comedy, as well as those interested in the specific comedians discussed and the Western genre. Gehring's work will also find a place in American pop culture studies and sociological studies of the period from the 1920s to the 1990s. The book is carefully documented and includes a selected bibliography and filmography.
