Abstract:
The dissertation contains a critical examination of different conceptualizations of cyclical phenomena in the macro-economy ; it provides an in-depth exploration of the classical, monetary approach, also know as the Austrian theory of the business cycle, which regained academic respectability recently. The author adds a comparative institutional dimension by comparing different institutional contexts, in particular with respect to the tendencies they may manifest towards economic instability, intertemporal discoordination etc. The thesis further contains : a critical examination of the arguments for and against fractional reserve free banking ; a critical comment about a recent attempt to incorporate notions drawn from the contemporary theory of the behavior towards risk in a theory of the business cycle. Particular attention is also given to methodological questions, such as : the legitimacy of the use of numerical probability concepts ; the quest for adequate micro-foundations for a theory of the business cycle

Yanamandram, Venkata Krishna Kumar. "Retention of dissatisfied business-to-business services customers." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2008. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/28954.

Abstract:
The strategic importance of customer retention and the costs associated with customer switching behaviour have resulted in researchers devoting considerable attention to investigating the switching and/or staying behaviour of customers. However, relatively little attention has been devoted to investigating (1) the important deterrents to discontinuing the relationship in a single model in the business-to-business (B-to-B) service sector, and (2) the mediating factors under the condition of dissatisfaction in the B-to-B services sector. The fastest growth in services marketing today is in business markets, making this an important area of study with significance for marketers, particularly in terms of the development of customer retention. A two-stage research design, with qualitative and quantitative phases, was employed in the current research using a single key informant approach. The qualitative study utilised an indepth interview technique in which key informants representing 21 businesses provided interviews. The quantitative study employed a cross-sectional email URL embedded Web survey of key informants, which resulted in a final sample size of 376 responses. The simultaneous nature of the multiple relationships between key constructs was analysed using structural equation modelling. The research demonstrated that distributive justice, procedural justice, interactional justice, satisfaction with complaint—handling, benefit-loss costs, economic-loss costs, learning costs, sunk costs, interpersonal relationships, dependence and calculative commitment are the direct and indirect factors that influence the likelihood of dissatisfied customers remaining in a relationship. A key finding is the mediating role of both dependence and calculative commitment on the relationship between specific firmlevel investments and repurchase intentions. This thesis makes four contributions. Firstly, it uses a business services context, which is an under—researched area for this research problem. Secondly, it connects determinant factors to an outcome variable in explaining the tendency among B—to-B services customers, who have complained and considered switching, to remain involved in a relationship that is dissatisfying overall. Thirdly, it examines the effects of antecedents on calculative commitment that have previously not been examined, thus making a conceptual and empirical contribution. Finally, it offers managerial implications for the offending service firms as well as for those service firms that are attempting to attract dissatisfied prospective switchers of the offending firm.

The improvement of business processes is considered important to support companies competitiveness and sustainability, therefore, being highlighted in the academic community. In this way, the improvement of the organizational processes can be achieved through the business processes redesign, which is considered the most value-added phase in a business process management (BPM) project. However, despite the existence of an extensive literature on the subject of business processes redesign, methodologies or structured procedures that aim to understand the transformation from the as-is to the desired to-be processes are still scarce. Within this context, in order to fill this gap in the literature, this study presents the empirical findings and the lessons learnt from an action research with the objective of redesigning the logistic processes of a cultural production enterprise. The empirical study lasted nine months. A synthesis conceptual model for redesigning organizational business processes was proposed based on the literature. This model incorporated three tiers (i.e., organization, business processes and implementation) and provided guidance for conducting the empirical study. Different critical success factors and barriers have been identified and analyzed with a focus on organizational, social, and technical dimensions, resulting in contributions to scholars and to practitioners in redesigning business process approaches.

Warren, Richard C. "Research on corporate governance and business ethics." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2013. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/322949/.

Full text
Abstract:
My research and publications over the past 25 years can be related to two major themes: building up the case for business ethics education in UK Business schools, and the development of a virtue ethics approach to institution building in business and management. My business ethics research papers have been focused on the exploration and use of virtue theory as an approach to applied ethics in the context of business and organisational life, exploring subjects such as loyalty, codes of conduct, executive remuneration, job security, health hazards, service work, shareholder responsibilities, temperance, maritime piracy. Virtue theory is a useful framework to approach ethical issues in work organizations. First, this is because its emphasis on the shared values in a community (rather than a set of universal rules) lends itself to understanding ethical standards within communities of practice or professions. Second, because of its emphasis on moral education and development, virtue ethics has useful purchase on issues around management and professional development. These two themes were combined in the study of corporate governance and accountability. The relationship between business and society is a complex phenomenon and requires a multi-disciplinary approach to understand its full ramifications. My book, Corporate Governance and Accountability is an analysis and a synthesis of the politics of corporate governance and draws upon economics, management, law, politics, ethics, and sociology to examine the representative institution of business in our society, the company. An analysis is made of how its legal form has changed over the years in response to social drivers and political imperatives. The book attempts to track the nature and course of these developments and tries to understand the present situation, and then attempts to give some insights into how companies may be expected to develop in the future. The perspective of the study, although multi-disciplinary, in many aspects is perhaps, in the final analysis, predominantly political, because it is the relationship of the company to society that is the major focus of the analysis. In this respect, a major theme of the study is to examine to what extent the corporate form changed in response to socio-political factors as well as economic factors.

Abstract:
Further, these quantitative findings lend statistically and practically significant support for (1) the antecedent roles of marketing insight and marketing imagination, (2) the negative (as predicted) moderating role of product innovation radicalness, and (3) several specific inter-workings among the marketing-innovation spaces that that offer substantial research contributions to the marketing strategy literature for researchers and managers.; This research conceptualizes and develops a scale for the marketing innovation construct for the purpose of furthering research in marketing strategy. This marketing innovation construct and its associated strategic activities are clearly distinguished from product and process innovation, better enabling researchers and practitioners to identify new and updated paths from innovation to firm performance. Marketing innovation is defined as the degree of novelty in the implementation of three core business processes: (1) product development management, (2) supply chain management, and (3) customer relationship management, as identified in the Srivastava, Shervani & Fahey (1999) framework. Results from qualitative interviews indicate marketing innovation is developed and fostered by marketing insight and marketing imagination, and these relationships appear to be moderated by the market orientation of the firm. As conceptualized, marketing innovation is suggested to enhance firm performance via (1) the marketing-product space, (2) the marketing-process space, and (3) the marketing-relationship space. This enhancement process, however, is conjectured to be moderated by the degree of radical product innovation the firm is currently undergoing as well as the degree of process innovation the firm practices. A complete discussion of marketing innovation's antecedents, manifestations, and consequences is presented. A comprehensive research model, method, and results from an empirical study of qualified business executives, testing key relationships in the marketing innovation framework, are discussed. Empirical study results confirm marketing innovation's powerful ability to predict firm performance, even in the presence of a multiple of control variables.

Jamaluddin, Askiah Binti. "Decision-making for business growth: small family businesses in Selangor, Malaysia." Thesis, Curtin University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/653.

Abstract:
In Malaysia, approximately 90% of the businesses are categorized as small businesses. Although the majority of the small businesses are family owned, they make a significant contribution to the nation’s gross domestic product. Therefore, the prevalence of small family businesses has a potential economic and social impact that is realised in terms of reducing unemployment rates and growing the family income. The objective in this study was to explore and analyse decisions made about business growth in various types of Malay small family businesses in Selangor, Malaysia. The researcher investigated decisions made in both business and family realms. The importance of the study was in adding to the existing knowledge on decision-making about business growth in small family businesses; specifically, the Malay small family business. Furthermore, the results have been used to construct an original research outcomes model (ROM) that provides a unique contribution to the policy and practice of small family business development. Similarly, the ROM can be used to continue research into small family businesses.A qualitative methodology using a case study approach was a valuable strategy allowing the researcher to obtain in-depth information about decisions for business growth. The participation of seven small family business owners and selected family members by means of face-to-face interview techniques allowed for the collection of insightful data of family and business activities; the first-hand data enhanced the originality of the result. Interview data were transcribed and a thematic analysis technique applied to acquire research patterns; firstly, using within-case analysis and, secondly, cross-case analysis. Research results supported much of the extant literature that identified the owner of small family business as the key person in decision-making. The findings extended current knowledge by demonstrating how actual decisions are made implemented in small family businesses. Use of family discussion was identified as a main advantage as a precursor to authoritative decision-making by the owner. Finally, in identifying factors which underlie the decision-making in order to maximise business growth, the results of the study have provided benefits for small business researchers, policy makers, small business advisors, small family business owners and family members involved in the business.

These attributes include industry''''s scale, economic structure, status for supply and demand, adoption of information technology, etc. As to elements of business model for electronic e-Marketplaces, the search considers three major ones including revenue sources, transaction mechanisms and value-added services. The research finds market makers should try to develop diversified revenue streams and the price making of trading objects will depend on the function of platform used. Moreover, providing value-added services will be regarded as a key competitive advantage for market makers and a new source of creating revenue. In addition, an e-Marketplace established by industry consortium will have more chances to survive than established by third-party, because it has some such advantages as domain knowledge, human relationships, plenty of capital, etc. In the last year, Taiwan''''s market makers had met many challenges due to unsound infrastructure and resistance to change. The research believes that market makers should build up their own relationships and provide value-added services as soon as possible.

Taiwan semiconductor foundries led the way in the worldwide semiconductor history by their business models. The top two companies, the Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing company and United microelectronics have driven the vigorous development of scientific parks and owns 80% of the global foundry business. Many new companies; however, are growing worldwide. The relaxation of the cross-strait policy is threat to shift in the current wafer manufacturing industry. Many factors including the relationship between the wafer foundry and IC design, supply chain, and customer partnerships can determine the success of failure of a wafer manufacture. The technology process breakthrough and goods delivery times also determine customers order volume. Currently, successful foundries are descried on two levels; innovative business orientation and process technology leadership. TSMC uses a unique service model to establish a partnership relationship with customers, such as “you have my back and I have yours.”The foundry business creates a cooperation partnership model by manufacturing the customers’ designer request and staying away from independent IC design. Several factors are necessary to maintain the leading process technology in IC areas, including technology competiveness, superior product yield, an elite R & D team, a process exploration sector for the future process, and advanced process technology. Building up customer trust and a innovative business model are the keys to winning customer orders. Today’s foundry market is still dominated by Taiwan, the worldwide foundry companies such as Global Foundries, Korean companies, and mainland companies share the remainder of the market share. The mainland companies still produce 8-inch wafers and their order book is dominated by overseas orders. The core competiveness of foundry business is closely related with designs, the process maturity of the technology and the availability of high-yield production. Facing global competition, Taiwanese companies can adopt the non-conservative approach by forming an alliance with integrated device manufacturers. Taiwanese companies hold the technology leadership, and know that keeping the technology leadership important. The semiconductor industry has been developing for over 40 years like a sunset industry; a new business model development would revitalize the future semiconductor industry. This thesis examines the successful pure-play foundries in terms of their business models. The linkage between foundry and upstream/downstream industries is reviewed. We purpose that the non-pure play foundry is a more successful model based on the close relationship between the foundry and IC design; the possibilities of transformation of pure-play foundries to meet future market changes are discussed.

Due to global warming and environmental awareness, reduce carbon emissions has become a global endeavors. The smart grid in recent years has aroused attention in the world, because it not only can improve energy efficiency and carbon reduction targets but also generate electricity through smart grid and sell electricity back to power companies. However, in addition to the basic purposes other than those, if properly planned, issued by a high degree of intellectual power and creates the potential benefits of innovative business models. These innovative business model, through the network of family or company and other units of equipment, social interaction and needs to be linked to the network, monitor or share any time to reach the smart of life, business infrastructure management and even more innovative applications possibilities. But while the development of smart grid appears to have huge business opportunities, in fact, talking about the current literature have only limited power or energy management information collection, and no reports of any further developments. Also present with the smart grid-related literature, are also only limited to technical specifications, and there is no smart grid of the possible business mode of operation extends or profit model of the relevant literature in specific instructions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is trying to develop the Smart Grid is the subject of Energy Services Company (ESCO) operating a feasible business model structure. In this study, Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010) of the proposed business model based on nine building blocks for the blueprint and set of family and corporate clients as major customers, customer needs based on household customer value, to develop the first stage of the study "business model based model". Second, this study invited two experts in smart grid experts interviewed for this research to make a "business model based model" does not feature additions or deletions made such proposals in order to strengthen and confirm that the proposed business model is feasible. The third phase of this study is to be amended according to the advice of experts, this study provides the last viable "smart grid business model", and according to the mode of operation detailed in the nine business model building blocks of thinking of each block allocation of resources and related context and so on. In addition to concrete feasible "smart grid business model", this analysis also with the Institute for Venkatraman (1995) referred to the「IT-Enabled Business Transformation:From Automation to Business Scope Redefinition」concept echoes. Mode of operation through the proposed of smart grid business model, this study suggests that the grid is not just to play a functional value only, grid technology can be closely integrated with each other and family activities, resulting in more innovation and value, including: the hedonic, social, intellectual and situational value, and thus to the subject of smart grid energy services for the operation of the company derived more value from the multi-thinking to the smart grid of the potential and benefits for maximum play.

The mobile communication market in Taiwan has reached saturation with cell phones being readily accessible. The focus for future development hence points to increasing the usage of such communication devices, and the key lies in the introduction of accessorial services. These accessorial services allowed telecommunication to evolve from the “age of hearing” to the “age of visualization”. Communication devices no longer serve to simply communicate, but also to download movies and to listen to music. They are no longer used as tools, but as a representation of the user. There are three factors involved in the application of telecommunication in business: infrastructure, accessorial services, and hardware installation. A well-established infrastructure involves a stable, efficient, and well-covered wireless network and enables the use of accessorial services. The application of accessorial services must fulfill the customer's needs. In addition, the installation of hardware must be well developed to be fully compatible between differences in size, graphics, formats, etc. With the modern society taking the idea of individualism as the center, communication devices will do the same to fulfill users' demands. This is the idea behind "Mobile 2.0." The study is based on the ideas of Mobile 2.0 to study future business applications and hardware accessories.

The development of full-fledged e-learning tools in recent years has highlighted its benefits—no time or space limitations, reduced learning time and cost, and the availability of interactive and diverse materials, making it a suitable option for after-school remedial learning. The question that arises is how can value be added to entrance-examination-oriented services? An innovative business model that connects e-learning with physical learning support mechanisms could effectively improve user-learning motivation and performance as well as service innovations that could further differentiate e-learning providers. With this in mind, this study examines the methods needed to help meet consumer expectations after e-learning product purchases. Secondary school students preparing for entrance examinations are generally passive learners, meaning that they may be less motivated to learn through e-learning courses (ELC), resulting in an abandonment of e-learning tools. Furthermore, the integrity of e-learning materials has often been questioned regarding the lack of physical learning support mechanisms and poor learning interaction, both of which may contribute to learners’ poor performance. In addition, current e-learning materials often follow a one-time, buy-all sales strategy that provides users with an extended period, which means that the e-learning products are highly priced. Moreover, the consequence of this sales strategy is that users are tied to the purchased products, as switching costs are high. Based on the results of a user survey, in-depth user interviews, and a business-model-based case analysis, this study designs an innovative competitive e-learning business model. Current e-learning products are most often sold using a monorail approach such as by direct marketing or through stores, after which the users are left to their own devices. However, users question the effectiveness this e-learning business model, as it is believed that the lack of the mentor mechanisms found in physical learning is a problem for e-learning promotion. The study explored method to reduce barrier to e-learning, improve student acceptance, and build innovative e-learning model for a unique business mode that addressed user’s long-standing distrust of the technology and achieved a better learning efficiency, in order to achieve the purpose of research. The Top1 Study Center developed in this study integrates physical learning support services with e-learning. The proposed innovative business model was tested for three years to verify whether it was able to increase the consumer’s intention to purchase and motivation to use. Over the three years of observation, the Top1 Study Center produced better results for the business-model-based operations and sales revenues and showed greater operational efficiency compared with traditional e-learning business units. Therefore, it was proven that an innovative business model that combines physical channels with dedicated learning support teams can boost the effectiveness of e-learning sales and market acceptance. Through the research and its evidence, it was found that innovative integrated virtual and physical service proved to be essential for e-learning users, especially the high school students. In the study, a dual-track innovative business model was proposed for e-learning. The highly customized and innovative service was introduced into the e-learning process, and a perfect mentoring mechanism with physical counseling environment were the supporting services. The study found that the innovative business model could be a new remedial teaching option for high school students and was a driving force for innovation based on the result of research on the existing e-learning market.

Business contribution has been playing an important role in the effect of upgrading a nation’s education, science research, health care, social welfare, political development and so forth. Many articles in Taiwan have examined the tax laws which regulate the tax deductibility and the tax preference of business contribution. However, it seems that the reasons why the businesses donate and how the relevant factors affect the business contribution have not been explored by the extant literature in Taiwan. The main purpose of this study is to explore the motivation of business contribution. The data used in this empirical study is based on a panel data from the 1994-1997 business income tax returns complied by the Public Finance and Tax Data Processing Center, Ministry of Finance. To mitigate the problem of omitted variables, this study used the fixed effects model, random effects model and ordinary least square model to analyze the panel data. More specifically, this study anticipates to achieve the following objectives: 1.provide the descriptive statistics of the business contribution behavior to demonstrate the present status of business contribution; 2.investigate the factors which affect the contribution level of business, particularly, the income elasticity and the tax rate elasticity of business contribution. The empirical results indicate the business contribution is motivated by profit maximization model, managers’ utility maximization model, and social responsibility model. Tax rate, advertising intense and economy power affect contribution level significantly. And, corporations which used attested tax returns donate less than non-attested ones. In addition, the industry category that a business belongs to also affect the contribution level. Meanwhile, since the results show that managers may make contribution to maximize their own utility, it is suggested that financial statements should disclose the information of material contribution activities.

Business contribution has been playing an important role in the effect of upgrading a nation''s education, science research, health care, social welfare, political development and so on. But it seems that the factors that affect the business contribution have not been examined in Taiwan. The main purpose of this research is to empirically explore the motivation of business contribution. The data used in this empirical study is based on firm-level data from the 1996 business income tax returns complied by the Public Finance and Tax Data Processing Center, Ministry of Finance. Tobit model is used to analyze the determinants of business contribution. More specifically, this study anticipates to achieve the following objectives: 1. provide descriptive statistics to demonstrate the present status of business contribution. 2. investigate the factors which affect the contribution level of business. The empirical results indicate that business contribution is motivated by both profit maximization model and managers'' utility maximization model. The level of business income also affects contribution level significantly. In addition, attested tax returns donate higher level than non-attested ones. Therefore, expanding the usage of CPA attested tax returns may increase the amount of business donation. In other words, providing more tax preferences to CPA attested tax returns may help to upgrade our education, social welfare, health care and so on. With the development of technology and the progress of medicine, making the life extension, however, aging population is a problem faced by every country. The proportion of people aged over 65 in Taiwan increased over than 7% at the end of 1993, certainly as the aging society. With the demand of the long-term care service has increased steadily, the supply is insufficient. However, to assign existing resources efficiently and to supply the old man care service in the living environment will be the focus of long-term care industry in the future. The aim of this study was to analyze the business strategy trend of the long-term care mechanism according to the operating performance and efficiency. The questionnaire of this study was made with AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and IPA (importance-performance analysis). The objects of this study were the 16 managers and the 86 supervisors in the 16 Tainan government-registered qualified retirement centers. By SWOT analysis, expected to provide the managers direction and measure. The result of this study demonstrated the most important parts of the management by the managers and supervisors in the long-term care centers were the services, human resources and internal business structure; the secondary is the equipment and potentiality. That proves the domestic long-term care institutions which still focus on the internal administration belong to the more conservativetype. As the care demand and competitors increasing, and more requirements to improve the quality of care, there were more challenges to the long-term care industry. Therefore, it is very important for the long-term care service industry to innovate the operating mold.

Most business rankings published by domestic journals and institutes are based on single indicator such as net sales or total equity. Only very few rankings were generated based on composite indicator of managementperformance.Accordingly, this paper attempts to construct a model that usesmultivariate analysis to choose the composite indicator and considers bothfinancial and non-financial variables to provide a more thorough picture about the business performance. Based on prior studies, this paper first applied factor analysis on the 49variables of 270 listed companies in 1994. This approach identified seven common factors: profitability, size, liquidity, activity, ability of dividendspayout, cash flows, and productivity. Second, the variable with the largest factor loading on each common factorwas selected as representative variable. These seven variables are return on assets, total equity, current ratio, total asset turnover, total number of dividends payout years in last five years, cash flows from operating/total liabilities, and net sales per employee. Third, this paper tried to weigh these seven variables by using sensitivity analysis. The final weights of variables were decided by selectingthe weighting mix with the least difference of ranking compared with other mixes. The selected weighting mix of these seven variables is as follows: return on assets, 31%; total equity, current ratio, total asset turnover, 15% each; total number of dividends payout years in last five years, cash flows from operating/total liabilities, net sales per employee, 8% each. Based on the variables and their weights described above, composite indicator of business performance was generated. This study ranked 310 listed companies using 1995 financial and non-financial data. The final ranking showsthat the top 10 are either electronic companies or plastics companies.

The “Business Model” began to be widely used and spread in the 1990s, the simplest way to describe business model is in what way the organization to make money. For the business administration researchers and corporate managers, business model provides three functions: learning, development, and implementation. However, the business model does not have a recognized accepted definition, caused confusion to use the business model for the managers. Therefore requires an appropriate tool, to simply describe the concept that business model want to communicate. System dynamics is a method proposed by Professor Jay W. Forrester in 1956, the main concept is to think in a macro point of view, to solve the problem, to avoid thinking of the micro point of view and limited fragment. System dynamics use the basic concept of the stock and flow, plus auxiliary variables and relationships linking, develop a set of tools used to simulate the operation of the system. It’s simple image expression, very suitable to describe the business model concept. This research study the literature of business model, system dynamics, value chain and innovation, critical success factor and performance indicators, chain restaurant industry in Taiwan, industrial personal computer industry in Taiwan, and instrument manufacturing industry in Taiwan, define the business model is a frame of revenue flow, logistics flow, value flow, and information flow. Use system dynamics to develop the business model of chain restaurant industry, industrial personal computer industry, and instrument manufacturing industry. Sum up a general value chain business model, and a development process to construct a business model by system dynamics. This research contribution, in the business administration academic, is confirmed the ability to explain business model using by system dynamics, and summed up a development process of constructing business model by system dynamics. The contribution in business practices is confirmed the system dynamics model can simulate the operation of the enterprise, and the simulation results provide as a reference for decision making. Since the Business Merger and Acquisition Law has been promulgated from 6th, February, 2002 by Taiwan government, there have been a lot of acquisitions proceeded. Till 2009, the total numbers of acquisitions have been reached 1334 and the amount totaled 620 billion. 60.5% of acquisition companies had capital of less than 0.5 billion and 17.6% of them had capital of more than 2 billions. From industry point of view, the electronics, construction, and telecom industries have accounted for a larger portion of the acquisitions. In the past 8 years, a conclusion can be made that that acquisitions have been emerged into M-shape distribution. Companies with less than 0.1 billion in capital were involved in 457 acquisitions and companies with more than 2 billion in capital are involved in 235 acquisitions which accounted for 52% of total acquisitions. There are 21 international acquisitions and the amount totaled 5.8 billion. More and more studies related to acquisitions are published while merging activities are taken place more and more often in industries. Most studies used financial performance as criteria to determine if the acquisition is successful or not. It’s rare to see analysis focus on merging timing, payment method, and merging model, as well as how they affect the tax on stockholders in acquired company. This proposal is progressed via case studies, article summaries, and regulations explanation to understand how acquiring timing, payment method, and the strategy would affect stockholders. Three conclusions were listed below: 1.When the acquired company has price/book ratio less than 1, it’s a good timing for acquisition. 2.Pay off acquisition by「earn-out payment」: Link「earn-out payment」with performance. The acquisition company can pay the acquisition price sequentially along with its profit, and then can avoid one-time huge cash outflow, threatening to the management’s power, as well as damaging stockholding structure. 3.Acquisition by 2 stages: First, surviving company acquire 100% interest in the disappearing company through stock exchange, the disappearing company then will be the wholly owned subsidiary of the surviving company. Second, surviving company process a simple parent subsidiary merger. As a result, the shareholders of the disappearing company will be charged income tax of stock exchange rather than recognize dividend gain under the one stage acquisition.
