Abstract:
The taxonomy of the endemic whitefish of the lakes of the Reuss River system (Lucerne, Sarnen, Zug) and Lake Sempach, Switzerland, is reviewed and revised. Lake Lucerne harbours five species. Coregonus intermundiasp. nov. and C. suspensussp. nov., are described. Coregonus nobilis Haack, 1882, C. suidteri Fatio, 1885, and C. zugensis Nüsslin, 1882, are redescribed. Genetic studies have shown that C. suidteri and C. zugensis are composed of several distinct species endemic to different lakes. The names C. suidteri and C. zugensis are restricted to the species of lakes Sempach and Zug, respectively. The whitefish populations previously referred to as C. suidteri and C. zugensis from Lake Lucerne are described as C. litoralissp. nov. and C. muellerisp. nov., respectively. Furthermore, the whitefish from Lake Zug that were previously referred to as C. suidteri are described as C. supersumsp. nov. A holotype is designated for C. supersum that was previously one of two syntypes of C. zugensis. The other syntype is retained for C. zugensis. Coregonus obliterussp. nov. is described from Lake Zug, and C. obliterus and C. zugensis from Lake Zug are extinct. Finally, we describe C. sarnensissp. nov. from lakes Sarnen and Alpnach. Coregonus suidteri from Lake Sempach shows strong signals of introgression from deliberately translocated non-native whitefish species, which questions if the extant population still carries a genetic legacy from the original species and thus may need to be considered extinct. Coregonus suspensus is genetically partially of allochthonous origin, closely related to the radiation of Lake Constance. It is therefore compared to all known and described species of Lake Constance: C. wartmanni Bloch, 1784, C. macrophthalmus Nüsslin, 1882, C. arenicolus Kottelat,1997, and C. gutturosus Gmelin, 1818.

Abstract:
Data quality is an important issue in cancer registration. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the four main data quality indicators (comparability, validity, timeliness, and completeness) for the Cancer Registry Zurich and Zug (Switzerland). We extracted all malignant cancer cases (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) diagnosed between 1980 and 2014 in the canton of Zurich. Methods included the proportion of morphologically verified cases (MV%), the proportion of DCN and DCO cases (2009–2014), cases with primary site uncertain (PSU%), the stability of incidence rates over time, age-specific incidence rates for childhood cancer, and mortality:incidence (MI) ratios. The DCO rate decreased from 6.4% in 1997 to 0.8% in 2014 and was <5% since 2000. MV% was 95.5% in 2014. PSU% was <3% over the whole period. The incidence rate of all tumours increased over time with site-specific fluctuations. The overall M:I ratio decreased from 0.58 in 1980 to 0.37 in 2014. Overall, data quality of the Cancer Registry Zurich and Zug was acceptable according to the methods presented in this review. Most indicators improved over time with low DCO rates, high MV%, low PSU%, relatively low M:I ratios and age-specific incidence of childhood cancer within reference ranges.

Abstract:
High bat diversity in forest nature reserves in the Canton Zug Switzerland harbours 30 bat species. Of these, more than 80% have at least part of their habitat in forests. All 22 Swiss priority bat species are considered as forest species. These include twelve forest target species, for which a specific management is required. However, because of the secretive life of bats, missing information on the presence of bat species precluded the implementation of targeted conservation measures. In the last years, new broadband ultrasound recorders were developed as a powerful tool to detect and identify bat species in forests. The aim of our study was to use these new methods to record the presence of bat species in five forest nature reserves in the Canton Zug, to analyse their activity and to evaluate the site-specific differences. During 258 nights of data collection, we recorded 30,522 bat passes of at least twelve different bat species. 23.5% of the recorded bat passes were species from the Swiss Red List. At least three national priority forest target species were detected and three species were discovered for the first time in the Canton Zug. The variation of bat activity between the different forest reserves was high. In particular, areas with diverse and light forest communities, which are rich in dead and decayed wood, proved to be attractive habitats to bats. Alluvial forests, open waters and the presence of old oaks enhanced the diversity of species and bat activity in general. These results were used to define one target species for each forest nature reserve in the study sites and to promote species conservation measures.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article focuses on the evolution of the rhetoric and practice of corporate offshoring in Switzerland from the post-war economic boom to the industrial crisis in the mid-seventies. The virtue of a historical perspective on the issue of offshoring is to show how recent controversies have their roots in previous decades, suggesting the need to reassess recent debates about structural change in light of earlier experiences. Relying on the cultural and narrative perspective in business history, the article shows the emergence of an unexpected consensus about the legitimacy of corporate offshoring between employers, Swiss authorities and even Swiss labour unions after 1945. The explanation for that counter-intuitive alliance is found in the actors’ representations and discourse about what they considered to be excessive economic circumstances. Indeed, during this golden age of considerable economic expansion, demand exceeded supply and the Swiss firms constantly complained of labour shortages. Offshoring was therefore seen as a cure for the lack of workers within Switzerland and allowed multinational companies to focus on the most lucrative production activities. Swiss workers and unions shared this view, preferring some low-skill activities to be done outside the country rather than seeing the arrival of more foreign workers, who tended to be less unionised and who were accused of aggravating the housing shortage. In response, the Swiss authorities supported the offshoring process by providing some tariff favours to allow textile firms in particular to relocate their production abroad and to reimport it to Switzerland without paying taxes. Finally, the article shows how the consensus broke down after the economic downturn of the mid-70 s and how changing historical circumstances induced new diverging narratives about the social desirability of the offshoring phenomenon.

Abstract:Conventions of Occupational Integration. The Employment of Disabled People in Swiss Enterprises (1950 to 1980)Disabled people's access to the labour market is one of the leading ideas in disability policy. Its success depends on the willingness of employers to employ handicapped people. Both historical and social studies focus on the welfare state or the people in question, while the perspective of the employers is often neglected. Under what conditions are companies willing to employ people whose performance diverges from the common interest to maximise economic output? Switzerland is well suited for a case study, since there are no regulations for employers, such as a quota-system. Incorporating the theory of «économie des conventions», this study investigates how employers' associations and companies justify employment of disabled people and how these people are valued. The timeframe investigated spans from the immediate post-war period to 1980.

Abstract:
Oospores of 11 charophyte species were found in the Late Quaternary gyttja deposits of Lake Bibersee near the town of Zug. Except for the Boreal period rarely more than three different species were growing simultaneously during the Holocene. This compares well to typical Characeae lakes of the same size today, and shows that considerable changes in the hydrophyte diversity have taken place through time. During the first part of the Holocene the lake was oligotrophic and the species composition was mainly regulated by lake-level fluctuations due to climatic factors. During the younger periods of the Holocene the lake became mesotrophic, and pH values were for a longer period slightly alkaline. During the Early to Middle Bronze Age (1900–1400 BC) the considerable alterations in the hydrophyte composition and the simultaneous extensive prehistoric agriculture on the fertile shores of the lake point to human impact as the primary cause for changes in charophyte diversity.

Abstract:
Forest damages from winter storms in Switzerland from 1865 to 2014 Winter storms cause the most catastrophic damages in Swiss forests. The present article analyses how these storm damages correspond with wind gust speed, growing stock and forest area, in regard to the whole country and individual cantons, and from 1865 to 2014. During the study period, 26 storm events each totalling a volume of at least 70,000 m3 damaged wood were registered. Winter storm damages were highly variable regarding absolute numbers (volume) and portions per area (m3 per ha) and per growing stock (%). In the past 150 years, the cantons Nidwalden, Freiburg, Aargau, Zurich and Zug were hit most often by storm events, with damages ranging per event in average from 2.2 m3 per ha (Zurich) to 3.1 m3 per ha (Nidwalden). At the turn of the millennium, not only the greatest damages occurred but also growing stock peaked as well did the wind gust speeds.

Abstract:
Background Eighty-eight thousand fall accidents occur each year in Switzerland among people aged 65 and over, which cause a lot of personal suffering and economic costs Beratungsstelle für Unfallverhütung BFU, 2019). The exercise at home program “DomiGym - Bewegungsangebot zu Hause” (in short: DomiGym) of Pro Senectute Switzerland aims to maintain mobility, counteract the risk of falls and promote social contacts as well as social participation and psychosocial health. Vulnerable, elderly people enjoy with DomiGym an adapted, regular training program focused on strength and balance, in their own homes or in their neighborhoods. Methodology The implementation and effects of the DomiGym offers in the cantons of Zug and Zurich were evaluated using various methodological approaches: tests of strength (Chair-Stand-Test; Mehmet et al., 2019), of balance (Modified Romberg; Agrawa et al., 2011) and of functional mobility (Timed-Up-and-Go-Test; Marks, 2016) as well as written surveys of participants (based on standardized scales used in the Swiss Health Survey). Results On average participants reduced fall risk and improved functional mobility and leg strength (p < 0.05). In a subsample of the canton of Zug, the Timed-Up-and-Go-Test (functional mobility and fall risk) improved by an average of 2.3 seconds (p < 0.005) and the balance test (Romberg) improved by 1.8 seconds (p = 0.005). Over the course of a training series the reduction in fall risk proved clinically relevant in both cantons. Scores on the Timed-Up-and-Go-Test fell on average below the threshold of 13.5 seconds discriminating between fallers and non-fallers. Chair-stand test: Participants improved on average from an initial very high fall risk to an increased fall risk (below 15 seconds). In fact the subsample of canton Zug improved by an average of 3.96 seconds (clinically relevant with regard to the reduction of falls) and the subsample of canton Zurich improved by an average of 2.17 seconds (approximately clinically relevant; threshold value 2.3 seconds; Meretta et al., 2006). DomiGym improved the general health (67%) of most participants and either maintained the original walking level (80%) or even improved it (15%). The majority of DomiGym participants do gymnastic exercises at least weekly outside of DomiGym training. DomiGym participants positively change their movement behavior in everyday life. Conclusions Pro Senectute’s DomiGym reaches older people who cannot or do not want to attend out-of-home physical activity programs. The implementation of DomiGym improves the physical functions of leg strength, functional mobility, and balance, as well as the risk of falls in vulnerable elderly people. It can be assumed that DomiGym reduces the frequency of falls in the long term, contributes to the preservation of mobility and independence in everyday life, including a longer stay in their own homes. Abstract:
Background Propofol (Disoprivan, AstraZeneca AG, Zug, Switzerland) has long been considered to be nonanalgesic. However, accumulating evidence shows that propofol possesses modulatory action on pain processing and perception. In this study, the authors investigated the modulatory effects of propofol and a formulation similar to the solvent of propofol (10% Intralipid; Fresenius Kabi, Stans, Switzerland) on pain perception and central sensitization in healthy volunteers. Methods Fourteen healthy volunteers were included in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study. Intracutaneous electrical stimulation (48.8 +/- 25.8 mA) induced spontaneous acute pain (Numeric Rating Scale, 6 of 10) and stable areas of hyperalgesia and allodynia. Pain intensities and areas of hyperalgesia were assessed regularly before, during, and after a 45-min target-controlled infusion (2 microg/ml) of propofol, the solvent 10% Intralipid, and saline. Results During administration, propofol significantly decreased pain scores and areas of hyperalgesia and allodynia compared with both 10% Intralipid and saline (placebo-corrected mean Numerical Rating Scale score reduction by propofol: 38 +/- 28%). This difference disappeared shortly after cessation of the infusion. Thereafter, no significant group differences were observed in the Numerical Rating Scale score and the areas of hyperalgesia or allodynia. However, there was a trend to reduced hyperalgesia and allodynia after propofol treatment. Pharmacodynamic modeling regarding the analgesic effect of propofol showed an EC50 (half-maximum effect site concentration) of 3.19 +/- 0.37 microg/ml. Ten percent Intralipid was free of pain-modulatory effects in the authors' experiments. Conclusions Propofol showed short-lasting analgesic properties during its administration, whereas the solvent-like formulation 10% Intralipid had no effect on pain perception.

Abstract:
The excellent preservation of the waterlogged botanical remains of the multiphase Neolithic pile-dwelling site of Zug-Riedmatt (Central Switzerland) yielded an ideal dataset to delve into the issue of plant economy of a community spanning several decades. The study identified a major change in crops where oil plants played a key role in the site’s initial phase before being supplanted over the course of a few decades by naked wheat, barley and pea. Wild plants continued to be gathered albeit in different proportions. In the latest settlement phase, the changes in the local vegetation and in the values of the analyses of carbon stable isotopes suggest a less humid environment. The hypothesis is that the changes perceived in the plant economy represent a resilience strategy adopted by the inhabitants in reaction to short term local climatic alterations. The two types of soil sampling techniques (monolith and bulk) allowed comparing these results. While the density of plant remains appears to be underestimated among the samples collected by the monolith technique, the proportions of economic taxa remain unaffected. The findings thus reveal that when the bulk samplings are distributed carefully throughout multiphase sites and avoid mixing stratigraphical units, and if the samplings are representative of all archaeological features from a whole area, then each of the two techniques offer analogous results.

Purpose. Investigating the efficacy of intravitreal injection of erythropoietin (EPO) in managing indirect traumatic optic neuropathy (ITON) of different durations.Methods. A case series that included two groups of ITON patients: recent ITON group (<3 months trauma duration; 7 eyes) and old duration ITON group (3–36 months; 7 eyes). Diagnostic computerized tomography (CT) and baseline flash visual evoked response (VER) were performed at the presentation time. At the initial visit and each follow-up, all patients had undergone assessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), pupil reaction, and anterior and posterior segments. VER was repeated 1 and 3 months after injection. All patients received an intravitreal injection of 2000 IU EPO in 0.2 ml of commercially available sterile EPREX 4000 solution, Jansen Cilag, Zug, Switzerland. Five patients had received a second injection 3 months later.Results. Significant improvement was found in BCVA, VER amplitude, and latency (P<0.0001, 0.0154, and 0.0291, respectively). Initial values of BCVA, VER amplitude, and latency correlated significantly to the final values. Differences between recent and old trauma groups were insignificant in the three parameters. In patients who received second injection, further clinical but statistically insignificant improvement was noted in BCVA in 60% of patients, VER amplitude in 50% of patients, and in VER latency in 100% of patients. No complications were recorded.Conclusion. Intravitreal injection of EPO may be effective and safe in treatment of recent and old indirect traumatic optic neuropathy.

Abstract:
In Switzerland, there is a large seasonal variation in sunlight, and vitamin D deficiency is relatively common during winter. The season of diagnosis may be linked to cancer survival via vitamin D status. Using data from the Cancer Registry of Zurich, Zug, Schaffhausen, and Schwyz with more than 171,000 cancer cases registered since 1980, we examined the association of the season of diagnosis with survival for cancers including prostate (ICD10 code C61; International Categorization of Diseases, version 10), breast (C50), colorectal (C18-21), lung (C34), melanoma (C43), and all sites combined. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the differences in the all-cause mortality by the season of the diagnosis. Winter was used as the reference season. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for all the cancers combined (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) and for prostate (in men), breast (in women), colorectal, lung cancer, and melanomas, separately. A diagnosis in summer and/or autumn was associated with improved survival in all the sites combined for both sexes (men: HR 0.97 [95% CI 0.96–0.99]; women: HR 0.97 [95% CI 0.94–0.99]) and in colorectal (HR 0.91 [95% CI 0.84–0.99]), melanoma (HR 0.81 [95% CI 0.65–1.00]), and breast cancer (HR 0.91 [95% CI 0.94–0.99]) in women. Our study results suggest that a cancer diagnosis in summer and/or autumn is associated with a better prognosis. The improved seasonal survival coincides with the seasonal variation of sun-induced vitamin D, and vitamin D may play a protective and beneficial role in cancer survival.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the self-reported health status and behaviours of 7th-grade adolescents, associations with gender and educational track, as well as health issues addressed during routine school doctor consultations in Switzerland. METHODS: Data on health status and behaviours, specifically general well-being, stimulant and addictive substance use, bullying/violence, exercise, nutrition and health protection, and puberty/sexuality, were drawn from routinely collected self-assessment questionnaires from 1076 (of a total of 1126) students from 14 schools in the Swiss canton of Zug in 2020. Data on health issues addressed in school doctor consultations were collected by nine school doctors (for 595 individual consultations). Multilevel logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the association of gender and educational track with unfavourable health status or behaviours. RESULTS: Although 92% (n = 989) of the students reported being happy or satisfied overall, 21% (n = 215) often or almost always felt sad, and 5-10% had repeatedly been seriously physically hurt (n = 67), sexually harassed with words (n = 88) or experienced uncomfortable physical contact (n = 60). Female gender and a lower educational track were associated with unfavourable health status. In 90% (n = 533) of the school doctor consultations, at least one topic of disease prevention or health promotion was addressed, whereby the topics addressed depended strongly on the individual school doctors. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings revealed that unfavourable health status and behaviours were prevalent among adolescents but the health topics addressed in school doctor consultations were not tailored to students’ self-reported health issues. A school-based approach that strengthens adolescents’ health literacy and provides opportunities for patient-centred counselling has the potential to improve the current and future health of adolescents and, ultimately, adults. To realise this potential, it is essential for school doctors to be sensitised and trained to address students’ health concerns. Emphasis should be placed on the importance of patient-centred counselling, the high prevalence of bullying, and gender and educational differences.

Abstract:
Oocyte collection is a key step to development of a system for modeling human regenerative medicine and assisted reproductive technology in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), but collecting oocytes at a suitable developmental stage (metaphase II) is difficult. Metaphase II (MII) oocytes can be collected from cynomolgus ovaries stimulated by hormone injection. In this study, we developed a useful method for collecting a large number of MII oocytes by monitoring the morphology and size of ovaries with laparoscopic observation. Controlled ovarian stimulation and oocyte recovery in mature cynomolgus monkeys have been previously described by Torii et al. (2000 Biochemistry 39, 3197–3205). Beginning at menses, levels of estrogens were down-regulated by the subcutaneous injection of a GnRH antagonist (Leuplin, 0.9 mg animal-1; Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd., Osaka, Japan). Two weeks later, human follicle stimulating hormone (FSH, Fertinorm, 25 IU kg-1; Serono, Canton Zug, Switzerland) was administered for 9 days. On the day after that of the last FSH administration, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, Puberogen, 400 IU kg-1; Sankyo Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) was intramuscularly injected. Follicular aspiration was performed at 404-41 hours post-hCG injection. Oocyte collection was monitored using a 3-mm laparoscope attached to a video system. Oocytes were aspirated from the follicles using a 20-guage needle. Follicle development of the ovary was rated morphologically as A (small follicles), B (many small follicles), or C (many large follicles), and size relative to the uterus was rated as 1 (no response), 2 (smaller), 3 (equal), or 4 (larger) at oocyte collection. Regarding morphology, the highest ratio of MII/total oocytes was obtained from B–C ovaries (rating of 2 ovaries, one each left or right with a rating of B or C, n = 8, 26.9 22.4, 70.7%), followed by B–B (n = 21, 19.5 14.3, 55.9%), and C–C (n = 19, 10.6 5.8, 51.9%). No MII oocytes were collected from A–A (n = 1, 0%) ovaries. Ovaries appeared to be over-stimulated in the ovaries rated C–C but under-stimulated in B–B. Regarding ovary size, the highest ratio of MII/total oocytes was obtained from 4–4 (both ovaries with rating of 4, n = 10, 21.9 11.2, 68.8%), followed by 3–3 (n = 21, 19.1 14.3, 58.2%), and 2–2 (n = 9, 11.6 6.5, 53.3%). No MII oocytes were collected from 1–1 ovaries (n = 1, 0%). The number of MII oocytes collected was directly related to ovary size: more MII oocytes were collected from larger ovaries. These data demonstrate that the number of oocytes collected is directly related to ovary size. Our results suggest that the ratio of MII oocytes can be predicted by the morphology and the size of ovaries. In addition, we found that ovarian development can be controlled by adjusting FSH dosage. Therefore, laparoscopic observation of ovaries during FSH treatment and adjusting FSH dosage are necessary to collect MII oocytes efficiently.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a serious clinical problem that can be caused by some cytotoxic agents used in breast cancer (BC) treatment, most commonly seen following taxane-based therapy[1,2]. Several strategies have been studied for CIPN prevention and treatment, but, still, there is no standard recommendation, options are limited and results unsatisfactory [1]. Cryotherapy is a technique that consists of reducing the blood flow in a certain area of the body by cold temperatures, in order to limit the cytotoxic reach. A few studies have been conducted to analyze the safety and efficacy of this strategy in CIPN prevention and treatment, and results are controversial [3,4,5]. More data is needed to clarify cryotherapy role in this clinical context. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of 40 BC patients treated at a single Brazilian institution between December 2019 and June 2022, aiming at efficacy and safety of cryotherapy in the prevention and treatment of CIPN. Cryotherapy was administered by the Hilotherm Clinic Chemo HT02 device (Hilotherm GmbH - Oberwil bei Zug, Switzerland [6]). The procedure consisted of patients using glove and sock-like devices on hands and feet throughout the chemotherapy infusion. The devices were pre-cooled to 10oC and then put on patients 30 minutes before starting, till one hour after the end of chemotherapy infusion. A questionnaire, as proposed by Leonard et al [7], was administered to patients every cycle to assess the development and severity of CIPN symptoms. Statistical analyses were performed by using a Cox regression model. Results Of the 40 patients analysed, 33 (83.5%) underwent a taxane-based regimen. The median number of cryotherapy sessions was three (ranging from 1 to 12), and, when excluded patients who underwent only one session of cryotherapy, the median was 4 (range 2 to 12). 75% of the 40 patients underwent cryotherapy in all chemotherapy sessions, or were still receiving chemo with cryotherapy by the time of our analysis. 80% of those who left treatment did so after the first session (HR 40.44 (CI95: 8.34 – 196.1; p< 0.0001). CIPN was stable or better than the baseline status for 26 (87%) of the 30 patients that underwent more than 1 session of cryotherapy; only 1 (25%) of the four patients who developed CIPN worse than the baseline status had grade 2 symptoms. Conclusion Cryotherapy is a safe and tolerable strategy that can be used during chemotherapy for breast cancer. Our data suggests that this is an efficient approach to prevent and treat CIPN, but the retrospective nature of the study and the small sample size must be considered when interpreting the results. Finally, strategies must be developed to further improve adherence and tolerability, and prospective randomized trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of cryotherapy in this context. 1. Abstract:
The paper deals with the doubling of the verb laa 'let' in the dialect of the city of Zug. The data are collected by means of written questionnaires. The results of this inquiry are compared with the results gained by the project SADS ('Syntactic Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland'). This comparison clearly shows differences in the results according to the elicitation techniques. It also shows that there is a greater variation with regard to the laa-doubling than illustrated by the SADS project. This variation seems to at least correlate with the age of the informants.

Abstract:
The symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are very common, but cannot be reliably controlled with medication, as more than 40% of patients suffer troublesome symptoms more than twice a week even when taking maximum doses of proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Until recently, the only surgical option was anti-reflux surgery, usually performed as a hiatal hernia repair and some form of fundoplication. While this is still the gold standard, some centers note high recurrence rates and/or high rates of side effects such as dysphagia, bloating, and post-prandial discomfort. This paper describes a new surgical procedure that controls reflux symptoms through hiatal hernia repair in combination with the implantation of a silicone cube. The cube is implanted near the left side of the esophagus above the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The details of the procedure, the indications for this new approach, the initial results, and the rate of side effects compared to Nissen fundoplication are described. Implantation of the CE-certified RefluxStop™ (Implantica, Zug, Switzerland) has been used for 3 years and the initial studies show encouraging success rates. In addition, side effects are significantly reduced. These results must be evaluated in further studies.
