Abstract:

A non-dimensional quantity that is used to describe fluid flows is the Knudsen numbers Kn. Kn = l/L where l is the mean free path of the particles and L a typical length scale. For Knudsen number much smaller than 1 the particles can be described as a continuum. For these applications, Navier-Stokes equations are sufficient to describe the flow. For larger Knudsen values the second order Burnett equations can be used. Doing a linear stability analysis on the Burnett equations it can be shown that the equations are not stable for all wave numbers. A method of stabilizing the equations has been suggested by Lars Söderholm, see (Söderholm, 2006). This results in the Hybrid Burnett equations. For the purpose of investigating the ability for the Hybrid Burnett equations to describe physical flows, the phenomenon of shock waves will be numerically treated for different cases.

A high amplitude sinusoidal wave will be integrated forward in time using Runge-Kutta fourth order scheme as it travels along the x-axis. Fourier’s method will be used for spatial discretization. This wave will with time form a shock wave. The high gradient in the wave profile will result in a reflected wave that is traveling in the opposite direction of the original wave. As the amplitude of the original wave and the self reflected wave decay we will have two small amplitude waves where non-linear effects can be neglected. From this old age wave the amplitude will be compared with the analytical solutions of the Burgers’ equation. The dependence of the amplitude of the self reflected wave of parameters such as the Reynolds number and Knudsen numberwill be investigated.

van, Lopik A. R. "Ivy Compton-Burnett and the inter-war novel." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1331995/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ivy Compton-Burnett's inter-war novels have rarely been closely considered in relation to that period's dominant sociocultural paradigms. Counteracting the existing critical tendency to consider her work as eccentric and a-historical, this thesis situates the novels within a succession of aesthetic, political, and social discourses in order to foreground their radical reshaping of prevailing modes of thought and expression. Compton-Burnett's mordant chronicles of family life typify inter-war literary culture's rejection of its Victorian and Edwardian heritage and its critique of their lingering post-war presence through an examination of apparently defunct conservative and increasingly nostalgic constructions of individual and national identity. The thesis is constructed in two parts; the first considering the broad cultural positioning of her work, the second focussing more closely upon its interaction with specific literary, commercial, and sociological models. Beginning with Compton-Burnett's juvenile novel Dolores, I will consider the relation between her early education and reading and the evolution of her mature literary style by tracing an emergent comic subversion of the melodramatic plots of nineteenth-century fiction which culminated in an idiosyncratic form of neo-Victorianism. The following chapter examines her work's early critical reception, its alignment with certain precepts of modernist form associated with a Post-Impressionist Bloomsbury aesthetic, and the adumbration of a specifically 'high-brow' identity. Building upon this foundation, the subsequent chapters consider Compton-Burnett's work thematically in terms of: late twenties and early thirties constructions of gender and sexuality in a climate of censorship and coincident taste for literary deviance; the Golden Age detective novel and psychological investigations of violence and criminality; and the English country house as a site of cultural and historical fragmentation. Together, these chapters reconstruct an essentially avant-garde identity which the author's perceived focus upon middle-class domesticity, her longevity and incremental inscription as a minor British institution have in recent decades eroded.

Abstract: Based on Enskog dense gas theory, Grad method of moments and on Chapman-Enskog method, we obtain linear expressions for the pressure tensor and for the heat flux corresponding to the third aproximation of the distribution function. These expressions are known as Burnett equations. This aproximation yields effects known as: iD thermal stress, which indicates the appearance of a stress due to a second gradient of temperature. iiD viscous heat flux, which indicates the appearance of a heat flux due to a second gradient of velocity. The problem concerning the propagation of plane harmonic waves of small amplitude is analyzed for the theories of Burnett, 13-field and Navier-Stokes-Fourier. The phase speed and the attenuation coefficient are obtained for each theory and the results are compared.

Full text
Abstract:
Artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations near the Willamette River in Lake Oswego, Oregon indicate the presence there of a Late Windust-Early Cascade Phase site possibly dating to 9,000 B.P. The assemblage includes 137 projectile points, bifaces or point fragments, nearly all of the Cascade-type. Two stem fragments and one complete point which are similar to those of the Windust Phase which dates 10,000-8,000 B.P. in the southern Columbia Plateau also were found. Stone knives, choppers, scrapers, hammerstones, cores and microblades also are included in the assemblage. No later type notched or stemmed points have been recovered from the site. If the hypothesized dates are valid, the site will be the oldest discovered to date in the Lower Willamette River-Portland Basin area. This thesis reports on the site, its excavation and its artifacts.

We develop methods of solution for classical rarefied polyatomic gases with spherical molecules having rotational energy through a kinetic theory based on the Boltzmann equation. Two subjects are considered: (i) by the use of the combined method of Chapman-Enskog and Grad and representation theorems we show a systematical way to get the transport coefficients for polyatomic gases subjected to external constant magnetic fields (Senftleben-Beenakker effect). (ii) we obtain linearized Burnett equations that correspond to gradients of second order of the basic fields of density, velocity and temperature through: (a) a kinetic theory by using the Chapman-Enskog method and (b) a phenomenological theory based on extended thermodynamics.

Abstract:

With the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, T Bone Burnett spent his cultural capital on repurposing traditional American music in subsequently successful soundtracks and artistic productions, providing a spark for a 21st century cultural movement that moves beyond music. This study aims to position Burnett has a cultural catalyst by grounding his work, and those abiding by a similar ethic, in the American South. In the process, I examine what Burnett’s soundtracks and select artistic productions communicate about contemporary Southern cultures and identities, while negotiating the ever-enigmatic generational issues of identity and authenticity. By extending the analysis to artists, producers, and cultural tastemakers who operate by a similar ethic as Burnett as well, I also address the characteristics of and spark igniting the preservationist, heritage movement in contemporary roots music, and how this music community contributes to ongoing conversations regarding contemporary Southern identity? The purpose of my study is to explore these connections, the culture in which they reside, and most specifically the role T Bone Burnett plays in a contemporary cultural movement which seeks to (re)present a traditional American music ethos in distinctly Southern terms. Furthermore, I will set the movement within the contemporary context in which such sounds, symbols, and narratives reside. Within this study, I read films, songs, soundtracks, albums, fashion, and performances, each loaded with symbols, archetypes, and themes that illuminate intersection past and present issues of identity. By weaving ethnographic interviews (with musicians, producers, and other cultural tastemakers) with cultural analysis, I investigate how relevant cultural issues are being negotiated, how complicated discussions of history, tradition, and heritage feed the ethic, and how the American South as a perceived distinct region factors in to the equation.

Abstract:
Burnett element [1] has been regarded as the most important contribution to infinite element method. It comprises two principal features: one is the use of confocal ellipsoidal coordinate system; another is the exact multi-pole expansion in the newly defined “radial” direction. The former leads in effect to a quasi one-dimensional problem from the infinite point of view, and thereby makes the latter be possibly carried out. However, in evaluating the system matrices, undefined integrals are involved. Hence, the resulting “stiffness”, “damping” and “mass” matrices don’t have definite physical significance. The potential disadvantage is that this efficient element cannot be directly used to solve transient problems. In this paper, presentation of the theory of multi-pole expansion used in Burnett element is changed in form and the shape functions are subsequently expressed in terms of local coordinates by using the infinite-to-finite geometry mapping. In addition to the use of Astley type weighting functions [2] and to the modification of the weighting factor, the system matrices of Burnett infinite element are eventually bounded and integrated term by term using Gauss rules.

"This study explored whether leaders’ thought patterns (specifically cognitive distortions) and emotion regulation strategies (specifically cognitive reappraisal, cognitive defusion, and expressive suppression) relate to their work experiences. Findings suggest that leaders’ cognitive distortions are related to their work experiences and that emotion regulation strategies can help leaders mitigate the effects of cognitive distortions. More specifically, the results of this study offer the following insights: • Leaders’ cognitive distortions related to all examined workplace topics (role ambiguity, role conflict, social support, perceived organizational support, job satisfaction, and burnout). • Leaders’ use of emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and cognitive defusion) mitigated the impact their cognitive distortions had on burnout, specifically. • Attempting to suppress emotional responses was relatively ineffective compared to the other two emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and cognitive defusion). These insights suggest that certain emotion regulation strategies may be helpful in ameliorating the deleterious effects of cognitive distortions on leaders’ burnout. The current paper provides an overview of the different cognitive distortions and emotion regulation strategies explored and includes advice on what leaders can do to more effectively notice and manage cognitive distortions that emerge during distressing situations.
