Abstract:
Burnout has garnered significant attention across multiple scientific disciplines, particularly in health, management, and psychology. This bibliometric review aims to delve into the factors influencing burnout, while also highlighting emerging trends, influential authors, and potential avenues for future research. Utilizing systematic data collection and analysis through VOS Viewer software, this study uncovers key themes, research contributors, and interdisciplinary connections within the realm of burnout literature. The findings reveal a substantial body of research dedicated to burnout, with academia notably engaged in its exploration. However, a notable gap exists in the emphasis on causal factors. Predominant contributors to burnout identified include excessive workload, work-life imbalance, and inadequate social support systems. This underscores the pressing need for comprehensive interdisciplinary collaboration to formulate effective prevention and intervention strategies. The study advocates for the integration of disciplines such as psychology, human resource management, and health to address burnout holistically. By bridging these diverse fields, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners can develop more nuanced and effective approaches to tackle burnout's adverse effects in both workplace settings and broader contexts. In conclusion, this review offers valuable insights for stakeholders invested in mitigating burnout's detrimental impacts. By recognizing the multifaceted nature of burnout and fostering collaboration across disciplines, the groundwork is laid for more robust and sustainable solutions to combat this pervasive phenomenon.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: Burn-out is defined as a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished self-achievement that affects individuals exposed to chronic occupational stress. Physicians and caregivers faced with the death of their patients, such as oncology, are particularly vulnerable to this syndrome. Objectives: To evaluate the burn-out of medical professionals in medical oncology, to research the predisposing factors and to analyze the functional complaints and the behavior of the staff associated with this syndrome. Methods: A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study among medical oncology professionals practicing in public hospitals in the Tunisian territory who exercise more than two years in oncology; with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results: Our study population was predominantly female (81%). 53% are doctors and 47% are paramedical health care professionals. A high degree of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement were found in 63%, 53% and 59% in our population, respectively. With 21% global high burn-out. The female sex was associated with high emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment as well as global burn-out. This burn-out was attributed to factors associated with working conditions and professional climate, mainly: overwork, poor organization of service, lack of resources and time, lack of recognition, lack of communication, lack of respect, conflicts with colleagues, report unsatisfactory salary effort and aggressions by patients and their families. Functional complaints and health care professional’s behavior associated with burn-out were: feelings of sadness, blockage, and irritability, sleep disorders, unexplained pain, epigastralgia, addictive behaviors, psychotropic consumption, suicidal thoughts, decreased performance and desire for a job transfer. Conclusions: By its impact on professionals, burn-out in medical oncology represents a major threat to the quality of health care. Its etiologies, although complex and intricate, are well known. Its prevention and its support are possible, but involve mobilization at all levels.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Burn-out or exhaustion syndrome is caused by a prolonged exposure to a chronic professional stress. Public Health Professionals are the most exposed to this kind of risk. The ulti- mate goal here is to determine the prevalence of the burn-out and search for factors associated with this pathology among those who work in the field of health. Our sample, which is from the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, consists of 150 nurses, 80 doctors, and 40 administrators. A self-questionnaire was employed, the Maslach Burnout In- ventory (MBI) as well as a clinical interview. The results of this study show a high degree of burnout. Moreover, 56.66% of participants show a high level of emotio - nal exhaustion, 45.18% suffer from a high level of depression. Meanwhile, the loss of a sense of personal accom plish ment is high among 48.51% of those surveyed. The emotional exhaustion observed among people who have worked for a long time ago is associated with the means of transportation used and to the unsuitable hours of work. Depersonalization exists among elderly people and the oldest at work. This study confirms the existence of a high level of burnout among health professionals. Many socio-demographic and socio-professional factors contribute to the increase in the level that people are affected. These factors encourage the promotion of better working life conditions.

Abstract Aim: Men’s care for women after burns causes suffering for them. How they endure these sufferings is not obvious. The aim of this study was to discover the facilitators of these sufferings from the perspective of men. Methods: This was a qualitative study with a conventional content analysis. The qualitative study was conducted with face-to-face, semi-structured interviews and open-ended questions. Participants were 16 men with burnt wives. Data collection continued until saturation and Data analysis was conducted using content analysis. Results: four themes and nine sub-themes were emerged: Comprehensive support of relatives (Financial support, assistance in house affairs, Mental relaxation) Personal transformation (hardiness due to the past experiences, Growth), self-sacrifice of burn victim (Emotional support for the family, despite oneself suffering, trying to maintain oneself past position), and commitment to care (Religious beliefs, care out of responsibility). Conclusion: Men used some facilitators to endure the suffering of caring for their wives, which can depend in part on their social, cultural, and religious characteristics.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Depression, Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in burn patients are common during the first year of recovery and beyond. Mental health screening of patients at all burn centers is recommended. The purpose of this study was to determine how depression or PTSD symptoms may evolve from inpatient to outpatient care in burn patients. Methods From March of 2022 through September of 2023, the PHQ-2 and PC-PTSD were administered to 280 outpatients via a self-report screening questionnaire. For pediatric patients < 12 years old, the primary caregiver filled out the questionnaire. A score of 2 or more on either of the screening tools resulted in further assessment by the social worker to determine appropriate next steps and provide community referrals. A subset of these patients were also screened in the inpatient setting via interview by the psychology team using the PHQ-2 and a modified PC-PTSD. The chi-square test was used to analyze the data collected. Results A total of 106/280 (38%) outpatients screened positive for depressive symptoms, 110/280 (39%) screened positive for ASD/PTSD symptoms, and 77/280 (27.5%) screened positive for both depressive and ASD/PTSD symptoms. Patients with facial burns were significantly more likely to have ASD/PTSD in both inpatient (14/29, p< 0.001) and outpatient (29/53, p=0.011) settings. Lower extremity burns were associated with depression as outpatients (64/148, p=0.049). Female outpatients were more likely to report depression (52/103 p=0.001) & ASD/PTSD (44/103, p=0.339) though ASD/PTSD was not statistically significant. For a number of patients, results varied between inpatient & outpatient screenings. About 35% of patients who screened negative for depression or ASD/PTSD as an inpatient then screened positive as an outpatient. Similarly, some patients screened positive for depression (23%) or ASD/PTSD (34%) as an inpatient and then screened negative as an outpatient. Conclusions Mental health screening of individuals in our burn center yielded a significant number of positive screens for depression and ASD/PTSD symptoms, validating the need for screening of all burn patients. Comparisons of inpatient and outpatient screens for previously hospitalized patients showed changes in depression and PTSD symptoms over time. Positive screens resulted in referrals to community and mental health resources. Applicability of Research to Practice Mental health screenings should be performed at multiple stages of recovery from burn injuries as manifestations of depression and ASD/PTSD may change over time.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective The COVID-19 pandemic and associated quarantine measures highly impacted parental psychological well-being. Parents of children with chronic diseases might be specifically vulnerable as they already face multiple challenges to provide adequate care for their child. The research questions of the current study were twofold: (a) to examine whether parents of children with a chronic disease experienced more anxiety and depression compared to parents of healthy children and (b) to examine a series of risk factors for worsened well-being (i.e., depression, anxiety, and sleep problems), such as sociodemographic variables, COVID-19-specific variables (i.e., financial worries, living space, and perceived quality of health care), and parental psychological experiences (i.e., parental burn-out and less positive parenting experiences). Methods Parents of children with a chronic disease (i.e., the clinical sample; N = 599 and 507 for Research Questions 1 and 2, respectively) and parents of healthy children (i.e., the reference sample: N = 417) filled out an online survey. Results Findings demonstrated that the parents in the clinical sample reported higher levels of anxiety than parents in the reference sample. Analyses within the clinical sample indicated that COVID-19-specific stressors and parental psychological experiences were associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. Mediation analyses furthermore indicated that the association of COVID-19-specific stressors with all outcome measures was mediated by parental burn-out. Conclusions Parents of children with a chronic disease constitute a vulnerable group for worse well-being during the current pandemic. Findings suggest interventions directly targeting parental burn-out are warranted.

Abstract:
The origin and type of stress among seamen were investigated by means of interviews with three harbor physicians in Rotterdam. The main psychological problems encountered were loneliness, homesickness, and “burn-out” syndrome. The problems were primarily caused by long periods away from home, the decreased number of seamen per ship, and by increased automatization. Quantification of the prevalence and severity of these problems is necessary to elucidate preventive and therapeutic measures.

Abstract:
This study assessed posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), burn-out (BO), and compassion satisfaction (CS) among Israeli body handlers. We aimed to explore differences between two groups of Orthodox Jewish male volunteers: the “ZAKA” body handlers (ZAs: n = 102), and a comparison group of charity workers (CWs: n = 101). Furthermore, we assessed the contribution of two potential resilience buffers—sense of coherence (SOC) and spirituality at the workplace (SAW)—to PTSS, BO, and CS among these volunteers via self-report measures. Surprisingly, results show that ZAs reported significantly lower levels of PTSS and BO as compared with CWs. ZAs also reported significantly higher levels of CS as compared with CWs. Importantly, SOC mediated the link between groups and PTSS and BO. Both SOC and SAW mediated the link between groups and CS. These findings suggest that “ZAKA” body handlers demonstrate substantial resilience following repeated exposure to death and atrocities. To reduce work-related psychological distress and improve CS, SOC and SAW should be taken into account in the process of recruitment and training of body handlers.
