Abstract:
Violent extremism is one of the major challenges of our time. A cluster-randomized controlled trial with two arms (treatment vs. control) conducted in 132 villages in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso ( N = 2,904 participants) examined whether a narrative intervention in the format of a radio drama can shift behavioral intentions, beliefs, and attitudes in contexts of violent extremism. Individuals in intervention villages participated in weekly listening sessions to the radio drama (6 months’ content) over 12 weeks. Compared with the control condition, the narrative intervention reduced justification of violence, increased behavioral intentions to collaborate with the police, and increased prioritization of addressing violent extremism. The intervention did not influence beliefs about or attitudes toward the police (e.g., trust, fairness) or beliefs about police–community collaboration. Content analysis of the narrative intervention and participants’ reception and discussion of the intervention provide insights on the processes driving the intervention’s influence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article aims to build a bridge between storytelling and drama. More specifically, it analyzes the way in which the creators of awareness-raising theatres go about scripting certain contents of the oral tradition, in this case storytelling. Through this study, the aim is to explain how traditional storytelling is used as an inspiring material in theatrical creation. From the analysis of specific cases of shows entitled "Oyo: Force and Resistance" and "The King's Elephant", subjected to an intertextual analysis, we arrive at the conclusion that storytelling and awareness-raising theatre are two arts that have in common their intention to change society, on the one hand, and that the transition from traditional to scripted performance is the result of a process of creative transformation and artistic innovation, moreover.

Bilali, Rezarta. "Narrative media interventions influence efficacy beliefs, social norms, and choice of behavioral options: A field experiment in Burkina Faso." Group Processes & Intergroup Relations, August 10, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/13684302231186243.

Abstract:
Narrative media interventions in the form of edutainment are increasingly used to change behaviors, social norms, and attitudes. The present study examines the effects of a narrative intervention using role models on efficacy beliefs, behavioral options, social norms, and attitudes. I utilize data from a cluster randomized controlled trial with two arms (treatment vs. control) conducted in 132 villages in Burkina Faso ( N = 2,904 participants). Randomly selected participants in intervention villages participated in group listening sessions of a radio drama over 3 months. Compared to a business-as-usual control, the narrative intervention increased self- and collective efficacy beliefs to bring about social change, and influenced endorsement of behavioral options to fight corruption. The intervention also reduced the perception that reporting corruption is viewed as dangerous by the community. The findings contribute to the literature on narrative media interventions and social modeling of action.
