Johnson, Richard James. "A cognitive approach to the representation of managerial competitive intelligence knowledge." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186884.

Full text
Abstract:
With today's rapidly changing business environment, more and more businesses are using competitive intelligence to improve planning efforts, identify threats and opportunities and help avoid unpleasant surprises. However, to be effective, this intelligence must be gathered and communicated between managers. Two research questions will address these issues: (1) can a representation of competitive knowledge be developed that reflects managerial thought and (2) will a graphical computer tool based on this representation elicit a more complete representation of competitive intelligence knowledge in a more efficient manner relative to traditional methods? Various studies have shown managerial thought to be represented in several ways, e.g., conceptual groupings, hierarchically, and causally. However, by proposing that managers represent information about competitors in a story structure and integrating this proposal with the literature from competitive intelligence and strategic planning, a more complete conceptual model results. To validate the proposed conceptual model, an archival case study of three competitors in the computer workstation market was conducted. Following that, interviews were conducted with six MBA students with experience in competitive intelligence and with six managers. The transcripts from these interviews have been analyzed and the conceptual model has been modified based on input from this content analysis. A prototype was developed using the ConceptBase platform, an X-windows tool that provides both graphical and textual access to concepts and their relationships. The prototype will allow managers to create a graphical representation of their competitive knowledge. This representation will allow managers to locate gaps in their knowledge and to communicate their information to others. The prototype was validated by two different groups of MBA students by asking them to represent a given competitive situation. One group used pencil and paper while the second group used the prototype. Both the number of uncategorized concepts and the number of relationships differed significantly. This indicates that a more complete representation was created using the prototype. The two main contributions of this research are: (1) a model of competitive intelligence knowledge based on managerial cognition, and (2) a prototype that will facilitate the elicitation of competitive intelligence knowledge in a graphical and understandable manner.

Haupt, Ross. "A business intelligence framework for supporting strategic sustainability information management in higher education." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5319.

Full text
Abstract:
In the higher education sector, a number of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are playing a leading role in promoting sustainable initiatives. Effectively managing these initiatives however can be a complex task and requires data and information from multiple aspects of operations. In an HEI, operating sustainably means ensuring financial sustainability, social sustainability, environmental sustainability and educational sustainability. In order to manage sustainability effectively, HEIs require an integrated tool that can provide information on all areas of sustainability. HEIs face a number of challenges in effectively managing sustainability information, such as siloed data and information, and poor sharing and communication of information. Business Intelligence (BI) can assist in overcoming many of the challenges faced by organisations in effectively managing strategic sustainability information. This study investigates both the constraints to effective sustainability information management and the challenges of BI. A BI framework to support effective strategic sustainability information management is proposed. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is one such HEI, which is affected by the challenges of managing strategic sustainability information. NMMU is therefore used as a case study in this research. A BI solution, Sustainable BI, was developed based on the proposed framework. The main goal of sustainable BI is to provide strategic management at NMMU with a tool that can provide integrated sustainability information that can assist in overcoming the challenges in effectively managing strategic sustainability information. Sustainable BI was evaluated by strategic management at NMMU who are responsible for managing sustainability at NMMU. The evaluation took place through a usability study. The study revealed to what extent Sustainable BI could effectively manage strategic sustainability information at NMMU. The BI framework was iteratively improved on based on the results of the evaluations. The contributions from this study are a model for sustainability management, a BI Framework to support strategic sustainability information management and a BI solution, Sustainable BI.

Abstract:
In economically turbulent times, Business Intelligence (BI) is increasingly being used to mitigate risk and increase certainty. The evolution of BI from a series of technologies to a platform for supporting strategies is analyzed in this thesis. The concentration is on how BI can streamline manufacturing, quality assurance, marketing and customer service are evaluated, as are the potential payoffs of increasing the level of insight an organization has. The thesis also includes analysis of how the more complex value chain processes including build-to-order, configure-to-order and quote-to-order can be made more efficient and profitable through the inclusion of BI and its associated analytics and technologies. The inclusion of the Delphi research technique makes this paper unique and strong in its content as well. The role of BI has shifted from being used in specific functional areas of an organization to being strategic in scope. The intent of this thesis is to evaluate its contributions to the customer-facing processes that are the most complex and most challenging to sustain, making BI an indispensible platform for their successful execution on the base of theories and practical experience of the BI experts.

Mosunich, Marissa Anne. "A Simulation Model for Decision Support in Business Continuity Planning." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2016. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1610.

Full text
Abstract:
Enterprises with a global supply network are at risk of lost revenue as a result of disruptive disasters at supplier locations. Various strategies exist for addressing this risk, and a variety of types of research has been done regarding the identification, assessment and response to the risk of disruption in a supply chain network. This thesis establishes a decision model to support Business Continuity Planning at the first-tier supplier level. The decision model incorporates discrete-event simulation of supply chain networks (through Simio software), Monte Carlo simulation, and risk index optimization. After modeling disruption vulnerability in a supply chain network, costs of implementing all combinations of Business Continuity Plans are ranked and then tested in discrete-event simulation for further insight into inventory levels, unmet customer demand, production loss and related costs. A case study demonstrates the implementation of the decision support process and tests a historical set of data from a large manufacturing company. Discrete-event simulation modeling of loss is confirmed to be accurate. The relevance of the model concept is upheld and recommendations for future work are made.

Abstract:

Strategic Intelligence is recognized in the field of administration by the capability to enhance the competitiveness of organizations and to support decision making through a better comprehension of the environment. However its strategic potential is linked with how their actions are developed and organized, it means, its structural integrity. On the other hand, the information culture, formed by values, norms and attitudes, influences on how information is handled in organizations and consequently the results of its use. In this context, this study aimed to investigate the influence of the relationship between the use of information and culture on the structural integrity (structure and organization) of strategic intelligence. The proposed research has a descriptive and quantitative approach with use of survey technique as research method and used descriptive statistical techniques for data analysis. The final sample collected data from 239 owners, sales managers and sales people who work in the commercial area of distributors and who have contact with the Randon’s Strategic Intelligence. Factor analysis resulted in eight factors explaining 63.957% of the variability, with KMO value 0.910 and Bartlett's sphericity test with significance p <0.000. The result of these eight correlation factors suggest a significant correlation between the strategic nature/structural of information, process integrity and transparency of information, which showed moderate to strong correlations. Regarding the statistical regression, the results showed that the strategic nature/structural of information it’s explained in 64.7% by three variables: process integrity, tools/systems and transparency of information.

Hou, Chung-Kuang. "The impact of integrating enterprise resource planning systems with business intelligence systems on decision-making and organisational performance An empirical study of the semiconductor industry." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.506259.

Abstract:
There is currently a trend for companies to invest in Business intelligence (BI) systems and integrate them with their original ERP systems in order to enhance their management decision-making capability. Even though much attention has been paid to the decision-making benefits of integrated systems in practice, limited academic research has investigated the issue of decision-making improvement. Therefore. the motivation for this study is to examine the impact of integrated ERP and BI (abbreviated as ERPBI) systems on decision-making and overall organisational performance, and to explore the relationship between decision-making performance and organisational performance. The study introduces a comprehensive measurement instrument for assessing the impact of ERPBI systems on both decision-making and organisational performance. A survey was conducted involving 108 companies in the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. The results of the survey indicate firstly, that ERPBI system usage in organisations is positively related to decision-making performance. Secondly, decision-making performance can mediate the effect of ERPBI system usage on organisational performance. Thirdly, organisations using ERPBI systems achieve higher levels of decision-making and organisational performance compared to organisations which only use ERP systems. The theoretical implications of the research include developing multidimensional measurement scales to assess decision-making performance and organisational performance. The decision-making performance construct consists of five dimensions: decision-making process, system quality, data quality & system reliability. decision communication and system flexibility. Based on the balanced scorecard approach developed by Kaplan and Norton, the organisational performance construct consists of four dimensions: financial, customer, internal process, and learning & growth perspectives. The measurement scales were tested using rigorous statistical methods including convergent validity, discriminant validity, reliability, and the validation of second-order constructs. The development of these measurements is expected to stimulate and facilitate theory development and empirical investigation in this field. The work facilitates understanding of the current adoption rate of ERPBI systems and the characteristics of those adopted in Taiwan's semiconductor industry. Moreover. the survey instrument of the study could be employed in the post-implementation phase of ERP or ERPBI systems as a diagnostic mechanism to assess whether anticipated decision-making benefits were realised, to examine whether the usage of the new system improved the overall firm's performance, and to explore how to further improve decision-making and organisational performance.

Abstract:
The short life cycles and highly variable demand in the fast fashion market causes various challenges in a retailer’s supply chain management processes. The essential task at hand is to provide the right product, at the right time, and at the right place. Due to this inherent difficulty, the bullwhip effect is a major issue in the fashion supply chain. To enhance customer satisfaction and increase the alignment between the supply and market place demand, companies have been pushed towards exploiting big data, supply chain analytics and AI techniques for better business decision making. One such critical but intrinsically complex decision is the development of a future apparel assortment; in particular defining its optimal breadth and depth. This thesis investigates how such AI techniques can be applied to develop a new assortment aligned with the future customer demands- and choice behavior. The research was conducted through firstly performing a qualitative case study at a fast fashion retailer. This explored the critical business decisions in the supply chain lacking AI support. The findings, revealing the assortment planning process as one such critical area, guided the second part of the thesis: a systematic literature review exploring the AI techniques used in this process in the retail - and fashion industry. An appropriate framework of planning a static apparel assortment in the fast fashion industry was developed and used as a guide throughout the study. The thesis discovered that there exists significant research in the field of applying AI techniques to generate and integrate knowledge about consumer demand- and choice behavior in the planning process of a future assortment. The main components to consider in this procedure is a) fashion forecasting, b) forecasting midterm demand, and c) forecasting product selection, incorporating the effects of substitution and complementarity at all times. This is believed to increase the alignment between supply and the marketplace demand, consequently reducing the bullwhip effect. The critical area for future research is how the discovered models are to be integrated in one singlemodel. Namely, simultaneously utilizing consumer choice behavior models and fashion forecasting to predict future demand of new items. Thus, the risk of suboptimization may be mitigated.

Abstract:
Business leaders around the world are expressing equal amounts of excitement and urgency for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Yet the upcoming AI revolution is clouded with uncertainties and misconceptions. In this thesis, the business value and application potential of AI were studied in a context of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems through a case study at a consultancy firm with small- to midsize clients. Three research questions were posed and answered: how can, or do, organizational processes covered by ERP systems benefit from AI, what AI features do customers typically request when ordering ERP systems, and is AI adopted with the purpose of reducing costs or increasing revenue? Using a framework for data analysis, multiple organizational processes covered by ERP systems were explored through interviews with ERP experts. The results indicated that small- and midsize companies were still primarily requesting and working to implement basic, incremental AI with the purpose of reducing costs through automations. Future leaders may instead need to implement AI that fundamentally reinvents their business processes, with the purpose of increasing revenue through augmentations. Overall, while some organizational processes have already been improved with AI solutions, many processes have yet to be AI-powered in the ERP solutions sold by the consultancy firm examined in this study. However, the consultants of the firm express great positivity for the untapped potential of AI, and many further AI solutions are being developed.

Abstract:
This work deals with the principles and methods of executing common managerial accounting tasks using Corporate Performance Management tools and technologies. The aim of the work is to analyze different practices, compare them and assess them against non-CPM solutions, especially ERP and spreadsheet solutions. The selection of tasks is based on a survey conducted among Czech companies and includes planning, budgeting, cost allocations and variance analysis. Conclusions are derived from the managerial accounting theory, fundamental works of Business Intelligence and personal experience gained through twelve CPM implementation projects. The conclusions are mostly platform-independent since functionality of several diverse CPM products is taken into account. The work highlights not only advantages but also restrictions of CPM tools and technologies. Many of the conclusions can be directly applied in practice. Work may be beneficial especially for business consultants and for companies considering the implementation of CPM.

The thesis deals with the latest trend in providing ICT service -- Cloud Computing -- and its possible application in enterprise information systems generally. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate market readiness for Cloud Computing services in order to find out to which extent it is possible to cover enterprise information system, or rather its software applications, on strategic and tactical management levels using the above-mentioned services. To achieve the aim, it is necessary to determine both the Cloud Computing services market and the enterprise information system sphere and then to decide whether Cloud Computing services are able to cover the basic needs of enterprise information systems. The evaluation of the market readiness will be executed in accordance with both the specially created methodology and the defined requirements. Thus the present market readiness rating will be possible to determine. The thesis should show to which extent it is possible to apply Cloud Computing model to the enterprise information systems issue. It will also be possible to find out the factors which support this application the most and, on the other hand, which factors limit this application the most. The thesis will also show which fields are advanced enough, which services we can consider and what we can expect of these services.

Abstract:
In the scope of Business Intelligence, planning aims to support multiple actors in their process of converging different views and problematics from different domains to get a shared business planning model. A major difficulty in business planning is that each actor states her/his views and problematics with a different time scale. Integrating them into a unique model that represents a common state of reality becomes very costly and awkward to manage when basing the construction of these models on discrete modeling techniques used by current tools of business planning. This doctorate thesis proposes a novel solution, beyond the state-of-the-art, for addressing these issues: it conceives a novel metamodel based on a continuous time calculus. Through the developed approach, it allows multiple actors to integrate the different business logics of their planning domain in a shared model as well as to observe it from different time scales. The advantages of our solution based on continuous time against solutions based on discrete time are presented through a case study. The conceived metamodel was implemented within a real industrial set in MGDIS (a company specialized in business planning for local governments) following an innovative service oriented architecture: this architecture segregates the modeling from the evaluation to allow the parallelization of model evaluation for big volumes of data. The overall solution conceived and implemented in this thesis was designed to be a real scale prototype to be applied to real scale problems. Besides the case study, it was validated by MGDIS experts on business planning against real requirements

Abstract:
The business environment context points at the necessity of new forms of management for the sustainable competitiveness of organizations through time. Coopetition is characterized as an alternative in the interaction of different actors, which compete and cooperate simultaneously, in the pursuit of common goals. This dual relation, within a gain-increasing perspective, converts competitors into partners and fosters competitiveness, especially that of organizations within a specific sector. The field of competitive intelligence has, in its turn, assisted organizations, individually, in the systematization of information valuable to decision-making processes, which benefits competitiveness. It follows that it is possible to combine coopetition and competitive intelligence in a systematized process of sectorial intelligence for coopetitive relations. The general aim of this study is, therefore, to put forth a model of sectorial coopetitive intelligence. The methodological outlining of the study is characterized as a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative methods), of an applied nature, of exploratory and descriptive aims. The Coordination of the Strategic Roadmapping Project for the Future of Paraná's Industry is the selected object of investigation. Protocols have been designed to collect primary and secondary data. In the collection of the primary ata, online questionary were sent to the sectors selected for examination. A total of 149 answers to the online questionary were obtained, and interviews were performed with all embers of the technical team of the Coordination, in a total of five interviewees. After the collection, all the data were tabulated, analyzed and validated by means of focal groups with the same five members of the Coordination technical team, and interviews were performed with a representative of each of the four sectors selected, in a total of nine participants in the validation. The results allowed the systematization of a sectorial coopetitive intelligence model called ICoops. This model is characterized by five stages, namely, planning, collection, nalysis, project development, dissemination and evaluation. Each stage is detailed in inputs, activities and outputs. The results suggest that sectorial coopetition is motivated mainly by knowledge sharing, technological development, investment in R&D, innovation, chain integration and resource complementation. The importance of a neutral institution has been recognized as a facilitator and incentive to the approximation of organizations. Among the main difficulties are the financing of the projects, the adhesion of new members, the lack of tools for the analysis of information and the dissemination of the actions.

Abstract:
Businesses are faced with an ever-changing environment of technology, one of these recurring changes is in the field of Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Technologies such as business intelligence (BI), machine learning (ML) and internet of things (IoT), which are driving forces in shaping the next generation of ERP systems. These improved ERP systems can better support a company compared to a traditional ERP system. This thesis has examined what constitutes an intelligent-ERP and what possibilities it presents from a business perspective. To answer this question, a qualitative study approach was chosen by conducting interviews with professionals within the BI and ERP systems field. The interviews were structured in a loose fashioned way, aiming for a holistic perspective of the I-ERP systems phenomenon. This bachelor thesis transpired to show that I-ERP systems do improve business performance for companies that exhibit the needs. However, there occurred differences in the perception of the definition of how I-ERP systems should be defined between the participants and the literature.

Abstract:
The need for personal financial planning has increased in the past few years because of deregulation of the financial industries. Expert system development has begun to emerge as a tool for many industries to increase their access and manipulation of information and data. This research looks at the domains of personal financial planning and expert systems technology by combining them with the systems development methodology. The qualitative and quantitative sides of financial planning have not been previously combined in an expert system for financial planning. Experts from the five main areas of financial planning and one hundred and ninety-one financial planning companies were included in the study. The expert system developed was evaluated in a 2 by 2 factorial design with the presence of the expert system on one axis and the presence of the expert planner during the process on the other axis. Eighty-five of the companies had the system installed at their site for two months of everyday use on the job and measurements were taken during the last two weeks. Fifteen hundred and sixty-seven plans were developed and analyzed. Data was collected from the files and the plans generated by the expert system or by the existing system. It was also collected from questionnaires filled out by both the planners and the clients before and after their use of one of the systems. The data were analyzed with respect to twenty-one hypotheses using statistical analysis, primarily ANOVA. The results indicate that the expert system can significantly increase the information processing capacity of financial planning companies. The process used for financial planning by the expert system was more comprehensive than existing systems which tend to focus on only one area of financial planning. The organizational structure was changed as a result of introducing the expert system into the financial planning process as witnessed by the increase of expertise for both the expert planners and the non-expert clerks.

Abstract:

Competitive Intelligence (CI) is an emergent topic with strategic importance for nations and enterprises, and with your continuum theoretical development, arise the necessity to establish links with another knowledge fields. It has been identified a gap of empirical studies that seek to relate CI with Top Management Involvement, an essential factor for the development of this activity within the organization. More than initial support of resources and legitimacy, Top Management Involvement presupposes the commitment and continuous participation of the Top Management in programs of this nature, a behavior that can be of significant influence for its success or failure. So, this research aimed to analyze the relationship between Top Management Involvement and the Context and Process dimensions of Competitive Intelligence Model in medium and large companies of Serra Gaúcha Brazil. Also, it has been proposed to learn about the level of CI development level in the region, limited to organizations of this size, and to explore the relations between Top Management Involvement, Competitive Intelligence and Performance at this organizations. Thus, a descriptive and quantitative research was carried out, based on a survey sample of 160 organizations, measured by scales proposed by another international studies and based on the theoretical model of context and process of IC. Results indicated that there is positive relationship between Top Management Involvement and the IC Development Level at the medium and large companies at Serra Gaúcha, and three out of four scenarios proposed can be perceived. Also there is a positive association between IC, Organizational Performance, Top Management Involvement and IC integration with the decision making process of these organizations. In general, it was observed that most of these companies developed some kind of monitoring (information collecting), even though they do not nominate this activity as "Intelligence". The main focus of monitoring are Sales, Competitors and Innovation in Products, which indicates a beginning of this field development in the companies of this region.d

Abstract:
Connections of the World of Information Technologies and its surroundings are increasingly growing and nobody can be surprised that the key success business factors are, for instance, correct and consistent processes supported by informational system. To implement this kind of back-office system doesn't already mean to get a competitive advantage, so therefore systems which support a decision making (also noticed as MIS, management information system) are becoming a standard. Implementation of any information system in a specific environment is a complex process which contains a lot of methods, procedures and tools which are called together as a methodology. The main aim of this work is the concept of the implementation methodology for financial planning and controlling software. This concept is based on the exact software which is already implemented and used in practice all over the world, but its implementation is always a matter of the particular provider. However, the output of this work is the methodology which is used as an internal material in a company I work nowadays for, it can be also an inspiration or a formal order of the implementation of similar system. Whole work could be divided into three components which are leading to reach the main aim. First two fragments are introducing systems which support decision making, and they are also informing about current market situation and requirements of planning and controlling upheld by these tools. The third part is concerned with the implementation of information systems and it is introducing existing methodologies which are used within MIS implementations. The last part is fundamental and practical, it contains actual concept of the implementation methodology with its practical example.

Abstract:

South Africa as a country continues to rank low in the world of competitiveness. The research done for this dissertation focused on the need for South African organisations to perceive Competitive Intelligence (CI) as one of the most important tools to improve their competitiveness through a systematic, practical approach to make the CI cycle worth while, especially through skills development. This study intends to identify the skills CI professionals in South Africa need in order to conduct the CI process in organisations effectively, thereby improving the country’s competitive position. However, the difficulty of this task lies with organisations in general not acknowledging the necessity of CI in the workplace. Only a limited number of organisations recognise the importance of such a unit. A survey was therefore conducted, by questionnaire, among organisations with existing CI units in which the respondents had to identify the skills they deemed necessary for the CI professional to run the CI process effectively. Findings suggested that the majority of respondents were 40 years and older, in the top structure of larger organisations and had been using CI for longer than five years. The overwhelming result is thus that there are skills inequalities between what skills respondents view as crucial and those that rated highest in their self-evaluation. Skills identified as most important include, among others, networking and research skills analytical abilities. The research also indicated that where CI had been established in certain organisations for at least five years, it did not reflect positively overall on South Africa’s current competitive situation. However, where there is a systematic CI approach, problem-solving is easier to address and negatives could be turned around. With this in mind and a proper “buy-in” into skills development, it will have a very positive outcome for all the organisations that wish to improve their competitiveness.

The most important enterprise operational information exist in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. This study attempts to detect the relationship between BIS implementation and operating performance with ERP system. The samples of this study are public listed companies of Taiwan. Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) are two Performance Indicators in Multiple regression model of this study. We find that ERP system have positive effects on BIS implementation. When company implements BIS, the firm performance will improve for connecting foreign ERP system. It indicates foreign ERP system provide better information better than domestic ERP system. Foreign ERP systems are more mature, complete system function, better system architecture than domestic ERP Systems. It is also an important to evaluate the accuracy of the consultant professional evaluation about BIS implementation. The consultant's professional evaluation is not affected by personal preference or the pressure of project clearance rate. Consultant is loyalty to report the performance of BIS implementation. Therefore, the consultant evaluation becomes an important reference to judge the value of BIS.

Abstract:
Today companies are competing on the basis of what they know, how fast they learn it, and how well they use what they learn. At the heart of this knowledge-based competition lie knowledge and even more important intelligence. Competitive Intelligence, as a discipline, is increasingly being viewed as a critical enabler to reach competitive advantage. Previous research, however, suggest that South African com¬panies showed a general lack of appropriate pro¬cesses or structures for competitive intelligence compared to their international counterparts. The research aims to demonstrate, through a case study, how the theoretical concepts associated with competitive intelligence can be translated into practice so as to ensure efficient and cost effective competitive intelligence practices and thus contribute to the future success of competitive intelligence programmes in South Africa.

Abstract:
Today, the only certainty is uncertainty. The rate of change is continuing on a steep curve upward, information is growing in volume constantly, and the complexity of the marketplace is increasing exponentially. In order to survive, decision-makers need to anticipate and accommodate developments in the world outside, to sustain and exceed their core competitive advantage. The question is how do they go about doing this? The answer lies in competitive intelligence! Competitive Intelligence is a systematic process involving planning, gathering, analysing and disseminating information on external environment for opportunities or developments that have the potential to affect a company's competitive situation. Research reveals that competitive intelligence (Cl) has evolved from an informal into a formal discipline. While many still confuse it with just being competitor information, it has proven to expand much further into a meaningful and value-added input in the strategic decision-making process. Decisionmakers need to be equipped with the proper tools before they start the strategic planning process. The purpose of this research study is to explore the impact of competitive intelligence practices on strategic decision-making. It aims to identify the best way forward in making competitive intelligence more credible within organisations. The accelerating speed and complexity of change in the business environment places a heightened premium on timely, rigorous understanding of developing threats and opportunities. Consequently, the success of competitive advantage within organisations increasingly depends on aggressive and systematic competitive intelligence efforts to support and enable strategic decision-making. The study presents an holistic competitive intelligence framework, taking theoretical, best practices and a case study approach, enabling any organisation to successfully adapt Cl processes and structures in any given situation.

Abstract:
Business intelligence, as a decision support tool in many organisations, has offered the ability to gather, store, access and analyse huge amounts of data so that better decisions can be made regarding customers, suppliers, employees, logistics and infrastructure. Prior empirical studies of business intelligence and decision support applications (BIDSA) focus on technological and operational aspects and there is very little research to consider managerial and strategic factors. The factors that affect the adoption of BIDSA have, however, not yet been fully investigated. Differences in the use of information technology (IT) have been distinguished in different countries and so it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study about the facilitating and inhibiting factors in the adoption and diffusion of BIDSA in Australia. The aim of this study was thus to fill the gap by investigating factors affecting the successful adoption of BIDSA in Australian ERP user organisations by applying Rogers’ theory of Diffusion of Innovations (DOI), and to develop a conceptual model for the successful adoption of BIDSA.

Internship Report presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business Intelligence
Within the last decade organizations in most industry segments have been forced to transform from focusing on the core business to also adopt digitally advanced and data driven processes. The in-house competence to lead and execute a digital transformation are, in many organizations, a scarce commodity. Hence the transformation for companies is challenging and to decide on the pace, options and strategic focus is a complex task. The fast paced and global industry of fashion retail does not differ from the above and is will be forced to rely on new technical advancements such as Machine Learning, Advanced Analytics and Big data to increase revenue and stay competitive. The company Nudie Jeans Co. is one of the leading brands in sustainable fashion. The company is focused on denim products with the mission of providing long-lasting and eco-friendly products to the world. The company has a worldwide distribution network with presence of sales over all continents via three main channels – Retail, e-Commerce, and additional wholesale customers. With the objectives of Nudie Jeans Co., to stay competitive and gain market shares in the increasingly global and digital market, the company must adopt, evolve, and transform the digital architecture and usage of data. This internship will be focused on specific projects where Nudie Jeans Co. will transform from their former digital framework to a more up-to-date and sustainable structure. This involves three phases, migration to the cloud, implementation of new Business intelligence tools and finally development of predictive demand planning model.

Abstract:
Improving the interconnection between strategy and execution, as well as the management cycle (planning-driving-monitoring-evaluating-reporting), through the organization alignment with its own objectives and greater transparency of its business processes – internal control process, performance management and decision support information systems – is no doubt a challenge for today’s organizations. Through Business Performance Management (BPM) and Business Intelligence (BI) systems, namely using modules like data diagnosis, analysis, accessibility, share and reports, managers can better understand what is essential in their business, converting lots of information in helpful, reliable, and opportune knowledge, making results out of it. This dissertation studies and identifies the requirements of a management planning and control support tool in the portuguese telecommunications industry (Hyperion), to better understand some possible flaws that are generally pointed out at it, and how can it be improved. The work is structured in subsequent and complementary phases, whose goal is to guide the investigation in a more efficient way. It appeals to interviews made to specialists that use the chosen tool, including the managers of the Management Control Planning of the organization used as case study, trying to gather information that allows characterizing, criticizing and proposing improvements in the subject study, and in its implementation in the organization. The Management Control Planning main issues are pointed out, giving special attention to the performance management area. The needs of underlying information are analyzed, with the help of interviews on specialists. A discussion about what kind of information is relevant to the system is presented, mainly based on the previous chapters. The system information technical requirements required for such a system are identified, based mainly in interviews on specialists The selected tool and the context of the diligence to ZON Multimédia are presented, with focus on the evolution of the portuguese telecommunications industry, more specifically the Portugal Telecom Group, and the PT Multimédia companie (now ZON Multimédia). The reasons that boosted this case studie are presented, and the restrictions of the chosen tool are v identified, all with the help of interviews on specialists and on managers of the planning and control area of the case study organization. Finaly improvement sugestions to that tool are presented.
