Abstract:
This work is framed in the research of business failure. We examine a method of analyzing the dynamics of financial failure. The authors examine a method of analyzing the dynamics of financial failure, because our goal is to analyze how the economic and financial indicators show the risk of failure in a group of companies. Using a sample of 163 companies declared bankrupt or dissolved, the authors show how to depict company trajectories of behavior and movement to terminal failure. They analyze these trajectories to find and describe empirical evidence of the different dynamics of bankruptcy. The authors also show that the estimation of failure risk is more accurate when these different failure trajectories are defined. In conclusion, the authors can see that there are different failure trajectories. One can use these different trajectories to identify more efficiently the indicators warning of the failure risk of the companies analyzed.

Abstract:
Pioneering is meant to create a competitive advantage for businesses and yet imitations are accelerating globally, leaving businesses not knowing whether to pioneer or imitate. The purpose of this study was to make an analysis of the benefits and costs of pioneering and imitation, with the aim of possibly helping businesses to decide on which route to take, after considering their strengths and weaknesses. This was a desk research study which analyzed literature on business imitation and pioneering. It focused on imitation driven by technology; be it in products or services with a bias towards legal innovative imitation. The analysis was primarily dominated by literature obtained from developed countries because of the rich pool of research output on both concepts. Based on the findings, the paper concludes that most businesses are innovative imitations and technology has facilitated most of these imitations. Recommendations are that businesses should adopt innovative imitation, but do so legally and ethically. There is also need for more research studies on business imitation in order to come up with strategies that will accommodate global players. Keywords: pioneers, competitive advantage, innovative imitation, global players, first mover. JEL Classification: L26, M19

Abstract:
Purpose – Using 12 case studies, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of business analysis techniques in BPR. Some techniques are used more than others depending on the fit between the technique and the problem. Other techniques are preferred due to their versatility, easy to use, and flexibility. Some are difficult to use requiring skills that analysts do not possess. Problem analysis, and business process analysis and activity elimination techniques are preferred for process improvement projects, and technology analysis for technology problems. Root cause analysis (RCA) and activity-based costing (ABC) are seldom used. RCA requires specific skills and ABC is only applicable for discrete business activities. Design/methodology/approach – This is an exploratory case study analysis. The author analyzed 12 existing business reengineering (BR) case studies from the MIS literature. Cases include, but not limited to IBM Credit Union, Chase Manhattan Bank, Honeywell Corporation, and Cigna. Findings – The author identified eight business analysis techniques used in business process reengineering. The author found that some techniques are preferred over others. Some possible reasons are related to the fit between the analysis technique and the problem situation, the ease of use-of-use of the chosen technique, and the versatility of the technique. Some BR projects require the use of several techniques, while others require just one. It appears that the problem complexity is correlated with the number of techniques required or used. Research limitations/implications – Small sample sizes are often subject to criticism about replication and generalizability of results. However, this research is a good starting point for expanding the sample to allow more generalizable results. Future research may investigate the deeper connections between reengineering and analysis techniques and the risks of using various techniques to diagnose problems in multiple dimensions. An investigation of fit between problems and techniques could be explored. Practical implications – The author have a better idea which techniques are used more, which are more versatile, and which are difficult to use and why. Practitioners and academicians have a better understanding of the fit between technique and problem and how best to align them. It guides the selection of choosing a technique, and exposes potential problems. For example RCA requires knowledge of fishbone diagram construction and interpreting results. Unfamiliarity with the technique results in disaster and increases project risk. Understanding the issues helps to reduce project risk and increase project success, benefiting project teams, practitioners, and organizations. Originality/value – Many aspects of BR have been studied but the contribution of this research is to investigate relationships between business analysis techniques and business areas, referred to as BR dimensions. The author try to find answers to the following questions: first, are business analysis techniques used for BR project, and is there evidence that BR affects one or more areas of the business? Second, are BR projects limited to a single dimension? Third, are some techniques better suited for diagnosing problems in specific dimensions and are some techniques more difficult to use than others, if so why?; are some techniques used more than others, if so why?

Abstract:
This article investigates the effect of business confidence index (which is a measure of company managers’ optimism and pessimism toward their near-future business performance) on demand for international business travels. The model is empirically tested for 40 countries from 2004 to 2016. Using the first-difference generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation method, the results show that when managers of local businesses become more optimistic about their business performance, they travel more to other countries to search for more business opportunities in international markets. We also find that business confidence has a positive impact on outgoing business tourism expenditures. Our findings provide some important implications for tourism authorities and operators, macroeconomic policy makers, and airline managers.

Abstract:
Subject. The study determines directions for developing the business activity in the Russian regions. Methods. The study is based on the systems approach and methods of statistical, neural network and cluster analysis. Results. I review the current aspects of the regional business development when business rules are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The article scrutinizes the concept of entrepreneurship in terms of historical development and legal status. Having conducted the content analysis of the business activity in a lagging region of the Russian Federation, I found its highest concentration, with small businesses (and microbusinesses) taking the lead and maintaining the employment. Businesses tend to trade in goods of other producers, thus decreasing the average headcount for smaller businesses, including microbusinesses. Studying the hierarchy of economic activity types small businesses engage in by share of investment in the capital stock (in terms of new and imported fixed assets), I note the unprofitable investment n such foreign trade activities, such as Agriculture, forestry, hunting, fisheries and fish farming, and Construction. The dynamism of small businesses drops earlier, longer and deeper if compared to sole proprietors. In a lagging region, smaller business forms can evolve only if they deal with trade. Conclusions and Relevance. The content analysis of the Russian regional business gave an understanding of its development limits from perspectives of a lagging region, which determines the growth rates of business activity in Russia. The content analysis reveals high growth rates of trade in goods that smaller businesses sell, without being their producers. The findings contribute to the knowledge and competence of specialists working for the Russian Ministry of Economic Development to make consistent managerial decisions concerning the distribution and redistribution of investment resources.

Abstract:
Previous studies have shown that organizational and environmental factors such as start-up size, number of establishments, start-up year, geographic location, and industry are all significant determinants of a businesss survival rate. However, the link between survival rates and the legal structure of businesses has not been established. This analysis of new and existing high-tech businesses between the years of 1998 and 2009 reveals that given the same organizational characteristics and environmental factors, businesses legally structured as sole proprietorships and partnerships had significantly lower survival rates than did businesses structured as corporations or other organization types. Corporations had the lowest mortality rate among all groups. In comparison, partnerships exited at a 50 percent higher rate than did corporations, while sole proprietorships exited at twice the rate of corporations. This paper models hazard rates over the lifetime of a business and shows that businesses tend to have the highest mortality rates in their second and third years of operation, after which exit rates decrease at a logarithmic rate. Sole proprietorships, however, do not follow this trend as their mortality rate was highest in their first year of operation. In addition, impacts on survivorship of high-tech businesses due to start-up size, number of establishments, industry, and location are measured and compared with findings from previous studies.

Abstract:
In recent years, to a large extent the emergence and development of micro businesses has shown the gaps of comparative advantages between large and medium sized enterprises and small enterprises. Owing to its economics of scope in production, micro businesses contribute to the development and prosperity of the overall market. For the multinational micro business, it is exposed to associated micro political risks in a foreign market in different developing stages (i.e. startup, developing, and mature periods). However, literature review indicates that little work has been done to assess and manage the political risks of multinational micro businesses, let alone provide the multi-stage analysis. To address this problem, this paper develops a multi-stage data envelopment analysis (MSDEA) model to investigate the influence of micro political risks on the efficiency of multinational micro businesses. The main influence factors of the micro political risks in the host country in different stages of startup, developing, and mature periods have been modeled by the MSDEA, to provide new perspectives on the influence mechanism of micro political risk on the multinational micro business. Then the decision makers can assess their companies’ micro political risks in different stages and hence develop target-oriented risk prevention policies. Empirical analysis has been implemented in this paper, along with discussion of potential strategies on assessment and management of the micro political risks for multinational micro businesses. The analysis results demonstrate that the factor of labor conditions was the critical one in the development of the multinational micro business in the startup stage. Good labor conditions may be more likely to avoid micro political risk. The factor of the congruence with national economic interests and goals also impacted the development of the multinational micro business in the startup stage. Hence, the findings of this work could provide valuable reference for multinational micro businesses in restraining the micro political risk.

Abstract:
Home-scale business or doing business from home by family members is one choice to sustain people’s economy during the covid pandemic. With the advance of digital technologies, these home-scale businesses should be performed through digital platforms or social media. With proper utilisation, social media can increase the profits of these businesses. The purpose of this article is to analyse how social media can generate profit for small scale businesses. The data were obtained from the sales reports of three home-scale businesses in Jakarta, which specialized in selling traditional snacks. From the data, we analyzed the profit earned from each of the social media used (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Word of Mouth) to find out which media generated the most profit for their business. We found that the highest profit for home scale business came from Instagram because promotion through Instagram resulted in the highest number of items sold. The findings signify that using the right social media can generate maximum profit. However, the use of social media as digital marketing tool should depend on the habits and control of the business owner over the media.

Abstract:
The paper considers and analyzes the reasons for the decline in lending in Ukraine. Bank business lending in Ukraine is characterized by high cost; the world's worst quality loans. Moreover, the low profitability (and even loss) of most businesses leads to a small number of creditworthy businesses. It is determined that for the first time in the history of observation, lending in UAH equivalent decreased in 2019. And the results of the calculations revealed that the strengthening of the hryvnia makes only half of the impact. Another factor is the decline in new lending. Based on the materials of banks' balance sheets and the content of their sites, the banks were identified where the lending decreased most significantly. The lending conditions are clearly less attractive than in banks where lending is increasing. A study of the data of the Bank of International Settlements showed that among the 43 countries of the world, as of 01.04.2019, the leaders in the growth of business lending are countries that show high economic growth, that is, mainly, emerging market economies. The paper hypothesizes that there is a positive effect of non-financial banking lending on economic innovation (measured through the Global Innovation Index), which is statistically confirmed. Also there was found a causal relationship between the fact a significant increase in business loans and a change in the country's Doing Business rating. For example, reducing credit indicators in the country by 8-18% per year lowers the ease of doing business by 4-6 positions. In this study there were generalized steps to overcome the reasons for the decline in lending in Ukraine and the desirable actions of bank employees in such conditions (sufficient diversification of loans by industry, active use of scenario analysis of customer business development, etc.). This made it clear that without significant involvement of the state, significant shifts in the area of business lending cannot be expected. Abstract:
The article analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business activities in Ukraine and the world and its financial security. The analysis showed that the economy of Ukraine, like most countries in the world, has suffered significant losses from the introduction of anti-epidemic restrictions on business activities, which manifested itself in falling GDP, industrial production index, investment activity. Due to the temporary or complete cessation of business, the unemployment rate has increased significantly. The pandemic crisis also harmed enterprises' financial results, which declined significantly in all economic activities, especially in industry, transport, temporary accommodation, and catering, where the share of unprofitable enterprises reaches 73%. Thus, the problem of ensuring the financial security of business becomes relevant. The work aims to develop methodological approaches to assessing the impact of the pandemic crisis on businesses' financial security and to identify effective ways to ensure such security. The research used scientific abstraction, comparative and systematic analysis and synthesis, systematization, and logical generalization. It was determined that small and medium-sized businesses were most affected by the pandemic, where more than 60% of entrepreneurs had a strong negative impact. Large businesses suffered less, but they also suffered significant losses due to declining business activity and demand in domestic and foreign markets. The pandemic had the least impact on agriculture, which suffered the least losses, primarily due to the slight impact of restrictions on this business's activities. The paper systematized the risks arising from the pandemic crisis factors and identified their manifestations and financial consequences for the business. Studies have shown that such effects manifest themselves in the form of total or partial loss of profits, problems with debt repayment, reduced financial stability, liquidity, increased receivables, increased costs of anti-epidemic measures, and so on. Thus, the procedure for assessing the business's financial security is to take into account all the factors that shape the financial position of businesses during a pandemic crisis.
