ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The role of the traditional purchasing department has evolved significantly over the last decade into a competitive value adding procurement function within an organisation’s lean supply chain model. It has become a necessity to work with the suppliers to provide flexible, accurate, effective and cost effective goods and/or services (Barla, 2003; Ellram, 2002). In addition organisations are developing and utilising new business models geared towards improving both the balance sheet and the income statement to respond to external forces and new market opportunities. The change in business model places additional emphasis on leveraging increased innovation from suppliers, thus having a vast impact on supply management to such an extent that organisations are creating strategic relationships (Carter et al., 2007). In this paper, the supplier relationship management model will be studied under lean philosophy as to address the focal point – sustainable procurement. The paper will consist of three main areas: Supplier relationship management – Literature study Supplier relationship management – Case study Supplier relationship management – Operational tool Supplier relationship management – Literature study will address the theoretical methodologies, best practices, benefits and advantages, etc. Supplier relationship management – Case study will showcase a South African multi-national FMCG1 manufacturer’s methodology as well as the benefits of utilising a supplier relationship management approach to procurement. Supplier relationship management – Operational tool will be a practical tool developed for evaluating and facilitating supplier relationship management in an African context. The end result of the paper should be a feasible solution to prolonging the impact of procurement, thus increasing sustainability in the maturity stage of procurement’s life span in the typical product life cycle model (Canny Buyer, 2007). 1 Fast Moving Consumer Goods (“FMCG”) are products that have a quick turnover and relatively low cost (Wikipedia, 2007a).
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die tradisionele rol van die aankope department binne ‘n organisasie het oor die laaste dekade merkwaardig verander en word nou bedryf as ‘n kompeterende waardetoevoegende skakel binne die organisasie se voorsieningsketting. Terselfdetyd het dit noodsaaklik vir leweransiers en organisasies geword om op ’n geïntegreerde wyse te werk te gaan om meer akkurate en koste-effektiewe goedere en/of dienste te lewer (Barla, 2003; Ellram, 2002). Organsisasies is ook genoodsaak om nuwe innoverende besigheidsmodelle te ontwikkel om ten beste eksterne besigheidsfaktore en nuwe markgeleenthede aan te spreek ten einde beide die balanstaat sowel as die inkomste staat positief te impakteer. Hierdie kardinale veranderinge in die besigheidsmodel van organisasies lei daar toe dat addisionele druk op leweransiers geplaas word om met innovasie navore te kom. Op sy beurt plaas dit verdere druk op die voorsieningsketting, selfs tot so ’n mate dat dit die organisasie noop om na die moontlikhede van strategiese vennootskappe te ondersoek (Carter et al., 2007). Die skryfstuk gaan leweransiers verhoudingsbestuurmodelle evalueer en bestudeer binne ‘n voorsieningsketting om sodoende die vraag na volhoubare verkryging te beantwoord. Die skryfstuk sal uit drie fokusareas bestaan, naamlik: Leweransiers Verhoudingsbestuur – Literatuurstudie Leweransiers Verhoudingsbestuur – Gevallestudie Leweransiers Verhoudingsbestuur – Bedrysmodel Leweransiers Verhoudingsbestuur – Literatuurstudie sal die teoretiese metodologie, die vooren nadele van leweransiers verhoudingsbestuur aanspreek. Leweransiers Verhoudingsbestuur – Gevallestudie sal ‘n studie loots binne die verhoudingswerkinge binne ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse multi-nationale maatskapy wat in die vinnige verbruikersgoederemark betrokke is. Leweransiers Verhoudingsbestuur – Bedrysmodel sal ’n praktiese voorstel vorendag bring om ’n leweransiersverhouding meer doeltreffende te bestuur in Afrika. Die eindresultaat van die skryfstuk sal dus ’n lewens vatbare oplossing wees om die volhoubare impak van verkrying te verleng in die volwasse stadium van ‘n produk se lewensiklus (Canny Buyer, 2007).

Abstract:
A headquarters-centered group company considered in this thesis consists of one headquarters and several operationally semi-autonomous production subsidiaries. This research investigates the situation where the headquarters provides supply chain management services shared among subsidiaries to take advantage of risk pooling effect, economies of scale, and information and resource sharing. This thesis considers three different but related scenarios. The first research scenario formulates two customer order management models. One is Headquarters-centered Common Order Management (HQ-COM) where customer orders are processed by the headquarters and then allocated to the subsidiaries. The other is Subsidiary-Autonomous Order Management (SD-AOM) where subsidiaries process customer orders relatively independent of each other. Two scenarios with demand uncertainty are simulated. One is that the order quantity exceeds the production capacity of each individual subsidiary so that the order has to be split before allocating to the subsidiaries. The other scenario is that the total quantity of selected customer orders is within the production capacity of a single subsidiary so that the orders should be merged into one batch before allocating to one subsidiary. The results show that HQ-COM outperforms SD-AOM in terms of both its performance and its robustness against demand variability. This achievement is largely due to the effects of pooling of different customer orders and sharing of production capacity among the subsidiaries. The second research scenario develops two sourcing management models: Headquarters-centered Common Sourcing Management (HQ-CSM) and Subsidiary-Autonomous Sourcing Management (SD-ASM). In HQ-CSM, two management policies are examined. One is Order Coordination policy in which common replenishment epochs are proposed by the headquarters and the subsidiaries are encouraged to coordinate the timing of their orders based on the common replenishment epochs. The other is Order Consolidation policy in which the headquarters places a combined order with the supplier. The results show that HQ-CSM outperforms SD-ASM in terms of cost and robustness against demand uncertainties. This achievement is largely due to the synergistic ordering process, the economies of scale and risk pooling effect by the implementation of transshipments. The results also reveal that Order Consolidation policy always performs better than Order Coordination policy especially in face of high demand uncertainties and high service level requirement. The third scenario considers a headquarters-managed centralized distribution center (HQ-CDC) serving multiple subsidiaries with stochastic demands. There are two kinds of inventory spaces: dedicated space and leased space. Two pricing policie--the constant pricing and the dynamic pricing--are compared. Two decision models are formulated. One is Integrated Model where the group company makes decisions on the replenishment and the space allocation simultaneously. The other is Bilevel Programming Model where the HQ-CDC and the subsidiaries make decisions sequentially. The results show that the HQ-CDC’s profit is noticeably improved in Bilevel Programming Model by the implementation of the constant pricing policy. The results also reveal that the leased space as a supplement of the reserved space leads to a more flexible space utilization and a reduced group company’s total cost especially in face of large demand and high demand fluctuation.

Natural disaster hits and damages the lives thousand of human beings and their infrastructure. So this thing insists me to write something just to get know how about all humanitarian and relief activities.I have utilized the SCM Supply chain management practices and techniques in order to conquer barriers faced by logistician of humanitarian response/ relief operation during disaster. I will use methodology of empirical data technique, barriers will be discovered and analyzed then proposed solutions would be picked up from the literature of supply chain management for the barriers to effective humanitarian logistics.There is a mixture of SCM principle from various organizations such as military, private sector and nonprofit organization in order to provide a utility to disaster/ response operations. Sugar mills represent significant capital investments. To maintain appropriate returns on their investment, sugar companies seek to run the mills at capacity over the sugarcane harvest season. Because the sugar content of cane degrades considerably once it is cut, maintaining inventories of cut cane is undesirable. Instead, mills want to coordinate the arrival of cut cane with production. We present exact solution approaches exploiting special structure of the sugarcane harvest logistics problem in Brazil and the United States.

Abstract:
Reverse logistics is different from forward logistics in objectives, operations, pricing, quality, quantity, packaging, product and information flow. Further, management of the returned products and their information is a major challenge since it is difficult to predict the time, place of origin, quantity and quality of the goods that will be returned. To establish the importance of reverse logistics as a business process and to understand related issues for information management, this research was undertaken with data from the Australian Manufacturing and E-Business organisations. This research examined six dimensions of reverse logistics. These were: (1) Factors that compel Manufacturing and E-Business organisations to manage reverse logistics; (2) Operations in product return process; (3) Methods of capturing value from returned goods; (4) Barriers to reverse logistics management; (5) Information management issues in reverse logistics; and (6) Product return trends in the E-Business industry. This research was exploratory in nature and was accomplished via a quantitative research method. It adopted a positivist epistemology and followed a deductive approach to capture reverse logistics knowledge. Research data from Manufacturing and E-Business industries was elicited with postal questionnaire surveys using structured questions. Since the data collected from the two main surveys was mainly nominal and ordinal, it was quantitatively analysed using non-parametric tests, Fisher's exact test and one sample Wilcoxon test. It also employed frequency distributions, binomial test and one sample t-test. An additional statistical test was carried out on each set of data to triangulate the finding. The tests were undertaken in Minitab spreadsheet computer packages. This research highlights the fact that reverse logistics management is an important business process in the Australian Manufacturing and E-Business industries. It is a strategic advantage, as well as an important customer service. Although substantial monetary value can be recovered from returned goods, at present two industries investigated have not tapped into this potential. Findings of this research also indicate that a lack of efficient information management is a problem in reverse logistics. Information management in the two industries is based on land-line telephone, fax and computers. This research identified that from E-Business sales error in ordering, customer change of mind on receipt of good and inefficient forward logistics operations (picking, packing and delivery) are important reasons for returns. It also established that e-businesses resell the returned goods and recapture value. The value recovery process in this industry is different from the manufacturing industries where the prevalent value recovery processes are repair, resale and recycle. Further research issues emanating from this project include evaluation methods for recapturing value from returned goods, effective information management strategies for return management and the impact of a law for returning certain types of used goods. This research is an initial effort undertaken to establish returns management in the Australian industries. It establishes that reverse logistics should be recognised as a business process in these industries.

Abstract:
Industrial parks have played an indispensible role in boosting economic and industrial development. However, further development has been impeded by the shortage of land resources and by duplicate investments on common physical assets and services. This thesis proposes the concept of Supply Hub in Industrial Park (SHIP) as a public provider of warehousing and transportation services shared by manufacturing enterprises located within an industrial park. This research investigates four typical scenarios. The first scenario explores SHIP’s storage capacity pooling effect. Inventory models are built to simulate the supply chain in a typical industrial park: with and without SHIP. Under demand variations, two rules are presented for SHIP’s space allocation: the proportional dispatching rule (PDR), and the backorder cost priority dispatching rule (BPDR). The simulation results show that the industrial park can benefit from SHIP’s storage capacity pooling especially under complementarily seasonal or identically volatile demand pattern. BPDR is more beneficial than PDR to the industrial park, SHIP, and the manufacturer with the largest backorder cost rate. The second scenario evaluates SHIP’s value in consolidating shipments via numerically comparing the supply chain with SHIP with the traditional one. Genetic algorithm is used to solve the models developed for the two supply chains. Numerical outcomes show that the industrial park can obtain significant cost savings from applying SHIP. The cost reductions increase with the size of the supply chain, the vehicle capacity, and the rates of fixed transportation cost and holding costs of finished products at manufacturers. The third scenario investigates SHIP’s storage pricing strategies. A bilevel model is proposed to optimize SHIP’s decision on storage pricing, and individual manufacturer’s decisions on replenishment and delivery. A dynamic storage pricing depending on the storage length is adopted. The bilevel model is solved in closed-form in special cases. Through numerical experiments, SHIP is found to gain more profit by using the dynamic storage pricing than the constant one. It is observed that SHIP could not gain profit improvement by raising its delivery charge. Contrary to intuition, SHIP attracts more space demands from large production-scale manufacturers when charging higher on delivery or when the public warehouse’s delivery charge is lower, and more demands from small manufacturers when the market storage price is lower. The fourth scenario discusses how SHIP and manufacturers interact to optimize their decisions on shared transportation pricing and cycle-time, and raw material delivery schedules. A bilevel model is proposed to study this problem. The theoretical analysis of the model indicates that the SHIP’s storage price is the key in determining each partner’s behaviour. For comparison, a bilevel analytical model is constructed for direct transportation. The numerical outcomes show that SHIP’s profit may not always increase with the vehicle capacity. Manufacturers make more delivery orders when SHIP charges a significantly high storage price or the holding cost rate at manufacturers is significantly low. Sharing transportation service may bring benefits to SHIP and manufacturers with large demands.

The negative environmental impacts of transportation have gained wide recognition and are at the core of issues of sustainability, especially in urban areas (Rodrigue, Slack & Comtois, 2001). Many prior researches have been carried out on negative impact of transportation on environment. To minimize and to mitigate environmental concerns, green logistics and green transportation has been introduced in recent time. Logistics companies are becoming more flexible and slowly started moving towards green implementation. Implementation of this new strategy has definite challenges for logistics companies. In order to understand environmental  problems caused by  freight transportation and its challenges associated with green implementation, the aspect of greenness and its challenges were examined especially on the case of Bring Logistics. In this thesis, various modes of transportation and their environmental problems were discussed, city traffic and its consequences, implementation challenges, use of models, etc

 

The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

 

To fulfill the purpose of this work, a qualitative research method was used with an inductive approach chosen for methodology. Materials were collected both primary and secondary sources and three types of interview were conducted i.e. face-face interview, interview through email and by phone. Eight interviews were conducted involving seven personalities from Bring Logistics Jönköping, Sweden.

 

In conclusion, a logistical structural changes were implemented as a model in order for the company to be successful in their green implementation. The problems caused by freight transportation were noise, air pollution and climate change. The challenges of green implementation were identified as financial, employees inflexibility, distribution delay, taxation and fuel pricing.


The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

Automated Logistics Environment (ALE) is a new term used by Navy and aerospace industry executives to describe the aggregate of logistics-related information systems that support modern aircraft weapon systems. The development of logistics information systems is not always well coordinated among programs, often resulting in solutions that cannot be easily integrated or made interoperable with other information systems used within the Department of Defense. A phenomenological approach was used to explore ALE program managers' lived experiences of coordinating defense acquisition programs toward the goal of creating a common environment in which information systems are well integrated and interoperable. The business problems associated with smart aircraft diagnostic, prognostic, health and usage monitoring systems, and the challenges created by the large volumes of data that are being collected by sensors onboard newly deployed smart aircraft also were explored. This qualitative study was accomplished by conducting interviews with 18 logistics and information technology managers from Naval Air Systems Command, Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland with first-hand experience in dealing with ALE. The study results were presented in the form of a composite description derived from the textural-structural descriptions for each study participant. Results of the study included the structures of meaning surrounding ALE and identified social, organizational, and other non-technical components of systems integration that have been largely ignored in the information systems literature. Study results also included the perceived benefits and disadvantages of a common Automated Logistics Environment. Future researchers should consider the rich opportunities available to study other system of systems environments in federal government agencies including the U.S. Department of Defense, military departments, and subordinate defense agencies. While scholars may desire to simplify complex phenomena, future researchers should take care to avoid oversimplification of systems integration constructs in system of systems environments. As shown by this current ALE study, some technical and nontechnical issues may be inseparable in a real world setting. The ALE study results indicated that research that focuses on either technical or non-technical aspects of systems integration may not fully account for dynamic, interrelated (and often subtle) factors and may restrict our understanding of systems integration.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: HM Timber operates five formal sawmills in South Africa, situated around the towns of Tzaneen, Sabie, Mthatha and Kokstad. The Mills in the Kokstad area experience unacceptable lead times during the months of April/May and November/December, when the demand for timber increases and the availability of transport in the area decreases. This problem is expected to intensify with the addition of HM Timber’s new Plywood plant just outside the town of Kokstad. The plywood also adds another dimension to the distribution problem in that the market generally demands smaller deliveries more often. With only one Distribution Centre in Cape Town, HM Timber is not geared to service this market in the rest of South Africa. The main objective of this research report is to determine and define the key success factors in the transport and distribution of timber products and how these factors can be integrated into various strategic options that will address HM Timber’s current distribution problems. A review of the literature summarises the latest trends in modern supply chain management. Supply chains consist of various businesses that aim to optimise all their operations and supply customers with good quality products and excellent service at affordable prices. Competition in modern day business increasingly occurs at supply chain level and the success of individual organisations therefore depends on the success of the entire supply chain. The focus is thus on collaboration and jointly developing supply chain strategies. The literature review ends with a summary of the most important aspects in the effective and efficient management of Distribution Centres. Analyses of HM Timber’s logistics operations reveal that various factors contribute to their transport problems during the months of April/May and November/December. These include the payment of rates that are not market-related, loading problems at the mills, a lack of coordination and the fact that HM Timber is not a contracted client and therefore not regarded a priority. The analysis also includes a discussion on the Western Cape Distribution Centre and the problems this facility is having with general administration, inventory management and the effective use of IT systems. A range of strategic options is available to HM Timber that will allow the company to improve its overall management of logistics. The options investigated include own operations as well as outsourced 3PL and 4PL solutions. To assist HM Timber in selecting the best logistics option, three models are presented to evaluate the various alternatives and to assist in deciding on the best option. The first model evaluates the costs associated with different transport options, while the second model allows the user to compare the costs of different Distribution Centre options. Finally, a multi-criteria decision model is presented that will assist HM Timber in selecting the best option for each mill and region. With the VISA transport model, Manline is rated the best option for all Weza and Singisi’s deliveries. Manline is also rated the best for Langeni’s long-distance deliveries, while HM Timber’s own fleet is rated the best option for Langeni’s local deliveries. Results from the Distribution Centre (DC) models indicate the cost structures to be sensitive to changes in the premiums achieved and changes in the market e.g. the customer base, product types, and volumes sold. The Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth DCs show acceptable EBIT margins based on the projected sales, but the projected EBIT margins for Durban are less than 2 %, making the Durban DC a less than attractive business proposition. A direct distribution solution is proposed for the KwaZulu-Natal area, whereby multiple deliveries are made directly from the mills as well as the new plywood plant in Kokstad. In conclusion, eight factors are identified as key to the successful transportation and distribution of timber products. HM Timber rates very well against the majority of these factors, but needs to focus on a number of issues to be able to maintain their high levels of customer service. These include investing in a dedicated logistics department, improving internal and external collaboration and coordination efforts and improving the efficiency of a number of operational and information technology systems.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: HM Timber bedryf vyf formele saagmeulens in Suid-Afrika wat geleë is in die omgewings van Tzaneen, Sabie, Mthatha en Kokstad. Die meulens in die Kokstad omgewing ondervind onaanvaarbare vertragings in aflewerings gedurende April/Mei en November/Desember wanneer die aanvraag na houtprodukte toeneem en die beskikbaarheid van vervoer in die Kokstad area afneem. Hierdie probleem gaan na verwagting groter word namate die laaghoutvolumes toeneem. ‘n Verdere uitdaging in die verspreiding van laaghout is die feit dat kliënte oor die algemeen kleiner hoeveelhede, meer gereeld aankoop. HM Timber bedryf slegs een Verspreidingsentrum in Kaapstad en is dus nie gereed om ander dele van Suid-Afrika te bedien nie. Die hoofdoelwit van hierdie navorsingsverslag is om te bepaal watter faktore noodsaaklik is om suksesvol te wees in die vervoer en verspreiding van houtprodukte. Die doel is verder om te bepaal hoe hierdie faktore in verskillende strategiese opsies geïntegreer kan word ten einde HM Timber se huidige verspreidingsprobleme aan te spreek. ‘n Studie van die literatuur gee ‘n opsomming van die nuutste tendense in die bestuur van moderne verskaffingskettings. Die fokus is dus op samewerking en om gesamentlik strategieë vir die verskaffingsketting te ontwikkel. Die literatuurstudie eindig met ‘n opsomming van die mees belangrike aspekte in die effektiewe en doeltreffende bestuur van verspreidingsentrums. Ontleding van HM Timber se logistieke aktiwiteite toon dat verskeie faktore verantwoordelik is vir die maatskappy se vervoerprobleme tydens April/Mei en November/Desember. Dit sluit in die betaling van nie-markverwante tariewe, laaiprobleme by die meulens, ‘n tekort aan koördinasie en die feit dat HM Timber nie ‘n kontrak met enige vervoermaatskappy het nie. Abstract:
The Office of the Inspector General in the Department of Justice reported cases of government contracting employees accepting bribes totaling over $540 million within a 6-year period. The purpose of this case study was to explore the perceptions of government contracting managers regarding the knowledge needed to mitigate employees' unethical behaviors when administering government contracts. Previous studies on government contracting employees' unethical behaviors focused on employees' behaviors, but lacked data concerning managers' roles in mitigating employees' unethical behaviors. The study's conceptual framework was stakeholder theory. The data were gathered through semistructured interviews conducted with 21 government contracting managers in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States and from company documents. Data from the semistructured interviews and company documents were analyzed, coded, and then grouped into categories using a modified content analysis technique. Key themes suggested that to mitigate government contracting employees' unethical behaviors, these government contracting managers required continued training. These managers also found trust to be vital to dissiminating ethical requirements to employees, and they also reported benefits to conducting ethical government contracting. Member checking of participants' responses strengthened credibility and trustworthiness of these interpretations. Findings and recommendations from this study may contribute to positive social change by improving training and ethical standards in government contracting, which could lead to enhancing societal trust in government contracting organizations.

The storage and distribution of goods in warehouses have been around for centuries. Information systems and technology have enabled business to run various different functions, like accounting, successfully. Companies soon realised the additional benefits technology can bring to their operations. Increase in product throughput and increase in product range are some of the examples that add additional complexity to the warehousing and distribution functions. In order to cater for the additional complexity, to gain improved customer service levels and gain a strategic advantage in delivering the right product, in the right place at the right time, companies are implementing warehouse management systems (WMS). However, the WMS implementations are complex and involve various different stakeholders. Failed WMS implementations can negatively affect the operations. There are many risks associated with the WMS implementations and many companies have had to issue profit warnings in the past due to failed implementations. Various viewpoints on project success exist but this research report has aimed to provide a framework of key success criteria which organisations can use to evaluate the success of their implementation. Since WMS are generally rolled-out across various sites within a specific supply chain, measuring and evaluating the success of the first project can guide the project team to achieve more project success in the future, eliminating the risks associated with failed implementations. This study clearly defines the difference between project success, project management success, critical success factors and key success criteria. Literature on the topic is limited and therefore this study looked at various sources like peer-reviewed literature, popular literature and case studies. The findings of the report indicate that there is a list of ten different key success criteria which organisations can focus on in order to measure and improve their project success. Taking ownership, change management, managing stakeholder expectations, communication, training and testing are some of the key success criteria that were identified. This study concludes by presenting a framework which organisations can use to measure the success of their WMS implementation.
