Abstract:
Ageing has increasingly become a severe social problem nowadays, resulting in burden for both whole society and each family unit. Jiangsu is a typical aging province in China with dramatically increasing aging population. This paper analyzed Andersen behavioral model theoretically and empirically, and made an overview about older adults’ healthcare services utilization behavior from three aspects, namely, predisposing characteristics, enabling resources, and need factors. This paper revealed that it is significant to apply Andersen behavioral model in older adults’ healthcare services utilization in Jiangsu to understand older adults’ healthcare enrollment behavior, and provide evidence for healthcare services providers and policy makers to better manage and allocate social resources to improve services quality thus relieve family pressure brought by aging society.

Abstract:
Family members are important to the well-being of their relatives with substance use disorders or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. Many caregivers experience high levels of burden, negatively impacting their capacity to provide support to their ill family member. The Andersen health care utilization model (Andersen & Newman, 1973, 2005) was used to identify the impact of predisposing, enabling, and need factors hypothesized to predict caregivers’ likelihood of asking for help and support with their caregiving role. The sample include 82 women recruited from outpatient or inpatient substance abuse treatment centers and 82 family caregivers nominated by these women. Findings showed that almost half of caregivers were unlikely to ask for help. Multiple regression analysis found that two need variables were statistically significant predictors of caregivers’ likelihood to ask for help. Caregivers who had higher subject burden (worry) and caregivers who provided more assistance with daily living were more likely to ask for help. It is suggested that case managers assess the amount of worried family caregivers’ experience because their worries may provide the motivation to ask for help or to participate in help when it is offered to them.

Abstract:
AbstractPopulation ageing in China calls for evidence-based solutions, especially in terms of fulfilling long-term care needs among frail older adults. Respite services are identified as effective resources for alleviating care-giver burden and promoting the wellbeing of both older adults and their family care-givers. However, respite care is often under-used in China. This research aimed to examine factors associated with intention to use respite services among informal care-givers in Shanghai, mainland China. This study was part of the Longitudinal Study on Family Caregivers for Frail Older Adults in Shanghai. Pairs of older adults and their care-givers (N = 583) who successfully completed the 2013 and 2016 waves were included in the data analysis. Two logistic regression models were conducted, one with time-invariant and one with time-variant factors. The model with time-variant factors had greater explanatory power than the original Andersen model with time-invariant factors influencing intention to use respite services among care-givers. Care-givers had higher odds of intending to use respite services if they had higher care-giving burden, were caring elderly people who experienced care-giver transitions, or were caring for elderly people with increased function of ambulation or decreased function of feeding. The findings imply that change in functional health was a significant determinant of intention to use respite care. Relevant policy and service implications will be discussed.

Abstract After Greece had been conquered by the troops of the Axis Powers in spring 1941, they installed a rule of occupation existing until october 1944. The Government in Athens had to finance this occupation by making payments in advance and besides, making a forced credit available. This method led to an exorbitant overloading of the Greek economy and to a galloping inflation. The German Tax and Finance Ministry played an important, yet hardly noticed role as to the concrete implementation of the monetary exploitation. Almost unknown documents throw a light on the financing of the German Wehrmacht during WW II. Besides, the real burden on the Greek economy shall be estimated and connected with the general questions of war financing in the Third Reich.

Abstract:
ObjectiveOut-of-pocket pharmaceutical expenditure (OOPPE) is a considerable burden for middle-aged and elderly adults due to their high prevalence of diseases, insufficient income and absence of medical insurance in China. The objective of this study was to assess the determinants of OOPPE among Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey conducted in 2015. The Andersen behavioural health model was used to select the factors. Binary multivariable logistic and generalised linear regressions were both applied to examine the determinants of OOPPE.ResultsOf the respondents, 15.28%, 5.20% and 51.35% reported an OOPPE for outpatient services, inpatient services and self-medication, respectively. The OOPPE for outpatient services, inpatient services and self-medication was US$6.66, US$17.93 and US$15.32, respectively. Increased age significantly influenced the likelihood of OOPPE, and older people (aged >65 years) had lower OOPPE for outpatient services. Having health insurance significantly reduced the likelihood of OOPPE for outpatient and inpatient services but increased OOPPE for self-medication. In general, compared with the low-income group, higher income groups had a significantly lower likelihood of having an OOPPE, and when they did the amounts were less. Generally, middle-aged and elderly people with poor self-reported health status, limitation of daily activities, and critical or chronic diseases had a significantly higher likelihood of having an OOPPE and at a significantly higher amount.ConclusionPolicy-making efforts should focus on reducing self-medication OOPPE and alleviating its associated socioeconomic determinants to ease the economic burden of diseases among middle-aged and elderly adults in China.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This concluding chapter illustrates segments of various interviews Paul Thomas Anderson has given about his feature films, and interviews with actors, such as Philip Seymour Hoffman on The Master. Ultimately, one of the main strands of argument in this book is that Anderson continues to guard the story of his mother that “he might tell;” and yet, the story is always working its way into his narratives about fathers, and carries the real burden of the narrative mystery. The motivation of Anderson's male protagonists in the three films—Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, and The Master—becomes increasingly deformed, and in each case the mangling pressure derives from the protagonist's inability to secure a crucial lost balance and alignment with absent maternal shades.

Abstract:
South American Camelids (SAC) occupied a central role in the development of Andean societies and were an essential element of the cultural landscape. During the Inca period camelids had a major significance to people, integrating their economy, social, political, and ritual life. Camelids were a key instrument for the expansion and establishment of the Inca Empire. Llamas were used as beasts of burden for transporting goods along extensive redistribution networks that connected the highlands, valleys, and Pacific coast. From a utilitarian perspective camelids provided different products (e.g. meat, wool). This chapter illustrates the strategies used by the Incas for managing these ungulates by presenting some case studies from the Qollasuyu, the southeastern quarter of the Inca Empire.

Abstract:

Abstract When the Peruvian archaeologist Julio César Tello (1880–1947) died of cancer, his body and legacy as an Indigenous intellectual entered an afterlife as complex as that of the Paracas mummy bundles he studied. This chapter shows how the Peruvian state, his students, and American colleagues buried him three times over. The first two times were literal. Despite years of financial neglect, the Peruvian state interred the “good Indian” in the country’s pantheon for statesmen and elites. A year later, however, his students fulfilled his desire to be interred in his final museum’s patio, beneath an Andean monolith yards away from the disturbed mummies that, according to his Huarochirí countrymen, may have killed him. His third, metaphorical burial was by American anthropology in the Smithsonian’s Hall of Physical of Anthropology in 1965, which appropriated his findings regarding Paracas’s Andean trepanners and repainted them as Incas at Machu Picchu.

Abstract Peat is a soil type with a very high organic content. It is defined, for the purposes of this chapter, as a soil at least 50 cm deep which, when dried and burned, will lose more than 65% of its mass (Driessen 1977), and is therefore more than 65% organic matter. Certain international agricultural-oriented criteria now define peat as a soil with more than 30% organic matter (Driessen and Soepraptohardjo 1974), but peatswamp forests do not develop on such soils (Anderson 1964). It is estimated that the natural area of peat soils in Sumatra was once 7.3-9.7 million ha (Andriesse 1974), or about one-quarter of all tropical peat lands (Driessen 1977).

Abstract Dung and carrion are the textbook examples of patchy and ephemeral resources. In reality, they range many orders of magnitude in habitat patch size and durational stability, as well as in their density in the surrounding environment. African savannas in the rainy season present one end of the continuum (Kingston 1977). Innumerable dung pats, marking the trails of herds of large herbivores, are hot spots of beetle life: Anderson and Coe (1974) counted 16000 dung beetles arriving at a 1.5 kg heap of elephant dung in East Africa. Working in West African savannas, Cambefort (1984) estimated that beetles bury 1 metric tonne of dung per hectare per year. Locating the resource may not be a great problem in the savanna ecosystem, but competition is: the above elephant pat was eaten, buried and rolled away in 2 hours.

Hans Christian Ørsted discovered electromagnetism in 1820. We visit Ørsted sites on the island of Langeland, his birthplace, and in Copenhagen where plaques and statues celebrate his life and discovery. Niels Bohr is one of the most famous names in the development of the atomic concept. After earning his PhD at the University of Copenhagen in 1911, he went to England where he worked with J. J. Thomson and Ernest Rutherford. In the Bohr–Rutherford atom, he boldly asserted that classical laws are not valid inside the atom and needed to be replaced with the quantum ideas of Planck and Einstein. After explaining his theory and how it was received by his peers, we explore the many Bohr sites in Copenhagen including his birthplace, childhood home, and the Bohr family graves in the cemetery where Ørsted, Hans Christian Andersen, and Soren Kirkegard are also buried. When we finally visit the Niels Bohr Institute, we more fully appreciate his extraordinary influence on the physics of his time. At the end of the chapter, we briefly discuss two famous Danish astronomers, Tycho Brahe and Ole Rømer, and describe some relevant sites that celebrate their lives and work.

Abstract:
Abstract The murder of children, and infanticide more specifically, have been especially common areas of female criminality and equally difficult for the authorities to control. Until the late nineteenth century and the advent of the insanity plea which offered the authorities a way to explain female maternal violence as a temporary behavioural aberration, the courts struggled to deal with murderous mothers. The judicial system found it hard to explain such behaviour within the confines of prevailing gender norms, especially when the motive for the offence was unclear or uncertain. This chapter examines two such perplexing cases that confronted the Scottish judiciary, those of Barbara Malcolm in 1808 and Catherine Anderson of 1883. These cases, and their lack of certainty of motive, give us valuable evidence of discussions around contemporary perceptions of maternity and femininity at the start of the nineteenth century. Such concepts emerge as often transient. Although the latter part of the century became dominated by an obsession with maternity, this was not translated into a campaign against murderous and bad mothers. Instead it became a crusade to ease the burden of motherhood, thereby side-lining the gendered construction of the ‘bad mother’.

Joseph von Fraunhofer, the prism-maker, discovered the dark lines in the solar spectrum, (“Fraunhofer lines”) that are the fingerprints of atoms in our Sun. We explore his glassworks in Benediktbeuren and a variety of Fraunhofer sites in Munich including the Deutsches Museum. In Heidelberg, Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff used a prism to break the light from elemental “flame tests” into unique sets of spectral lines. Using their spectroscope, they discovered two new elements (cesium and rubidium) in the spa waters of Bad Dürkheim and correlated Fraunhofer's lines with various earth-bound elements. We explore a variety of Bunsen and Kirchhoff sites including the Hörsaal of the Chemistry Department with its stunning collection of Bunsen equipment and compounds and Beatrix Potter's watercolor of mice using a Bunsen burner to make toasted cheese. We also find houses where various other famous scientists lived and worked in Heidelberg and walk the Philosophenweg. Anders Angstrom's and Pierre Janssen's discoveries of hydrogen and helium on the Sun and the discoveries of thallium by Crookes, indium by Reich and Richter, and gallium by Lecoq de Boisbaudran are described. Johann Balmer's empirical equation for hydrogen line spectra is given and discussed.

This chapter analyses attitudes towards sickness in the 1980s and 1990s to explain how and why the government was able to restrict access to incapacity benefit through new forms of testing. At the same time, the rise of ‘sick note’ as a rhetorical device in the national media reflected both the ubiquity of sick notes in everyday life and the concerns British people had about the adequacy of sickness systems. Using media coverage from the time, this chapter shows that attitudes towards ‘scroungers’ and potential malingerers played into a political rhetoric of ‘getting tough’ on people who were considered undeserving of state support. ‘Sicknotes’ like footballer Darren Anderton, Bert Quigley from London’s Burning, or actor Martine McCutcheon said something about Britain’s attitudes to providing help to people with mental or physical health conditions that affected their ability to work. The bureaucratic and medico-sociological justifications for the Conservative government’s approach informed New Labour’s reforms to disability benefits in the 2000s; but they must also be put into the wider context of changing attitudes to sickness and to paid employment since the 1940s.

Abstract:
Seton Lake is a freshwater fiord located in southwestern British Columbia, roughly 4 km west of Lillooet and 250 km north-northeast of Vancouver. Located in the Coast Mountains, it is an alpine lake about 22-km long and roughly 1-1.5 km wide. It is separated from nearby Anderson Lake, located to the west, by a large pre-historic rock avalanche deposit at Seton Portage. The lake stands at about 243 m above sea level and is up to about 150 m deep (BC gov., 1953). Water level is controlled by a hydroelectric dam (i.e., Seton dam) located at the eastern end of the lake. Here, the lake drains east into Seton Canal, a 5 km diversion of the flow of the Seton River, which begins at the Seton dam. The Seton Canal pushes water to the Seton Powerhouse, a hydroelectric generating station at the Fraser River, just south of the community of Sekw'el'was and confluence of the Seton River, which drains into the Fraser River at Lillooet. Seton Portage, Shalatlh, South Shalatlh, Tsal'alh (Shalath), Sekw'el'was (Cayoosh Creek), and T'it'q'et (Lillooet) are communities that surround the lake. Surrounded by mountainous terrain, the lake is flanked at mid-slope by glacial and colluvial sediments deposited during the last glacial and deglacial periods (Clague, 1989; Jakob, 2018). The bedrock consists mainly of mafic to ultramafic volcanic rocks with minor carbonate and argillite from the Carboniferous to Middle Jurassic periods (Journeay and Monger, 1994). As part of the Public Safety Geoscience Program at the Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada), our goal is to provide baseline geoscience information to nearby communities, stakeholders and decision-makers. Our objective was to see what kind of sediments were deposited and specifically if we could identify underwater landslide deposits. Thus, we surveyed the lake using a Pinger SBP sub bottom profiler made by Knudsen Engineering Ltd., with dual 3.5 / 200 kHz transducers mounted to a small boat (see photo). This instrument transmits sound energy down through the water column that reflects off the lake bottom surface and underlying sediment layers. At the lake surface, the reflected sound energy is received by the profiler, recorded on a laptop computer, and integrated with GPS data. These data are processed to generate a two-dimensional image (or profile) showing the character of the lake bottom and underlying sediments along the route that the boat passed over. Our survey in 2022 recorded 98 profiles along Seton Lake. The red transect lines show the locations of the 20 profiles displayed on the poster. The types of sediments observed are mostly fine-grained glaciolacustrine sediments that are horizontally bedded with a subtle transition between glaciolacustrine to lacustrine (e.g., profiles A-A'; C-C'; F-F'; S-S'). Profile S-S' displays this transition zone. The glaciolacustrine sediments probably were deposited as the Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreated from the local area (~13,000-11,000 years ago; Clague, 2017) and the lacustrine sediments, after the ice receded to present-day conditions. Some of the parallel reflections are interrupted, suggesting abrupt sedimentation by deposits that are not horizontally bedded; these are interpreted as landslide deposits (see pink or blue deposits on profiles). The deposits that show disturbance in the sedimentation found within the horizontal beds are thought to be older landslides (e.g., blue arrows/deposits in profiles C-C'; E-E'; F-F'; G-G'; I-I'; J-J'; K-K'; N-N'; P-P'; Q-Q'; R-R'; T-T'; U-U'), but the ones that are found on top of the horizontally laminated sediments (red arrows/pink deposits), and close to the lake wall, are interpreted to be younger (e.g., profiles B-B'; C-C'; H-H'; K-K'; M-M'; O-O'; P-P'; Q-Q'). At the fan delta just west of Seton dam, where there was no acoustic signal penetration, it is interpreted that the delta failed and brought down coarser deposits at the bottom of the lake (e.g., profiles H-H'; M-M'; and perhaps K-K'). However, these could be glacial deposits, bedrock, or other coarser deposits. Some of the deposits that reflect poor penetration of the acoustic signal, below the glaciolacustrine sediments, could represent glacial deposits, old landslide deposits, or perhaps the presence of gas (orange arrows; e.g, B-B'; D-D'; J-J'; O-O', T-T'). The preliminary results from sub bottom profiling reveal that there are underwater landslides deposits of widely varying ages buried in the bottom of the lake. However, the exact timing of these is not known. Hence our preliminary survey gives an overview of the distribution of landslides where there seems to be a larger number of landslides recorded in the narrower eastern portion of the lake.
