Full textPopulation growth and urbanization are major challenges for the management of cities and their resources. Urban mobility is one of these challenges because of its impact on quality of life, economic productivity, and environmental sustainability. In this thesis, the concept of time management is integrated into a new approach to reduce urban mobility congestion. Traditional methods primarily focus on spatial aspects, thus neglecting the temporal dimension. We concentrate on integrating concepts from the Social and Human Sciences (SHS), particularly sociological concepts, into Sciences and Technologies of Information and Communication (STIC) to propose a decision-support solution for the time bureaus, which aims to modify temporalities to reduce urban congestion. The proposed approach consists of three phases: identifying mobility profiles, analyzing traffic congestion, and making temporal decisions. Mobility profiles are predicted using learning techniques that take into account sociological criteria. Traffic congestion analysis investigates Waze data. Finally, the use of time series models allows us to predict congestion levels to propose optimized departure times to avoid urban congestion. The proposed solution has the potential to integrate a set of heterogeneous data in congestion management for harmonious urban cities

Full textThe aim of this research is to question and clarify the use of the term event when talking about architectural realizations and the phenomena that occur around them. It has been conducted by analyzing three European tall building and business districts – the City, La Défense, and Frankfurt – which seem propitious for the location of events. Just like any other event, the architectural one is not viewed here as a spontaneous given which occurs in and of itself but as a construction in which a variety of actors take part, from the client who organizes the competition beforehand all the way to the media who, in the aftermath of the event, generate its reception. This construction is characteristic of recent times. The architectural event such as we define it is not a mere mode of existence of the event but the product of a special relationship to time which some historians see as being only preoccupied with the present and define thanks to the notion of regime of historicity. In the districts studied, the event takes the form of a staging of the existing by way of festivals or thanks to the completion of buildings which present themselves as timeless and devoid of any question of style. It no longer necessarily leads to a breach. But while this phenomenon has all gazes turned toward the architecture of the buildings, it also diminishes their architectural characteristics. By becoming an event in itself or being used for festive events, architecture is henceforth only considered through the angle of a limited number of typological questions and that of its ability to distinguish itself in order to be remembered. These two aspects are seen as the irreducible facets of architecture, those which cannot be dissolved in the event. They are the final levers of action for the architect who is faced with a demand for events

Full textSince the 1970s, part-time employment has grown in the German and French labour markets. The relation between public intermediation and part-time employment is the subject of this thesis. Our comparative analysis is based on ethnographic immersion in four agencies, a quantitative analysis of 2000 job offers stored in the agencies files and a socio-historical inquiry concerning the unemployment benefit systems. With these data, we expose the temporal transactions experienced by the unemployed during their institutional treatment. Within the agencies, the working hours sought by the unemployed represent a tool with three functions: managing the registered users, matching employers and jobseekers, and arbitrating the relation between capital and labour. These hours are mobilized, manipulated and negotiated during the compulsory interviews between caseworkers and unemployed. Thus, many research profiles are modified, in the sens of lowering the desired amount of employment hours. This rationing of hours is organized around three modes of regulation, always perceptible but inequally significant in the various agencies: benefits-oriented regulation, professional regulation and computerized regulation. The working hours the unemployed look for appear as an object of public action. Based on our empirical results, we show how the configuration of bureaucratic encounters establish a close relation between the social resources mobilized during the interaction and the position on the labour market. In addition, this thesis present the employment agencies as an autonomous level of employment regulation

Full textOpposition to the war by the Second International has often been considered a failure. This judgment, however, is reductive and tends to read the whole history of this organization on the basis of its position in 1914. In this study the International is investigated independently of the outbreak of the First World War. Our focus is on the struggle against the war by French, German, and Italian Socialists within the International and independently of it. Particular attention is paid to the international diplomatie crises that foliowed one anotheruntil 1914. The resuit is ambivalent. On the one hand, the Internationale efforts against the war no longer appears as a failure. The institution succeeds in creating a sensé of community based on the will to oppose the war. While the crises corne and go, it learns to respond to international crises. On the other hand, the performativity of the opposition to the war changes when France, Germany, and Italy are directly involved in diplomatie crises. When a country is in danger, its socialists express feelings of mistrust towards foreign comrades, which temporarily prevents the International from taking effective initiatives against the dangerous international situation

Full textIn our industrialized countries, sedentary behaviours lead to health issues for many workers, as the physical demands of their work are now insufficient. To answer this problem, the research focuses on active workstations (standing, with pedals or treadmill workstations) which compared to the conventional workstation allow workers to increase physical load at work and thus, reduce daily sedentary time. When compared to the conventional (sit) workstation, active workstations have effects on physiological and biomechanical biomarkers related to better health. Also, they offer some advantages over workers’ productivity and wellbeing at work. Despite the accumulation of knowledge about active workstations, the differences between active workstations are still unknown. This thesis is aimed at understanding and comparison between active workstation types, specifically their impacts on sedentary time at work, their effects on physiological and biomechanical biomarkers and their effects on productivity and well-being at work. The results and the discussion are developed around a systematic review article (Dupont et al., 2019) and an article from an experimental research submitted in October 2019. First of all, the benefits associated with each type of active workstation (i.e. standing, cycling, treadmill) may not be equivalent. Cycling and treadmill workstations appear to provide greater short-term physiologic changes than standing workstations that could potentially lead to better health. Cycling, treadmill and standing workstations appear to show short-term productivity benefits, while treadmill workstations reduce the performance of computer-related work. Secondly, in the short term (2 weeks), the introduction of a standing workstation and a pedal workstation in their office allows workers to accumulate an average of 132 minutes of active time (i.e. work done with standing and/or cycling workstations) per day, which represents 46% of the total time spent in their personal workspace. As a result, workers reduce their total desk-sitting time by half and sat on average 30 minutes per sedentary bout. Based on our findings, adding two active workstations to an office worker’s helps reduce sedentary time at work.
