Abstract:
In his recent foreword to the second edition of Paul Burkett's Marx and Nature, John Bellamy Foster reflected on a significant change in left attitudes toward Marx's ecology: "Today Marx's understanding of the ecological problem is being studied in universities worldwide and is inspiring ecological actions around the globe." This worldwide recognition of Marx's ecological critique of capitalism without doubt owes much to Burkett's Marx and Nature (1999) and Foster's Marx's Ecology (2000). Yet the new interest in ecological Marxism did not originate solely with these books. Rather, as their new co-authored book Marx and the Earth documents, over the last fifteen years Burkett and Foster have meticulously refuted the many criticisms of Marx from so-called "first-stage ecosocialists"…. It should be noted that, whatever their disagreements with Marx, the first-stage ecosocialists were also deeply critical of capitalism. So why are Foster and Burkett arguing with their potential comrades? Furthermore, some of the issues taken up in Marx and the Earth might appear abstruse at first glance—why bother debating them at such length?… [A] patient reader will soon recognize the book's importance and the significance of the issues at stake.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

Abstract:
Seven open-pollinated pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] stocks were grown in a nursery in blocks. Bud growth of ungrafted seedlings was influenced by rootstock, with growth being more advanced on `Curtis', `Elliott', `Apache', and `Sioux' seedlings than on `Moore', `Riverside', and `Burkett'. Bud growth of grafted trees was influenced by scion, with growth of `Candy' being most advanced, while `Cape Fear' trees were more advanced than `Stuart'. Growth of `Candy' grafted trees was affected by rootstock, with growth being more advanced on `Elliott' and `Curtis' seedling rootstock as compared to `Apache', Sioux', `Riverside', and `Burkett' seedling rootstock. Tree damage caused by a May freeze was directly related to bud growth and was influenced by scion and rootstock.

Sha, Chulin. "Burkitt lymphoma classification and MYC-associated non-Burkitt lymphoma investigation based on gene expression." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9250/.

Abstract:
Burkitt lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma are two closely related types of lymphoma that are managed differently in clinical practice and the accurate diagnosis is a key point in treatment decisions. However based on current criteria combined with morphological, immunophenotypic and genetic characteristics, a significant number of cases exhibit overlapping features where diagnosis and treatment decisions are difficult to make. Especially, the prognosis have been reported significantly unfavourable in a subset of cases that are initially diagnosed as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma but bear MYC gene translocation, which is a defining feature of Burkitt lymphoma however can also be found in other lymphomas. Despite the adverse effect of MYC in aggressive lymphomas other than Burkitt lymphoma, the underlying mechanism and effective treatment is still unclear. Recent technological advances have made it possible to simultaneously investigate an enormous number of bio-molecules, and the scientific fields associated with measuring molecular data in such a high-throughput way are usually called “omics”. For example, genomics assesses thousands of DNA sequences and transcriptomics assays large numbers of transcripts in a single experiment. These techniques together with the rapidly emerging analytical methods in bioinformatics have introduced cancer research into a new era. The growing amount of omics data have significantly influenced the understanding of lymphomas and hold great promise in classifying subtypes, predicting treatment responses that will eventually lead to personalized therapy. Here in this study, we investigate the discrimination of Burkitt lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma based on DNA microarray gene expression data, which has contributed most in molecular classification of lymphoma subtypes in the last decade. On the basis of two previous research level gene expression profiling classifiers, we developed a robust classifier that works effectively on different platforms and formalin fixed paraffin-embedded samples commonly used in routine clinic. The validation of the classifier on the samples from clinical patients achieves a high agreement with diagnosis made in a central haematopathology laboratory, and leads to a potential outcome indication in the patients presenting intermediate features. In addition, we explore the role of MYC in the above lymphomas. Our investigation emphasizes the inferior impact of high level MYC mRNA expression on patients’ outcome, and the functional analysis of MYC high expression associated genes show significantly enriched molecular mechanisms of proliferation and metabolic process. Moreover, the gene PRMT5 is found to be highly correlated with MYC expression which opens a possible therapeutic target for the treatment.

Abstract:
Apoptosis resistance is the major cause of chemotherapy failure in most kinds of cancers, including Burkitt lymphomas (BL). To elucidate molecular mechanisms regulating the development of apoptosis resistance, a panel of 15 BL cell lines was investigated for apoptosis induction upon treatment with microtubule inhibitors taxol, nocodazole and vincristine. Significant differences were observed in the extent of apoptosis induction among BL cell lines examined. Interestingly, cell lines exhibiting resistance to taxol- or nocodazole-induced apoptosis, showed development of polyploidy (>4N) and vice versa, displaying an inverse relationship between apoptosis and polyploidy induction. Further, in sensitive cell lines taxol-induced apoptosis was accompanied by caspase activation, Bid cleavage and Mcl-1 down-regulation. In contrast, most apoptosis resistant cell lines exhibited a loss of Bax and Bak expression and showed prolonged mitotic arrest with >4N DNA content upon treatment. To gain mechanistic insights into microtubule inhibitor-induced cell death, the role of the mitotic kinase PLK1 was addressed. Dominant negative PLK1 mutant induced apoptosis, however, failed to show synergism in induction of apoptosis in combination with microtubule inhibitors. This indicates that PLK1 inhibition and spindle toxins might trigger a similar mitotic stress pathway. Conversely, overexpression of wildtype PLK1 promoted cell cycle progression in cells treated with taxol. Remarkably, inhibition of apoptosis in sensitive cell lines by caspase inhibition promoted polyploidy confirming the inverse relationship between apoptosis and polyploidization. Considering targets to induce Bax/Bak independent caspase activation would be of great importance to avoid undesirable events leading to chromosomal imbalances in treating resistant cancers.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper reviews the diagnostic data from vertical wells where operators targeted Burkett, Hamilton and Marcellus Shales and other deeper unconventional shale or tight gas reservoirs with vertical wells between the years 2006-2013. The learnings are then translated for their applicability in horizontal development wells. Its purpose is to deliver a better perception of fracture geometry and interactions between payzones that are separated by potential fracture barriers. Multiple vertical wells employed the use of diagnostics in the form of proppant tracer, production logging and post-fracture temperature surveys to provide an improved understanding of hydraulic fracture and propped fracture height and the formations that serve as hydraulic fracture barriers. Completions variables such as treating rates, proppant volumes, perforation designs and frac fluid systems are examined to determine how they relate to propped fracture height growth. In the majority of the logs reviewed, the proppant was contained to the perforated interval or just above and below. Some wells did have extensive proppant height growth. However, in most of those cases, the propped fracture height was the result of poor cement bonding, multiple fractured intervals growing towards one another and frac plug failures. As expected, hydraulic fracture height is typically significantly higher than the proppant height. Few vertical wells showed evidence of proppant connecting the Marcellus and Burkett zones. Formations acting as fracture barriers did not respond to many of the completions variables. Large treatment volumes, up to 500,000 lbs or more of proppant in a single stage, are often contained to propped fracture heights of less than 50 ft. Few vertical unconventional wells are currently drilled now that most economic Marcellus fairways are well into their development phase. Vertical wells and their learnings are often forgotten with the many personnel and role changes, acquisitions, mergers and other fast paced changes in the industry over the last decade. The purpose of this paper is to reintroduce the valuable and still relevant vital information from these forgotten vertical wells.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper delves into the effects of long-term shut-in periods and production cycling on unconventional wet gas wells in the Appalachian Basin, where unique operational circumstances led to a long-term shut-in period. The unconventional Marcellus and Burkett wells were of a variety of production age. Ranging from depleted and operating under artificial lift, while others were recently flowed back and still in wellbore cleanup. A "long-term shut-in" refers to a shut-in period that occurs after a well has been in production for a substantial time period, rather than an intentional delay of production post-stimulation, known as "seasoning." The term "production cycling" refers to turning wells online to production for short periods of time and then shut-in for short periods of time. This was due to pipeline constraints, lease agreements, and/or transient operational conditions. The paper discusses the results of a comprehensive analysis, which included decline curve analysis, statistical analysis, hydraulic fracture modeling, build-up analysis, and rate transient analysis. The study considered many factors, such as inter-well spacing, stimulation, generational effects, wellbore boundaries, and reservoir/geologic characteristics. Overall, the study revealed a wide range of both positive and negative effects from both a reservoir and a production perspective, suggesting that factors such as well age, generation, spacing, and stimulation size were drivers. Near-term improvements were observed in previously damaged parent wells following the shut-in period. Several of the wells experienced a second, higher initial production rate than during flow back due to fluid cleanup effects. However, certain tightly spaced wells experienced negative effects on production in the longer term. In conclusion, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects of long-term shut-in periods and production cycling on unconventional wet gas wells in the Appalachian Basin. In real-time operations, many unique challenges are presented, gaining a deeper understanding of the downhole reservoir and long-term production effects will aid in more informed operational decisions in the future. The research outcomes emphasize the need for a more nuanced approach to unconventional reservoir development, and a careful consideration of the specific circumstances of each well. This study contributes to the ongoing efforts to improve the recovery of unconventional resources as these assets mature.
