Gallagher, Robert B. "Analysis of the Small Business Administration 8(a) business development program." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/45857.
Full textThe objective of this project is to examine the current Small Business Administration 8(a) Business Development Program related to contracts awarded by the United States government. As a result of this project, the United States government will gain perspective on the utilization and effectiveness of the 8(a) program. The intent of the Small Business Administration 8(a) Business Development Program is to help socially and economically disadvantaged small businesses gain access to federal contracting opportunities. Government Accountability Office and Inspector General official reports suggest that the 8(a) program lacks management oversight and is susceptible to fraud, waste, and abuse. This research provides an analysis of contracts awarded under the 8(a) program by the Department of Defense in the United States from fiscal years 2008 through 2014. This research analyzes whether or not the 8(a) program’s industrial base is expanding and if the program is being abused by private industry. Further analysis of randomly selected contracts is conducted to analyze if the contracts were awarded to certified 8(a) contractors and identify if the program is being utilized as intended.

Full textAs the baby boom generation approaches and enters traditional retirement ages, the owners of small professional service firms are being inundated with advice concerning how to implement a business succession plan. While much of the advice may be valuable and sound, a significant portion of this advice appears to be derived from a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores, or fails to address, the needs, desires, and personal characteristics of the business owner. Small business succession planning advice often involves growing the business into a self-perpetuating organism. However, many small business owners may not want to do what is necessary to manage a business for optimum succession planning. The researcher used a quantitative research methodology to identify antecedents to business succession planning in small, relationship-dependent service businesses. The research combines concepts from the Theory of Planned Behavior and from the family business succession planning literature to identify potential owner characteristic and situational antecedents to business succession planning. The study focused on a sample population of owners of small financial-services businesses affiliated with one broker-dealer. Most of the sample population offers tax and accounting services in addition to their financial services. The population is in the business of planning for their customers but to a large extent neglect or choose not to plan for their own ultimate exit from the business. While business owners face many choices and obstacles in preparing their firms for their eventual exit, this study indicates that the decision to pursue business succession planning by the owners of small, relationship-dependent service businesses is overwhelmingly driven by the business owners’ perception of the availability of a qualified successor. Thus the decision to pursue business succession planning by this sample population is more likely to be a reaction to circumstances than a proactive choice driving the owners’ business decisions.
Mace, Richard. "Business model innovation, business model enablers and the strategic agility paradox." Thesis, Capella University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10254836.
Full textBusiness model innovation, business model enablers, and strategic agility are terms explicitly evaluated and explored by researchers and practitioners. The focus of this dissertation research project included the previous terms and the respective associations with business and leadership decision-making in the context of strategy and innovation. Research design and methodologies included a qualitative, embedded, single case-study through one-on-one, in-depth interviews with primary decision-makers from small technology companies in Minnesota, United States. Primary respondent qualifications were: (a) minimum of five years of experience, (b) minimum of five subordinates, and (c) decision power to influence business model innovation, business model enablers, or strategic agility. Three research questions guided the project: (1) How do the pillars of strategic agility (strategic sensitivity, leadership unity, and resource fluidity) affect business model innovations? (2) How can managers apply the pillars of strategic agility to enhance organizational strategic agility? and (3) How do senior leadership teams manage the contradictions and paradoxes within strategic agility? Respondent interviews were imported and analyzed through Nvivo qualitative data analytics software (QDAS). Over 50 findings are narrated in Chapter 4, of which included one of the key findings: Every company was actively engaged in the paradox, but none of the company leaders specifically calculated or processed the exact phrase – strategic agility paradox. Proposed in Chapter 5 are the set of recommendations for future researchers. The recommendations advocate research in or on contrasting industries and geographies, respondents with contrasting profiles, supplementary qualitative and quantitative techniques, alternative strategic agility pillars, and new research questions.

Full textMany small businesses in the United States declare bankruptcy within the first 5 years of starting operations. Small business leaders may avoid bankruptcy if they would take advantage of the financial benefits associated with entering the business process outsourcing (BPO) market as service providers. BPO service providers in the United States have experienced significant revenue increases since entering this growing market. This multicase study was an exploration of the strategies small business leaders use to enter the BPO market as service providers to increase revenue and reduce the likelihood of bankruptcy in the metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, area. The multicase population consisted of 4 small business leaders from 3 companies who successfully entered the BPO market as service providers and increased revenue. The conceptual framework for this study was the resource-based view theory. The data collection process included semistructured interviews, interview notes, and company records. Data were compiled and organized, disassembled into fragments, reassembled into sequence of groups, and interpreted for meaning. Methodological triangulation and member checking validated the trustworthiness of those interpretations. Three themes emerged from the data collected: using professional resources and personal skills to enter the BPO market; entering into trade contracts with BPO clients; and establishing and building on relationships with BPO clients. The implications for positive social change include the potential to increase the success rate of small businesses, improve and revitalize the economic and social conditions of the local community by providing jobs.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the development of a management framework that allows organisations to gradually evolve into a full-fletched B2B e-business. Every manager considering the implementation of a B2B e-business system as part of his business plan, need a rigorous approach for the successful implementation thereof. The successful planning and managing of e-business investments are of the utmost importance to sustain and create more shareholder value for the future. The main hypothesis stated by the author is that a framework is required to guide managers with the re-organisation necessary throughout the life cycle (including planning, implementation and sustaining) of a B2B e-business model. The author believes that this framework will contribute to organisations enhancing competitive position and thus, unlocking more shareholder value.

Muniz, Andrew Everardo. "The retention of tacit knowledge in higher learning administration." Thesis, Baker College (Michigan), 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3568224.
Full textHigher education institutions (HEIs) could be among organizations without effective programs for preserving tacit knowledge (TK) when knowledge workers retire, quit, take a leave of absence, or are terminated. The theoretical underpinnings of this study were neuroscience related to brain learning physiology, transformational leadership theory, succession planning theory, and knowledge management theory. Research questions addressed (a) what is the level of awareness of the role of tacit knowledge in the administration of higher education, (b) what methods exist for capturing, sharing, and creating tacit knowledge that can be effectively integrated in succession planning, and (c) what unique elements exist in the administration of higher-education that either support or prevent tacit knowledge preservation, sharing, and creation through succession planning initiatives. Data collection involved interviews and document review at a Midwestern college. Findings included the need for trust and open communication and leader behavior to support optimal TK transfer. Participants were aware of TK and its importance and recognized a connection between TK and succession planning. Participants suggested high level activities; emphasized debriefing for verifying TK transfer, transfer of roles and responsibilities over time, continued access to mentors, and allocation of adequate time to deploy these steps in succession planning. The researcher developed a nine-step process model for integrating TK in institutions with a formal succession planning program. This process model includes organization-wide education and communication focused on the concepts of TK and involves steps for capture, measurement, and sustained retention of all forms of TK as part of institutional culture.
Norris-Jones, Renee. "Relationships Between Business Performance Variables and Solo Criminal Law Practitioner Business Success." Thesis, Walden University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10638890.
Full textGrowing numbers of America’s 1,281,432 active licensed attorneys open their own law firms due to strained employment opportunities. With 50% of small businesses failing within 5 years, and solo law offices accounting for 75% of attorneys in private practice, there is a need for preparing solo criminal law practitioners for business success. Some solo criminal law practitioners do not understand the critical business performance variables that impact small business success. The total population for this quantitative correlational study included solo criminal law practitioners from the Philadelphia Bar Association Legal Directory and Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers members. Barney’s resource-based theory (RBV) and Lussier’s nonfinancial success-failure business prediction model were the foundational frameworks of this study. I used Lussier’s nonfinancial success-failure questionnaire to collect data via a self-administered survey. A Kendall tau correlation was used to determine the relationship between Lussier’s 16 independent variables measuring success or failure and a single dependent variable of ‘level of profits’ for the 31 participants. 31 participants (4%) is a very low response rate. Increased participation is needed for better research results. Fifteen of the 16 variables showed no relationships with the level of success. Only 1 hypothesis showed a relationship between the type of start-up plan developed by the firm and the level of success (τ = .322, p = .032). The findings from this study support the Small Business Association’s definition of a business plan as a living roadmap for business success. The implications for positive social change include the potential to increase employment opportunities by directly impacting the economy in creating economic expansion.

Full textOne of the essential industries in every economy is health care. Slow economic growth risks a country with lousy health systems and policies. The private health industry has risen rapidly in recent years and is now a key source of health care for many people. However, the performance of several of these institutions has been declining due to factors such as inadequate medical care, medical malpractice, carelessness, rising medical costs, and the employment of unqualified workers. These concerns have resulted in poor service delivery, a negative public image, and customer attrition, leading to a drop in private hospital performance. The primary purpose of this study is to look into ways to improve the efficiency of private hospital business administration. Textbooks, journals, related literature, and the internet were used for this research. The study concluded that inadequate financing and insufficient internally generated revenue are due to improper record keeping, clearly defined objectives, and effective leadership. Bureaucracy and government meddling in management decisions add to the challenges posed by hospital administrators. In most hospitals, workforce training and development are ineffective. Furthermore, this study recommended that Transparency, accountability and the decision-making process all require performance evaluation to improve through the adoption of best practices. Hospitals must be evaluated for their effectiveness and efficiency to secure long-term support. The review of these two characteristics contributes to resource allocation optimization in healthcare, which improves economic and social well-being.
