Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to set forth a less-costly, more flexible approach to teaching the analysis of international business development opportunities. Design/methodology/approach The approach capitalizes upon the high-quality business condition metrics, which are necessary to inform the development decision, that have recently become freely-available through a set of institutions that gather and distribute these metrics. Findings Critical thinking skills in this area are developed here not just by understanding the tools of analysis but also by having participated in a series of active classroom activities focused upon private investment decisions in a set of disparate countries. Practical implications This approach develops rising business professionals with refined critical thinking skills who will be able to immediately contribute to international business development decision-making. Social implications Opportunities for students to learn these critical thinking skills can be far more available because the traditional method by which these skills have been taught has been by finding a partner business with the resources to pay for such data. In exchange for allowing students to use the data experientially the partner firm benefits from the work product of the students who study the international business development project at the firm’s offices. Originality/value The approach set forth provides an accessible alternate for those on-campus students and distance-learning students who do not need to have the flexibility to travel to the site of a business partner – where most of this learning has heretofore been arranged.

Uncertainty of diverse merchant business actors is very much characteristic nowadays; its variants very much depend on the type of business actors, especially digital businesses. In this study we refer to E-Metrics, where every merchant and biller are netted in user behavior activities under the term Financial Technology “acquisition.” Business actors tend to continue to compete in prioritizing innovation so that a Knowledge Acceleration Estimator (KAE) model is needed as performance to facilitate the acceleration of sustainable business under uncertainty in business opportunities, in challenges of electronic kind, or so-called e-metrics.

Abstract:
Nowadays, developers use N-tier application architecture which is a flexible and reusable structure for distribution to any number of client interfaces. In this study, we have implemented metrics extraction and analyzer tool for Business Tier and Data Access Tier source codes. We used existing object-oriented metrics and complexity software metrics as proposed for Business Tier code1,3. We use a set of metrics for the Data Access Tier that has been proposed in our previous study2. The primary aim of the implementation of the metric extraction and analyzer tool is to facilitate generation of software metrics which are used as independent variables in software quality prediction models. A secondary goal is to gather and present information on the attributes of source code to assist the programmers in managing the software projects. This tool is able to generate the principal components, correlation analysis report and descriptive statistics report. These analysis reports are essential reports for the study of software measurement and software quality management.

Quantifying country risk – and in particular, political risk – poses great difficulties for business, institutions, and investors alike. As economic indicators are updated far less frequently than Facebook feeds, it can be challenging for political risk analysts to understand, and more importantly measure, what is taking place in real time on the ground. However, with the growing availability of big data from social media platforms such as Twitter, now is an opportune moment to examine the types of social media metrics that are available and the limitations to applying them to country risk analysis, particularly during episodes of political upheaval. This study, using the qualitative method of bibliographical research, identifies the current landscape of data available from Twitter, analyzes the current and potential methods of analysis, and discusses their possible application to the field of political risk analysis. After a thorough review of the field to date, and given the expected near- to medium-term technological advancements, this study concludes that despite obstacles like the cost of data storage, limitations of real-time analysis, and the potential for data manipulation, the potential benefits of the application of social media metrics to the field of political risk analysis, particularly for structured-qualitative and quantitative models, outweigh the challenges.

Ke, Jian-yu, Fynnwin Prager, Jose Martinez, and Chris Cagle. Achieving Excellence for California’s Freight System: Developing Competitiveness and Performance Metrics; Incorporating Sustainability, Resilience, and Workforce Development. Mineta Transportation Institute, December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.2023.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the question of whether California's freight system is staying competitive with other US regions. A novel analytical framework compares supply chain performance metrics across multiple US states and regions for seaports, airports, highways, freight rail service, and distribution centers by combining the Performance Evaluation Matrix (PEM), Competitive Position Matrix (CPM), and Business Process Management (BPM) approaches. Analysis of industry data and responses from structured interviews with 30 freight industry experts across 5 transportation sectors suggests that California's freight system is competitive for seaports, airports, and freight rail; however, highways and distribution centers have room for improvement with respect to travel time reliability and operation costs, and California should prioritize infrastructure investments here. To stay competitive with the Texas and North East regions, state investments could also expand seaport container terminals and air cargo handling facilities, improve intermodal port connections and management of flows of chassis, container trucks, empty containers to ameliorate cargo backlogs and congestion on highways, at the ports, and at warehouses. The state could also invest in inland ports, transporting goods by rail directly from seaports to the Inland Empire or Central Valley.

It identifies battery electric buses charged with electricity from floating solar PV as the best option for achieving that goal; shows that, when the social cost of carbon is included, this is least cost option compared with the cost of replacing MBMs fleet with new diesel buses and with electric buses powered by Jamaicas electricity grid; and provides advice on what support is required to make this trailblazing project a reality.

McCall, Jamie, and Jason Sabatelle. Alternative Non-Economic Measures of CDFI Lending Impact: An Exploratory Analysis. Carolina Small Business Development Fund, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46712/alternative.impact.

Abstract:
CDFI impacts are overwhelmingly viewed through an economic lens. Little consideration is given to other types of metrics. Yet we believe a positive economic impact is a necessary but not sufficient condition to being an effective development institution. We assess the relationship between a CDFI's lending activities and aggregate social capital levels. Social capital – the entrepreneurial networks which occur when small businesses flourish – are a key non-economic outcome of CDIF financing and technical assistance interventions.

Brooks, Amy, Jenna Jambeck, and Eliana Mozo-Reyes. Plastic Waste Management and Leakage in Latin America and the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0002873.

Full text
Abstract:
As of 2017, 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic had been produced worldwide. Since about 40% is used in things that are thrown away relatively quickly (packaging and single use items), 6.4 billion metric tons had already become discarded materials needing to be managed. Only 9% of these discarded materials were recycled globally. The annual estimate of plastic entering our oceans globally is 5 to 13 million metric tons (MMT) per year. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has an extensive populated coast, 119,000 km of coastline and over 205 million people living within 50 km of that coastline. Waste management infrastructure is still under development in many countries. Economic growth without fully developed infrastructure can lead to increased plastic leakage. This report focuses on municipal solid waste as a source of plastic input into the environment in LAC. The reports estimates that total plastic waste available to enter the ocean in LAC in 2020 was 3.7 MMT . Under business-as-usual projections, the report anticipates that the regional quantity available to enter the oceans in 2030 will be 4.1 MMT and 4.4 MMT in 2050.

Mathew, Jijo K., Deborah Horton, and Darcy M. Bullock. Utilization of Dedicated Electric Vehicle Plug-In Charging Stations in a College Campus Environment. Purdue University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317436.

Abstract:
As electric mobility is expanding at a rapid pace, the standardized availability of gas stations compared to a scarcity of charging stations continues to be the greatest challenge for electric vehicles. With cities, university campuses and businesses promoting electric vehicle infrastructure and incentives, it is necessary to develop key performance metrics and visualizations that can track the utilization of the charging infrastructure. This study performs a manual data collection at dedicated plug-in charging stations across Purdue University to assess their utilization. Approximately 2,800 observations were conducted over 50 days across seven level 2 plug-in charging stations. Results showed that for large portion of the observations, vehicles were parked at the spots (40%) but not plugged in. Vehicles plugged in to charging stations accounted for 34% of observations. Charging station spots were vacant for 25% of observations indicating that current infrastructure meets the demand. There were 74 unique vehicles that used the spots, of which 27% were plugged in more than 10 times. Illegally parked vehicles accounted for less than 1% with only 4 repeat offenders who used these spots more than once. As electric deployment continues to increase, performance metrics will be an integral tool for agencies and decision makers to help with the maintenance and expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure.
