Abstract:
AbstractThis paper intends to criticize he views on territorial spirits developed by C. Peter Wagner. In his hypothesis he argued "the key for spreading the gospel is spiritual warfare, however, there is one sub-category of spiritual warfare that has great potential to accelerate world evangelization, namely the destruction of the power of territorial spirits Wagner's view of territorial spirits, although controversial in various fields, but it’s actually accepted and practiced in certain churches in Indonesia. To examine this view, the author uses methodological library research which is classified as a type of qualitative research. This research found that Wagner was actually developing his ideas on the principle of "rejection-acceptance" which is loaded with pragmatism. Wagner's self-interest plays a very important role so that his view is his personal interpretation of the facts he presents. Wagner does not really allow facts to speak first, however, interprets facts first, so the results will definitely match his presumption. Finally, Wagner overly relates all matters to spiritual warfare, so that it causes him to tend to understand everything from the point of war. Wagner's view emphasizing only one side and ignoring the other sides finally made his theory lame.Keywords: Critical studies; views of territorial spirits; spiritual warfare; the principle of refusal acceptance; accelerated evangelism.AbstrakTulisan ini bermaksud menelaah secara kritis pandangan tentang roh-roh teritorial yang dikembangkan oleh C. Peter Wagner. Dalam hipotesanya ia mengemukakan “kunci untuk keberhasilan pengabaran injil adalah peperangan rohani, tetapi ada satu sub-kategori dari peperangan rohani yang memiliki potensi besar untuk mempercepat penginjilan dunia, yaitu penghancuran kuasa roh-roh teritorial. Pandangan ini mengundang kontroversial tersendiri: di kubu tradisonal menganggap pandangan ini tidak Alkitabiah, tetapi di kalangan tertentu gereja-gereja pentakosta Kharismatik memahaminya sebagai pengajaran yang objektif. Pandangan Wagner tentang roh-roh teritorial meskipun kontroversial, namun faktanya justru diterima dan dipraktikan di gereja-gereja tertentu di Indonesia. Untuk menelaah pandangan ini, penulis menggunakan metode penelitian kepustakaan yang secara metodologis tergolong dalam jenis penelitian kualitatif. Dari penelitian ini didapati hasil telaah yang mengemukakan bahwa Wagner sebenarnya sedang mengembangkan gagasannya di atas prinsip ”penolakan-penerimaan yang sarat dengan pragmatisme. Self interest Wagner sangat berperan sehingga pandangannya adalah penafsiran pribadinya terhadap fakta yang dipaparkannya. Wagner tidak benar-benar mengijinkan fakta berbicara terlebih dahulu, namun, menafsirkan fakta terlebih dahulu, sehingga hasilnya pasti akan cocok dengan praduganya. Terakhir, Wagner berlebihan mengkaitkan semua persoalan dengan peperangan rohani, sehingga mengakibatkan ia cenderung memahami semua hal dari sudut peperangan. This essay discusses the relationship between the Vineyard and the various other apostolic networks. By comparing the Vineyard with C. Peter Wagner and the New Apostolic Revival, I contend that the chief difference between these two movements lies in a Vineyard interest in pedagogy over a New Apostolic Revival interest in governance, and in the Vineyard’s use of the figure of John Wimber as an exemplar for practice rather than as a figure of authority.

Prinsip “risiko besar, untung besar” tidak hanya berlaku dalam dunia bisnis, namun juga dalam hal doa, demikian keyakinan C. Peter Wagner. Di sini ia sedang berbicara tentang jenis doa peperangan rohani pada tingkat “strategis” (DPRTS). Menurutnya, doa jenis ini seharusnya menjadi prioritas utama dari umat Tuhan karena doa ini memiliki efektivitas yang tinggi dalam kaitan dengan kegiatan penginjilan. Mengapa bisa demikian? Karena doa ini difokuskan untuk menggempur kekuatan yang berada di balik setiap pemberontakan terhadap Allah dan penolakan terhadap pemberitaan Injil. Di Indonesia, praktik ini mencuat ke permukaan melalui gerakan-gerakan doa yang diadakan baik dalam skup kota, daerah, maupun nasional. Umumnya gerakan-gerakan doa itu dimulai dengan pemetaan rohani untuk wilayah-wilayah yang menjadi fokus doa. Tujuan dari tahap ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi kekuatan kegelapan yang berkuasa atas daerah tersebut. Setelah selesai dengan fase ini, barulah upaya-upaya doa diarahkan untuk mememerangi kuasa-kuasa tersebut sampai pintu pemberitaan Injil terbuka. Artikel ini akan menyoroti DPRTS dari sudut pandang doa itu sendiri. Dengan kata lain, makalah ini tidak dimaksud untuk menguji secara eksegetikal ayat-ayat pendukung yang dipergunakan oleh Wagner untuk membangun argumentasi tentang roh-roh teritorial dan DPRTS. Makalah ini juga tidak akan memaparkan uraian yang ekstensif tentang ayat-ayat Alkitab yang berbicara tentang peperangan rohani. Ayat-ayat Alkitab akan dibahas secara selektif dalam rangka menempatkan konsep DPRTS dalam kerangka pemahaman doa alkitabiah dan tradisional. Untuk itu, kita akan pertama-tama melihat deskripsi singkat mengenai apa itu DPRTS, lalu dilanjutkan dengan menempatkan DPRTS di dalam peta besar pemahaman dan praktik doa, kemudian tinjauan praktik DPRTS, dan diakhiri dengan sebuah proposal doa peperangan rohani yang lebih alkitabiah.

Abstract:
While a great deal of social science literature has examined the explosion of pentecostal and charismatic Christianity in the Global South as well as conservative and anti-modern forms of resurgent Christianity in the United States, little work has been done to investigate the causal effects of the former on the latter. Drawing from existing literature, interviews, and archives, this article contributes to filling that gap by arguing that in the mid-twentieth century, evangelical missionary concerns about competition from global Pentecostalism led to an intellectual crisis at the Fuller School of World Missions; this crisis in turn influenced important Third Wave figures such as John Wimber and C. Peter Wagner and is linked to key moments and developments in their thought and pedagogy.

Abstract:
Foi registrada a predação de Carollia perspiscillata (Linnaeus, 1758) e Peropterix macrotis (Wagner, 1843) por Chrotopterus autitus (Peters, 1856) em uma caverna na morraria do Urucum em Corumbá, centro-oeste do Brasil. Os fragmentos de asas e um crânio encontrados sob o local de pouso de C. auritus junto às fezes, após comparados com material de coleção, mostraram que este morcego alimenta-se oportunamente de outras espécies de morcegos ocupantes do mesmo abrigo.

Abstract:
Aim.C. Peter Wagner is a well-known missiologist. In the late twentieth century Wagner became interested in the means by which the devil, as the enemy of God, obstructs the spread of the Gospel. Based on his reading of Daniel 10:13 [20-21], a passage referring to the prince of Persia, he concluded that the earth is ruled by Satan’s angels, whom he terms “territorial spirits.” The same chapter mentions other supernatural beings, Michael, one of the chief princes and the prince of Greece. In Wagner’s understanding Scripture reveals the existence of good and evil spirits having authority or control over specific geographical regions. Further, Wagner believed he had discovered why evangelism is ineffective in some locations - territorial spirits blind the minds of the populace and need to be bound spiritually to remove hindrances to the gospel’s reception. Wagner devised a prayer methodology called Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare (SLSW), to accelerate world evangelisation by strategically targeting designated cities or locations with aggressive prayer to disarm the spiritual powers of wickedness. SLSW depends for effectiveness on the associated practice of spiritual mapping,” entailing foundational research into an area’s historical and spiritual background preceding the prayer programme. Wagner believes SLSW to be both divinely revealed and empirically verifiable. The SLSW methodology spread with startling rapidity to many sectors of Christianity. SLSW became associated with Pentecostalism, and is now mistakenly assumed to be a Pentecostal teaching. This thesis aims to show this is inaccurate. Scope. C. Peter Wagner, an Evangelical, is associated with Third Wave groups who deliberately distance themselves from the Pentecostal label. Classical Pentecostalism is differentiated historically from the later Charismatic Renewal Movement. Third Wave groups are a separate more recent spiritual movement, sometimes known as neo-charismatics. Neither Wagner’s theological nor ecclesial location is Pentecostal, but this fact has not helped negate the mistaken assumption that his teaching originated within Pentecostalism. In order to demonstrate the difference between Wagner’s demonology and that of Pentecostalism, their respective interpretive methods need to be compared. This task was approached firstly by showing what comprises a Classical Pentecostal hermeneutic. Three distinctive principles were identified for a conventional Pentecostal reading of Scripture, namely: (1) the Protestant Reformation principle of Sola Scriptura, (2) a pneumatic approach to interpreting Scripture and (3) biblical revelation, not self-revelation, in the community of faith. In the past, Pentecostals depended on academic writings stemming from within Evangelicalism. This was a dependence of convenience, since historically Pentecostalism had no systematic theology, nor until comparatively recently a critically active academia. The disadvantage of this borrowing has been that Pentecostals have been obliged to filter out anti-Pentecostal bias evident in much Evangelical literature. The text Daniel 10:13 was then exegeted using these principles. This narrow focus is based on Wagner’s use of this text as the foundation of his demonology. Using a combined theological and literary approach, stances on reading the book of Daniel in general and Daniel 10:13 in particular were discussed. The relaxation of tensions between the factions which divided biblical scholarship for much of the twentieth century has allowed some cross-fertilization of ideas and methods, without reducing the ideological chasm separating the camps. The history of the text was recognised but meaning was sought more particularly from the form of the extant text. The results were tested against the principles of Pentecostal hermeneutics. Finally, Wagner’s writings on SLSW were appraised. His hermeneutical method was compared with the Pentecostal hermeneutical principles, the Pentecostal reading prepared from the exegesis, and the demonology of two Classical Pentecostal writers. Discussion of SLSW was confined to Wagner as the initiator of the concept. Wagner’s specific contribution has been in relating a hypothetical demonic hierarchy according to their perceived function (not simply the degree of power they may possess). He is well aware that his theory stands or falls on the issue of whether demonic spirits can legitimately be seen as occupying territories. Conclusions. Whilst some aspects of Wagner’s demonology and hermeneutic are held in common with that of Pentecostalism, the mistaken identification of SLSW as Pentecostal has led to confusion. Notwithstanding Wagner’s high view of Scripture and enthusiasm for evangelism, the hermeneutic employed in his interpretation of Dan 10:13 is not consistent with that of Classical Pentecostalism. The conclusion reached was that C. Peter Wagner’s teaching on SLSW should not be labelled Pentecostal.

Abstract:
The Church Growth movement, originating with Donald McGavran in 1955 and popularised principally by C Peter Wagner since 1971, has influenced evangelical mission internationally. Though originating in the context of cross-cultural `missionary' work, it is perhaps now identified as a typically American approach, apparently relying on method and technique to accomplish its objective, which as the name implies, is the growth of the church, both locally and world-wide, since this is understood as the requirement of the `Great Commission' (Matthew 28: 18-20). The Salvation Army (founded 1865) has been in decline in Britain certainly since the Second World War, and probably since the 1930s. In 1986 the Army formally Espoused the Church Growth approach to mission. There has been little published research into the effectiveness of Church Growth methods, especially in the UK, despite voluminous outpourings of inspirational and motivational literature. Virtually the only test of the principles (Turning the Tide) was produced in 1981 by Paul Beasley-Murray and Alan Wilkinson, investigating the reliability of Wagner's` Vital Signs' in larger Baptist churches in England. This thesis follows Beasley-Murray and Wilkinson by testing the principles in the specific context of The Salvation Army in the UK. The approach adopted, a questionnaire survey with reference to statistical trends, follows the pragmatism of Church Growth itself, asking whether the approach works, rather than whether it is theologically sound, though such issues are considered where relevant. The opportunity has also been taken to consider specific Salvation Anny issues (uniform, music etc. ) and their effect on growth and decline. The work falls into four sections: - The Salvation Army; - The Church Growth Movement; - The Questionnaire Survey; - Conclusions and Recommendations.

Strategic level spiritual warfare has been an emerging trend within Evangelical missiology ever since C. Peter Wagner published his Spiritual Power and Church Growth (1986). The distinctive doctrines of Wagner’s SLSW are 1. The doctrine of territorial spirits, which entails the belief that powerful demons control specific geographical territories and its human inhabitants. Through a variety of spiritual warfare techniques such demons can be overcome. 2. The doctrine of territorial defilement. The assumption here is that a territorial spirit can only hold people in a location in bondage if it has obtained the legal right to do so because of sins and evils committed in that locality in the past. Identificational repentance on behalf of the people living in such territories removes the legal right of the territorial spirits. 3. The doctrine of Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare prayer. The underlying assumption is that territorial spirits can only be removed by means of aggressive spiritual warfare in the form of a variety of prayer and exorcism methods for dealing with territorial spirits. (4) The doctrine of territorial commitment. This doctrine justifies the exercise of spiritual power and authority by modern apostles in their communities. Wagner’s missiology has been largely shaped by the church growth movement. In his quest for better techniques to bring about mass conversions Wagner, impressed by the Latin American Pentecostal churches, embraced Pentecostalism and developed SLSW. However, a thorough biblical study demonstrates that SLSW is mostly unbiblical. A study of SLSW in Church history also demonstrates that SLSW was never accepted in orthodox Christianity. From a contextual point of view SLSW turns out to be a North American missiology with nationalist and political biases. Finally, when looking at the potential effects of a SLSW style missiology in the context of Malawi it emerges that Wagner’s SLSW is likely to reinforce rather than diminish the prevalent witchcraft fears in the Malawian society. At the same time SLSW tends to ‘demonize’ other cultures and thus hinders genuine contextualization. In the final analysis SLSW turns out not to be a commendable strategy for Christian Mission in Malawi.

This chapter examines the ways in which African elites define their relation to the Europe with which they were confronted by the settlers in both appreciative and combative terms. It considers how scholars might use the idea of temporality — identified by both C. A. Bayly and Peter Wagner as being central to a subject's experience of modernity — to engage critically in debates about what Shmuel Eisenstadt has called ‘multiple modernities’ and Dilip Gaonkar has referred to as ‘alternative modernities’. Drawing on a specific historical case, involving a group of Christianised African elites in colonial South Africa from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, the chapter demonstrates the importance of temporality as a dimension of what it meant to be modern.
