Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses the role of design in collaborative scientific research, through an analysis of the human-scaled models produced by designer Will Burtin for the pharmaceutical conglomerate Upjohn. It argues that such models triggered an intimate co-dependence between architectural techniques and biological theories, consolidating biology into a form of construction—a form of building. Within the context of corporate-sponsored scientific research of American postwar, Upjohn embraced unorthodox methods of mass media communication to engage the public with scientific narratives. It was through such unconventional techniques that design concerns—form, scale, construction, aesthetics—were placed at the forefront of scientific debates.

Abstract:
The publication used previously unknown archival documents from the collections of the State Archive of the Latest History of Kostroma Region related to the history of the exclusion of Yuri Burtin from candidates for membership of the CPSU for an unauthorized government attempt to nominate A.T. Tvardovsky as a candidate for deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in the March 16, 1958 elections. After graduating from Leningrad State University, within the state program of job distribution in August 1954 Burtin was sent in the town of Bui, Kostroma Region, where he taught the Russian language and literature at the Working Youth School for eight years. And in 1958 he made a selfless attempt to nominate A.T. Tvardovsky to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. The purpose of this article is to verify existing information and introduce into the scientific circulation new archival materials that complement and expand our understanding of the place and role of the “sixties” (on the example of Burtin) in the context of political history of Soviet society. The main research methods are the systemic method, the historical approach, elements of the comparative analysis methodology and sociocultural approach to the study of the life and work of one of the prominent representatives of the Russian intelligentsia of the second half of the 20th century. The materials of the article confirm the presence in Soviet society among the intelligentsia of indirect (latent) resistance to the system of power, the methodology of nominating candidates and holding elections to the highest echelons of power. This confirms the need for deep reform of the electoral system, as well as the entire political structure of the country, which has already objectively matured in post-Stalin society.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic compounds stressors of daily life among American Indian/Alaska Natives. This study investigated the impact of COVID-19 among American Indian/Alaska Natives and non-Hispanic whites by examining depressive symptoms, overall stress, resilience, and coping, utilizing the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. Of the 207 individuals participating in this study, 109 identified as American Indian/Alaska Native and 98 as non-Hispanic white. Despite demographic similarities, American Indian/Alaska Natives exhibited more stressors related to COVID-19 as well as higher depressive symptom scores compared to non-Hispanic whites. Furthermore, COVID-19 stressors were more positively correlated with depressive symptoms for American Indian/Alaska Natives than non-Hispanic whites. For American Indian/Alaska Natives, the predominant coping processes identified were planful problem solving, escape-avoidance, and self-controlling. This study provides data to support programs and policies centered on improving the psychosocial health for American Indians/Alaska Natives and decreasing COVID-19-related health disparities.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Head and Neck (HNSCC) and Ovarian cancer (OC) are two indications for which immunotherapy had limited impact so far. Current treatments achieve high rates of initial success through surgery and adjuvant chemo/radiotherapy, but patients (pts) remain at high risk of relapse in both indications. Immune stimulation using a vaccine is a promising strategy to a clinically meaningful improvement. Herein we report phase I data of TG4050, a vaccine engineered to carry a pt tailored antigen payload, in pts with HNSCC (NCT04183166) or OC (NCT03839524). Methods: Tumor specific variants are identified using next generation sequencing of tumor and normal samples whereby immune relevant mutations are predicted using a machine learning algorithm factoring in parameters known to affect immunogenicity including MHC binding, level of expression, prevalence across clones, and antigen processing. DNA sequences of the mutations of interest, typically 30 per pt, are cloned in a viral vector (Modified Vaccinia Virus Ankara). Following curative intent treatment, HNSCC pts in complete remission were randomized to an immediate vaccination arm to receive weekly doses of TG4050 for 6 weeks followed by a maintenance period of one dose every 3 weeks for up to 20 doses or to a delayed vaccination arm where the same vaccination regimen is initiated at relapse. OC pts received the vaccine upon onset of signs of relapse. PBMC were collected at Baseline and after 6 doses of vaccine. Primary endpoint was vaccine safety and secondary endpoints included feasibility, immunogenicity. Results: 18 pts received TG4050 (5 OC and 13 HNSCC) treatment with no related grade ≥ 3 adverse events. Tumor mutational burden (TMB) was on average 3.00±0.98 and 2.43±0.69 mutations per megabase for HNSCC and OC respectively. Despite this low TMB, all pts had sufficient cancer specific neoantigens to design a vaccine. Ex-vivo ELISPOT was completed for 7 pts at the time of submission. A mean of 44% of selected mutations were associated with a reactive T cell responses either spontaneously or after TG4050 stimulation ranging from 6 to 22 mutations per pt. Vaccination induced a stimulation of T cell response in all tested pts on an average of 10 targeted mutations, induction of de novo responses was seen in all 7 tested pts and amplification of pre-existing response in 6/7 pts. None of the evaluable HNSCC pts receiving TG4050 immediately after first line treatment had relapse after a median follow-up of 7 months while 2 pts had relapse in the delayed vaccination arm. Furthermore, in OC pts treated at early relapse, TG4050 has normalized disease markers (ctDNA and/or CA-125) for 2/4 pts with stable disease for 9 and 11 months. Conclusion: TG4050 treatment is feasible and immunogenic in pts with low to moderate TMB. It is effective in inducing T cell responses and first signs of antitumor activity are encouraging for the continuation of development.

Abstract:
SummaryJoshua Searle’s latest book seeks to open our eyes to the signs of the times. He describes how a series of global crises have had a dehumanising effect; fragmenting communities and creating many victims. Searle believes that a transformative theology marked by compassion, creativity and freedom is required to equip the Church to respond. The emergence of Post-Christendom is seen as the opportunity for this radical enterprise to begin.

Abstract:
Thalassemia is a common hereditary hemoglobinopathy that occurs all over the world, mostly in the middle and low-income countries. We set this study to study the demographic and clinical profile of thalassemia patients, and to highlight the burden of this disorder on the health system, in Iraq. This cross sectional survey was carried out during the period from January through June 2022 in the two major centers of thalassemia in Baghdad. All thalassemia patients that were attending those centers during a six-month period, were included. The direct and indirect annual cost of medicines and health services were computed. The prevalence of thalassemia is slopping up, with the estimated annual cost of health care regarding diagnosis, treatment, blood transfusions and other services for each thalassemia patients is $6815. The indirect health care services were $3995, making the total annual cost for each thalassemia patient $10810. It is proven that consanguineous marriages increase the prevalence of Thalassemia. Public policies aimed at clarifying this for the population would be relevant. The annual cost for thalassemia patients in Iraq is relatively high, most of which is covered by the Ministry of Health and its institutions. This causes a burden on the health system. Also, adopting new policies to reduce the costs especially through finding substitutes (or less costly therapy) for blood chelating agents, is crucial on the long term strategy

Abstract:
In the summer of 2001 a major controversy erupted following a Jewish Chronicle report (18 May 2001) that the Honorary Officers and Executive Committee of the Board of Deputies of British Jews had decided to offer for sale, at Messrs Christie's auction rooms in London, a hitherto unpublished work by the nineteenth-century explorer, writer and diplomat Sir Richard Francis Burton. In the event, and in the glare of worldwide media attention, the reserve price of £150,000 was not reached (6 June 2001). The lot – one of the very few Burton manuscripts still in private hands – was therefore withdrawn and returned, amidst yet further controversy, to the safe-keeping of the Board. In this article we trace the history of this work from its creation in the early 1870s, and offer some thoughts on its contemporary significance.
