Abstract:
In the present work further modifications are implemented to an existing test setup for the evaluation of the wear of cemented carbide drill buttons in rock drilling applications. The test setup has been evaluated in previous diploma works, which has shown that the test successfully mimics the wear seen in rock drilling applications. The new modifications include friction and normal force measurements together with the collection of rock debris. This has been made possible by redesigning the sample holder and by manufacturing equipment making rock debris collection possible. The new modifications to the test setup were evaluated by comparing the wear of three different cemented carbide grades tested against sandstone and granite with two different loads. The data collected from the new modifications were found to be robust with lower than expected spread of data. The coefficient of friction when testing against sandstone was higher than when testing against granite. More adhered material was observed on the wear surface when testing against granite than against sandstone. Load dependence on the wear of the cemented carbide buttons is only seen for the softer cemented carbide grades when testing against sandstone. The wear of the buttons indicates a high dependence on the hardness of the different grades as shouldbe expected. This diploma work has been performed for Sandvik Mining, Rock Tools,a world leading supplier of rock drill equipment.

Abstract:

When developing the driver interface in their trucks, Scania is highly concerned with creating a certain feeling. When pressing a push-button this Scania feeling shall be perceived. It is not obvious what the Scania feeling really is and there is no predefined method to create it. This Master Thesis takes aim at providing the means to improve the process of creating this feeling.

First, the Scania feeling was studied via the results of an already made survey at Scania. This survey focused on subjective properties of push-buttons, rotary knobs and levers and related the properties to whether these objects had a Scania feeling or not. This existing data was analyzed statistically. The main task of this Master Thesis, however, was to create an environment where the feeling of a push-button could be tried out and described. This environment was created with a tool from Reachin Technologies AB. The environment is a virtual representation of a push-button module, created with computer haptics and graphics. The environment lets the user interact with a three dimensional view collocated with a force feedback device. The force feedback device lets the user feel what is seen through a pen like interface. The “tip” of the pen is used to touch what is seen in the 3D view. The virtual push-buttons was built from blueprints of real push-buttons to be able to evaluate to what extent the virtual buttons resembled the real ones.

The statistical analysis made in this project does not support the notion of describing the Scania feeling with a set of subjective values. The virtual environment created proved to be very life like. The real push-button feeling could be recreated with high precision. When evaluated, the majority of test persons argued that it could be used in the development process.

Googer, Georgia. "The Radical Ekphrasis Of Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2018. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/889.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a reading of Gertrude Stein’s 1914 prose poetry collection, Tender Buttons, as a radical experiment in ekphrasis. A project that began with an examination of the avant-garde imagism movement in the early twentieth century, this thesis notes how Stein’s work differs from her imagist contemporaries through an exploration of material spaces and objects as immersive sensory experiences. This thesis draws on late twentieth century attempts to understand and define ekphrastic poetry before turning to Tender Buttons. Although the question of categorizing Tender Buttons has been an issue since its original publications, few have noted its essentially ekphrastic nature. Doing so, I argue ekphrasis helps to account for the way Stein’s poetry interacts with spatiality and temporality, illustrates sensory experiences, and plays with the multiplicity of language while also provoking readers to re-interpret their own experiences. My work with Tender Buttons seeks to extend the theoretical conversation. Applying a categorical term like ekphrasis to Stein’s work forces readers to interact with the descriptions in the text, in conjunction with their own experiences, in a way that elevates the objects rendered to pieces of art. Via an analysis of spatiality/temporality, invocations of the senses, and the plurality of diction in every poem, the reader can experience Tender Buttons through a unique and individualized approach that openly invites her to ask questions about Stein’s world and her own material surrounds. Essentially, I offer a reading of Tender Buttons as a collection that fastens materiality with language, asking anyone who interacts with the text to ask questions about the boundaries between verbal and visual material.

Abstract:
This thesis presents two applications of binary tries. Trie structures are used as indexes to store and query spatial data on secondary storage. This thesis deals with point and segment data. Maps are treated as a series of segments in the plane, and links between these maps and other maps or pictures are treated as point data.
Maps are stored as Zoom tries on secondary storage. Zoom tries allow efficient accesses to the maps at different levels of resolution. They also allow efficient implementations of range queries. Furthermore, this trie organization provides good data compression. We implement four operations on maps to allow user interaction.
We define a link between a map and another map or picture, by a position in the plane, a resolution level and a pointer to a target document. These links are represented as buttons on the maps where they are defined. Zoom tries are used to store and index the position and resolution parts of the link information. The choice of zoom tries as the data structure to store the position information of the links allows the definition of operations on the buttons that integrate naturally with those defined on maps. The contribution of this thesis is the representation of buttons as a zoom trie structure.

Melin, Ruben. "Pushing buttons: an ethnographic interview study on toxicity in online gaming cultures." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Centrum för genusvetenskap, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-444218.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to research toxicity through how it was understood, experienced, and described by game enthusiasts. The toxicity described is further explored through theories of cultural and symbolic domination and through feminist game studies and the lens of masculinity theory. I have thus looked at the cultural fields of online gaming as social domains sometimes structured by hierarchies, where subjects may be positioned in relation to one another by virtue of norms, their identities, habitus, symbolic capital and through (more or less symbolic) violence.  The study is based on semi-structured interviews with six gaming enthusiasts who are about twenty to forty years old, five identifying as men and one identifying as a woman. Interpretation has been conducted through a thematic and discourse analytically inspired method, and through the theoretical framework primarily consisting of Bourdieu´s (developed) theoretical concepts of fields, capital, habitus and symbolic violence, combined with Iris Marion Young’s theory of cultural dominance and social constructionist theories on masculinity. The study shows how subjects may make sense of online gaming as a social arena often associated to online violence and discrimination, and how this can be further analysed from a gender studies perspective.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In June 2009 I conducted a study of the habitat associated with Broadleaf Barbara's Buttons (Marshallia trinervia) along Bird's Creek in Vernon Parish, LA. Twenty two plots were sampled for all vascular plants. Of these, 17 samples were from the area where M. trinervia was present and 5 samples were from the area where M. trinervia was absent. From each sampling plot a soil sample was collected and analyzed. There were significant differences in the species richness of all plant groups (p=0.0075), herbaceous plants (p=0.056), and woody vines (p=0.083) between the two locations. The soil texture was also significantly different in the percentage of sand (p=0.021), silt (p=0.029), and clay (p=0.089) between the study locations. The study found that the samples associated with M. trinervia were higher in species richness for all plant groups and the soils from these locations had a higher mean percentage of silt and clay particles.

Abstract:
In this thesis, drill bit buttons with cobalt, nickel and iron binders in different compositions have been tested against granite and sandstone and the wear and friction have been measured. Furthermore, the wear and degradation of the buttons have been categorized. Buttons with cobalt binder were tested against granite and sandstone and buttons with alternative binders (Ni, Fe, Co) were tested against granite. Cobalt buttons were used as a reference and the wear and friction of the alternative binders was compared to the reference. The amount of worn rock was also measured. Furthermore, post treated drill bit buttons with a composition of Fe-Ni-Co were compared to buttons with the same composition that had not been post treated The results show that buttons with an alternative composition of Fe-Co-Ni and Fe- Ni wears less than the cobalt reference. The post treatment process does not decrease the wear of the drill bit but lowers the deviation from the mean wear. The amount of worn rock does not differ between the samples except for between the post treated and not post treated buttons with a composition of Fe-Ni-Co. The post treated buttons produces more rock debris than the not post treated. No apparent difference could be seen on the surface of the tested buttons after the test. However, composition specific cracks could be found underneath the surface of the samples. EDS-analysis showed signals of oxygen inside of all of the investigated cracks. For some compositions at depths of 20 micrometers. The curves of friction shows similar appearance but the values of the coefficient of friction differs. No apparent correlation was found between the wear and friction of the samples. Furthermore, no apparent correlation was found between the hardness and the wear of the buttons.

Abstract:
This study looks at the price mechanism of the digital quasi-currency bitcoin. Through statistical analysis of secondary data a probable significant results regarding correlation and regression between price and different independent variables have been established. The final analysis is pointing towards network effects being a part of the determinants for the crypto-currency’s price. Complimentary to the quantitative study explained above, an implementation of hermeneutic analysis based on secondary theoretical sources, journalistic opinion and a professional qualified judgment has aided the author and study in conceptual understanding. This interpretation has semantic character, and takes a Socratic kickoff regarding the nature of bitcoin as a financial instrument. The analysis runs back and forth throughout the course of the study and finally intertwines with qualitative results in the discussion. It is the author’s impression that a significant dimorphism surrounds bitcoin, calling for a conceptual differentiation leading to practical rethinking. The study takes the shape of a case-study conducted over four months. The author’s location during the process of writing was Stockholm Sweden, but the gathered data is of transnational character.

Abstract:
The ancient Maya adorned themselves with ornamental objects. This study investigates a type of polishing tool used by the ancient Maya to manufacture certain types of ornaments. Five stone polishing tools used by the ancient Maya are presented and analyzed. Relevant artifact forms are examined to establish which types of artifacts were being polished with these tools. An extensive discussion of the archaeological record and artistic representations of miniature earflares and buttons, which were polished with many of these stone polishing tools, is also included because the terminology used to refer to these objects has varied throughout the academic literature and is in need of clarification.

Abstract:
This study investigates the supply, distribution and use of haberdashery wares in England in the late sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with especial reference to the paired counties of Cumbria and Lancashire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire, Hampshire and West Sussex. A brief comparison is also made with London. Through examination of documentary evidence and extant examples, it aims to set the provision and use of haberdashery for dress into the context of the Early Modern period, and challenges widely held assumptions concerning the availability of wares through the country. The purpose of the argument is firstly to demonstrate that haberdashery, being both a necessity and a luxury, was an important, and historically traceable, part of traded goods in the early modern period, and secondly, with particular reference to the response of retailers to changing needs and demands, to show that the widescale availability of haberdashery for use in dress made it significant in the expression of personal identity and appearance for individuals of all social strata, while its manufacture and distribution provided employment for considerable numbers of people.

Abstract:
Last summer, when I began thinking about my thesis, I tried to look back on my earlier work with a more critical eye. I noticed that my focus had largely been on trying to find my own idiom, and improving my construction skills. In the middle of my education I discovered the freedom in draping, and I challenged myself by putting the pen aside and instead make three-dimensional sketches. Looking back, I believe that I succeeded in producing the organic expression I had envisioned. I had still to explore materials more deeply, though, and therefore I made a summer course with exclusive focus on materials. These were the first steps towards beginning my thesis. There were a lot of things I wanted to explore in my thesis, and many techniques I wanted to try. I wanted to believe in myself and my strong sides, but also dare to explore completely new things and go one step further than before, without fear- ing failure. Being very comfortable with construction and cutting, I can quickly try my ideas to see if they work out or not. My sketching is uncontrolled, coarse and pretty abstract, it is through sketching my ideas evolve. I am fast when I make my sketches, be it by pen or three-dimensionally, but I work much more slowly towards the end when it’s time to work on the details, where I am meticulous.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of driving, in order to compensate the loss of haptic information caused by the substitution of conventional mechanical interfaces of touch screens, we proposed to study the addition of vibrotactile feedback. This would be used as a feedback control between the system and the user. The first objective of this work was to provide a better understanding of the factors and physical parameters influencing the perception and evaluation of these short vibrotactile signals in order to optimize their creation. The data collected were both subjective (Likert scales) and objective (reaction time, error rate). A link between the user’s preferences and existing mechanical buttons was considered. The second objective was to study multimodal signals (audio-haptic or visuo-haptic) in order to change haptic perception. For this, we used a short term priming paradigm divised in two phases : a learning phase and a priming phase. The priming phase is characterized by non-explicit association between a haptic component (a vibration) simultaneously with another sensorial component (either a sound, or a moving or static image). The priming phase is characterized by the presentation of one haptic component (prime) followed a target component (sound or visual). We observed that components perceptually absent, but previously associated, could change perceptual processing of target components. These types of results have allowed us to provide new arguments for common mechanisms underlying perception and memory through a modality rarely studied in scientific literature. A better understanding of these links, helped us to change the user’s perception from perceptually absent components. An illusion had been created with the visual-haptic signals allowing a closer approach to the mechanical buttons

Fox, Andrew. "Pushing the button : a quantitative analysis of red button television content in the UK." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/68455/.

Full text
Abstract:
The technological, sociological and cultural position of television, as a method of delivering content, has been the subject of much academic debate in the past twenty years. Perceived threats to television have emerged through the convergence of technologies, which has enabled traditional media forms to take on the characteristics of each other. As a result there is no such thing as a dominant communications medium in the 21st Century, as shared technological characteristics mean that the user can access a multitude of content through one single device. Some believe that television is on the wane, leading to dire predictions of the ‘death’ of television. For others, if television is to survive and develop as a communications medium, it needs to take on one element of convergence by becoming more interactive. There is a substantial amount of academic work which suggests how television can achieve this and what the content provided will do. However, these are merely suggestions, as there is no research which looks at what interactive content actually is. The assumption for scholars, who believe that interactive television is a viable format, is that it is inevitable that interactivity will become an everyday element of television use. Ideas as to how this can be achieved have been put forward but have not been followed up. This research aims to fill that empirical gap and is informed not by what could be but what is. It is clear that digital television has allowed for an additional stream of information to be accessed, through the red button on the remote control. This content provides a variety of options for the viewer, however, the key question, which this research is addressing, is how much of it is interactive? Additional research is now needed to establish just how much of this content exists, what the red button allows the audience member to do and how. Therefore it is necessary to measure and quantify the amount of red button content across a sample of channels, which represent the three types of broadcasting comprising the British broadcasting landscape; public service (the BBC), commercial (ITV) and subscription (Sky).

Abstract:
Abstract This material culture study focuses on the residents of Oulu via small clothing-related items (buttons, buckles, pins). The source material is comprised of not only excavation material, but also of the probate inventories of the townsfolk. Gender archaeology, previously unused in Finnish urban archaeology, is used as the theoretical framework. This study discusses early modern clothing from the perspective of identity with particular emphasis on gender and class; why did townsfolk dress as they did in the 18th century Oulu? Although clothing was mainly tied to class and gender in early modern Oulu, on a personal level there was room for negotiation and transgression. Classes were an integral part of society in the 18th century, and the abolishment of the class system was still ahead. However, the signs of the formation of the middle class and the deterioration of the strict class boundaries are visible in the research material. Sumptuary laws notwithstanding, identity could be expressed through clothing, in particular with small details, and clothing gave people some leeway to negotiate their position in the community

Abstract:
Traditional call button networks that control elevator systems utilize a wired connection for communication. The communication cables are run through the elevator shaft from one call button to another and finally to the controller on the roof. Installing this wired link is highly time consuming. In this thesis, we propose the design for a wireless call button network. Two important features of this wireless network design are low cost and low power consumption. Controller Area Network (CAN) is a widely used protocol for wired networks and has been proposed for use in next generation elevator control systems. A modified CAN for wireless (MCANW) protocol has been developed for the wireless call button network. The wireless link will be implemented via the use of data radios. A modified form of traditional Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation scheme for the radios is proposed. The proposed modulation scheme, like differential BPSK, can be detected non-coherently but it offers better performance than differential BPSK. Its implementation includes an innovative tracking algorithm to maintain synchronization at the receiver.

Abstract:
A disadvantage with battery powered circuits is the fact that the battery sometimes can run out of power. If a button that can generate energy by applying mechanical work to it was applied instead of batteries, is it possible to enable a transmitter to stay active long enough to transmit data which can later by received and decoded? This thesis contains a study, in which how to effectively send data wirelessly between a transmitter and receiver module, without the use of any batteries or external power sources, only an energy harvesting push button is constructed and evaluated. There will also be a theoretical comparison between different transmission formats and which is more suitable for a task such as this.

Kaaresoja, Topi Johannes. "Latency guidelines for touchscreen virtual button feedback." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7075/.

Full text
Abstract:
Touchscreens are very widely used, especially in mobile phones. They feature many interaction methods, pressing a virtual button being one of the most popular ones. In addition to an inherent visual feedback, virtual button can provide audio and tactile feedback. Since mobile phones are essentially computers, the processing causes latencies in interaction. However, it has not been known, if the latency is an issue in mobile touchscreen virtual button interaction, and what the latency recommendations for visual, audio and tactile feedback are. The research in this thesis has investigated multimodal latency in mobile touchscreen virtual button interaction. For the first time, an affordable, but accurate tool was built to measure all three feedback latencies in touchscreens. For the first time, simultaneity perception of touch and feedback, as well as the effect of latency on virtual button perceived quality has been studied and thresholds found for both unimodal and bimodal feedback. The results from these studies were combined as latency guidelines for the first time. These guidelines enable interaction designers to establish requirements for mobile phone engineers to optimise the latencies on the right level. The latency measurement tool consisted of a high-speed camera, a microphone and an accelerometer for visual, audio and tactile feedback measurements. It was built with off-the-shelf components and, in addition, it was portable. Therefore, it could be copied at low cost or moved wherever needed. The tool enables touchscreen interaction designers to validate latencies in their experiments, making their results more valuable and accurate. The tool could benefit the touchscreen phone manufacturers, since it enables engineers to validate latencies during development of mobile phones. The tool has been used in mobile phone R&D within Nokia Corporation and for validation of a research device within the University of Glasgow. The guidelines established for unimodal feedback was as follows: visual feedback latency should be between 30 and 85 ms, audio between 20 and 70 ms and tactile between 5 and 50 ms. The guidelines were found to be different for bimodal feedback: visual feedback latency should be 95 and audio 70 ms when the feedback was visual-audio, visual 100 and tactile 55 ms when the feedback was visual-tactile and tactile 25 and audio 100 ms when the feedback was tactile-audio. These guidelines will help engineers and interaction designers to select and optimise latencies to be low enough, but not too low. Designers using these guidelines will make sure that most of the users will both perceive the feedback as simultaneous with their touch and experience high quality virtual buttons. The results from this thesis show that latency has a remarkable effect on touchscreen virtual buttons, and it is a key part of virtual button feedback design. The novel results enable researchers, designers and engineers to master the effect of latencies in research and development. This will lead to more accurate and reliable research results and help mobile phone manufacturers make better products.

Juncaj, Anton. "Disappearance of tachysterol in white button mushrooms." Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12128.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University
Vitamin D has proven to be an important factor in health through a plethora of studies. Tachysterol is a photoproduct of previtamin D with sun or ultraviolet radiation exposure. While vitamin D is well known for its importance in bone health, the biologic function of tachysterol is unknown. Many vertebrates and fungi can produce vitamin D from a precursor after UV irradiation or sun exposure, including white button mushrooms. This project aims to determine if tachysterol might have a biologic function in white button mushrooms by determining if the disappearance of tachysterol2 was due to some active process in live mushrooms. To provide evidence that tachysterol serves a function, tachysterol2 disappearance in white button mushrooms was monitored after 24 hours. The aim was to create conditions in a white button mushroom, including freezing and microwaving them to determine their effects on tachysterol2 disappearance at 24 hours. The idea was that freezing or microwaving the mushroom would disrupt any metabolic process in the mushroom, providing a clue as to the mechanism of tachysterol2 disappearance. The hypothesis was that freezing and microwaving the white button mushroom would cause a reduction in tachysterol2 disappearance. To evaluate this, 1) white button mushrooms were irradiated with ultraviolet radiation (UVB, 290nm-320nm), 2) an irradiated white button mushroom was frozen, and 3) an irradiated white button mushroom was microwaved. These white button mushrooms were biopsied in triplicate, extracted, and run on high-performance liquid chromatography in order to determine the concentrations of tachysterol2 in the mushrooms. A white button mushroom without UVB irradiation was biopsied in triplicate and extracted to confirm that the store-bought mushrooms did not contain tachysterol2. A tachysterol2 standard was incubated in organic solvent to determine if tachysterol2 was stable. The results showed statistically significant decrease in tachysterol2 for the irradiated mushroom, the frozen irradiated mushroom, the microwaved mushroom 24 hours after irradiation, compared to the standard tachysterol2 in organic solvent. The decrease in tachysterol2 in the microwaved mushroom was 65% in 24 hours, which was not significantly less than in the irradiated mushroom and the frozen irradiated mushroom (p= 0.10 and 0.22, respectively). The decrease in tachysterol2 for the frozen mushroom was 93%, which was not significantly less than the irradiated mushroom (p = 0.21). These findings suggest that microwaving a mushroom at 5mW and 60 seconds and freezing a mushroom does not significantly interfere with metabolic processes that may involve tachysterol2, although microwaving a mushroom trended towards less of a decrease in the tachysterol concentration.

Abstract:
The demand for resources to product development has become an important research area in the early 21st century Waste and the disposal of resources without any concern for the environment, was a commonplace attitude, and without great importance for society global. However, the high cost for the extraction of raw materials from the environment, and the reduction of resources on the planet, made the industry resort to reuse of materials throughout the product development chain and the conscious use of each element. From the integration of knowledge from engineering, we identified the need to understand the influences of ecoinovadoras approaches in product development for the industry. So this thesis has the objective to propose strategies for product development based on eco-innovation as a contribution to improving the sustainability of organizations. The specific objectives are: (i) define the concept of eco-innovation through research and evaluate Brazilian examples according to their definition; (ii) propose the creation of a ecoinovador product through the application of the concepts of eco-efficiency and ZERI philosophy; (iii) create a ecoinovadora solution for the production of products developed through the cradle-to-cradle design as an alternative to the reduction of solid waste; (iv) develop and analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of a ecoinovador composite made from rice husks and MDF waste for absorbers of electromagnetic radiation applications; (v) create a pyramidal absorber of electromagnetic radiation based on a composite ecoinovador. To achieve the objectives of this thesis were used, methodologies and knowledge to generate new products based on resources obtained through the reuse of waste. Also were used strategies that minimize the environmental impacts of these new products designed on the concept of eco-innovation. Experimental tests were performed with the ecoinovadores products developed through these approaches. The results involved obtaining scientific knowledge about ecoinovadores product development theme for improving the sustainability of organizations, as well as prototypes, presented as five scientific studies.

Abstract:
Several modern multi-core architectures support the dynamic control of the CPU's clock rate, allowing processor cores to temporarily operate at speeds exceeding the operational base frequency. Conversely, cores can operate at a lower speed or be disabled altogether to save power. Such facilities are notably provided by Intel's Turbo Boost and AMD's Turbo CORE technologies. Frequency control is typically driven by the operating system which requests changes to the performance state of the processor based on the current load of the system. In this paper, we investigate the use of dynamic frequency scaling from user space to speed up multi-threaded applications that must occasionally execute time-critical tasks or to solve problems that have heterogeneous computing requirements. We propose a general-purpose library that allows selective control of the frequency of the cores - subject to the limitations of the target architecture. We analyze the performance trade-offs and illustrate its benefits using several benchmarks and real-world workloads when temporarily boosting selected cores executing time-critical operations. While our study primarily focuses on AMD's architecture, we also provide a comparative evaluation of the features, limitations, and runtime overheads of both Turbo Boost and Turbo CORE technologies. Our results show that we can successful exploit these new hardware facilities to accelerate the execution of key sections of code (critical paths) improving overall performance of some multi-threaded applications. Unlike prior research, we focus on performance instead of power conservation. Our results further can give guidelines for the design of hardware power management facilities and the operating system interfaces to those facilities.

Abstract:
Webpage design is an important factor in the capturing of new donor populations and increasing charitable giving. Charities often use emotional appeals when soliciting donations but little is known about the effects of embedding different verbal triggers directly into donation buttons. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of three emotional triggers on donor compliance, donation amount and trust in the charity. A between-groups experimental design was used to test six hypotheses regarding the impact of social approval, empowerment, and guilt on donor compliance, donation amount and trust in the charity. Eighty students completed the research protocol using a simulated online donating platform. The hypotheses were not supported and the implications of the findings are discussed within the context of the strengths and limitations of the research design.

Aman, Amjad. "Numerical Simulation of Electrolyte-Supported Planar Button Solid Oxide Fuel Cell." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5101.

Full text
Abstract:
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells are fuel cells that operate at high temperatures usually in the range of 600oC to 1000oC and employ solid ceramics as the electrolyte. In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells oxygen ions (O2-) are the ionic charge carriers. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells are known for their higher electrical efficiency of about 50-60% [1] compared to other types of fuel cells and are considered very suitable in stationary power generation applications. It is very important to study the effects of different parameters on the performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and for this purpose the experimental or numerical simulation method can be adopted as the research method of choice. Numerical simulation involves constructing a mathematical model of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and use of specifically designed software programs that allows the user to manipulate the model to evaluate the system performance under various configurations and in real time. A model is only usable when it is validated with experimental results. Once it is validated, numerical simulation can give accurate, consistent and efficient results. Modeling allows testing and development of new materials, fuels, geometries, operating conditions without disrupting the existing system configuration. In addition, it is possible to measure internal variables which are experimentally difficult or impossible to measure and study the effects of different operating parameters on power generated, efficiency, current density, maximum temperatures reached, stresses caused by temperature gradients and effects of thermal expansion for electrolytes, electrodes and interconnects. Since Solid Oxide Fuel Cell simulation involves a large number of parameters and complicated equations, mostly Partial Differential Equations, the situation calls for a sophisticated simulation technique and hence a Finite Element Method (FEM) multiphysics approach will be employed. This can provide three-dimensional localized information inside the fuel cell. For this thesis, COMSOL Multiphysics version 4.2a will be used for simulation purposes because it has a Batteries & Fuel Cells module, the ability to incorporate custom Partial Differential Equations and the ability to integrate with and utilize the capabilities of other tools like MATLAB, Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks. Fuel Cells can be modeled at the system or stack or cell or the electrode level. This thesis will study Solid Oxide Fuel Cell modeling at the cell level. Once the model can be validated against experimental data for the cell level, then modeling at higher levels can be accomplished in the future. Here the research focus is on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells that use hydrogen as the fuel. The study focuses on solid oxide fuel cells that use 3-layered, 4-layered and 6-layered electrolytes using pure YSZ or pure SCSZ or a combination of layers of YSZ and SCSZ. A major part of this research will be to compare SOFC performance of the different configurations of these electrolytes. The cathode and anode material used are (La0.6Sr0.4)0.95-0.99Co0.2Fe0.8O3 and Ni-YSZ respectively.

Abstract:
In The Pearl Button, Patricio Guzman explores the role water played in shaping how the Selk’nam inhabited the coasts of the Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia through “cosmovisions,’ sequences that extend beyond human perception, even as they link the habitation of indigenous peoples to subsequent colonial and political projects. Guzman’s “cosmovisual aesthetic” warrants dissection in the form of a video essay because of its complicated interplay between editing and shot distance, which establishes a critical bioregionalism that acknowledges the unique qualities of place, here the Tierra del Fuego, as well as the forces of globalization that threaten it. Guzman’s cosmovisual aesthetic ranges from extreme close-ups to reveal minute details in objects to aerial shots that articulate the shapes of coasts and even to telescopic shots depicting planets and nebulae. He works with archival photography and the superimposition of images/sounds in order to create a pluriverse of peoples and environments, which moves beyond human audiovisual and temporal perception. In doing so, The Pearl Button links the ways in which the Selk’nam inhabited Chile, depending on its waters, to the ocean as the source of the colonial project of Spain and site of political murders under the later dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Guzman’s cinematic elaboration of Indigenous worldviews resonates with contemporary Chilean philosophers Humberto Maturana, Francisco Varela, and Ricardo Rozzi. From cybernetics to ecological philosophy, this video essay weaves the insights of these Chilean philosophers with Guzman’s cosomovisions in order to highlight the complex ecological insights at the intersection of Indigenous thought and film form. In particular, it extends Rozzi’s practical model of Field Environmental Philosophy to communicating ecological philosophy through media.

Abstract:
Fabricating and 3D printing gamepads is challenging not only in terms of appearance of them but also in terms of their physical validity and user experience that they might provide. This thesis addresses the issue of providing users the ability to hold in their hand a fabricated gamepad, which is an object similar to that the virtual character keeps in his/her hand inside the virtual world. Thus, this thesis presents a basic approach for converting 3D objects found in a variety of online datasets to functional gamepads by retargeting the structure of the gamepad’s buttons to the 3D model. The fabricated gamepads can then be used by gamers to enjoy their favorite game. The authors assumed that gamepads that have a relationship with the game enhance the game experience of users. This assumption is mainly based on a variety of previous work that investigates the use of “natural” interfaces. Therefore, in addition to the proposed approach, a two-part user study was also conducted to firstly understand whether the fabricated gamepads can be considered as valid physical objects and also to understand the way that participants experienced a game. First, the results indicated that the fabricated gamepads can be considered as valid physical objects and secondly, that they enhance the gaming experience of the users.

Abstract:
A wearable computer interface with split button configuration was constructed using Arduino Lilypad components on the front of a vest with the goal of assessing its usability in an activity involving at least one hand. A sample of twelve men and eight women ages 18 to 62 participated in a usability study of the vest. The activity chosen for this study was a typing test during which users would control a media player remotely with the vest. The usability measures included ease of use, performance of the interface as determined by accuracy rates and time to task completion for both button pressing and the typing test, and comfort. Results indicate the participants found the vest easy to learn and use with no significant effect on the accuracy of the typing activity, but they often needed visual cues to locate the controls. Based on these findings, we offer suggestions for improving the design of the interface and future work we want to pursue after the modifications.

Lighted push button switches and indicators serve many purposes in cockpits, shipboard applications and military ground vehicles. The quality of lighting produced by switches is vital to operators' understanding of the information displayed. Utilizing LED technology in lighted switches has challenges that can adversely affect lighting quality. Incomplete data exists to educate consumers about potential differences in LED switch performance between different manufacturers. LED switches from four different manufacturers were tested for six attributes of lighting quality: average luminance and power consumption at full voltage, sunlight readable contrast, luminance contrast under ambient sunlight, legend uniformity, and dual-color uniformity. Three of the four manufacturers have not developed LED push button switches that meet lighting quality standards established with incandescent technology.

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, has been long known to be crucial for bone health and more recently it has been discovered to reduce the risk for cancer and several chronic diseases. Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiency affects millions of people worldwide. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation and sensible sun exposure have become more important than ever. Mushrooms are a well-known source of supplementation because of their high concentration of vitamin D's precursor, ergosterol. Irradiation of mushrooms has become popular with the mushroom industry in order to fortify their products with vitamin D. Limited research has been conducted in the kinetics of previtamin D2's conversion to vitamin D2. The goal of this research is to help identify the kinetics of the conversion of previtamin D2 to vitamin D2 in irradiated white button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus). Mushrooms and ampoules containing ergosterol were irradiated with a RC-500B Pulsed UV Curing System (Xenon Corporation, Woburn, MA) and extracted with 100% methanol. Samples were dried under an N2 stream, and prepared for HPLC. A Zorbax RX-SIL column, and CN column, were used to separate the photobyproducts of previtamin 02, lumisterol, tachysterol and vitamin D2. Photoproducts of previtamin D2 were exposed to room temperature (25° C) and studied with respect to time. A 24 hour time course was conducted, and concluded there to be a statistically significant difference (P less than 0.001) in the conversion of previtamin D2 to vitamin D2 in mushrooms and ampoules at 0 hours and between 6 and 24 hours.
