Kang, Jian. "Automating business intelligence recovery in software evolution." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/2414.

Abstract:
The theme of this thesis is to pave a path to vertically extract business intelligence (BI) from software code to business intelligence base, which is a tank of BI. Business intelligence is the atomic unit to build a piece of program comprehensibility in business logic point of view. It outstands because it covers all reverse engineering levels from code to specification. It refers to technologies for the localisation, extraction, analysis of business intelligence in software system. Such an approach naturally requires information transformation from software system to business intelligence base, and hence a novel set of automatic business intelligence recovery methods are needed. After a brief introduction of major issues covered by this thesis, the state of art of the area coined by the author as “business intelligence elicitation from software system”, in particular, the kinds of business intelligence that can be elicited from software system and their corresponding reverse engineering technical solutions are presented. Several new techniques are invented to pave the way towards realising this approach and make it light-weight. In particular, a programming-style-based method is proposed to partition a source program into business intelligence oriented program modules; concept recovery rules are defined to recover business intelligence concepts from the names embedded in a program module; formal concept analysis is built to model the recovered business intelligence and present business logic. The future research of this task is viewed as “automating business intelligence accumulation in Web” which is defined to bridge work in this thesis to nowadays Web computing trends. A prototype tool for recovering business intelligence from a Web-based mobile retailing system is then presented, followed by case study giving evaluation on the approach in different aspects. Finally, conclusions are drawn. Original contributions of this research work to the field of software reverse engineering are made explicit and future opportunities are explored.

Abstract:

Modern companies operate in incredibly complex and dynamic environments. This is clearly characterized by constant changes in technology and in various market forces as well as by enormous amounts of data and information that need to be gathered and analyzed every day. Governmental regulations and ongoing competitor pressures, among other external and internal factors, are issues that managers and decision makers in a company must take into a consideration when making decisions. The need for BI systems is growing stronger and businesses in various industries demand such tools that will help them stay on the edge in order to be competitive. Hence the purpose of this paper is to find out what their companies desire when choosing a BI system to work with. What are their needs and what do they expect and understand from this technological system that will hopefully make them work easier and gain their knowledge about the business they operate in.

A web questionnaire is aimed at 67 Swedish companies from various industries and the answers have been summarized and analyzed in different cross tables for comparison reasons. Respondents from the Manufacturing industry were those with the highest response rate. A model called The PET-model of BI implementation was created, as a result of the theoretical findings, and this model is used to finalize the results and the conclusions of this paper.

Abstract:

The area of Business Intelligence (BI) is both broad and multifaceted and is becoming an increasingly pervasive tool utilized within organizations allowing them to gain greater insight into their business operations as well as well as the way in which their customers interact with them. By enabling businesses to perform powerful, effective analytics and reporting, BI tools allow them to maximize use of their data and facilitate better planning, forecasting and the ability to have a more targeted and efficient value chain. Usage of BI tools allow organizations to not only achieve but leverage their competitive advantage. SMEs are no different in their pursuit for competitive advantage and market share but often is the case that they lack the resources in order to make the substantial investments into the software and infrastructure required to host a solution on-premise. The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model of allowing users to have access to powerful tools and services without having to purchase the solutions or the infrastructure needed to host it on-premise allows SMEs an ideal opportunity to perform many or all of the functionalities that on-premise BI provides. SaaS BI is a relatively new concept only a few years old, but improvements in functionality and features, reliability of service levels and lower costs are allowing it to gain traction and it is projected to increase its momentum in the next few years. The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors that lead to adoption/non-adoption, assigned importance and perceived business value of SaaS BI within SMEs. These issues will be addressed through identification of the key decision criteria that influence SMEs to adopt SaaS BI solutions over an on-premise solution and vice versa. Greater insight into the decision making process, usage and value will be investigated with the cooperation of two vendors within the BI field. A two pronged approach targeting both SaaS and on-premise BI vendors and the users is adopted in order to find out the perspective on either end and whether or not they are incongruent. Semi-structured interviews were targeted at both an on-premise vendor and a SaaS vendor and their customers. A questionnaire was deployed to clients of both these vendors. Analysis was then conducted on the findings using an integrated selection model encompassing BI and SaaS theories and concepts outlined in the paper.

In today's world, as the volume of business and consumer data continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, there is increasing desire to utilize that data in new and innovative and ways to provide insight and improve decision making. For businesses, data is being generated from transactions, machine logs, digital media and feeds from sensors and wireless devices at a volume and velocity not seen before. When combined with data from external sources such as partners, or from the Internet from blogs, social networking sites, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, it has the capability to provide organizations with new insight, a more holistic picture of customer and stakeholder behavior and new ways of gaining competitive advantage. Consumers are being presented with applications of increasing analytical sophistication, leading to growing comfort in making fact-based decisions. New devices will help monitor energy usage within the home and provide insight on the optimal times to schedule devices and run household appliances. As data volumes continue to grow, systems will need to automate the uncovering of patterns and trends in data if they are to scale. Business Intelligence (BI) software, which has traditionally been used to gain insight from data, will need to evolve and new capabilities developed to support these significant changes. Areas of growth and opportunities for new innovation within the BI software industry will be explored that will enable stakeholders to take full advantage of this new and exciting opportunity.

Gina, Bonginkosi Phila. "Factors That Drive the Selection of Business Intelligence Tools in South African Financial Services Providers." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33741.

Full text
Abstract:
Innovation and technology advancements in information systems (IS) result in multiple product offerings and business intelligence (BI) software tools in the market to implement business intelligence systems (BIS). As a result, a high proportion of organisations fail to employ appropriate and suitable software tools meeting organisational needs, resulting in a prime number of BI solution failures and abandoned projects are therefore recorded. Due to such project failures, benefits associated with BI are not realised hence organisations loose enormous investments on BI solutions and competitive advantage. The study aims at discovering and exploring critical factors influencing the selection of BI tools when embarking on the selection process. This is a quantitative research study and questionnaire surveyed data was collected from 92 participants working in South African financial services providers listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) appearing in the top 100 based on market capitalization. The data was analysed quantitative by employing the use of SPSS and SmartPLS-3 software's to test the significance of influential factors using the proposed conceptual model that emerged from the literature. The findings showed that a combination of domain technical and non-technical factors is critical. Therefore, software tool technical factors (functionality, ease of use, compatibility, availability of an integrated hardware/software package, and availability of source code), vendor technical factors (availability of technical support, technical skills, quality of product, availability of user manual for important information, tutorial for learning and troubleshooting guide, and experience in using product developed by the same vendor), and opinion non-technical factors (end-users, subordinates, outside personnel acquaintances, and improvement in customer service) emerged as significant combination of influential factors to be considered. The study contributes to both academia and industry by providing influential determinants for software tool selection. It is hoped that the findings presented will contribute to a greater understanding of factors influencing the selection of BI tools to researchers and practitioners alike. Furthermore, organisations seeking to select and deliver appropriate BI tools will be better equipped to drive such endeavours.

Business Intelligence (BI) relies on Data Warehouse (DW), a historical data repository designed to support the decision making process. Despite the potential benefits of a DW, data quality issues prevent users from realizing the benefits of a BI environment and Data Analytics. Problems related to data quality can arise in any stage of the ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) process, especially in the loading phase. This thesis presents an approach to automate the selection and execution of previously identified test cases for loading procedures in BI environments and Data Analytics based on DW. To verify and validate the approach, a unit test framework was developed. The overall goal is achieve data quality improvement. The specific aim is reduce test effort and, consequently, promote test activities in DW process. The experimental evaluation was performed by two controlled experiments in the industry. The first one was carried out to investigate the adequacy of the proposed method for DW procedures development. The Second one was carried out to investigate the adequacy of the proposed method against a generic framework for DW procedures development. Both results showed that our approach clearly reduces test effort and coding errors during the testing phase in decision support environments.

"Implementace Business Intelligence ve firmě Haguess, a. s." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2010. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-72430.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is a pilot project of the implementation of the BI (Business Intelligence) solution in the company Haguess, a. s. The project is concerned with the analyses of data stored in a database -- DataBase Management System (DBMS) -- which is used as a data source by the web application Customer Support Center (CSC). Haguess primarily uses CSC as a helpdesk for its clients and partners, but also uses it for internal purposes. The main use of the CSC application is to support information systems delivered by Haguess. There were two motives for the choice of this subject: BI software tools had not previously been used by Haguess, and the company management was keen to get data analyses from the CSC application. That's why I decided to do these analyses. My goal was to create a practically useful solution which would be an incentive for Haguess to use BI software tools for other purposes. This thesis has two main goals. The first one is the realisation of the pilot BI solution, which would outline the possibilities for analysis of data from the CSC application using BI software tools. This involved the following activities: multidimensional analysis and BI solution design -- i.e. design of data pipelines, OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) cube/cubes, and user tools in MS Excel calculator. The second goal was to select the proper software tools for a future complex realisation and running of the BI solution. The first objective was achieved by doing the following: proper analysis of the CSC application data model, definition of user requests for output analysis and its comparison with the data model analysis. Based on this comparison, the basic subjects of output analyses were determined. These basic subjects were the starting point for the implementation of the BI solution. The second objective was achieved as follows: on the basis of the implementation results, basic demands (criteria) for BI software tools features were determined, bearing in mind the possible future complex realisation and running of a BI solution. Research determined which BI software tools were available on the market. The most suitable BI software tool was selected following a comparison of available options, and the criteria mentioned above. The primary outcome of this thesis is the creation of a practically usable BI solution.

Abstract:
In enterprises we find many complex processes consisting of several sub-processes and actors, each of them contributing to the end outcome. Teaching on complex processes is not easy if the aim is deep knowledge regarding the processes and how different activities and choices will affect the final outcomes. An example of a complex process is the Enterprise Recourse Planning (ERP) systems procurement. A lot of different business representatives are involved in the procurement project, each with their opinion on how the optimal solution looks like. These opinions are often conflicting and the demands too many to be included in the formal requirements specification. Sometimes the requirements are the same, but expressed in different terms. Definition and selection of requirements is one of many potential pitfalls of Information Technology (IT) procurement which is dealt with during a half day exercise in ERP procurement in the course “Integrated Business Solutions”. Through role playing the students experience the transformation of theories into practice by identifying, arguing for or against and thereafter agree upon a limited list of requirements. Another complex activity is the evaluation of alternatives, where the students first need to find suitable candidate systems and thereafter assess how well these satisfy the formulated requirements. The vendor web pages and an online search function provided by a consultant are used. This gives a good basis for discussions regarding assessment of information sources and how decision making is affected by available information. This article describes the purpose and implementation of the above mentioned exercise. The exercise serves as an exemplification of how to create active learning situations that provide hands-on experiences and puts the problem solving and analysis abilities in a real context. Different skills trained during the exercise are highlighted using the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) syllabus. The article also identifies pitfalls to be avoided when creating this kind of learning situations.

This work is to create a BI tool (Business Intelligence) available in the cloud (cloud computing) through SaaS (Software as Service) using ETL techniques (extract, transform, load) and Big Data technologies, with the intention of facilitating decentralized extraction and data processing in large quantities. Currently, it appears that it is practically impossible conduct a consistent analysis without the aid of a software for reporting and statistics. For these purposes, the achievement of concrete results with decision making requires data analysis strategies and consolidated variable. From this view, it is emphasized in this study Business Intelligence (BI) in order to simplify the analysis of management information and statistics to provide indicators through graphs or dynamic lists of data management. Thus, it is possible to infer that with the exponential growth of data becomes increasingly difficult to obtain results quickly and consistently, making it necessary to work with new techniques and tools for large-scale data processing. This work is technical in nature to create a product of Software Engineering, based from the study of art in the area, and a comparison with the main existing tools on the market, showing advantages and disadvantages of the created solution.

The domains of Business Intelligence (BI) and social media have meanwhile become significant research fields. While BI aims at supporting an organization’s decisions by providing relevant analytical data, social media is an emerging source of personal and individual knowledge, opinion, and attitudes of stakeholders. For a while, a convergence of the two domains can be observed in real-world implementations and research, resulting in concepts like social BI. Many research questions still remain open – or even worse – are not yet formulated. Therefore, the paper aims at articulating a research agenda for social BI. By means of a literature review we systematically explored previous work and developed a framework. It contrasts social media characteristics with BI design areas and is used to derive the social BI research agenda. Our results show that the integration of social media (data) into a BI system has impact on almost all BI design objects.

Business Intelligence (BI) relies on Data Warehouse (DW), a historical data repository designed to support the decision making process. Without an effective Data Warehouse, organizations cannot extract the data required for information analysis in time to enable more effective strategic, tactical, and operational insights. This thesis presents an approach and a Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool to increase efficiency and effectiveness of ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) programs creation and maintenance. Experiment evaluation of the approach is carried out in two controlled experiments that carefully evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of the tool in an industrial setting. The results indicate that our approach can indeed be used as method aimed at improving creation and maintenance of ETL processes.
Abstract:
Business Intelligence Systems are becoming more and more popular in recent years. It is caused by the need of reusing data in order to gain some potentially useful business information about. Those systems are advanced set of tools, which causes high prices of purchase and licensing. Therefore, it is important to choose the system which fits the best particular business needs. The aim of this thesis is to elaborate a method for comparison of existing Business Intelligence Systems that are supporting data mining. The method consist of a quality model, build according to existing standards, and set of steps which should be taken to choose a Business Intelligence System according to particular requirements of its future user. The first part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of existing works providing a way for comparison of those software products. It is shown here that there is no existing systematic approach resolving this problem. However, criteria presented in those works along with the description of quality model standards were used for creating the quality model and proposing a set of basic measures. Also the phrases for the evaluation process were identified. The next part of the research is a case study which purpose is to show the usefulness of proposed evaluation method. The example is simple, but has proven that the method can be easily modified for specific needs and used for comparison of real Business Intelligence Systems. The quality level measured in the case study turned out to be very similar for each system. The evaluation method may be extended in future work with more advanced measures or additional characteristic which were not taken into account in this research.

Abstract:

This praxis studies the effects on organizations of replacing US knowledge workers with artificial intelligence software (automation) and enhancing US knowledge workers with artificial intelligence software (augmentation). The effects on organizational innovation, resistance, and return on investment (ROI) are studied.

The main purpose of this study is to confirm the relationships between automation/augmentation, innovation, resistance, and ROI. This study is also meant to aid researchers, policy makers, executives, and others that have influence over automation and augmentation decisions. The implications of these decisions will reverberate through the multi-billion-dollar US job market in the coming years.

Quantitative methods were used to look at researched examples of both automation and augmentation. Data from 1993 to 2018 was gathered and assessed on innovation, resistance, and ROI from a number of different industries and a number of different types of firms based on size and ownership structure (public or private). Statistical methods were then used to compare the effects of automation and augmentation on organizations.

Research data was gathered to study the relationship between innovation and ROI, as well as the relationship between resistance and ROI. These relationships were used to combine ROI, innovation, and resistance using Monte Carlo simulations. This combination of ROI, innovation, and resistance was then used to compare the combined effects of automation and augmentation on organizations over time.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The industrial revolution may be viewed as the spark that triggered the escalating of competition among companies. Ever since the advent of mass production and the ensuing manufacturing of similar, if not, exactly the same products, by different manufacturers has lead to the increasing need to monitor the activities of competitors, customer‟s needs, and other matters related, in one way or another, to the competitive environment. The early 2000‟s witnessed the birth of innumerable models, later denominated intelligence methodologies, that target the monitoring of a company‟s external environment. Parallel to this, the growth of the Internet lead to greater amounts of information capable of providing deeper understanding of the state and events occurring in the competitive environments in which a company acts as a player Thus, given the diversity of intelligence methodologies and the availability of vast amounts information that can be used to track the competitive environment, it is impelling to assume that an adequate software technology could be of significant help in such a scenario. However, what functionalities or features should a software technology have to effectively support a competitive intelligence effort? This and other questions are dealt and are the object of this study. Through extensive bibliographic research in the area of business administration, and in-depth interviews of four experts and five acting professionals in intelligence, it was possible to identify key technology features and, as result of this study, present a proposal for a functional requirements check-list for a software capable of supporting such an important process carried out presently in major Brazilian organizations.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Technology: Information Technology in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
The alignment between business and information technology (IT) strategies has been a challenge for many years. Strategic alignment models and enterprise architecture methodologies and frameworks have been developed to assist business and IT managers with improving alignment between business and IT strategies. The business analyst, systems analyst and project manager are key role players in delivering the information systems (IS) needs of business and therefore key in aligning business and IT strategies. Despite literature and research suggesting a positive influence of emotional intelligence on occupational performance in various industries, the development of emotional intelligence of the business analyst, systems analyst and project manager is neglected by software development organisations. Emotional intelligence is neglected in industry IS competency models as well as documented standards for the business analysis and project management profession (BABOK and PMBOK). Emotional intelligence is not addressed in strategic alignment models and enterprise architecture methodologies and frameworks. Emotional intelligence is equally neglected in IS literature. Systematic research investigating the impact of emotional intelligence on occupational performance of IT professionals remains sparse. The purpose of this study was to determine which emotional intelligence competencies are needed to improve the occupational performance of business analysts, systems analysts and project managers in delivering business information system needs. The study took the form of a multiple interpretive case study. Qualitative data was collected using semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from 20 software development organisations utilising the roles of the business analyst, systems analyst and project manager. Quantitative data was collected using the Genos Emotional Intelligence Inventory with the aim of identifying the patterns of emotional intelligence visible in the sample of business analysts, systems analysts and project managers assessed. The study suggests emotional intelligence has a role to play in alignment between business and IT strategies. It is proposed that industry IS competency models as well as the standards for the business analysis and project management profession as documented in BABOK and PMBOK include specific emotional intelligence competencies. The study also proposes that higher education institutions in IT/IS such as universities of technology, as well as training providers focusing on business analysis, systems analysis and project management, should focus not only on technical skills but emotional intelligence skills as well when developing the supply pipeline of business analysts, systems analysts and project managers. Keywords: Emotional intelligence, business – IT alignment, information technology, enterprise architecture, business analyst, systems analyst, project manager, competencies, non-technical skills.

The current requirement of low latency processing for high volume of data streams is pushing the limits of the traditional data processing architectures. A new class of applications called Distributed Stream Processing Systems (DSPS) has emerged to facilitate such large scale real time data analytics. Nevertheless the diversity of architectures, data models and APIs introduced by the use of these systems resulted in a greater complexity to the development of data processing systems. In this context, a reference architecture to data stream processing for near real-time analytics is proposed in this work. This proposal is based on a layered architecture pattern, with clearly defined responsibilities providing a strong reference model, to improve the maintainability and reuse for data stream processing systems. In order to evaluate the proposed architecture and its framework, a case study is used in which two probabilistic algorithms are applied: the HyperLogLog and the Count-Min Sketch.

The construction of technological artifacts, in particular the construction of software which is included Business Intelligence systems, is predominantly conducted as an activity " purely " technical . If adopted this line of conduct , the professionals in the computing " fit to take care of the ' technical ' technological artifact" , and the others , ie , the "non - technical " disregarded or relegated to the background . However, in practice it is noticed that the construction of these devices takes place in a heterogeneous background, where we have positions of individual and institutional power, ideologies , political , technological and regulatory contexts , among others that allow or restrict the construction of these artifacts . In light of the ideas, especially Bruno Latour, this job search, taking the methodological approach of Actor-Network Theory , bring visibility to the numerous associations between diverse and heterogeneous elements ( human and nonhuman ) that configure provisionally due the varied interests that are involved in the scene , in the right place and time, during the construction of technological artifact. Also seeks to apply the concept of regime of information for identifying some elements of the local regime of information from the tracking of sociotechnical network in which the artifact studied is inserted.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Organizations use Business Intelligence (BI) systems to monitor how well they are meeting their goals and objectives. Yet, very often BI systems do not include clear models of the organization’s goals or of how to measure whether they are satisfied or not. Several researchers now attempt to integrate goal models into BI systems, but there are still major challenges related to how to get access to the BI data to populate the part of the goal model (often indicators) used to assess goal satisfaction. This thesis explores a new approach to integrate BI systems with goal models. In particular, it explores the integration of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence, a leading BI tool, with an Eclipse-based goal modeling tool named jUCMNav. jUCMNav is an open source graphical editor for the User Requirements Notation (URN), which includes the Use Case Map notation for scenarios and processes and the Goal-oriented Requirement Language for business objectives. URN was recently extended with the concept of Key Performance Indicator (KPI) to enable performance assessment and monitoring of business processes. In jUCMNav, KPIs are currently calculated or modified manually. The new integration proposed in this thesis maps these KPIs to report elements that are generated automatically by Cognos based on the model defined in jUCMNav at runtime, with minimum effort. We are using IBM Cognos Mashup Service, which includes web services that enable the retrieval of report elements at the most granular level. This transformation provides managers and analysts with useful goal-oriented and process-oriented monitoring views fed by just-in-time BI information. This new solution also automates retrieving data from Cognos servers, which helps reducing the high costs usually caused by the amount of manual work required otherwise. The novel approach presented in this thesis avoids manual report generation and minimizes any contract with respect to the location of manually created reports, hence leading to better usability and performance. The approach and its tool support are illustrated with an ongoing example, validated with a case study, and verified through testing.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the role of business intelligence tools (BI) in performance management activities within small to medium enterprises(SME). The purpose of this investigation is to align the features of BI tools with the performance management activities in a model that supports the roles of performance management in the targeted sector. The proposed model also considers the characteristics of SMEs by choosing the appropriate technologies to support the role of BI with regard to the limited capabilities of SMEs. In general, this research proposes a model that supports the adoption of BI tools to enhance decision making that improves performance management activities in SMEs. After identifying the influential sectors in the UK region, this investigation has targeted the wholesale industry because it is a major contributor to the national economy. In addition, the nature of the wholesale industry makes it more appropriate for the purpose of this research, to be able to generalise the results across the targeted sector. The purpose of this research is described through the research aims; these aims are 1) to encourage the use of BI tools to improve performance within the targeted sector, and 2).to remove the barriers facing wholesale SMEs when attempting to adopt BI tools. In course of this research, the accomplishment of these aims is described in a third aim, which is the principle aim of the research. This aim is to establish the basis for a new policy that encourages and promotes the adoption of BI tools in performance management activities, to enhance decision making that improves performance management within wholesale SMEs in the UK. The features of the proposed model incorporate the defined BI tools and the performance management activities with the factors that influence 1) the strengths and weaknesses of SMEs in general, 2) performance management in wholesale SMEs and 3) the adoption of BI tools. The proposed model was developed through a literature survey that identifies the critical success factors (CSFs) that influence the functions of the model, the performance management activities at the operational level of performance management, and the appropriate BI tools that enhance decision making to improve the performance management activities. The model is further validated using a quantitative questionnaire survey using to validate the model within wholesale SMEs in the UK. And finally, the practicality of the proposed model in real life situations is evaluated through an interview with a manager of a wholesale SME.

Abstract:
This study investigates different ways to use Microsoft SharePoint to publish data in the form of charts and tables from a software system as a part of a business intelligence effort. The purpose is to provide accurate and up-to-date statistics automatically on a corporate website instead of manually creating it. An application was developed to serve as middleware between the SharePoint server and the data source. Different options were analyzed, both client-side and server-side components. It was found that using the SharePoint .NET client API is an efficient way to achieve this goal, especially in an IT environment where development of SharePoint server-side components isn’t a viable option due to IT security concerns. The study describes a way to initiate a small-scale BI implementation without large budgets or firm commitments in the organization. It uses a web collaboration tool that is common in larger businesses and shows a way to interface in-house developed data sources. What SharePoint API to use was restricted from a IT security and stability standpoint in this thesis. This restriction is likely to apply also on other larger organizations where a similar initiative is driven from outside the IT department. It was found that automating the generation of production reports could save significant time compared to manually creating them.

Abstract:
Data warehousing is a new and emerging field. Projects tend to be complex and time consuming. Because of this complexity, teams tend to commit to more than they can deliver. This causes delayed delivery. Applying Agile development styles to data warehousing is one of the alternative methodologies that are being investigated to help teams to accelerate the delivery of business value. Scrum is one of the frameworks that falls within the Agile stream. Scrum focuses on project management and makes use of iterative and incremental development. It tries to deliver the smallest piece of business value the fastest. The paper evaluates the implementation of Scrum in a data warehouse team of a financial investment company. The researcher did an action research study on the team to see if Scrum can be used as a viable alternative framework to bring agility to Data Warehouse development. She examined the changes that the team experienced during and after the implementation of Scrum, focusing on team structure and roles within the teams. The researcher defined a framework to evaluate how well the team implemented Scrum. The researcher also evaluated the quality of work delivered, and the predictability and productivity of the team as metrics to see if Scrum made a difference within the team. The research paper examined why the implementation failed and what issues Scrum highlighted within the team as well as within the way that the company implemented it.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a feedback on the competitive intelligence device set up in Marseille Innovation to allow open source software editors housed in its business incubator, to effectively monitor their environment in order to detect new opportunities for development. This project is part of a comprehensive approach, led by Marseille Innovation and its partners to structure a network of open source companies in the PACA area (south of France).First, we achieved a state of the art of open source literature emphasizing the paradox posed by the open source model for software editors who choose to use free software licenses : the adoption of an open source model by some editors for their software allows a value creation that could be greater than that generated through traditional proprietary models, but this advantage is offset by a dangerous uncertainty as to the value capture, could be recovered by competitors who have yet made no programming effort to and not having incurred costs. Subsequently, we presented the birth of free software as the result of changes in the computer industry that marked the early '70s, changes which caused the passage of free software from non commercial/public sphere to commercial/private sphere. In response, defenders of free software have invented an original system of "public licenses" to protect these software’s against any technical or legal interlocking of their use, their distribution and their modification. However, if these public licenses allow to promote a value creation, through the cooperation of a community of programmers and software distribution, the randomness of remuneration in the open source model has led software editors to seek and invent new "Business Models" more or less random, to better ensure their income.Based on knowledge accumulated on the open source model, we have subsequently explained the approach initiated by Marseille Innovation, in collaboration with Marseille-Provence Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) and Libertis, to structure a network of open source companies in the PACA area. This approach led to the launch of several projects of mutual interest, including one on the setting-up of a monitoring device to monitor open source software industry. The approach adopted to setting-up this monitoring device consists in a first step to establish a state of the art of different theoretical approaches and practices identified in the information and communication sciences’ literature. Then, a pragmatic approach of monitoring has been chosen. Organizational means, processual and technical have been studied to set up this monitoring device. Raising awareness actions to competitive intelligence were also conducted with members of the network and open source startups coached by Marseille Innovation, through which information needs are identified and information products are developed to enable members of open source network to effectively monitor their environment. Bibliometric studies are also made to meet the expectations of open source companies on how to create and capture value in the open source software model, about promising market segments, software licenses and business models that result

The Electronic Commerce (E-commerce) grew very in recent years. This type of Commerce, call also digital or virtual commerce, is characterized for the increasing capacity of supply, global competition, increasing, with this, the expectations of the consumers, thus causing, one high competition between the companies, who very change of fast form the businesses and the way to operate. Being that, it can be perceived that the companies who will not be ready for the changes, in a short period had been it stops backwards in the world of the businesses. The Electronic Commerce allows that such changes can be supported in one it scales global, making possible a bigger efficiency and flexibility, this occurs by means of the agility in taking care of to the necessities and expectations of the customers. For this new paradigm, it currently starts if to legalize the business-oriented call Intelligence (Business Intelligence), whose purpose is to manage the knowledge in the age of the global competition and the communications on-line.
Abstract:
This research focuses on Big Data Facilitators, companies that can help to reduce the complexities of Big Data and offer the value residing in it. These types of companies are highly unexplored, thus the purpose of this research paper is to create an understanding of Big Data Facilitators by studying their drivers and barriers concerning Big Data application, and their general role in the business ecosystem. To answer the overarching purpose four research questions has been proposed: RQ1: What drivers are prominent for Big Data Facilitators concerning the application of Big Data Analytics? RQ2: What barriers are prominent for Big Data Facilitators regarding the application of Big Data? RQ3: What value do Big Data Facilitators offer for their customers? RQ4: What type of customer do Big Data Facilitators offer value to? To answer these questions two phases of research were conducted. Phase one consisted of interviews with 10 different Big Data Facilitators, with the primary focus of understanding their drivers and barriers. The second phase consisted of qualitative analysis of text on websites from 27 Big Data Facilitators, with the primary focus of understanding what value these companies offer and what general customer type they target. The study found that the primary drivers for these companies are Technology as an Enabler, Organisational Knowledge, Agile Organisational Structure and Innovative Foundation and the barriers are Finding Correct Expertise, Process Difficulties, Resource Restrictions and Security Issues. This resulted in the adapted force-field model which shows a weighted representation of these factors. The identified generalizable value being offered was found to be Improved Processes, Innovative Technology, Insight and Convenience. A model called the Four-dimensions model was created with the two phases as basis. It represents an aggregation of the primary factors of influence affecting Big Data Facilitators as well as the value that they offer and most importantly, how the parts interrelate. This thesis provides further depth to the research around Big Data and Big Data analytics, as well as insight in the highly unexplored topic of SMEs relationship with Big Data and Big Data analytics. This since the Big Data Facilitators at hand were either start–ups or small enterprises. Moreover, the research added insight into the almost non-existent research area of Big Data Facilitators and analytics vendors. The managerial implications suggest that companies should strive to, first create an environment for innovation to prosper and continuously strive for keeping an agile organisation structure, by ensuring flexibility, adaptive processes and short lines for data-driven decision making. Second, to create awareness and utilization of the tools and open source–software available during its rapid development. Third, create an attractive environment for managing organisation knowledge and attracting the right expertise needed to understand the complexities of Big Data and handle the abstract algorithms in machine learning and deep learning

Abstract:
The prevalence of medical misdiagnosis has remained high despite the adoption of diagnostic software. This ongoing controversy about the role of technology in mitigating the problem of misdiagnosis centers on the question of whether diagnostic software does reduce the incidence of misdiagnosis if properly relied upon by physicians. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study based on planned behavior theory was to measure doctors' opinions of diagnostic technology's medical utility. Recruitment e-mails were sent to 3,100 AMA-accredited physicians through their database that yielded a sample of 99 physicians for the study. One-sample t tests and, where appropriate because of non-normal data, one-sample Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were conducted on the data to address the following key research questions on whether diagnostic software decreases misdiagnosis in healthcare versus unassisted human diagnostic method, if physicians use diagnostic software frequently enough to decrease misdiagnosis in healthcare, and if liability concerns prevent physicians from using diagnostic software. It was found that in the opinion of those surveyed (a) diagnostic software was likely to result in fewer misdiagnoses in healthcare than unassisted human diagnostic methods, (b) when speaking for themselves, physicians thought they used diagnostic software frequently enough to decrease misdiagnoses, and (c) physicians agreed they were not prevented from using diagnostic software because of liability concerns. The study's social significance is the affirmation of diagnostic software's usefulness: Policy and technology stakeholders can use this finding to speed the adoption of diagnostic software, leading to a reduction in the socially costly problem of misdiagnosis.

Abstract:
The use of Application Performance Monitoring (APM) for collecting data about performance and end-user behaviors in complex software systems is increasing. APM is used to ensure availability and robustness and to enhance end-user experiences. This study aims to investigate how the adoption of APM can be done, what challenges organizations face during the implementation as well as costs and performance overhead associated with APM. This is achieved through a case study in which APM is introduced into the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system MONITOR G5, developed and maintained by the Swedish software company Monitor ERP System AB. The system is developed in Microsoft’s .NET Framework and the APM service used is Microsoft’s Application Insights. The study resulted in a proposed APM solution wherein data regarding user interactions, performance and errors are collected and visualized. Six dashboards were created, showing different aspects of the collected data, for instance: which parts of the system is most and least frequently used, errors, load times and performance metrics such as processor and memory usage. The cost analysis shows that monetary costs can be very high, but strategies for suppressing costs are proposed. The performance tests that were conducted to determine the performance overhead of APM are inconclusive, but it is likely that the performance penalty of using APM is small.

Kapetanakis, Stylianos. "Intelligent monitoring of business processes using case-based reasoning." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2012. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/9809/.

Full text
Abstract:
The work in this thesis presents an approach towards the effective monitoring of business processes using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR). The rationale behind this research was that business processes constitute a fundamental concept of the modern world and there is a constantly emerging need for their efficient control. They can be efficiently represented but not necessarily monitored and diagnosed effectively via an appropriate platform. Motivated by the above observation this research pursued to which extent there can be efficient monitoring, diagnosis and explanation of the workflows. Workflows and their effective representation in terms of CBR were investigated as well as how similarity measures among them could be established appropriately. The monitoring results and their following explanation to users were questioned as well as which should be an appropriate software architecture to allow monitoring of workflow executions. Throughout the progress of this research, several sets of experiments have been conducted using existing enterprise systems which are coordinated via a predefined workflow business process. Past data produced over several years have been used for the needs of the conducted experiments. Based on those the necessary knowledge repositories were built and used afterwards in order to evaluate the suggesting approach towards the effective monitoring and diagnosis of business processes. The produced results show to which extent a business process can be monitored and diagnosed effectively. The results also provide hints on possible changes that would maximize the accuracy of the actual monitoring, diagnosis and explanation. Moreover the presented approach can be generalised and expanded further to enterprise systems that have as common characteristics a possible workflow representation and the presence of uncertainty. Further work motivated by this thesis could investigate how the knowledge acquisition can be transferred over workflow systems and be of benefit to large-scale multidimensional enterprises. Additionally the temporal uncertainty could be investigated further, in an attempt to address it while reasoning. Finally the provenance of cases and their solutions could be explored further, identifying correlations with the process of reasoning.

Abstract:
Care process monitoring is important in healthcare domains to provide precise and detailed analytics on patients, providers, and resources participating in a care process and their status. These analytics are used to keep track of whether the quality of care goals set by healthcare organizations are satisfied and ensure that legislative and organizational guidelines are followed. The complexity of care process monitoring can vary depending on whether the care process takes place in a hospital or out in the community, and it can vary depending on the complexity of the information technology infrastructure that is in place to support the care process. A Care Process Monitoring Application (CPMA) is a software application which collects and integrates data from various sources while a care process is being provided, in order to provide performance reporting of metrics that are used to measure how well the performance goals and guidelines for the care process are being met. In our research, we have studied how CPMAs are built in order to improve the quality of their engineering. The significant challenge in this context is how to engineer a CPMA so that the engineering process is repeatable, produces a CPMA of consistent high quality, and requires less time, less effort and less complexity. This thesis proposes an application framework for care process monitoring that collects and integrates events from event sources, maintains the individual and aggregate states of the care process and populates a metrics data mart to support performance reporting. Our contributions are the following: a state-based application meta-model of care process monitoring, a care process monitoring architectural pattern, and finally, a behavior driven development methodology for CPMAs based on our meta-model and architectural pattern. Our results are validated through three different case studies in which we collaborated with two different health care organizations to build and deploy CPMAs for two different care processes (one hospital-based, the other community-based) in collaboration with healthcare clinicians and researchers.

The current economic scenario leads companies towards more and more dynamic performances by using all information available to enhance their decision processes. In order to achieve such target, many organizations have acquired business intelligence systems. The process of selecting this kind of system is difficult and different from the one used for other business acquisitions. Furthermore, it is influenced by intangible factors, which renders the application of the usual financial analysis techniques to support investment decisions impossible. It can then be said that the choice of business intelligence software is based on a set of factors, both tangible and intangible. This study aims mainly at identifying and establishing a ranking of the principal factors that influence the decision of choosing among business intelligence systems, and focused companies in the real estate development business operating in the Great São Paulo area. It also tries to identify – among the list of factors raised – the possible existence of aspects that determine the choice decision. The search was carried out by interviewing 12 people who have participated in any processes of choice of business intelligence system decision. Some of the interviewees work in IT, whereas others are in the business areas of seven real estate development companies operating in the Great São Paulo area. The evaluation of the research resulted in the identification of the most important factors and their hierarchical classification, enabling the establishment of a statistically valid ranking according to the Kendal’s coefficient of concordance, showing the 14 most influent factors in the choice decision. From that total, only 3 could be classified as determining or non-determining; the remainder did not provide answer patterns statistically valid for conclusions. After analysing the selection process followed by the 7 companies in the present research, two phases influenced by distinct factors were detected. Later, studying those phases together with the identified factors in the ranking, it was possible to propose a selection process aiming at a possible reduction of time and costs for the achievement of such activity. The theoretical contribution of this study is to complement the researches that identify the factors that influence the process of systems choice decision, specifically business intelligence ones, as it establishes a ranking of importance for the items identified, and also the relationship among important factors and specific phases in the process of selection herein identified.

The thesis entitled "The Use of Technologies of Intelligence on Demand Management of Cyberspace Products: Case Study 'Captare'", of the Master in Technologies of Intelligence and Digital Design - TIDD, focuses on how the industrial segments can come to know and understand, in a more effective way, the behavior of demand in retail. It was analyzed how intelligence softwares with a cognitive basis can collect, process, classify and interpret data generated from business to business transactions B2B. As a main informational means to be examined, within the case methodological line, it proposes the Captare Software used by industrial segments through an eMarketplace (Genexis.com). Captare is a information product (e-Business solution) supported by technology of algorithm intelligence in cyberspace with cognitive representation pattern. Its conception is based on the hybrid convergence of the multidisciplinarity of statistics, data mining, marketing, trade marketing, technology of information and hypermap, promoting interactive communication strategies of the triad "man", "interface" and "computer", turning it into a set to make the objectives happen, such as action, reaction, service or information

The practical part hereafter describes addressing the data quality within the specific BI/CRM project conducted by Clever Decision Ltd. This thesis is intended primarily for BI and data quality experts, as well as the others who are interested in these disciplines. The main contribution of this thesis is that it provides comprehensive view not only of data quality itself, but also deals with the issues that are directly related to the corporate data quality assurance. This thesis can serve as a sort of guidance for one of the first implementation phases in the BI projects, which deals with the data integration, data consolidation and solving problems in the area of data quality.

Abstract:
In recent times, the Internet revolution has spawned numerous innovative enterprises-virtual companies, and electronic markets. Electronic markets (or digital markets) are scalable web-based platforms for buyers, sellers, marketmakers, and brokers to carry out business transactions. Over the last two years, there has been a proliferation of such E-Markets on the web. In this thesis, we develop an E-marketplace, which we call IMAGINE (Intelligent Market with AGents and Integrative NEgotiations) that improves upon the existing state-of-the-art in several non-trivial ways. IMAGINE combines the best features of existing E-marketplaces with several innovations. The thesis describes the conceptualization, analysis, and design of IMAGINE and provides details of implementation of a prototype of IMAGINE at the Electronic Enterprises Laboratory, Department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science. IMAGINE is a collaborative, co-operative, intelligent E-Market that maximizes the combined utility value of the all traders involved. IMAGINE has several distinctive features: • It uses an innovative business model, which is intelligent in the sense of perceiving the nature of the market and market forces and using this market intelligence in matching buyers with sellers and in determining the prices. • It uses integrative negotiations, which make it attractive for buyers and sellers to reveal their true business interests and valuations. • A sound and robust software architecture for a web-based implementation using best practices in object technology. • Implementation of a prototype of IMAGINE has been carried out using leading edge Internet technologies such as multi-agent technology, Jini, and Javaspaces.
