Abstract:
Abstract We consider nonsymmetric hermitian complex Hadamard matrices belonging to the Bose-Mesner algebra of commutative nonsymmetric association schemes. First, we give a characterization of the eigenmatrix of a commutative nonsymmetric association scheme of class 3 whose Bose-Mesner algebra contains a nonsymmetric hermitian complex Hadamard matrix, and show that such a complex Hadamard matrix is necessarily a Butson-type complex Hadamard matrix whose entries are 4-th roots of unity. We also give nonsymmetric association schemes X of class 6 on Galois rings of characteristic 4, and classify hermitian complex Hadamard matrices belonging to the Bose-Mesner algebra of X. It is shown that such a matrix is again necessarily a Butson-type complex Hadamard matrix whose entries are 4-th roots of unity.

Abstract:
We study the Plotkin bound for codes over a finite Frobenius ring R equipped with the homogeneous weight. We show that for codes meeting the Plotkin bound, the distribution on R induced by projection onto a coordinate has an interesting property. We present several constructions of codes meeting the Plotkin bound and of Plotkin-optimal codes. We also investigate the relationship between Butson–Hadamard matrices and codes over R meeting the Plotkin bound.

Abstract:
The main result of this paper is a construction for complex Hadamard matrices: for [Formula: see text] any prime power and [Formula: see text] the size of a real Hadamard matrix, this construction yields a family of complex Hadamard matrices of order [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] parameters, including Butson-type matrices of even type [Formula: see text] a divisor of [Formula: see text]. Only a few lowdimensional examples and the real Hadamard matrices obtained by this construction are already known. Also a small extension of Diţa’s construction (cf. Lemma 1) is given.

Abstract:
To determine the impact of sanctions on the nutritional status of Iraqi children aged < 6 years, a random sample of 700 patients [age range: 0-6 years] from the Saddam Paediatric Hospital, Diyala Province, Iraq were examined ophthalmologically for evidence of xerophthalmia. Data on the history of infection, feeding and night blindness were also collected. The prevalence of xerophthalmia was 29%, mostly among children aged 1-3 years. Xerophthalmia was significantly inversely associated with breastfeeding and highly associated with common childhood infections such as measles, diarrhoea and respiratory tract infection. Xerophthalmia is a common problem among sick Iraqi children. Efforts to identify, evaluate and monitor vitamin A deficiency and to advocate and plan its eradication should be implemented.

Abstract:
Forty-seven patients were investigated for early or late postoperative infections of orthopaedic implants and/or bone. A total of 88 isolates were recovered [64 aerobes and 24 anaerobes]. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis were the most common causative agents. Anaerobic bacteria were isolated from 16 [34%] patients; 50% of patients with late-onset infection and 10.5% with early-onset infection. In 6 [12.8%] patients, infection was with anaerobic organisms alone. All these patients had retained an extramedullary internal fixation device. Anaerobic microorganisms appear to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of late-onset postoperative infection, especially where there is an extramedullary internal fixation device.

A cross-sectional study was conducted of 404 diabetic patients attending King Abdulaziz University Hospital medical clinic from June 1998 to January 2000 in order to determine their rates of reaching target levels for blood glucose, blood pressure, serum lipids and body mass index. Greatest difficulty was found in reaching target levels for low-density lipoprotein and glycated haemoglobin. Target levels for blood pressure were harder to achieve for Saudis than non-Saudis. Significantly fewer females reached target levels for blood glucose, body mass index, low-density lipoprotein or all targets than males [both Saudi and non-Saudi]. Efforts are needed to improve compliance to diet and drug regimens and to identify and treat risk factors in each patient.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theme of free choices and their relation to the stated consequences embodied in the two short stories, one by W.W. Jacobs entitled The Monkey’s Paw and another one by Richard Matheson entitled Button, Button. The analysis focuses on four aspects; namely, the situational triggers of the free choices, the gripping conflicts in the free choices, the ethical consequences, and the purpose of the twisted endings. The concepts borrowed to support the analysis are the concepts concerning situational choices, morality types, and ethical consequences. The research methods applied in the analysis are the combination of the library research, the textual method enriched with the relevant contexts in order to completely dig out the proposed problems The results of the discussion show that every free choice taken under whatever reason will lead to the stated consequence whether it is unbelievable or impossible. The superstitious atmosphere in The Monkey’s Paw and the mysterious atmosphere in the Button, Button, all lead to the inevitability to avoid the temptation to choose resulting in the disastrous consequences.

After determining the baseline serum vitamin A status of 80 volunteers, 20 pairs were matched for serum vitamin A level, body mass index, age, sex and socioeconomic status. One person from each pair was randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. The experimental group received vitamin A and antirabies vaccine. Controls received only the vaccine. The experimental group had significantly greater [2.1 times] serum antirabies titre than controls. This finding is an important step towards improving the economy of dosage of antirabies vaccines.

Abstract:
Jemmy Button was an Indian of Tierra del Fuego who inadvertently inspired four generations of nineteenth-century English missionaries to risk their earthly lives to save his eternal soul. These earnest evangelicals made five expeditions to Jemmy's South American homeland to make Christians of him and his countrymen. One of these ventures was an embarrassing fiasco, another ended in death by starvation, and a third led to a treacherous massacre. This young Indian's unintended influence also touched evolutionary thought. Jemmy Button was a friend and companion to Charles Darwin on the famous voyage of H.M.S. Beagle. Jemmy's versatile personality was intriguing to Darwin. He could be a naked Indian hunter when in Tierra del Fuego, and a foppish English gentleman when in the company of British naval officers. His ability to change like this inspired Darwin's earliest written reflections on the human capacity to progress from savagery to civilization.

Recent advances in pedestrian push-button design, led by the development of accessible pedestrian signals (APSs), have created a new method of communicating traffic control information to pedestrians. Some APS devices have beaconing features or verbal (speech) message capabilities obtained by pressing and holding the pedestrian push button for approximately 3 s. Other features, such as the extension of the walk interval, may also be activated with an extended press of the push button. Recent research has suggested that 3 s may be excessive because it is hard for some users to hold the push button for this long. Additionally, most pedestrians may not hold the push button for this length of time. The problem lies in determining how long the APS push button should be pressed for a push-button information message or special accessibility features to be obtained. The primary objective of the research described in this paper was to develop a time distribution of typical pedestrian push-button activation durations. Data were obtained by attaching a voltage recorder to the pedestrian push-button circuit inside traffic signal controllers at eight locations in three cities in Wisconsin and Massachusetts. This device recorded the amount of time, to the nearest 1/100 of a second, that each pedestrian push button was pressed. A total of 1,439 push-button presses were recorded. The average push-button press duration was 0.2 s. More than 95% of all push-button presses recorded were less than 1.0 s. Only four push-button presses exceeded 3.0 s. The results show that the duration of an extended push-button press needed to obtain additional crossing information can be reduced to approximately 1 s without a significant number of false calls. A 1-s press will minimize the effort required for pedestrians to actuate special accessible features, while it will minimize unnecessary noise and vehicular traffic disruption.
