Abstract:
Twelve morphogroups were defined on the basis of test shape and nature of test coiling as a result of the investigation of the Paleocene benthic foraminifera from the coastal part of East Stara Planina. The morphogroups are rounded trochospiral (RT), plano-convex trochospiral (PT), biconvex trochospiral (BT), milioline (M), rounded planispiral (RP), lenticular (L), flattened ovoid (FO), tapered and cylindrical (T/C), spherical (S), flattened tapered (FT), tubeshaped (T), streptospiral and heteromorphous (S/H). The previously described Byala-type and Flysh-type assemblages differ from each other by the predominant test morphology. There is no strongly dominating morphogroup in the Byala-type, while the Flysh-type is strongly dominated by two morphogroups. Both Byala-type and Flysh-type are dominated by morphogroups typical for deep sea conditions.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Genes involved in allose utilization of Escherichia coli K-12 are organized in at least two operons, alsRBACE and alsI, located next to each other on the chromosome but divergently transcribed. Mutants defective inalsI (allose 6-phosphate isomerase gene) andalsE (allulose 6-phosphate epimerase gene) were Als−. Transcription of the two allose operons, measured as β-galactosidase activity specified byalsI-lacZ + oralsE-lacZ + operon fusions, was induced by allose. Ribose also caused derepression of expression of the regulon under conditions in which ribose phosphate catabolism was impaired.

Abstract:
The study is based оn fossil material from four K/T bоundаrу sесtiоns nеаr the tоwn of Byala, Vаrnа District. The есhinоids form аn еssеntiаl part of the fossil mасrоfаunа at these outcrops. The рrеsеnсе of аmmоnitеs, inосеrаmids and nannoplankton is а good basis for precising of their stratigraphical range. The collection consists of 305 specimens, rерresentatives of 23 species from 5 families. The composition and distribution of the irregular echinoids from uninterrupted кrr sections show а gradual decrease in species variety at the end of the Late Maastrichtian. We should note the extinction of the genera Stegaster, Sеиnаstеr, Lampadaster and Cardiaster. А complete change of the echinoid species is observed at the boundary without evidence of mass mortality. The surviving genеrа аrе Coraster, Echinocorys and Galeaster. The new elements in post-maastrichtian fauna in these sections аrе representatives of the genera Ornithaster, Homoeaster, Cyclaster. There is а blооm in development of these Paleocene species, but all of them have ancestors in Maastrichtian. The K/T boundary is distinct only оn species and generic level. The echinoid communities from Byala аrе typical for the Thetyan basin.

Abstract:
The Oligocene Krumovgrad alkaline basalts and lamprophyre (KABL) intruded into the Kesebir-Kardamos and Byala Reka metamorphic domes carry various mantle and crustal xenoliths. This study presents the results from petrological and geochronological investigations of one granitic xenolith entrained in an alkaline (camptonite) dyke intruded into the Byala Reka dome, close to the village of Gorni Yurutsi (SE Bulgaria). The studied xenolith is granite formed at an estimated depth of 6–9 km. During the transport to the surface, it records some host-melt interaction with the penetrating melt, reflected mainly in the reaction with the biotite. In situ U/Pb dating of four zircons and one monazite from the xenolith yield different and slightly discordant to nearly concordant ages. One zircon reveals Ediacaran (606±19 Ma) 206Pb/238U age of the core and Permian (277±16 Ma) of the rim (all error uncertainties are 2σ). Two zircons at three analytical points overlap in their error uncertainties at 198±10 Ma and 207±8 Ma, and one zircon rim yields a concordant Jurassic age of 157±10 Ma. The age of this zircon should reflect the age of the crystallization of the granitic xenolith, whereas the older zircons are inherited and are typical for the metamorphic and magmatic rocks in the Rhodope Massif. The monazite crystal yields two almost concordant Chattian ages of 28.8±1.3 Ma and 27.6±1.8 Ma. They coincide with previous K/Ar dating of the alkaline basalts, thus confirming their Oligocene (Chattian) age.

Abstract:
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is ideal for applying precise and conformal coatings over nanoporous materials. We have recently usedALDto coat two nanoporous solids: anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and silica aerogels.AAOpossesses hexagonally ordered pores with diametersd∼40nm and pore lengthL∼70microns. TheAAOmembranes were coated byALDto fabricate catalytic membranes that demonstrate remarkable selectivity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexane. AdditionalAAOmembranes coated withALDPd films show promise as hydrogen sensors. Silica aerogels have the lowest density and highest surface area of any solid material. Consequently, these materials serve as an excellent substrate to fabricate novel catalytic materials and gas sensors byALD.

Abstract:
Elemental composition of two groups of 12 clay samples, at and above the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary at Byala (Black Sea shore, Eastern Bulgaria), is studied by Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) in order to trace impact events. Iridium anomaly and a certain set of trace elements, together with biostratigraphic data, point to two possible impact events recorded: the first one (at the K/Pg boundary), linked to the giant Chicxulub impact in Mexico; and a second one (above the K/Pg boundary), possibly linked to the later in age, smaller and closer in distance, Boltysh impact in Ukraine.

Abstract:
This study is based on primary lithological data from 96 boreholes and lithostratigraphic interpretation of 17 seismic profiles from the onshore part of the Dolna Kamchiya Basin, which belongs to the onshore sector of the Moesian Platform and comprises the south-easternmost part of the Southern platform zone. Nine formal Paleogene lithostratigraphic units were recognized (the Byala, Komarevo, Dvoynitsa, Beloslav, Dikilitash, Aladan, Avren formations, the Dolni Chiflik Member of the Avren Formation, and the Ruslar Formation). For visualization of their spatial relationships and revealing the deep structure of the basin, a 3D lithological model was created. In addition, new data on the lithology, thicknesses and ages of the units were provided.
