Abstract:
The second election of President Bush is the climax of twelve years of successful activity by the Republicans. Rarely before could an American president rely on a majority in both houses of the Congress. Consequently, Bush has ever since his re-election conveyed the impression that he is committed to follow the paths he had taken during his first term at home and in international affairs without any concessions. Therefore, also his new initiatives towards Europe seem to be aimed only to improve the transatlantic atmosphere but not to develop a more cooperative American foreign policy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As part of an investigation into traditional Australian Aboriginal bush medicine a range of Acacia species have been examined. Several species have been reported to be utilised for the preparation of antimicrobial washes and lotions by Aboriginal tribes. Initial bioactivity screening focussed on antimicrobial activity of the polar/and or non-polar extracts of air dried plant material, and a range of interesting activity has been found. Specifically, of the 94 extracts of Acacia species screened, five showed activity against the fungus C.albicans, 47 showed activity showed activity against the gram positive bacteria S.aureus and five showed activity against the gram negative bacteria E.coli. A retrosynthetic analysis and total synthesis of the novel anisidine alkaloid isolated from Acacia trineura was attempted. A variety of methodologies to generate the lithiate of anisidine and subsequently trap with an appropriate electrophile were attempted. While the results only indicated which methods were appropriate, they did give strong leads for future work in this direction

Abstract:

Abstract:
One way to investigate what animals in captivity   might need is to conduct preference and motivational tests. These types of   tests can help facilitate the animals to express different priorities. The   motivation can be assessed by having the animals “pay an entry cost” (e.g.   push a weighted door) that increases with time to get access to a resource.   The highest price that the animals are willing to pay for this resource is   called “the maximum price paid”. This study intends to test the maximum price   paid to access for food in a group of bush dogs kept at Kolmården Wildlife   Park. A simple choice test consisting of four different food items (meat,   fish, vegetables and fruit) was first conducted to establish which resource   the bush dogs preferred. The results showed that meat and fish were the   preferred food items. Secondly, a push-door test was conducted to measure the   maximum price paid for the preferred food item. At the most, one individual   was willing to lift 11 kg (twice its weight) to get access to meat.

Dias, Caio Gracco Pinheiro. "Contra a Doutrina \"Bush\": preempção, prevenção e direito internacional." Universidade de São Paulo, 2007. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/2/2135/tde-30072007-155126/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis intends to refute the so-called \"Bush Doctrine\", whose terms have been laid down in the National Security Strategy of the United States of America in 2002, and have since then oriented the present Administration\'s foreign policy towards a greater assertiveness of military power against either present or future threats to its dominant position in international relations, in particular its proposition of a right to preemptive self-defense. In this respect, this thesis advance two central claims: 1) that, contrary to what the actual terms in which this doctrine is formulated might want to suggest, it is not a policy of preemptive strikes that is being proposed, but one of prevention, which is beyond the reach of the legal right of self-defense; 2) that any policy of unilateral preventive strikes is contrary to the maintenance of order in the present international system. In order to support this claims, in the first part of the thesis, the philosophical and political justification of the right to self-defense is examined, the recognition of such a right in actual normative systems emerging as a rational condition of their legitimacy, and an ideal concept of self-defense is advanced that results from the application to the claim to individual self-preservation of the requirements deriving from this justification: an actual aggression and the concrete necessity of the means employed in the defense; in the second part of the thesis, the regulation of self-defense by international law, specially through the Charter of the United Nations, is explained, in the terms of which the legality of the Bush Doctrine\'s claim of preemptive self-defense is verified. Of this claim it is concluded that, at least in the way it is described by the National Security Strategy, it cannot be regarded as self-defense, because it does away with the necessary element of an actual aggression, either in progress or imminent, being in fact a variety of preventive use of force, the recourse to which should be restricted to an organ representing the community, in this case the Security Council of the United Nations, lest the prohibition of the recourse to force in international relations is relaxed. That notwithstanding, it is advanced that, as long as one understands preemption only as an early response to an imminent attack, it can be reconciled with the authorization to use force in self-defense, if subjected to some form of ex post control.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The U.S. foreign policy doctrine was submitted to an abrupt change after the events of September 11, 2001. The main focus of this work is the change in the strategy of democracy promotion; which varied from one based on example and persuasion to another that prefers the direct intervention and the use of force. We argue that pressures from the international system do not explain enough such transformation, and that the influence of ideas in the strategic adjustment of the foreign policy can provide a better explanation. We argue yet that, although the Bush Doctrine represents significant changes in several aspects, when favoring liberalism and democracy, fits perfectly the diplomatic tradition of the United States. The liberal influence on American foreign policy is evaluated by the content analysis of the President's and his Secretaries of State’s speeches. The conclusion is that democracy promotion is not just another foreign policy instrument; on the contrary, it is central to U.S. political identity and its sense of national purpose.

Shelley, Roger James. "‘SELBY WARREN: AUSTRALIAN BUSH ARTIST AND TRIBE OF ONE’." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/16844.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I have looked at the life and works of the Australian self-taught artist, Selby Warren, who was born in 1887 and spent his whole life in rural New South Wales near the small, inland city of Bathurst. Warren was typical of many self-taught artists in that he was completely untrained in art, unaware of the artworld and, having worked as a labourer, only began painting in earnest after semi-retiring at the age of seventy-six. Almost a decade later he was discovered by an art lecturer who introduced him to a city dealer and gallery owner and his work was exhibited in commercial galleries in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. During this brief (three year) period he was reasonably well known in art circles but this soon ended and he spent the remaining years of his life in his home town of Trunkey Creek. He died in 1979 aged 91. Warren exemplified the experiences shared by many self-taught artists both in Australia and overseas. I consider the events involved in the growth of interest in self-taught art and the ensuing influences it (and related phenomena like primitivism and primitive art) had on approaches to modern art movements from the turn of the twentieth-century until about 1980 in Europe, America and Australia. George Melly’s idea of the ‘tribe of one’ 1 and how it relates to artists like Warren and his ilk is explored. An analysis of Warren’s paintings and those of his Australian, European and American contemporaries is provided in a response to the view that it is the sometimes unusual lives rather than the output of self-taught artists that is too often used in the discussion of a unique, but not uncommon, art form.

Ochen, Eric. "An exposition of intra-bush and post-bush experiences of formerly abducted child mothers in Northern Uganda : issues in rehabilitation, resettlement and reintegration." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2011. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/13036/.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study explores the intra-bush and post-bush experiences of formerly abducted child mothers (FACM) in Northern Uganda. Critical events in the lives of young women who were abducted as young girls to join rebel soldiers in the recent civil war are examined. These critical events include sexual violation, training and participation in battles as child soldiers, motherhood, intra-bush trauma and, escape or release. The study also explores how the young women coped with life in the post-bush society they had rejoined. I examine approaches, resources and opportunities for the rehabilitation of returning FACM, their resettlement process and reintegration. The methodology borrows from narrative analysis, phenomenology and grounded theory with the main methods being in-depth interviews with FACM and key informants as well as focus groups with community members and agency staff. Structuration theory, African feminist theories, child rights discourse and a conceptual framework focusing on rehabilitation, resettlement and reintegration are utilized as lenses through which the experiences of the young women are viewed. Findings suggest that while the FACM demonstrated considerable agency in managing the challenges they came across both in the bush and in the post-bush periods, this agency was significantly curtailed by social structures. The young women‘s experiences, both in captivity and post-captivity were influenced by structural factors which were embedded within social systems and relationships. These factors formed the context for the lived realities of the young women which were in turn impacted by gender and culture. The FACM had to assume a multiplicity of roles and identities as girls, mothers, ‗wives‘, fighters, which interconnected with individual agency. This contributed to the strengths and resilience the young women possessed and also led to non-compliance with traditional cultural practices in some instances making reintegration more difficult. The main contributions of the study are: in its demonstration that some African cultural traditions have points of convergence with the promotion of children rights; in increasing understanding of the role of patriarchal and matriarchal power in social life; and in the revelation of the agency of the young women and their resistance to structural violence, although this agency was not adequate for protection from abuse. The study isolates not only individual but social agency which can be utilized to support rehabilitation, resettlement and reintegration planning. It raises the significance of the quality of personal relationships in carrying out interventions for FACM, sheds lights on the issues surrounding social rejection of the young women, where this occurs, and argues for interventions that build on their strengths and considers not only post-bush but intra-bush experiences.

Abstract:
The relations between the United States and Latin America between 1988 and 2008 had known a lot of upheavals. The different reasons which were at the origin of that were approached in this dissertation. After having studied the theorical stakes concerning their relations we asked ourself if foreign policy was a classic public policy. Then, we studied development aid’s specificities and a theory promoted by George W. Bush which is the « transformational diplomacy ». In a second part, we studied diplomatical upheavals appeared in some countries of the region, consequence of the election of left wing governments. Pages dedicated to the three programs worked out by Washington during the 2000’s (MCA, both Colombian plans and Merida Initiative) showed the originality but also their application and their reserved results so much from the point of view of the efficiency and the consolidation of the diplomatical relations with the countries of this region. At last, we described and analyzed the importance the energy challenges with Latin America for the United States and developed reasons which urge them to want to constitute the FTAA. This show The interweaving of the economic, diplomatic and security questions for the American decision-makers

Abstract:
This thesis examined all references to George Bush in Time, U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek in the time periods before and after the 1988 Republican National Convention in order to determine if there was a difference in how these newsmagazines portrayed Bush in these time periods. The hypothesis of this study: George Bush was portrayed more positively in the total coverage of these newsmagazines after the convention than he was portrayed prior to the convention. In order to determine this, a coder chose news stories from before and after the convention from the newsmagazines if they dealt primarily with the man George Bush or the campaign in general. All references to Bush were highlighted in the articles along with all statements made by Bush. Then, sources of these sentences with these references were determined and placed into one of three categories: newsmagazine, Bush or "Other." Coders were asked to evaluate the references to Bush as to whether the references placed Bush in a positive light, negative light or did not reflect him positively or negatively, neutral. The findings of this study show there was no apparent difference in the coverage of Bush between the time periods. The hypothesis was not supported. Additionally, the overall coverage of Bush was neutral and the newsmagazines were the source of the largest amount of references.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the religious/political relationship between George W. Bush (the 43rd President of the United States) and conservative Catholics. Served by the over-lapping ideology of conservatism it presents a unique insight into the pragmatic, strategic and functionary role each played in the political service of the other. Unlike other studies this work argues that conservative Catholics, not Evangelicals, were at the vanguard of Bush’s political drive. Although a transitory arrangement – centred around a select set of characters - the religious, ideological and political dynamic surrounding Bush was purposefully informed by careful, empirical analysis. Apprised by decades of examples: of challenges and changes, mistakes and opportunities, we see certain individuals move beyond ideas and analysis into coordinated organisation. The narrative of this transition, its players and outcomes argues that faith and politics deliberately negotiated with one another to strategically gain a moment for political traction. This negotiation was not, as has been frequently argued, a negotiation with religion or theology singularly in mind; but politics and policy. Mutual ideology, political affiliation and core aspects of their particular religious creeds facilitated this.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc (Biochemistry))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
Sutherlandia frutescens (S. frutescens), sub-species microphylla, is a member of the Fabacea family and is used as a herbal remedy for the treatment of several ailments which include influenza, diabetes, cancer, tuberculosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety, clinical depression, and more recently, those living with human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) (1-4). Many of the symptoms of these ailments are associated with a perturbation of the stress response which may be associated with disorders of the endocrine system. Of all the traditional plants in South Africa, S. frutescens is regarded the most profound in that it is a multipurpose traditional remedy. The plant has enjoyed a long history of use and reports indicating its efficacy as a safe treatment for various health conditions have added to the popularity of this medicinal plant. The extracts of S. frutescens have been shown to exhibit anti-proliferative effects on cancer cells, antioxidant activity, and to possess anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory potential (5, 6), providing scientific evidence for its therapeutic use in the treatment of cancer and diabetes. However, this study focuses on the potential use of this medicinal plant in the treatment of stress and stress related diseases. Chronic stress is characterized by elevated plasma levels of glucocorticoids. These steroid hormones are synthesized in the adrenal cortex in a series of reactions involving the steroidogenic enzymes. The major aim of this thesis was the determination of the influence of S. frutescens extracts on the adrenal cytochrome P450 enzymes. Aqueous, methanol and chloroform S. frutescens extracts were prepared and the interaction with the cytochrome P450 enzymes was investigated. The effect of these extracts towards progesterone (PROG), deoxycortisol and deoxycorticosterone (DOC) binding to the cytochrome P450 enzymes as well as their influence on the metabolism of these steroid substrates was investigated. A similar study (7) showed that compounds from the S. frutescens extracts could interact with these enzymes and possibly affect adrenal steroidogenesis. This study further investigates the bioactive properties of the plant material in terms of the influence of S. frutescens on the cytochrome P450 enzymes and the effect of the manufacturing process on the bioactivity of the plant.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Sc. (Chemistry)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016
In this study, antioxidant activity methodologies were evaluated in terms of analytical performances. The total antioxidant activity from Athrixia phylicoides leaves (Bush tea) determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging (DPPH•) method, cupric ion reducing power (CUPRAC) method and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Folin-Ciocalteu method was used to quantify total phenolic content (TPC) in Athrixia phylicoides leaves. The influence of chemical and physical parameters on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity determination were investigated. Results from direct sample and crude sample were compared. Antioxidant activity and phenolic content from Athrixia phylicoides leaves were compared with those from commercialised green tea, black tea and rooibos tea using two chosen antioxidant capacity method with acceptable characteristics. Results from the evaluation of the methods demonstrated excellent recoveries (99 to 103%) consistently, good linearity within the calibration concentration range (R2 = 0.997) and repeatable low coefficient of variation < 5% were indicative of good precision except for CV method. The average total antioxidant activity of various extracts of Athrixia phylicoides leaves ranged from 0.039 to 0.122 mg/mL (EC50), 0.031 to 0.233 mg/mL (EC50) and 339 to 429 mV (anodic potential) for DPPH method, CUPRAC method and CV method, respectively. The total antioxidant activity values for each Athrixia phylicoides samples determined by CUPRAC method were higher than the values produced by DPPH and CV methods. The highest antioxidant activities in the DPPH and CUPRAC methods were found in water extracts (direct sample). However, concentrated samples for DPPH method and CV gave a different trend with the methanol extract (crude sample) displaying the highest antioxidant capacity. Increasing the infusion time only increased total antioxidant activity determined by CUPRAC method, whilst DPPH and CV methods had the highest antioxidant activity in the lowest infusion time (3 min). Even though the results are inconclusive with regard to the effect of solid to solvent ratio effect on the total antioxidant activity, 1:150 ratio and 1:100 ratio extracts for both CUPRAC and DPPH methods and for CV gave the highest antioxidant capacities, respectively. The total antioxidant activities in pure antioxidant standards and in the teas were ranked in the following order by both CUPRAC and DPPH methods: Quercetin > catechin > Trolox and Chinese green tea > Joko black tea > Athrixia phylicoides leaves > Laager rooibos tea, respectively. Comparative study showed the necessity of employing more than one method, as each method for the same sample yielded different results. CUPRAC and DPPH methods displayed higher sensitivity and repeatability as compared to the CV method with poor precision.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the individual political leader is important for the analysis of international relations. Traditionally the focus of investigation in international relations has been on the nation-state, or the systems level, and as a result the individual level has been somewhat neglected. Using the theory of political psychology there is a possibility of finding nuances that might not be found if the focus of the investigation is on the nation-state. With the help of key concepts such as personality, emotion, cognition, and social identity decision making that has affected world politics have been examined. An empirical examination of the political psychology has been made by applying the theory to a case study, George W Bush. By applying the theory of political psychology to the decision making process used by George W Bush and his Administration it will be shown that the individual can impact world politics, especially in the case of the invasion of Iraq. Furthermore, one of the flaws of the theory of political psychology, its problem in handling the concept of global terrorism, is briefly discussed. The conclusion that has been drawn in this thesis is that the individual level of analysis is just as important as the systems level or the domestic level of analysis.

Abstract:
This thesis explores interfaces for locating and comprehending patterns among time-based materials in digital libraries. Time-based digital library materials are like other digital library materials in that they are comprised of data and metadata. In addition, they have a time or period of time attached to each data item. The specific focus of this thesis is on fine-granularity items-items that have relatively little data and cover brief periods of time. In such a context, people often are left to discern patterns of activity by retrospectively making sense of the collection or parts thereof. The specific domain chosen for the implementation is the daily diary of President George Bush, the 41st president of the USA. This project developed a searching and browsing interface, which allows people to study the relationship between activities and people in the library data. As part of this thesis, a corpus of the Presidential daily diary was digitized. Two interfaces were provided to this corpus, one based on a standard information retrieval engine (Greenstone) and another presenting time-based visualizations of data items. An evaluation was conducted to explore the relative strengths and weaknesses of these two interfaces.

Clark, Kristin. "Maple Sugar Bush Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Eastern Ontario, Canada." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20335.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the extent to which sugar bush management in Eastern Ontario might contribute to biodiversity maintenance and conservation and therefore be promoted as a form of rural sustainable development. Ontario government policy seeks to actively promote actions that strengthen the province’s rural communities and protect biodiversity. Therefore sustainable development is an important concept to encourage in rural areas. The production of maple syrup on sugar bushes has already been demonstrated to be economically, socially, and in some aspects ecologically sustainable. This study seeks to determine how the operation of sugar bushes might also contribute to ecological sustainability through the maintenance and conservation of forest biodiversity. I identified three documents published by the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF): a set of management principles for conserving biodiversity on private woodlots, a list of biodiversity indicators, and a manual for monitoring them. I monitored three of the biodiversity indicators (spring ephemerals, birds, and frogs) on three of the larger sugar bushes in the Eastern Ontario and established that the EOMF biodiversity monitoring practices and guidelines were suitable for working sugar bushes. Using the management principles for biodiversity conservation developed by the EOMF, I interviewed 22 sugar bush operators in Eastern Ontario. With these interviews I addressed two objectives: 1. To generate empirical information regarding the management practices of maple sugar bush operators in Eastern Ontario and to compare these with established management principles for forest biodiversity conservation in the region 2. To generate suggestions for woodlot operators and government policymakers alike about future opportunities for research and management decision-making. The results of the study show that although most operators do not have a formal management plan for their sugar bush, many of their management practices are consistent with prescribed biodiversity conservation principles. Sugar bush operators are receptive to conserving biodiversity on their properties. The findings suggest that through sound management and planning, small-scale commercial sugar bush operations generally can be made environmentally sustainable, and become important components in broader rural development strategies. This study provides new insights into how small-scale sugar bush management, when practiced well, is consistent with conservation principles and with sustainable development principles more generally. It shows how sugar bush operators in Eastern Ontario can help the province reach its goals of biodiversity conservation and rural development set out in Ontario’s Biodiversity Strategy (2005) and Ontario’s Rural Plan (2004).

Abstract:
This study analyzes the development of the United States security policy from the administrations of Bush to Obama. Its focus is directed towards significant continuities and changes in the context of political means, interests and approaches to international cooperation. The empirical data mainly consists of U.S. National Security Strategies issued in 2002, 2006 and 2010. Such strategies contain broad messages and, therefore, to help identify issues of special significance, a theoretical framework based on the perspectives of the international relations scholars John J. Mearsheimer and Joseph S. Nye is first developed.  The findings of the study show that the position of military power as the most prioritized political instrument in the U.S. remains stable. However, in an effort to promote the nation’s values, the new administration intends to make more use of soft power and less use of military power. Regarding its interests, defending the nation and handling military threats are still top priorities, and an important aspect is that the U.S. intends to maintain its global military superiority. Spreading democracy, respect for human rights and free trade in an open international economic system are also constant interests, but one notable development is that the national economy figures more prominently on the security agenda. Looking at the approaches for cooperation, it seems that unilateral military action is an option which is less likely to be used by the new administration. Furthermore, this administration places greater emphasis on the value of international institutions than the previous administration. Still, an important continuity is the intention of maintaining a clear leadership role and strongly advancing U.S. interests when cooperating internationally. To summarize, the two administrations security strategies indicate that governing interests are unchanged, but the new administration is aiming for a better balance of the tools of American power, and is communicating a less unilateral profile. Still, the presence of significant stable aspects reduces the level of change, and contributes to the impression that the U.S. is not developing a new course, but rather adjusting the current one.

Abstract:
At the heart of this exegesis is the city-bush gap and the rivalry and stereotypes that gap has generated. I acknowledge how and why our national identity evolved from the writing of the 1890s but I argue that most current artists, particularly novelists, have failed to incorporate the ongoing cultural, societal and industrial changes that have occurred since, particularly in the last thirty years. I assert that the majority of artists still refer to and draw inspiration from established, inaccurate myths and stereotypes rather than the bush and Australian characters of today. Through examining three texts, Kate Grenville's The Idea of Perfection (Picador, Sydney, 1999), Christos Tsiolkas's Loaded (Random House, Sydney, 1995) and Silences Long Gone (Picador, Sydney, 1998) by Anson Cameron, I also point out how most artists in general have failed to keep pace with changes in the bush city cross-culture. My exegesis attempts to give an account of some deficiencies in contemporary Australian literature. In the creative component of this project, Summer at Mount Hope (Duffy and Snellgrove, Sydney, 2005), I write, as did Anson Cameron in his book, Silences Long Gone, (Pan Macmillan, 1998) of a bush (in 1894) where city and bush rely on each other and technology pushes into the bush uniting city and bush, thus enhancing the economy, the cross cultural interdependence and advancing the commonality between the two. I replace stereotypical characters with less predictable characters whose traits sit easily in either bush or city culture and skew the Traditionalist role of bush and city.

Green, Edward John School of Social Work UNSW. "???Staying bush??? ??? a study of gay men living in rural areas." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Social Work, 2006. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/25706.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the experience of what it is to be a gay man and to live in a rural community. It sought to understand why gay men would want to live in places that are said to have a reputation for hostility towards them. The empirical data from the semi-structured interviews with twenty-one gay men living in fifteen small-town locations across New South Wales, Australia, was analysed using a qualitative method derived from phenomenology, ethnography and modified grounded theory. The distinctive findings of this thesis centre on these men???s desire and determination to stay in the bush. They chose to stay in rural locations and effectively employed a diverse range of strategies to both combat the difficulties of rural life and enhance its advantages. The bush was the place in which these men could find themselves, be themselves and also find others like themselves. The space and the isolation of the bush gave them the latitude and the scope to live gay lives. This is why they stayed. By staying, they were also able to live out both the homosexual and rural components of their personal and social identity. Building on a brief look at the Australian rural past, the conceptual framework utilises notions of ???the stranger??? and draws on resilience, agency and resistance theory to understand these men???s ability to live in an unwelcoming place. Resilience allowed these men to cope and deal with the difficulties they faced. Human agency, the individual's capacity to exert autonomy over his life, is used to restore prominence to resistance theory. Agency is the catalyst to resistance and resistance fuels an individual???s, and sometimes a collective, opposition to the dominant social forces that inhibits one???s agency. These men???s desire to live in a rural place can be understood through theoretical considerations of place, the freedom of place and queer theory. Their satisfaction with life can be theorised through the application of a concept new to theory in gay literature - thriving. This thesis documents a largely unreported aptitude and proficiency by rural gay men to live in the bush. It suggests that their close affinity with place gives them a sense of belonging that, when combined with their concept of a gay lifestyle, effectively queers the places in which they live. That gay men can live fulfilled lives in the very places they are said to have fled evokes an innovative perspective together with an appreciation of what it is to be gay in the bush.

Curry, Kristina E. "Civil Religion and Pastoral Power in the George W. Bush Presidency." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/communication_theses/23.

Abstract:
American presidents have maintained an equilibrium between the role of church and state in government affairs via the nation’s civil religion and a “rhetorical contract” between those secular and sacred interests. While other presidents have incorporated religion in their rhetorical execution of office, George W. Bush has done so in a manner different from his predecessors, emphasizing the role of faith in his administration’s beliefs, actions, and policies. Such rhetoric upsets the tenuous relationship between sectarian and secular affairs. Bush’s breach of the rhetorical contract can be explained by Foucault’s notion of pastoral power. Using practices once associated with the church, the savvy government leader may better control his public. I argue that President Bush has shifted the balance of power between organized religion and government, specifically by means of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, thereby corrupting traditional notions of civil religion in the process of implementing his unique form of new pastoral power.

Vroomen, Laura. "This woman's work : Kate Bush, female fans and practices of distinction." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2002. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3033/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a broader understanding of the nature of women’s investments in popular music. Through a case-study of a group of mostly mature, middle class, white and heterosexual female fans for the British performer Kate Bush (1958- ) this thesis asks questions about the way in which gender, age, class, race/ethnicity and sexuality circulate within the field of popular music fandom, a field which has traditionally privileged masculinity and youth. Studies of popular music consumption have tended to emphasise the notion of resistance to dominant culture, often by young, working class men. This has obscured the investments more mature and middle class women might have in popular music. This thesis shows that these investments are, instead of wholly conservative as is usually implied, both resistant and reactionary. In a similar way, these investments do not necessarily lead to powerful positions for the women (for instance, in a domestic context), but they do empower them to deal with the demands of work and relationships. The women’s claims to distinction as serious music lovers are often made at the expense of other fans, especially young girls, and as such reinforce existing notions of the undiscriminating and ‘eroticised’ female fan. At the same time, however, their claims to distinction on account of their ‘feminine cultural capital’, enabled by Kate Bush’s blend of a ‘masculine’ musical virtuosity and a ‘feminine’ address, partly challenges the male domination of the popular music field. Furthermore, the women’s articulation of popular music and a mature sensibility challenges the medium’s youth ethos and offers an understanding of the way in which popular music returns its value for listeners through the long term.

Abstract:
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 transformed the way in which Americans and their leaders viewed the world. The tragic events of that day helped give rise to a foreign policy strategy commonly referred to as the “Bush Doctrine.” At the heart of this doctrine lay a series of propositions about the need to foster liberal democracy as the antidote to terrorism. President George W. Bush proclaimed in a variety of addresses that democracy now represented the “single surviving model” of political life to which all people aspired. In the course of making this argument, President Bush seemed to relate his policies to an overarching “teleology” of progress. This discourse implied that the United States might use force to hasten the emergence of liberal norms and institutions in selected states. With a sense of irony, some commentators soon referred to the Bush administration’s position as “Leninist” because of its determination to bring about the so-called “end of history” today. Yet, surprisingly, these critics had little more to add. This thesis is an attempt to assess in greater depth the Bush administration’s claim to comprehend historical eschatology. Developing a concept termed “democratic vanguardism,” this study investigates the idea of liberal modernity, the role of the United States as a force for democracy, and the implications of using military intervention in the service of idealistic ends. It examines disputes among political theorists, public intellectuals and elected statesmen which help to enrich our understanding of the United States’ efforts under President Bush at bending history to its will.

This thesis serves to clarify and concretize the controversy surrounding the debate on torture as it pertains to the War on Terror during the Bush Administration years. It argues that policy and rhetoric decisions made at the top of the political food chain contributed to the instances of abuse and torture that occurred in the various arenas of the war (i.e. Afghanistan, Iraq, Guantanamo, and CIA “black sites”). Such an argument is made through an analysis of what defines interrogation and torture, what techniques were in fact authorized, what factors went into determining which techniques to use, and what influence these techniques had on abuses that occurred. This thesis concludes with policy updates based on lessons learned and briefly addresses the efforts made by the Obama Administration in regards to torture, interrogation, and terrorism

Abstract:
This thesis responds to the longstanding call from constructivist and poststructuralist scholars for a turn to discourse. It focuses on the paradox of the ability of language to act as a constituting and constraining device within an agent-structure discussion. The Copenhagen School (CS), its attention to language and its concept of securitization is examined in terms of its strengths and weaknesses, including bringing discourse onto the security agenda to an unprecedented extent. This thesis seeks to speak security at a deeper level and move securitization beyond the moment of utterance and the notion of agents breaking free of rules that would otherwise bind, as well as beyond a singular definition of security. It is proposed that the CS framework can be theoretically complemented by Wittgenstein’s notion of language games on board. The analytical shift made by juxtaposing a speech act and a language game also foregrounds the link between language and rules. Wittgenstein’s idea of ‘acts of interpretation’ is also considered, and substantive questions are raised about what the language of security legitimates in principle and in practice. The Bush administration’s justifications for the 2003 Iraq war are taken as a point of departure, and covers how the Bush administration deployed the language of security to justify highly controversial moves. Their narrative about the use of the pre-emptive use of force without an imminent threat existing and ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ such as those seen in the Abu Ghraib photographs in the name of security exemplify that words matter. The arguments conclude that adjustments are needed in the way security is currently spoken in IR theory.

Fifty years after declaration of the People's Republic of China in October 1949 and thirty years after U.S. establishment of full diplomatic relations with PRC in January 1979 the question of Taiwan still remains one of the main and sometimes even very explosive topics in Sino-American relations. This fact proves how important the fate of Taiwan is for the USA as well as for the PRC. This paper compares American foreign policy toward China over Taiwan during Clinton administration (1993-2001) and Bush administration (2001-2009). Based upon analysis of historical development of American relations to China the cornerstone for the policy toward the PRC and Taiwan is presented. This cornerstone characterised by strategic ambiguity represents ground for the comparison of both presidents.

Abstract:
Previously threats were conceived as being connected to wars and armed attacks on other countries. But if we observe the world today there are financial situations that, if they got out of hand, could cause severe problems for large parts of a countries population. The environment is another area where severe consequences can be expected. Buzan, Waever and de Wilde (1998:2) work from the premises that security can, and should, be applied to a wider selection of areas in society. From this stand point this Bachelor thesis will cover the discourse of threats in the inaugural addresses of USAs five most recent presidents: Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama and Trump. The inaugural address` were chosen because it is the presidents opportunity to outline their strategy and ‘set the tone’ for their term in office (Brownell 2016).Throughout the analysis there is a focus on the five sections outlined in Buzans (1991:116) analysis model: military, politics, economy, ecology and societal. The analysis frame is based on both traditional realism and more alternative security theory. There is also a comparing element to examine whether there have been any changes in the discourse, connected to threats, since the 9/11 attacks. Furthermore, the study sets out to see if any of the subjects have shown signs of becoming securitized. The result of this study shows that the discourse of threat is mainly focused around the military section. There has been a general increase in the number of threats mentioned since 9/11, although some sections have decreased. Terrorism and immigration are the two questions that meets the criteria to have undergone securitization.

This project attempts to bridge the gap between organizational theory and political rhetoric by approaching the study of the George W. Bush administration through the lens of Weick's theory of organizing. I specifically argue for the Bush administration as a tightly coupled system, as demonstrated by the media and the members of the administration themselves. Second, I argue for the constraining nature of the enacted environment through an analysis of the administration's position on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. I find that Bush's decision to veto stem cell legislation in 2006 was a consequence of his identity as an Evangelical Christian and of his definition of what it means to be a leader. Finally, I argue for the importance of requisite variety in the administration's rhetorical constructions of the problems facing Social Security and the proposed methods of program reform. The administration's proposal demonstrates the necessity for a rhetorical "matching" between the construction of the problem and the construction of the solution. Finally, I turn to Crable and situate the findings within Crable's model of organizational rhetoric.
