Abstract:
Chinese businesses began with a weak foundation in the intense world trade environment, similar to the many other companies that grew from developing countries. How were these Chinese businesses able to compete with foreign competitors armed with strong capital structures and efficient communication networks? Haier is an excellent example of how Chinese companies have successfully adapted to and prospered in the global economy, using information technology as a strategic weapon to improve its competitive advantage and further to create collaborative advantage. Haier's growth is miraculous: in less than two decades, it grew from a state-owned refrigerator factory into an innovative international giant. The company has become China's first global brand and the fifth largest appliance seller in the world. What are the secrets of Haier's success? Many researchers have conducted extensive studies on Haier's management and found the key is Management Information Systems such as e-Commerce and logistics systems that improve business operations between its suppliers, customers, and business partners. This article recounts the journey of Haier's achievements to excellence through its MIS, and provides analyses of the company's business model, the market chain management model.

Abstract:
Purpose Increased competition and access to information are forcing companies to provide quality to their products and services, aligned with a growing society pressure for less harmful environmental practices. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the adoption of reverse logistics (RL) may contribute to the generation of competitive advantage and improved quality in a part substitution process of a household appliance company. Design/methodology/approach This paper carried out a single case study in a household appliance company. The study collected data through semi-structured interviews in addition to document analysis and observation. Findings The implemented practices enhanced service maintenance and customer services and provided a more effective monitoring of defective parts. Moreover, such practices reduced unnecessary part substitutions, consumer dissatisfaction and undesired disposal in the environment. RL in the studied company has offered a potential contribution to the company quality strategies by providing more part returns, assuring cost savings, and reducing time to solve field problems. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to a single case study. Thus, the study findings are not subject to generalization for other similar organizations. Originality/value This paper is one of the few studies on RL in a household company in the context of an emerging economy. Such feature denotes in a singular scenario in RL investigations about recovering defective parts.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a set of logistics activities for each key supply chain business process of the Global Supply Chain Forum (GSCF) model and a conceptual framework to guide their implementation. Design/methodology/approach – A literature review on supply chain management (SCM) and logistics was conducted to integrate the existing knowledge of SCM, key business processes, and logistics; the latter is critical element for the success of SCM. A set of logistics activities and a conceptual framework are presented to guide their implementation in each of the key business process of the GSCF model. Three case studies were conducted in Brazilian food companies to verify the applicability of the proposed logistics activities, their characterization, and the conceptual framework. Findings – The logistics activities, the key business processes, and the steps to their implementation are integrated into a comprehensive framework. A total of 24 logistics activities and a conceptual framework to guide their implementation for each key business process of the GSCF model were proposed focussing on competitive advantage in a supply chain environment. Originality/value – The need for and the benefits derived from the involvement of the logistics in the key business processes of SCM have been reported in the literature, but the logistics activities in these processes and the way they were implemented have not yet been identified. According to Eisenhardt and Graebner (2007), building theory from case studies is an increasingly popular and relevant research strategy that involves using one or more cases to create theoretical constructs, propositions, and/or midrange theory from case-based empirical evidence. Therefore, the research gap to be filled with this manuscript is: “How does the involvement of the logistics area in the key business processes of the GSCF model occur?” The research question of the present study is: “Which activities are performed by the logistics area in the key business processes of the GSCF model and how to implement them?”. This study bridged the research gap and answered the research question by creating a theoretical construct through a conceptual framework to guide the implementation of the logistics activities for each key business process of the GSCF model. This paper aimed to extend the existing theory since the available literature has yet not addressed this research question at all.

Abstract:
Purpose There is significant potential for adding value by involving customer in the design process and delivery of logistic services. In order to add value to the overall logistic system, the purpose of this paper is to apply an integrated systems approach for the design of forward and reverse logistics services in order to build a self-organising service that can maximise efficiencies and in particular reduce reverse logistics costs. Design/methodology/approach Two exploratory case studies were conducted in the logistics systems of housing repair and maintenance sector in the UK. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, observations, and documented evidence. Findings The findings of the cross-case analysis suggests that systems approach expressed as the Vanguard Method (Seddon, 2008) has a direct impact on enhancing forward logistics performance and reducing reverse product flows by nourishing three dimensions for learning from demand-driven analysis; capturing customer clean information, demand predictability and categorisation, and failure demand analysis. Research limitations/implications Findings from exploratory case studies cannot be easily generalised. Hence, further case studies are needed to enrich the findings, and to facilitate their industrial applications. Further, the paper explores the utilisation of the Vanguard Method only in the area of housing repairs and maintenance logistics services. It would be valuable for future studies to further investigate the utilisation of the Vanguard Method in other logistics services settings. Originality/value The paper demonstrates an important dynamics of how logistics services can incorporate customer demands into the logistics design process.

Motivated by concerns about the impact of trade and customs procedures upon humanitarian logistic operations, this article seeks to open a new chapter in the relevant literature. It builds on three case studies, each of which is a household name within the humanitarian space and has been developed with the support of key informants in those organizations. The analysis of the case studies shows how customs considerations impact upon the entire relief chain. A review of relevant literature and documents provides the necessary context. A list of recommendations, which have been identified in consultation with research participants and are based on established ideas in contemporary trade facilitation policy, is offered. Further dialogue between customs and humanitarian logistics practitioners is keenly encouraged.

Abstract:
Additive manufacturing of spare parts significantly impacts industrial, social, and environmental aspects. However, a literature review shows that: (i) academic papers on the adoption of additive manufacturing have focused mainly on large companies; (ii) the methods required by SMEs to adopt new technologies differ from those employed by large companies; and (iii) recent studies suggest that a suitable way to help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt new additive manufacturing technologies from the academic world is by presenting case studies in which SMEs are involved. Given the increasing number of global SMEs (i.e., SMEs that manufacture locally and sell globally), we claim that these companies need to be assisted in adopting spare-parts additive manufacturing for the sake of resource and environmental sustainability. To bridge this gap, the purpose of this article is to present a case study approach that shows how a digital supply chain for spare parts has the potential to bring about changes in business models with significant benefits for both global SMEs (more effective logistic management), customers (response time), and the environment (reduced energy, emissions, raw materials, and waste).

Abstract:
This article is based on two studies, partly financed by the Norwegian Research Council. The first study was carried out in six organizations cooperating in two supply chain alliances. The purpose of this study was to develop a set of hypotheses concerning logistics service providers and their roles in supply chain alliances. The second study, involved interviews carried out in 12 different logistics organizations, and concerned their perception of future trends and future position. The purpose of this article is to highlight and to describe some of the major findings in the two studies on growth strategies for logistics service providers. We propose a matrix categorizing the players and their strategic position. Given the pressures in the industry and the individual strategic position, the strategic choices in fact are limited, leading to some dominating strategic directions that to a certain extent, also explain the structural changes in the industry.

Abstract:
The choice of proper logistics provider can be complex and might influence the success of manufacturing company. The complexity of decision can be caused by the numerous crite-ria for the selection of logistics provider. The great number of studies are discussing and presenting suggestions on logistics providers‟ selection models mostly in following streams: strategic decision making in organizations, industrial buying behavior, transportation pur-chasing, logistics suppliers‟ selection, and logistics relationships. The need for efficient pro-vider‟s selection and important criteria evaluation is causing the purpose of this paper. After the solid analysis of the theories discussed in the literature the author of this thesis is purposing the development of the hybrid model of logistics provider selection framework and finalizing with the model adapted for the case company. The issues regarding relation-ship with logistics provider and important selection criteria are questioned in this research as well. The inductive research approach is applied in this thesis. The selected qualitative study is the most suitable method regarding the problem and purpose of the study and provides for better understanding of the opinions and perceptions of the interviewed participants re-garding the frameworks of selecting logistics providers, also the process of relationship formation and coordination. Moreover, quantifying method processed through question-naires while evaluating the wide range of selection criteria related to this process is per-formed. Single case study as the research strategy is chosen, thus data is collected from six interviews conducted at six different logistics departments of the company. The main conclusions after the analysis of the covered literature and received data are re-sulting in the advice for practical implementation of the discussed model in the company‟s current procedures. The process basically includes need identification, documentation for RFQ process preparation and distribution to perspective logistics providers, results‟ analy-sis and meetings during the selection process, trial time in some cases, then final decision. The adapted model of the selection process which can be used in Fläktwoods can assist manufacturing companies having similar needs and requirements in transportation terms. The strategies in relationships‟ with logistics providers handling do not require much atten-tion in the company as its long-term relationship with main logistics services provider is re-sulting in a higher level of competitive attainment, also shorter one-year contracts benefit the company in terms of flexibility and price competition. Regardless the type of relation-ship, perceived trust, equity, and commitment are highly valuable in the company, therefore the success of the current relationship is further depending on strategic evaluation. The fu-ture study can be inspired for multiply case study, also for broader empirical investigation within the company.

Abstract:

The negative environmental impacts of transportation have gained wide recognition and are at the core of issues of sustainability, especially in urban areas (Rodrigue, Slack & Comtois, 2001). Many prior researches have been carried out on negative impact of transportation on environment. To minimize and to mitigate environmental concerns, green logistics and green transportation has been introduced in recent time. Logistics companies are becoming more flexible and slowly started moving towards green implementation. Implementation of this new strategy has definite challenges for logistics companies. In order to understand environmental  problems caused by  freight transportation and its challenges associated with green implementation, the aspect of greenness and its challenges were examined especially on the case of Bring Logistics. In this thesis, various modes of transportation and their environmental problems were discussed, city traffic and its consequences, implementation challenges, use of models, etc

The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

To fulfill the purpose of this work, a qualitative research method was used with an inductive approach chosen for methodology. Materials were collected both primary and secondary sources and three types of interview were conducted i.e. face-face interview, interview through email and by phone. Eight interviews were conducted involving seven personalities from Bring Logistics Jönköping, Sweden.

In conclusion, a logistical structural changes were implemented as a model in order for the company to be successful in their green implementation. The problems caused by freight transportation were noise, air pollution and climate change. The challenges of green implementation were identified as financial, employees inflexibility, distribution delay, taxation and fuel pricing.

The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

Sarantopoulos, Panagiotis. "Building Interdisciplinary Approaches within Management : The Case of Quality and Logistics." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Engineering, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-12171.

Full text
Abstract:

This research attempt, as its title witnesses, aims to build interdisciplinary approaches and to bridge gaps within management. Management and more specific, management of industrial organizations is a scientific discipline that consists of many different fields of interest. In industrial organizations, different parties of people, such as managers, engineers and workers are asked to communicate and collaborate towards common organizational targets and goals. This is were this research finds fertile ground, and tries to bridge the gaps between the quality management philosophy and corporate culture and the evolving, value adding functions and processes of logistics.

In particular, the gaps between quality management and logistics were bridged by a demonstration of the applicability of quality management practices –tools and methodologies- in a logistics context. This was conducted by an extensive exploratory research by means literature analysis of both management disciplines. The present situation, put in academic literature, was investigated and thoughtful reflections and suggestions for further use of quality management practices within logistics were provided.

All the quality management tools and methodologies examined were found, with one or another way, to be employed in logistics processes. Numerous examples demonstrating the universality of quality management concepts and techniques were identified. When it comes to the specific management area of logistics, eight quality management practices were found particularly useful, with three of them, namely Service Quality, SPC and Benchmarking to be well known, and to some extent, mature within logistics. However, empirical research, of qualitative and quantitative nature, is needed to confirm the trends recognized here.

The suggestions and reflections provided throughout this work indicate actions to be taken by logistics managers, in order to apply well known and widely accepted, cost saving and quality improvement, practices to their operations. In addition, these suggestions and their potential, constitute a challenging field for further research were new, applicable to logistics, quality management tools and methodologies can be found and ones that already exist can be enhanced.

The originality of this work can be found in that it thesis tries to bring conceptually closer two management areas that although have many values in common are not perceived as working on the same track, towards the same goals. This research adds value in the way that illustrates, in an extensive and formal way, that there should be no barriers within management.

Problem discussion:

Information Logistics has with the rising of the new technologies developed into a key is-sue for companies seeking competitive advantage. The birth and expansion of Internet has brought down the boundaries that kept business partners from sharing extensive informa-tion between each other (McClelland, 2003). The increase of information has yielded a bet-ter understanding of your business partners and one could perhaps think that it is only positive outcomes derived from the increased information sharing. However, research show upon an extensive need for structuring the information flows which relates to an or-ganization. Gartner group (2003) presented an investigation present ting that managers spend over 49 minutes every day in their mailbox for reading and sending e-mails and Del-phi Group (2002) presented figures saying that executives spend over two hours a day searching for the right information (cited in Sandkuhl, 2005). Expected outcomes for im-proving the information logistics are however not only related to time savings activities, business partners could also expect enhanced improvement regarding business processes and operational efficiency. The need for structuring the information flow is therefore an in-teresting subject to investigate and will also be the focus of this thesis. For specifying and narrowing the theoretical framework the authors have chosen to focus upon information sharing based on a web-based system. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how a company can utilize a web-based system to share information with their first tier suppliers.

Methodology: In order to fulfil the purpose a case study approach has been chosen whereas semi-structured telephone interviews have been complimented with face-to-face interviews for gathering material. The rationale for the chosen approach was because the information needed to fulfil the purpose was of the character to be found in a qualitative study by going in-depth into the field.

Conclusion:

The importance in utilizing a web-based system is for the buyer to facilitate user handiness and provide trustworthy information to suppliers. The shared information has to be cor-rect, easy accessible, and customized for suppliers. Information requested by the suppliers are, updated inventory levels, lead-time from Husqvarna to end customer, back orders, or-der fulfillment, on-time deliveries, complete orders, forecasts, and sell-through information.

Abstract:

Problem discussion: According to Coyle, Bardi, & Langley Jr., 2003, companies have always struggled in dealing properly with its outbound- to- customer logistics side, given the importance of such. In this case specifically, the investigation of the functions and processes employed by the Order Management department within Ericsson’s Chinese operations was the starting point for understanding what are the relevant problems existing; the reasons, probable impacts, possible opportunities for improvement as well as suggestions in doing so. Based on such premises, the authors have gone through these “challenges” to try to understand how in the case of Ericsson the company have or is dealing with such issues.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to provide a general overview of the department’s existing processes, functions, detected problems and finally suggestions for improvements toward such problems.

Research Method: The Case Study approach was chosen by the authors given the characteristics of this study in pursuing the objectives stated, emphasized by the fact that the authors observed the current situation within an Ericsson’s department and the company’s perceptions. Coupled with this, the qualitative methods combined with a small portion of quantitative perspective have been used in order to provide the necessary research structure, followed by questionnaires and an interview as secondary data.

Conclusion: The conducted research was able to detect that within the department the two most relevant problems considering the employees’ and manager’s perspective is related consequently to the ERP system currently employed and inexperience by the department’s personnel in conducting their tasks. Further the authors point out suggestions for improving such issues.

Abstract:

Background: Today also smaller companies (SME) are implementing enterprise resource planning systems. One difference is that the SME have smaller resources regarding people and finance which can cause some problems if they are not aware of this. The company we have studied have undergone an organizational change and simultaneously implemented an ERP. Two parts of the implementation of the ERP worked just as intended and the third and last part experienced some major difficulties.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the situation in which a small company undertake two major changes almost simultaneously, one of which is the implementation of an ERP. This matter when an SME is implementing an ERP is not well researched since it is only in the more recent years that this type of organization feel the need for it and therefore have ventured into this. The aim of this thesis is to add to the theoretical field of small organizations introducing enterprise information systems.

Method: This is a qualitative study conducted in the form of a case study. The main data sources have been semi structured interviews, combined with observations and a document study. The data have been analyzed inductively.

Conclusion: The implementation of this ERP has gone bad in one area due to several cooperating mistakes. SME’s have some circumstances that does not apply to the larger organizations. In a SME every person carries greater importance in the success or failure of the implementation. Preparation is equally important in an SME as in larger organizations.

Suggestions for further research: The field of ERP in SME's have not been very thoroughly studied since it is a comparatively new field. Further research in this matter would be of some value.

Abstract:
The entire world is facing with the impact and consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic, what is reflected in various spheres of social life. In the conditions of the crisis management, companies are forced to adapt to the new situation in order to survive on the market. Sales companies have had to make changes in their former business; namely in their organization, logistics, retail supply channels that are now oriented towards the online sales without contact when delivering to customers. The Civil Protection Headquarters of the Republic of Croatia has brought a Decision by which are regulated the working hours and the method of work in the trade business during the Coronavirus epidemic, according to which it is obligatory for all stores to organize their work in compliance with general anti-epidemic measures and special recommendations of the Croatian Institute of Public Health. In the paper are listed and analyzed changes in the sales operations of the two companies due to the pandemic crisis; one company deals with the sale of agricultural machinery and the other with the sale of food products.

Abstract:
Contemporary third party logistics (3PL) companies tend to broaden their competences in different fields and apart from traditional logistics services provide various value-added services to their customers. An inductive analysis of 3PL related literature is required, in order to define possible directions for development of contemporary 3PL companies. The purpose of this paper is, foremost, to discover contemporary tendencies of 3PL activities through investigation of literature. Second, to systematically classify 3PL activities discussed in scientific literature. Third, discover areas that require further development. The paper is based on systematic review and classification of articles related to 3PL activities that were published in scientific journals and databases. This paper is organized as follows. First part contains quantitative analysis of literature and description of authors’ developed directions of 3PL activities. Subsequent sections contain qualitative review of modern 3PL tendencies by each of pre-defined areas. Last section aims at providing conclusions and suggestions for further research. The key findings are following. Majority of studies of 3PL activities are based on particular business case or survey that does not allow to make conclusion about industry in general. Main emphasis in contemporary research is done on knowledge-based services. It is agreed that core logistics services are tended to be replaced by value-added services.

Abstract:
The Corona crisis led to a variety of challenges in the logistics sector due to volatile demand and changes in demand behavior, as well as strong cost increases. In this respect, there is increasing pressure to reduce these costs in the future through innovative solutions. For road freight transport, the question arises as to whether alternative drives can achieve the goal of cost reductions and also have positive effects on climate protection. Logistics service providers are therefore not only faced with the problem of selecting a specific technology (e.g. Battery Electric Vehicles or Fuel Cell Vehicles) but above all with the problem of economic efficiency and evaluation of climate impacts. The aim of this project is to support the selection of alternative drives in corporate practice with a pragmatic practical approach. The Excel-based tool is characterized by the use of a direct costing based approach with fixed and variable costs as well as the structured collection of basic data (e.g. energy prices) and sample vehicle data for comparisons. As initial results of the case studies conducted shows, it can be stated that there are already use cases in which an alternative drive offers economic advantages over conventional combustion engine vehicles.

"Environomics Framework for Sustainable Business Practices: Industrial Case Studies on True Impact Reduction and Process Optimization Through AI." In SPE Symposium: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Shape the Future of the Energy Industry. SPE, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/214459-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significant potential to optimize practices, processes, and energy consumption along with maximizing yield, quality, and uptime. This has substantial impact on putting organizations on the path to net-zero, as such optimizations can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% with minimal capital investments. This comprehensive study presents proven industrial case studies that delivered economically strong strategies coupled with sustainability practice and providing strategic insights to identify, manage and/or attenuate the associated impacts. Environomics presented in this study is a novel framework which deals with unifying economic strategies with sustainability practices (through artificial intelligence) for optimal business performance in terms of finances but also environmental impact. This is achieved through a track, trace, and optimize approach for resources (particularly emissions, energy, water, waste, materials,, and safety) This was achieved through a combination of AI methods such as unsupervised machine learning, multi-variate optimization, and the implementation of similarity measures. A few of the inputs included well data (including production data, drilling data, completion data etc.), logistics/supply chain data (scheduling data, production inventory, mobilization data etc.), safety data (near-miss, observations, hazards, disciplines and insights etc.) with associated costs and emission data. Multiple industrial case studies are presented where sustainability metrics are identified through validated AI models to optimize productivity while reducing emissions and inventory. For instance, well profiling can be used to identify historical parameters that have maximized production potential while optimizing for aspects such as cost or emissions. Furthermore, we can identify the optimal completion parameters for a new well which satisfies carbon targets, use well profiles to build an optimized drilling schedule that meets budget or production criteria while still achieving production targets and optimizing drilling rig routes. Thus, the approach can quickly (within run time) solve interrelated environomic challenges in the reservoir studies space and the field development space. Further case studies indicate that the supply chain can have immense optimization impact on scope 3 aspects with results indicating 30-50% asset utilization improvement with respect to fleets (Vessel, Truck, Rigs). With respect to materials, a 10-20% reduction of material inventory levels all improved through AI. As the workforce are also part of the environment it has been observed that identifying unsafe behaviors within a large operation, also leads to enhanced sustainability behaviors. The models indicate potential of overall emission reduction ranging from 12-20%. This led to the comprehensive framework presented in this study to support sustainable practices that are also economically feasible and deployable. The real-time sustainability metrics generated has immense values in terms of decision-making processes and scenario generation in a fraction of the time that is required using traditional approaches. In addition to assessing the scope of impact, a novel multidisciplinary study and framework is presented to analyze environomic strategies to propose a market-oriented approach through the application of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, industrial, and academic case studies have been evaluated to identify, predict, and optimize the crucial parameters within such workflows that are effective in reducing resources utilized and associated emissions.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the early nineteenth century, cacao has been an important export earner for Ecuador. Today the importance of this sector remains, as Ecuador is the main producer and exporter of Fine and Flavor cacao worldwide. Motivated by the main transformations of the global food systems and the increasing demand for multidimensional credence attributes, this study examines the present state of Ecuador's cacao industry, identifies areas of opportunity, and discusses how the private and public sectors can work together to meet existing and emerging challenges. Findings are supported by interviews conducted with the principal actors in the Ecuadorian cacao industry and two case studies. The first case study focuses on how associativity can help cacao farmers producing high-quality beans to differentiate themselves and succeed in modern agri-food markets. The second case study explores the success of a local chocolate firm and its links with local cacao farmers. Findings suggest that market trends have created new business opportunities for cacao producers and chocolate processors. These opportunities are most open to firms who can personalize and differentiate their products, for example, through the use of quality certifications such as organic, fair trade, reduced carbon load, etc. More importantly, market developments are driving exporters to enhance the performance of cacao value chains in the country, but the sector requires coordination to capture reputation and credence-based demands for the local cacao.

Abstract:
This publication presents six case studies of public policies that promote the development and use of geospatial technologies and applications, which can be categorized in five layers: institutions, tools, data, skills and industry. The evolution of these technologies and applications over the past decade has been driven by the understanding that where people and things are located is central to smart decision making. As a result of low-cost launch vehicles, increasing numbers of satellites in orbit, new sensor technologies, machine learning algorithms, advances in cloud computing, and the emergence of other technologies such as drones and high-altitude platforms, the geospatial economy is now expanding into many new geographies and sectors. This expansion calls for the development of innovative applications that benefit government in areas such as agriculture, environment, energy, aviation, maritime, transport, health, education, business, and society.

Synthesis Study of Best Practices for Mapping and Coordinating Detours for Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and Risk Assessment for Duration of Traffic Control Activities. Full text
Abstract:
Maintenance of traffic (MOT) during construction periods is critical to the success of project delivery and the overall mission of transportation agencies. MOT plans may include full road closures and coordination of detours near construction areas. Various state DOTs have designed their own manuals for detour mapping and coordination. However, very limited information is provided to select optimal detour routes. Moreover, closures or detours should provide not only measurable consequences, such as vehicle operating costs and added travel time, but also various unforeseen qualitative impacts, such as business impacts and inconvenience to local communities. Since the qualitative aspects are not easily measurable they tend to be neglected in systematic evaluations and decision-making processes. In this study, the current practices obtained based on an extensive literature review, a nation-wide survey, as well as a series of interviews with INDOT and other state DOTs are leveraged to (1) identify a comprehensive set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for detour route mapping, (2) understand how other state DOTs address the qualitative criteria, (3) identify how the involved risks during the planning, service time, and closure of the detour routes are managed, and (4) recommend process improvements for INDOT detour mapping guidelines. As demonstrated by two sample case studies, the proposed KPIs can be taken as a basis for developing a decision-support tool that enables decision-makers to consider both qualitative and quantitative aspects for optimal detour route mapping. In addition, the current INDOT detour policy can be updated based on the proposed process improvements.
