Kettunen, T. M. (Titta-Maria). "Social value creation abroad:social enterprises’ adaptation to foreign environments." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2015. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201503121144.

Abstract:
The research focuses on internationalizing social value creation of social enterprises taking the point of view of social enterprises’ adaptation to foreign environments. The paper aims to clarify what kinds of methods social enterprises use in order to adapt to the foreign environments in which they are creating social value. The research has been conducted as a qualitative study combining information from previous researches with new empirical data collected by interviewing four international social enterprises. The interviewed enterprises operate and are originally from different countries. The results of this study show that internationalization of social enterprises is partly different from the internationalization of commercial ones. Due to the differences in mission and operating context, social enterprises often face bigger challenges when internationalizing their mission than commercial enterprises do. Based on this research, it is obvious that social networks and partnerships are crucial for social enterprises when adapting to foreign markets. The partners can help, among other things, in learning the culture, applying for funding and in general recognizing the social value creation possibilities abroad. In addition, changing the legislation and rules in the host country, organizational flexibility and product adaptation play an important role when adapting to creating social value abroad. The earlier researches have quite rarely focused on the internationalization aspects or taken the international perspective on social entrepreneurship. Therefore, adaptation to foreign environments is a new topic in social entrepreneurship research. Hence, the results of this study help to understand the field of international social entrepreneurship better and contribute to theory building on the field. Furthermore, the results can be used as a tool to facilitate internationalization of social impact
Tutkimus paneutuu yhteiskunnallisten yritysten yhteiskunnallisen vaikutuksen kansainvälistämiseen ja erityisesti ulkomaiseen toimintaympäristöön sopeutumiseen yhteiskunnallisen vaikutuksen näkökulmasta. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, millä tavoin yhteiskunnalliset yritykset pyrkivät sopeutumaan ulkomaisille markkinoille laajentaessaan luomansa yhteiskunnallisen vaikutuksen ulottuvaksi kotimaansa ulkopuolelle. Tästä syystä ulkomaisille markkinoille sopeutuminen on yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden tutkimuksessa uusi aihe, minkä vuoksi tämän tutkimuksen tulokset auttavat ymmärtämään kansainvälisen yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden ilmiötä paremmin sekä tarjoavat työkalun yhteiskunnallisen vaikutuksen kansainvälistämisen avuksi

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The signing of the US-China bilateral trade agreement in November 1999 paved the way for the People's Republic of China (hereafter China) to ascend to World Trade Organisation as a member. China's bid to become part of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) renewed foreign investor interest after a decade of growth in foreign direct investment (FDI) in China. An analysis of FDI to China confirms that foreign firms take an evolutionary approach to enter the Chinese market place. Since the opening of the economy to foreign investors in 1978, foreign enterprises shifted their utilisation of entry modes from contractual joint ventures (CJV), to equity joint ventures (EJV) and since 1994 many entered China without the help of a local partners through wholly foreign owned enterprises (WFOE's). Problems and frustration with joint venture partners gave rise to the growth in WFOE's. However EJV's are still superior in profitability and market share to the WFOE. Foreign investors need guidance in selecting the most appropriate entry mode. However, entry mode frameworks and models offered in literature are contradictory and fragmented. Entry mode alternatives in China can be represented on a continuum of control. CJV's and minority EJV's represent the lowest level of control or ownership while the WFOE, the highest level of control. This study proposes that the entry mode decision can evaluated in terms of the level of ownership that a foreign investor should adopt in a foreign invested enterprise (FIE). Turning to the theoretical foundations of entry mode choice, the transaction cost-, eclectic-. resource based -, strategic behaviour -, institutional- and evolutionary theories are integrated into a framework from which entry mode can be considered. From its theoretical foundations entry mode determinants are reviewed and propositions made regarding the impact of each determinant on the ownership level in a FIE. A review of and application of the framework to the Chinese business environment resulted in the market entry mode decision framework for foreign investors in China (MEMOFFIC). The MEMDFFIC suggest a phased external-, internal-, partner and project analysis when considering entry mode choice. China's high market potential, experience in attracting FDI as well as high level of opportunism and weak intellectual property protection are proposed to motivate foreign investors to adopt high ownership levels when entering into China.

Howard, Christopher O. "Approaches to the problems of political risk in foreign direct investment." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18270.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the challenges multinational enterprises face from political risk when making and operating foreign direct investments. The thesis considers political risk and a wide variety of approaches to its analysis and provides insight into the process of foreign direct investment, the nature of the political threat facing it, foreign investment decision making by multinationals, and the tools developed in the commercial, academic, and governmental arenas to avoid and combat the effects of political risk. In essence, the thesis addresses a business application of theories and methodologies used in political studies. The first hypothesis is: if political risk is properly understood as a phenomenon of the political environment, then it a) defies direct quantification and b) can be explained as a series of discrete elements which can be analyzed separately. The second hypothesis is: if political risk is properly understood as a series of non-quantifiable elements, analysis of political risk cannot be depended upon alone to protect multinational enterprises from political risk in foreign direct investment. The first hypothesis is addressed through a critical review and consideration of business and political risk literature. Two analytical tools are developed in this process: a ladder of cognition consisting of a series of conditions of knowledge which can be held regarding a specific risk, and indicating the type and approximate accuracy of analysis which can be undertaken of such risk; and a representation of the political risk equation as a two stage process consisting of an abstract (environmental) risk event and a discrete effect which the event may or may not have on a specific investment. The second hypothesis is addressed through a critical review of methods of political risk analysis including "qualitative" approaches with roots in traditional studies and "quantitative" approaches derived from statistical analysis and behavioralist-based determinism. Critiques of each approach include operational strengths and weaknesses, performance histories (when applicable), conceptual and practical capabilities from the perspective of the analytical tools described above, and theoretical strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of the political studies discipline. Both hypotheses are supported and the thesis concludes by reviewing tools which can be used by multinationals to manage and mitigate the effects of political risk and considering additional academic work in this arena which would be useful in developing this application of political studies.

Jiang, Fuming, and fuming jiang@anu edu au. "Foreign pharmaceutical firms' FDI entry strategies into China." Swinburne University of Technology, 2001. http://adt.lib.swin.edu.au./public/adt-VSWT20050407.095122.

Full text
Abstract:
Foreign direct investment (FDI) in China is popular these days and this also applies to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. China seems to be a promising market for pharmaceuticals with over 1.2 billion potential consumers. This huge number of people together with the outstanding economic performance attracted multinational pharmaceutical firms that were looking for a new market for their products. By the end of 1998, China had established over 1,500 pharmaceutical enterprises with foreign investment and 117 of which were invested by foreign pharmaceutical firms. Foreign pharmaceutical firms invested their capital and technology in what is likely to be developed as the worlds largest pharmaceutical market in the future with the expectation they will earn an excellent return in the longer term. When a firm decides to establish an overseas operation, it has to decide whether to pursue the venture alone or with a joint venture partner (Bell, 1996). For most manufacturers that want to invest abroad, the first-best entry strategy remains the sole venture (SV), and joint venture (JV) would be a second-best invest entry strategy (Root, 1994), because JV is inferior to SV which allows investing firms to maximise the returns on ownership-specific advantages (Caves, 1982) and to have full control over the business operations. Foreign pharmaceutical firms who invested in China during the period from 1980 to 1998 basically chose either a SV or JV entry mode, and over 84 percent of the foreign pharmaceutical firms chose a JV entry mode rather than a SV, even though foreign investors have been allowed to set up 100 percent solely foreign owned sole venture operations in China since the passage of Law of the Peoples Republic of China on Foreign Capital Enterprises at the Fourth Session of the Sixth National Peoples Congress on 12 April 1986. This research was designed to investigate why the large majority of pharmaceutical firms preferred the second-best entry mode for entering into the Chinese market. This research has incorporated in Root (1994), Mockler and Dologites (1997) conventional foreign market entry mode framework, and the relevance of Kumar and Subramaniams (1997) contingency entry mode framework is acknowledged. Fieldwork was mainly conducted in China by personal interviews as well as mail questionnaire surveys over a period of three months in 1999 and 44 companies participated in total. Using multiple indicators by means of logistic regression analysis to examine the effects of groups of factors on entry mode decision choice between SV and JV options. Seven groups of factors (independent variables) were examined: China environmental factors, China market factors, China production factors, parent firms home country/region factors, parent firms product factors, parent firms resource commitment factors, and parent firms decision task related factors. This research has found that the probability for establishing joint ventures with Chinese partner (s) is significantly and positively related to the importance of China environmental factors and market factors. Parent firms decision task related factors had a positive impact on firms decision to choose a SV entry mode. Bivariate analyses have also discovered a number of individual variables that had significant impacts on firms entry mode choice decisions. The research did not show sufficient evidence to support that China production factors, parent firms home country/region factors, parent firms product factors, and parent firms resource commitment factors had significant influences on foreign pharmaceutical firms entry mode decisions, although the results showed expected directions of the relationships between the entry mode choice and independent variables. This research has contributed to the entry mode theory literature in the way of developing, as the result of the research in this thesis, an eclectic framework for better understanding of theories in choosing an entry mode between a sole venture and a joint venture in the context of foreign direct investment into the Chinese market, particularly it has discovered significant variables that affected the foreign pharmaceutical firms FDI entry mode decisions into the Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing industry during the period of 1980~1998. The framework can be used as a base by researchers to develop further the theories of foreign market entry strategies and to test its relevance in other industries or countries. This research has also extended its examinations to some other important issues in relations to foreign direct investment in China. They are the difference between early and late entrants, and between eastern and western firms on FDI entry mode decisions, foreign pharmaceutical firms FDI decision formulation, FDI implementation, FDI performance evaluation, joint venture partner and operation location selections in China were also analysed and discussed in this thesis. Further research with larger sample size into the interrelationships among strategic FDI decision formulation, entry mode choice, strategy implementation and evaluation would be worthwhile to help understand the entire process of strategic FDI planning and implementation.

Gouws, Stephanie. "A study on the cultural adjustment of the domestic partners of German expatriates in the Nelson Mandela Bay automotive industry." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1540.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the cultural adjustment of the domestic partners of German expatriates working in the Nelson Mandela Bay automotive industry of South Africa. The data was collected by distributing pre-interview questionnaires to the participants and conducting in-depth interviews with them. Grounded theory was used in the data collection and analysis and an auto-ethnographic approach was employed, allowing for reflexivity. The findings suggest that the expatriated domestic partners did not necessarily experience much difficulty in adjusting to South African culture as they did, for example, adjusting to not being able to work for the duration of their stay. The research has also shown that the unmarried domestic partners of expatriate employees are at a disadvantage compared to their married counterparts; receiving less assistance from the companies of their partners. Based on the findings, it has been recommended that companies refine and streamline the assistance they offer to the domestic partners of their expatriate employees, providing all domestic partners with the same pre-departure training and entitling them to the same benefits.

Abstract:
China’s State-owned Enterprises are important actors in China’s foreign policy arsenal. In the last decade, these massive companies began an international expansion unlike anything seen before on Earth. Going into developing nations, these companies undertake massive infrastructure and development projects in countries that most western nations have written off. This paper examines the success and failure of SOEs when they go abroad employing three case studies from the past decade, the Mes Aynak copper mine in Afghanistan, the Sicomines infrastructure and copper project in the Congo, and the COVEC highway project in Poland. The projects are then analyzed to determine the strengths and weaknesses of SOEs and comments on whether or not they are successful tools of diplomacy in our contemporary globalized world.

Faas, Pamella Misiwe. "A development of solutions to the problems experienced by expatriates in multinational corporations." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/424.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate the reasons for international assignments ending in failure, using the current models of expatriates’ premature withdrawal decisions, so as develop solutions to those problems. Studies of expatriate failure and effects of expatriate satisfaction on organisational performance have been conducted but most of them in the overseas countries. These studies revealed that the practice of employing expatriates is a strategic move on the part of the multinational corporation to increase the international experience and knowledge base of present and future managers. Even though studies on strategies that companies can use have been done extensively, research still shows that a large number of overseas assignments end in failure. Failure being described as the premature return to the home country, not being able to adjust in the host company or country and immediately living the company upon return from the assignment. It is for this reason that in the researcher decided to investigate what could be the reasons that cause the expatriates to return home early. The research will be of importance to South Africa firstly, as organisations that are operating globally will copy the business systems and processes practiced in developed countries, and later bring knowledge, skills and expertise that will help in boosting the economy of the country. Secondly, the organisation's Human Resource Management will develop practices to ensure the successful and effective retention of expertise. Expatriate failure will be reduced and the process of repatriating expatriates will be meaningful. Individuals assigned will not find it difficult to adjust in the parent company, and later take the skills they have learnt to another company. Thirdly, managers generally will understand the challenges that accompany expatriation, and be able to meet those challenges. The research becomes an investigative research as one tries to establish if there is concurrence or deviation with the current models. A sample is drawn from a list of international companies that have operations overseas. The researcher has tried to get responses from companies in all provinces of South Africa so that the sample can be fully representative. The questionnaire is used as it is a common instrument for observing data beyond the physical reach of the researcher. The questions were selected to address each of the factors affecting decisions to withdraw from the country of assignment. Responses from the expatriates have helped to develop a new model that encompasses all the factors that cause the expatriates to leave the assignment early as well to develop solutions to the problems. This will not only help the multinational corporations to save on costs, but will also ensure that the company and the expatriate benefit from international assignment.

Abstract:
As we all know, economic globalization and internationalization have sparked off countless studies and arguments in the past years. Some of the conventional theories about the internationalization of firms, however, are repeatedly challenged when they are applied to the less developed countries. The internationalization of firms from less developed countries has been a topic of growing interest in the international business and economics literature. In our study, we consider the influence of institutions from both the host and home country on entry modes of Chinese firms expanding overseas. Based on a sample of 314 China’s MNCs, the results support our hypotheses that both home and host institutions have significant effects on entry modes. Meanwhile, there are significant interactions between institutional quality of the host country and the government support of the home country and ownership type. At last, we find that both home and host institutional factors also affect the entry mode for a certain investment type, especially for the R&D investment. These findings have meaningful implications for understanding the internationalization behaviors of Chinese firms and the effect of dual institutional factors in studying the foreign entry modes of MNCs.

Abstract:
SFAS No. 52, Foreign Currency Translation, was issued in December, 1981, replacing SFAS No. 8, Accounting For the Translation of Foreign Currency Transactions and Foreign Currency Financial Statements. SFAS No. 52 has shifted the impact of translation gains and losses from the income statement to the balance sheet. It was expected that SFAS No. 52 would eliminate the incentive for multinationals to engage in various hedging activities to reduce the effect of the translation process in reported earnings. It was also expected that multinationals would change their foreign exchange risk management practices. The major purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of SFAS No. 52 on foreign exchange risk management practices of U.S. based multinationals.

Abstract:
Academic research on foreign direct investment (FDI) has concentrated primarily on its motives and means of market entry. In contrast, comparatively little work has examined the impact of FDI upon an investing firm, and of this, the focus has in the main concentrated on just one dimension, namely the impact upon its financial performance. This study argues for the need to incorporate non-financial measures such as the impact of FDI upon an investing MNE's performance in key functional areas that include its technology, production, marketing, human resource and procurement management. It also argues for the need to assess the impact of FDI through detailed case studies on individual MNEs. It presents empirical evidence gathered from three Singaporean industrial MNEs: Yeo Hiap Seng Limited, Wearnes Brothers Limited and Times Publishing Limited. The findings confirm that the diversity of environments which they are exposed to, provides them with multiple stimuli and subsequently allows them to develop capabilities and learning opportunities not open to domestic firms. The findings also strongly suggest that all the three case companies see the current losses incurred by their overseas subsidiaries as part of the price they are willing to pay in order to achieve their long-range corporate goals. Indeed, despite suffering from poor financial returns from their FDI, all of them regard their foreign operations as "successful" in marketing and/or technical terms. In other words, this study refutes the body of literature (i.e. explanations of FDI based on economics) which suggests that a firm will undertake FDI particularly only in those countries where it perceives the highest gain in financial returns. Conversely, this study suggests that a firm's choice of foreign market entry mode will depend on its strategic motives for overseas expansion. It also strongly suggests that MNEs are willing to accept trade-offs (e.g. short-term profits) for their long-term corporate goals (e.g. to establish an integrated manufacturing and marketing network in their major markets and/or increase overseas market share). Lastly, this study provides conclusive empirical evidence to demonstrate that the performance of an MNE's particular overseas investment and its impact upon the parent company's competitiveness has significant influence upon its subsequent FDI decisions and characteristics.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDF (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The risk of operating in a foreign investment climate is a subject of interest to most investors looking for opportunities to expand their international footprint. There are many organisations that provide risk assessments of the levels of threat of specific risks in foreign countries. However, most focus on political or what is commonly known as country risk or they provide a summary of ranking providing a comparison of different countries’ investment climate attractiveness. The make-up of the variables used in coming up with the ranking or a view on a particular country do not usually provide a level of detail that allows an analyst to understand the qualitative issues that give a country a particular rating assessment or ranking. This research has tried to address this gap by coming up with a detailed qualitative model that provides understanding of the key sources of information required for each major category of risk. The research also attempts to integrate as many aspects of the business environment that could affect a country. A particular case of Malawi has been chosen to demonstrate the level detail and understanding the investors need to reach before making a decision on whether to invest in a country. The research focuses on three major areas. The first is to provide a good understanding of what is currently available for analysts to use in determining risk factors of a particular environment or risk category. The second is to illustrate the uses and limitations of the options available in the form of assessment reports or assessment models. The third is to develop a model and demonstrate its use in the context of Malawi’s investment climate.
