Abstract:
With a major proportion of research on Electronic Commerce (EC) undertaken on large corporations, and focused primarily on developed countries, little is known about the determinants of EC in Small and Mediumsized Enterprises (SMEs) of developing nations. This chapter explores the extent of EC use by SMEs, and provides some empirical evidence of how internal factors of firm and owner are influencing EC adoption among smaller businesses in Malaysia. The methodology and results of this study may be applicable to other developing countries. Findings confirm the low level of participation in EC by SMEs. The age of enterprise, as well as the owner’s gender and education were found to be significant in determining the level of EC adoption. Though some of the results contradict those of previous studies, they may have a greater implication for government authorities in drawing up guidelines, approaches, and formulating more effective frameworks to promote EC use among SMEs in developing countries.

Abstract:
The presence of hypermarkets with modern retail format has impacted the performance of retail small medium-enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. The challenges of remaining competitive and the ability to sustain the business have pushed many retail SMEs to cease operations within a short period after commencement. Despite these challenges, retail SMEs can still attain competitive advantage through the strategies of strengthening and maintaining business relationships with their social networks. This study postulates that fostering social networks, specifically on the notion of homophily or similarities among social network members, is able to lure valuable resources needed by retail SMEs in achieving superior business performance. Unfortunately, only few studies have focused on social networks from within the Asian context and many tend to overlook the importance of social networks specifically in retailing. This study also suggests the relationship between value and status similarities of retail SMEs and their ability to coordinate efforts in horizontal relationships. Therefore, this study extends the discussion on the role of social networks towards better business performance of retail SMEs in Malaysia by conceptualizing a framework indicating the importance of value and status homophily on coordination of activities leading to business performance of retail SMEs.

Abstract:
In innovative eras, business models (BMs) are the key factor driving business success. However, implementing innovative BMs is time-consuming and high-risk. Therefore, conducting BM feasibility evaluations after their initial design is important, but some unsolved problems remain in the assessment of the feasibility of BMs. Deciding whether to implement innovative BMs is difficult for all enterprises. The business model canvas (BMC) methodology has been widely adopted by enterprises that are designing innovative BMs. This study proposes a BMC-based feasibility evaluation method geared towards SMEs or new entrepreneurs. The study verifies the proposed method by designing BMs for a non-profit organization and an innovative coffee shop. The rationality of each dimension of the two BMs is calculated to generate a radar chart, and based on the results, advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The proposed method can be used to guide designers of innovative for-profit and non-profit BMs in evaluating feasibility and identifying strengths and weaknesses in each BM block.

Abstract:
In recent years, domestic enterprises have shown a strong development trend with rapid growth and wide coverage. The construction and operation of enterprise management models are crucial to the development of enterprises, and a good enterprise management model helps enterprises stand firm in market competition and achieve long-term development. Under the background of the new economic normal, the market environment has seen tremendous changes, which have far-reaching effects on the operation and development of enterprises. In order to cope with the impact of the changing economic situation on enterprises, enterprises need to reasonably improve their management models and promote their sustainable and stable development. Through qualitative and quantitative research, scholars have expressed their views on this issue. Combining the existing studies and analyses by scholars at home and abroad, this paper discusses the necessity of the need for innovation in enterprise management in the context of the big data era, discusses the current situation of enterprise management, reveals the problems from both microaspects and macroaspects of enterprises, uses artificial neural networks to establish an enterprise performance assessment model and related policy recommendations, improves the efficiency of enterprises, and puts forward some constructive suggestions for the innovation of enterprise management models.

Abstract:
The existence of hypermarkets and supermarkets with modern retail format has affected the performance of many retailers in the category of small medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. In this era of disruptive marketing, the main challenges of retail SMEs are the ability to survive, to remain competitive and to sustain the business. With the challenges of finding the right strategies to compete effectively, there is now an inclination to look at social networks as means of establishing strong market presence. Engaging and maintaining social networks in their business relationships is essential for retail SMEs if they want to address strategic positions and subsequently build strong competitive advantage in the business. This study postulates that establishing social networks, specifically in terms of propinquity (related with network cluster, network centrality and geographic proximity) among social network members, will enable the gathering of important resources needed by retail SMEs to secure more sustainable competitive advantage. However, only few studies have focused on social networks especially from the Asian context and many have overlooked the importance of social networks in retailing. This study also suggests the need to focus on coordination in relation to propinquity of social networks which refers to the location of retail SMEs and their ability to coordinate efforts to gain competitive advantage. This study extends the literature on social networks by providing a conceptual framework describing the importance of propinquity on coordination of activities leading to the development of competitive advantage for retail SMEs.

Abstract:
Business management is an important part of social service and governance. With the development of economy and technology, the pressure on enterprises to participate in the market competition is gradually increasing. Therefore, it is particularly important to establish an information-based business management system. However, there are still many problems in the process of informatization development of enterprise business management, which seriously restricts the comprehensive development of enterprises. On the one hand, the existing business management information system lacks effective security and supervision links. On the other hand, there is a lack of professional information technology personnel within the enterprise. Machine learning is a discipline that specializes in how to simulate human learning behavior, and it can continuously learn new knowledge structures to make itself progress and develop. The development of enterprise business management informatization is consistent with the development direction of machine learning itself. Therefore, this paper proposes a business management informatization construction method based on a machine learning algorithm, which aims to further promote the development of enterprises in the direction of informatization and modernization and improve the informatization level of enterprises. Experiments show that with the support of machine learning technology, the level of enterprise business management informatization can reach 82.31%, fully indicating that machine learning can help enterprises innovate management models and improve the level of information management of enterprises.

Abstract:
With the rise and gradual development of the Internet, today's era has been transformed into the information age. The network transaction mode has involved all levels. At the same time, a new business model is gradually emerging, that is, e-commerce enterprises. Compared with the traditional business model, e-commerce enterprises are more information technology, networking, and convenience. In the current cross-border e-commerce enterprise development model, e-commerce enterprise performance evaluation and application have always been a key concern. Based on the lag of performance calculation and analysis of cross-border e-commerce enterprises, this paper carries out experimental analysis by combining the in-depth learning model. The results of the experiment are as follows: (1) it analyzes the growth situation of overseas Internet sales enterprises, determines the research direction of the experiment, puts forward the construction principles of the performance index system of overseas Internet sales enterprises, and constructs the performance evaluation system of overseas Internet sales enterprises according to the principles, to ensure the reliability of data and effectiveness of performance accounting. (2) On the basis of retaining the traditional performance calculation and evaluation mode of cross-border e-commerce enterprises, the in-depth learning mode is integrated into the performance evaluation process of overseas Internet sales enterprises. Using the in-depth learning mathematical algorithm combined with the enterprise performance calculation algorithm of cross-border e-commerce enterprises can not only ensure the effectiveness of performance calculation but also classify more quickly, facilitate the later use, and reduce the pressure on business enterprise enterprises.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to explore the internationalisation of service-sector small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from an emerging market, focussing on the entry modes, psychic distance, business network, internationalisation challenges and capabilities of business training and consultancy firms from Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachA multiple-case study approach is adopted, and 31 in-depth interviews were conducted with the top management and executives from eight business training and consultation (BT&C) firms in Malaysia. The Uppsala model is used for theoretical guidance to analyse the internationalisation of the firms.FindingsThe results suggest that psychic distance, business network and business capabilities influence the internationalisation of BT&C firms from Malaysia. However, the discussion of entry modes in the framework of service internationalisation does not accurately explain the internationalisation of the studied firms.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is a qualitative research based on the experiences of eight firms. The basis of this study is inadequate for scientific generalisation. Quantitative research should be conducted in the future to provide a statistical test and empirical results. This study is concerned with the emerging-market context. The study could be expanded to include more industries and other emerging markets in the future.Practical implicationsThis study explored the application of internationalisation theories to the BT&C industry in an emerging market, with particular emphasis on firms’ entry modes, psychic distance, business networks, international challenges and capabilities. This study also highlighted some of the key internationalisation challenges facing emerging market small- and medium-sized enterprises (EMSMEs), underlining the importance of business networks and capabilities.Social implicationsNevertheless, this study shares useful and practical discoveries concerning the internationalisation process of BT&C firms from the emerging market, focussing on entry modes, psychic distance, business network, the challenges faced and the required capabilities.Originality/valueThe study provides new insights into service internationalisation in SMEs from an emerging market. The application of internationalisation theories to the BT&C industry in an emerging market is analysed.

Abstract:
Based on DL theory, this paper discusses and studies the early warning of enterprise financial risks in detail. And put forward a new enterprise financial risk early-warning model. The purpose is to enable enterprises to better analyze the changing trend of financial data, make correct decisions by managers and investors of enterprises, and promote the stable development of national economy and enterprises. This model is based on the early-warning theory of enterprises, based on the financial statements, business plans, and other relevant accounting information of enterprises, using accounting, finance, and marketing theories, adopting the methods of ratio analysis, comparative analysis, factor analysis, etc., to warn the financial risks of enterprises. This paper uses a lot of data to train the parameters of the DL financial early-warning model and then verifies the established financial early-warning model. In order to verify the reliability of this model, this model is compared with other two financial early-warning models. The results show that the prediction accuracy of this model is as high as 94%, which is 8~15% higher than that of other models. In this paper, the DL method has been applied to financial risk early warning and achieved good results. It has certain theoretical and practical significance in the field of enterprise financial early warning.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012.
South Africa has a complex financial and retail service industry with high reliance on the use of IT systems to ensure effectiveness and maintainability. Decision making and improved outcomes may be done through an IT aligned enterprise architecture (EA) strategy. EA is a capability that contributes to the support and success of an organisations' IT. Organisations are currently using EA to better align IT and the business strategy which provides a comprehensive v.ew of the IT system. Thus, EA is increasing in organisations yet the measurement and value of EA is limited to organisations and enterprise architects. The discussions of the benefits and value of EA has been discussed for several years, however there are still no consensus about how the benefits and value of EA can be measured. The lack and clear understanding of the benefits and value of EA needs to consider different aspects of IT as well as the shareholders when measuring the benefits and value of EA to an organisation.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on efficient provisioning of resilient Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. It first confirms the intuition that network resources can be more efficiently utilized when resilience mechanisms are implemented by a network provider in the physical network than by its VPN customers in their VPNs. Next, a Multiprotocol Label Switching-based programmable VPN architecture is presented that delivers virtual links as resilient quality of service (QoS) connections and virtual sites. Virtual sites allow customers to implement functionality like customized routing and content adaptation ???in the cloud???, as opposed to the current network model where all functionality is implemented at the network edge. To provision a resilient QoS connection, two paths need to be computed from the ingress to the egress nodes, such that both paths meet the given QoS constraints. Two different frameworks have been proposed in the literature to compute resilient QoS connections when the QoS constraints are bandwidth and end-to-end delay. They both use a preprocessing step whereby either all links with less residual capacity than the given bandwidth constraint are pruned, or the given end-to-end delay is converted to an effective bandwidth. The frameworks thus reduce the problem to one with only a single constraint. We argue in this thesis that these frameworks individually lead to poor network utilization and propose a new framework where both constraints are considered simultaneously. Our framework exploits the dependency between endto- end delay, provisioned bandwidth and chosen path through using the provisioned bandwidth as a variable. Here, two link-disjoint paths are computed together with their respective minimum bandwidths such that both the bandwidth and end-to-end delay constraints are satisfied. Given our framework we first propose a new generic algorithm that decomposes the problem into subproblems where known algorithms can be applied. Then we propose two new linear programming (LP) formulations that return the two paths and their respective bandwidths such that they have the minimum combined cost. To make our framework applicable in a production environment, we develop two new algorithms with low run times that achieve even higher network performance than their LP formulation counterpart. These algorithms systematically use an algorithm that computes non-resilient QoS connections. As no algorithm for computing nonresilient QoS connections with sufficiently low run time has been proposed in the current literature we develop two new algorithms and their respective heuristics with a run time comparable to Dijkstra???s shortest-path algorithm. Our simulations show that exploiting the dependency between end-to-end delay, provisioned bandwidth and chosen path can significantly improve the network performance.

Abstract:
Thesis (MAcc (Accountancy))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
The purpose of this assignment is to ascertain whether the COBIT framework is an adequate framework to assist in the governance of virtual private networks. The assignment focuses on whether the framework can ensure the identification of virtual private network-related risks and address IT compliance with policies and statutory regulations. A brief summary of the risks and issues pertaining to the pre-implementation, implementation and post-implementation phases of virtual private networks is included in the assignment. These risks and issues are then individually mapped onto a relevant COBIT control objective. The scope of the assignment does not include the intricacies of how these networks operate, the different types of network topologies or the different technologies used in virtual private networks. It was found that the COBIT framework can be implemented to manage and/or mitigate virtual private network risks.

Full text
Abstract:
Information Security is currently viewed from a technical point of view only. Some authors believe that Information Security is a process that involves more than merely Risk Management at the department level, as it is also a strategic and potentially legal issue. Hence, there is a need to elevate the importance of Information Security to a governance level through Information Security Governance and propose a framework to help guide the Board of Directors in their Information Security Governance efforts. IT is a major facilitator of organizational business processes and these processes manipulate and transmit sensitive customer and financial information. IT, which involves major risks, may threaten the security if corporate information assets. Therefore, IT requires attention at board level to ensure that technology-related information risks are within an organization’s accepted risk appetite. However, IT issues are a neglected topic at board level and this could bring about enronesque disasters. Therefore, there is a need for the Board of Directors to direct and control IT-related risks effectively to reduce the potential for Information Security breaches and bring about a stronger system of internal control. The IT Oversight Committee is a proven means of achieving this, and this study further motivates the necessity for such a committee to solidify an organization’s Information Security posture among other IT-related issues.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Big data is an emerging technology and its use holds great potential and benefits for organisations. The governance of this technology is something that is still a big concern and as aspect for which guidance to organisations wanting to use this technology is still lacking. In this study an extensive literature review was conducted to identify and define the business imperatives distinctive of an organisation that will benefit from the use of big data. The business imperatives were identified and defined based on the characteristics and benefits of big data. If the characteristics and benefits are clear, the relevant technology will be better understood. Furthermore, the business imperatives provide business managers with guidance to whether their organisation will benefit from the use of this technology or not. The strategic and operational risks related to the use of big data were also identified and they are discussed in this assignment, based on a literature review. The risks specific to big data are highlighted and guidance is given to business managers as to which risks should be addressed when using big data. The risks are then mapped against COBIT 5 (Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology) to highlight the processes most affected when implementing and using big data, providing business managers with guidance when governing this technology.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005
The Internet was functioning on Internet protocol (IP) and transmission control protocol (TCP) in the 1970s and soon afterwards electronic mail (email) was invented allowing messages to be sent from one person to another using packet switch services (PSS). However email did not form an information space for information to permanently exist. The World Wide Web (Web) arrived in the late 1980s, riding on top of the Internet providing a global and persistent information space available to everyone. This information space has assisted in small business facing dramatic change, often referred to as the 'e-commerce evolution'. Compared to the industrial revolution with the advent of the railways and electricity the magnitude of ecommerce is no less. Advances in the information technology (or e-comrnerce elements) and the use of Information systems (or applications) are the main drivers behind this e-commerce evolution. Some authors believe all businesses will be equal in the utilisation of e-commerce eroding any competitive advantage the one may have over the other. The 'digital economy' is now available with the explosive popularity of the Internet and the Web as seminal applications of e-commerce. In South Africa the maturity level of e-commerce adoption has increased from skepticism to positivism since the world wide availability of the Internet. Although e-commerce has generated a profusion of articles in South Africa, there has been a lack of research into the effects and benefits of e-commerce utilisation by small business. Various elements of e-commerce are explored highlighting the suitability of use towards a small business. This stUdy will explain the fundamentals that small business owners will need to understand to enable them to knowledgably participate in the global phenomenon of e-commerce. Authors nationally and internationally have explored the applications of e-commerce for example email and electronic data interchange (EDI).

Social electronic enterprises (e-enterprises) are an important part of the global business environment, which have developed from technological innovations that have enabled businesses to create and sustain financial endeavors that have an integrated social aspect. Part of the increase of social e-enterprises has been led by mobile social networks growing in popularity as people utilize mobile communication technology to communicate with stakeholders that are part of their social network. This form of community interactivity represents a technology innovation that has a strong combined business and social potential. This has enabled mobile social networks to form part of a social e-enterprises computer mediated communication that impacts the way technology is marketed to people. The purpose of this chapter is to review the existing research on technological innovations in social e-enterprise and mobile social networks by providing a set of research propositions that can be used to understand the adoption of social technology innovations. Suggestions for future research and practical marketing implications of social technological innovations in the context of facilitating social e-enterprise through mobile social communities are also stated.

Abstract:
The new (e)commerce/(e)business paradigms forced enterprises to undertake important transformations and reorganizations. It happened with the web and will be repeated in the Cloud and social networks, following Eric Schmidt’s (Google CEO) thoughts, “better thinking now on WWC – World Wide Computer, that is, what is behind u-commerce, ubiquity”. The tourism is no more only a traditional commercial activity but ever more social- and information-oriented. The tourism services need to be effective to be aligned with tourist requirements. The globalization and easy access allows tourists to change their plans constantly. Dynamic services reconfiguration and resulting impact on their information systems need to be supported. The theme here presented explores new tourism services requirements as the ubiquity and dynamic reconfiguration, new brokering mechanisms, and reliable integration processes, and human-to-human synchronous collaboration allow the natural involvement of the tourist on the co-creation of his activity plan with other agents (humans).

Abstract:
Information Technology is one of the most rapidly developing areas in the technological world. In fact, the classical information technology that has been based on computer technology is now very quickly converging with telecommunication. Wireless networking, especially mobile telecommunications, has been one of the leading areas in business and technology during the last five years. The state-of-the art in mobile telecommunication has reached a point, where new products are introduced within a cycle of one year. The next big step shall be the introduction of wireless multimedia services through next generation wireless networks. The standardization of wireless multimedia systems is a very difficult task, as the standards shall include the crucial points in the two domains, telecommunications and information technology. It is becoming more and more difficult to recruit enough expertise for the technical committees to produce high quality standards in the converging information technology and telecommunication market domain. In this chapter, we will be using this domain as an example for the standardization difficulties of future. The reasons have to be strong for initiating a standardization process, especially concerning industry, due to the fact that it is rather expensive to produce new and extensive standards. It has been estimated that the expenses of developing a single part of the Ethernet standards amount to approx. $10,000,000 (Spring & Weiss, 1994). The main development costs arise from the time, travel and salaries of the committee members. The standardization expenses are usually prohibitive for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). If the standardization organizations and committees can not guarantee that the investments done towards standardization are worthwhile we will have lots of problems in the future.
