Abstract:
This paper proposes a research model that outlines the determinants of functional families and profitable businesses—requisites for family business sustainability. Two features distinguish the model from previous models: inclusion of the family in the same detail as the business and emphasis on the key features of family and business. Delineation of the interface between the family and the business permits the use of research methods that allow for variable degrees of overlap of family and business rather than assuming that family businesses constitute either a single system or two separate systems. The research model is also compatible with a variety of theoretical perspectives.

Abstract:
The dissertation contains a critical examination of different conceptualizations of cyclical phenomena in the macro-economy ; it provides an in-depth exploration of the classical, monetary approach, also know as the Austrian theory of the business cycle, which regained academic respectability recently. The author adds a comparative institutional dimension by comparing different institutional contexts, in particular with respect to the tendencies they may manifest towards economic instability, intertemporal discoordination etc. The thesis further contains : a critical examination of the arguments for and against fractional reserve free banking ; a critical comment about a recent attempt to incorporate notions drawn from the contemporary theory of the behavior towards risk in a theory of the business cycle. Particular attention is also given to methodological questions, such as : the legitimacy of the use of numerical probability concepts ; the quest for adequate micro-foundations for a theory of the business cycle

Yanamandram, Venkata Krishna Kumar. "Retention of dissatisfied business-to-business services customers." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2008. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/28954.

Abstract:
The strategic importance of customer retention and the costs associated with customer switching behaviour have resulted in researchers devoting considerable attention to investigating the switching and/or staying behaviour of customers. However, relatively little attention has been devoted to investigating (1) the important deterrents to discontinuing the relationship in a single model in the business-to-business (B-to-B) service sector, and (2) the mediating factors under the condition of dissatisfaction in the B-to-B services sector. The fastest growth in services marketing today is in business markets, making this an important area of study with significance for marketers, particularly in terms of the development of customer retention. A two-stage research design, with qualitative and quantitative phases, was employed in the current research using a single key informant approach. The qualitative study utilised an indepth interview technique in which key informants representing 21 businesses provided interviews. The quantitative study employed a cross-sectional email URL embedded Web survey of key informants, which resulted in a final sample size of 376 responses. The simultaneous nature of the multiple relationships between key constructs was analysed using structural equation modelling. The research demonstrated that distributive justice, procedural justice, interactional justice, satisfaction with complaint—handling, benefit-loss costs, economic-loss costs, learning costs, sunk costs, interpersonal relationships, dependence and calculative commitment are the direct and indirect factors that influence the likelihood of dissatisfied customers remaining in a relationship. A key finding is the mediating role of both dependence and calculative commitment on the relationship between specific firmlevel investments and repurchase intentions. This thesis makes four contributions. Firstly, it uses a business services context, which is an under—researched area for this research problem. Secondly, it connects determinant factors to an outcome variable in explaining the tendency among B—to-B services customers, who have complained and considered switching, to remain involved in a relationship that is dissatisfying overall. Thirdly, it examines the effects of antecedents on calculative commitment that have previously not been examined, thus making a conceptual and empirical contribution. Finally, it offers managerial implications for the offending service firms as well as for those service firms that are attempting to attract dissatisfied prospective switchers of the offending firm.

The improvement of business processes is considered important to support companies competitiveness and sustainability, therefore, being highlighted in the academic community. In this way, the improvement of the organizational processes can be achieved through the business processes redesign, which is considered the most value-added phase in a business process management (BPM) project. However, despite the existence of an extensive literature on the subject of business processes redesign, methodologies or structured procedures that aim to understand the transformation from the as-is to the desired to-be processes are still scarce. Within this context, in order to fill this gap in the literature, this study presents the empirical findings and the lessons learnt from an action research with the objective of redesigning the logistic processes of a cultural production enterprise. The empirical study lasted nine months. A synthesis conceptual model for redesigning organizational business processes was proposed based on the literature. This model incorporated three tiers (i.e., organization, business processes and implementation) and provided guidance for conducting the empirical study. Different critical success factors and barriers have been identified and analyzed with a focus on organizational, social, and technical dimensions, resulting in contributions to scholars and to practitioners in redesigning business process approaches.

Warren, Richard C. "Research on corporate governance and business ethics." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2013. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/322949/.

Full text
Abstract:
My research and publications over the past 25 years can be related to two major themes: building up the case for business ethics education in UK Business schools, and the development of a virtue ethics approach to institution building in business and management. My business ethics research papers have been focused on the exploration and use of virtue theory as an approach to applied ethics in the context of business and organisational life, exploring subjects such as loyalty, codes of conduct, executive remuneration, job security, health hazards, service work, shareholder responsibilities, temperance, maritime piracy. Virtue theory is a useful framework to approach ethical issues in work organizations. First, this is because its emphasis on the shared values in a community (rather than a set of universal rules) lends itself to understanding ethical standards within communities of practice or professions. Second, because of its emphasis on moral education and development, virtue ethics has useful purchase on issues around management and professional development. These two themes were combined in the study of corporate governance and accountability. The relationship between business and society is a complex phenomenon and requires a multi-disciplinary approach to understand its full ramifications. My book, Corporate Governance and Accountability is an analysis and a synthesis of the politics of corporate governance and draws upon economics, management, law, politics, ethics, and sociology to examine the representative institution of business in our society, the company. An analysis is made of how its legal form has changed over the years in response to social drivers and political imperatives. The book attempts to track the nature and course of these developments and tries to understand the present situation, and then attempts to give some insights into how companies may be expected to develop in the future. The perspective of the study, although multi-disciplinary, in many aspects is perhaps, in the final analysis, predominantly political, because it is the relationship of the company to society that is the major focus of the analysis. In this respect, a major theme of the study is to examine to what extent the corporate form changed in response to socio-political factors as well as economic factors.

This thesis describes the innovation system in and around Lund. The aim was to investigate the innovation system in and around Lund by using functional analysis, i.e. analyzing functions and processes rather than actors and their independent task. Actors have been identified, grouped by their relevance and connection to specific processes, and described. A functional analysis has then been performed on the selected actors to establish current status and potential future needs.

Abstract:
Further, these quantitative findings lend statistically and practically significant support for (1) the antecedent roles of marketing insight and marketing imagination, (2) the negative (as predicted) moderating role of product innovation radicalness, and (3) several specific inter-workings among the marketing-innovation spaces that that offer substantial research contributions to the marketing strategy literature for researchers and managers.; This research conceptualizes and develops a scale for the marketing innovation construct for the purpose of furthering research in marketing strategy. This marketing innovation construct and its associated strategic activities are clearly distinguished from product and process innovation, better enabling researchers and practitioners to identify new and updated paths from innovation to firm performance. Marketing innovation is defined as the degree of novelty in the implementation of three core business processes: (1) product development management, (2) supply chain management, and (3) customer relationship management, as identified in the Srivastava, Shervani & Fahey (1999) framework. Results from qualitative interviews indicate marketing innovation is developed and fostered by marketing insight and marketing imagination, and these relationships appear to be moderated by the market orientation of the firm. As conceptualized, marketing innovation is suggested to enhance firm performance via (1) the marketing-product space, (2) the marketing-process space, and (3) the marketing-relationship space. This enhancement process, however, is conjectured to be moderated by the degree of radical product innovation the firm is currently undergoing as well as the degree of process innovation the firm practices. A complete discussion of marketing innovation's antecedents, manifestations, and consequences is presented. A comprehensive research model, method, and results from an empirical study of qualified business executives, testing key relationships in the marketing innovation framework, are discussed. Empirical study results confirm marketing innovation's powerful ability to predict firm performance, even in the presence of a multiple of control variables.

Research, IFF. FSA and Official Controls: Research with Food Business Operators. Food Standards Agency, February 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.drn484.

Full text
Abstract:
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is an independent Government body, established in 2000 to protect public health and consumer interests in relation to food. The FSA is the Central Competent Authority (CCA) responsible for the delivery of official food and feed controls in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.. In Northern Ireland, officials from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) carry out meat hygiene official controls in approved establishments on behalf of the FSA. Food Business Operators (FBOs) in the dairy, meat and wine sectors have a direct relationship with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) via its Official Controls, including inspections, enforcement, advice and guidance. The FSA and local authorities work together deliver shellfish controls. The FSA is responsible for conducting sanitary surveys and awarding the classification status of production and relaying areas. Some FBOs in the shellfish sector have a direct relationship with the FSA in relation to its functions however local authorities are the primary point of contact for the majority. This research study – collecting the views of FBOs themselves – was intended to support the rollout of the OTP programme, and the implementation of Official Controls. The study entailed a quantitative survey of 400 FBOs based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, followed by in-depth interviews with 60 FBOs. Fieldwork took place between June and August 2022. Questionnaire coverage included FBOs’ experience of working with the FSA, their understanding of what the FSA does, the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU), and their familiarity with the OTP. The methodology adopted a similar approach to the first wave of the research, conducted in 2020, to enable time series analysis. However, this 2022 wave of the research has expanded to include the views of FBOs in Northern Ireland and those in the shellfish sector.
