Abstract:
By using an integrative approach, we describe a new species of mayfly, Bungona (Chopralla) ponticasp. n., from Turkey. The discovery of a representative of the tropical mayfly genusBungonain the Middle East is rather unexpected. The new species shows all the main morphological characters of the subgenus Chopralla, which has its closest related species occurring in southeastern Asia. Barcoding clearly indicated that the new species represents an independent lineage isolated for a very long time from other members of the complex. The claw is equipped with two rows of three or four flattened denticles. This condition is a unique feature of Bungona (Chopralla) ponticasp. n.among West Palaearctic mayfly species. Within the subgenus Chopralla, the species can be identified by the presence of a simple, not bifid right prostheca (also present only in Bungona (Chopralla) liebenauae (Soldán, Braasch & Muu, 1987)), the shape of the labial palp, and the absence of protuberances on pronotum.

Abstract:
The East Aceh Regency Community, Women's and Family Empowerment Agency (BPMPKS) through the field of women's empowerment currently has 21 productive business groups of poor women that have been running since 2010 until now. The productive business groups of these poor women have various types of business products that are run such as making cookies, presto milkfish, pandanus matting, grocery business, salted fish production, making organic fertilizers and others. One of the matting groups that has grown rapidly from the production side is the bungong chirih women's business group, which until now has more than 20 members. The results of the woven mat products provided are in great demand by the community because of the reliability quality can be proven. But from the marketing side it still needs further improvement to be able to develop. The current PKM activity is to provide e-marketing-based entrepreneurship training. This is because so far the marketing of the production of woven mats still revolves around the local scale. So with the entrepreneurship training, it is expected that the marketing scale can be broader and reach the five countries. Based on the results of this training, every member of the Chirih Bungon group has been able to use marketing media on line to market the matting products.

Abstract:
The genus Centroptella Braasch & Soldán, 1980 is accepted here in a wide sense, i.e., including Chopralla Waltz & McCafferty, 1987. This genus concept is similar to the concept of the genus Bungona Harker, 1957 proposed by Salles et al. (2016), but with the generic name Centroptella instead of Bungona. The type species of Bungona, B. narilla Harker, 1957, has an unknown systematic position; the neotype designation proposed by Suter and Pearson (2001) is invalid, being inconsistent with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature; the species name B. narilla and the generic name Bungona are nomina dubia, so the name Centroptella is the senior name for the genus under consideration. The generic names Chopralla and Crassolus Salles, Gattolliat & Sartori, 2016 both are junior synonyms of Centroptella (syn. nov.). The subgenera Bungona, Centroptella and Chopralla proposed by Salles et al. (2016) are unnatural. The following new combinations are proposed: Centroptella bintang (Marle, Salles & Gattolliat, 2016) comb. nov., Centroptella bifida (Shi & Tong, 2019) comb. nov., Centroptella fusina (Tong & Dudgeon, 2003) comb. nov., Centroptella fustipalpus (Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998) comb. nov., Centroptella illiesi (Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998) comb. nov., Centroptella inzingae (Crass, 1947) comb. nov., Centroptella papilionodes (Marle, Salles & Gattolliat, 2016) comb. nov., Centroptella pontica (Sroka, Godunko & Gattolliat, in Sroka et al. 2019) comb. nov., Centroptella ovata (Shi & Tong, 2019) comb. nov., Centroptella quadrata (Shi & Tong, 2019) comb. nov. and Centroptella saxophila (Agnew, 1961) comb. nov. The two Australian species, C. fustipalpus and C. illiesi, differ from each other in the shape of tergalii; corrections to the original description of C. fustipalpus are given based on re-examination of the holotype and paratypes; details of larval structures of C. illiesi are figured. Corrections to the former descriptions of the South African species C. inzingae and C. saxophila are given. Examination of type material led to the discovery that the original description of the Oriental species Centroptella liebenauae Soldán, Braasch & Muu, 1987 was based on two different species: the descriptions of imago and subimago belong to Centroptella longisetosa Braasch & Soldán, 1980 (the type species of Centroptella), and the description of larva belongs to a different species, which we describe here as Centroptella ingridaesp. nov. The holotype of C. liebenauae, a larva, should be considered lost; based on the date of collection, it belonged to C. longisetosa; a set of larval exuviae with the same collecting data as the holotype, is designated as the neotype of C. liebenauae, and a new synonymy is established: C. longisetosa = C. liebenauaesyn. nov. The larvae originally assigned to C. liebenauae are placed to a new species Centroptella ingridaesp. nov. belonging to the inzingae-ingridae species group; all stages of development of this species are described based on male and female imagines reared from larvae in Thailand and on the misidentified paratypes of C. liebenauae from Vietnam. Centroptella longisetosa is redescribed based on the single paratype from China, the neotype and paratypes of C. liebenauae from Vietnam, and additional material from India. Additional data on the holotype of Centroptella colorata Soldán, Braasch & Muu, 1987 are given.

Abstract:
"Mushaf Baiturrahman Cod.Or.2064 (Historical Studies and Illumination)" is the title of this study. The declaration of the Dutch war against Aceh in 1873 had an impact on the people of Aceh, since it resulted in the deaths of Acehnese combatants and academics, as well as the destruction of evidence of Acehnese civilisation. One of these was the burning of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, which resulted in the scorching and loss of numerous manuscripts and manuscripts, some of which were even transported back to their homelands by foreign invaders. The Baiturrahman Mushaf is one of the manuscripts, and it is presently in the collection of Leiden University with the designation Cod.Or. 2064. The issue in this research is how the historical worth and illumination of the manuscripts are preserved. The aim of the article is to determine the historical significance of the Baiturrahman Cod.Or Mushaf. 2064, as well as the manuscript's existence at Leiden University. In addition, the goal of this work is to examine how the themes in the text illuminations are used. This is a qualitative study that employs library research data gathering methods, observations, and documentation, as well as descriptive analysis to examine data. According to the study, the Baiturrahman Cod.Or.2064 Mushaf was a manuscript discovered by JHA Ijseel de Schepper, a commander of the Dutch army, beside the body of an imam of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque during the first Dutch military invasion in Aceh in 1873. This document has now been added to the library collection at Leiden University. The illumination in the Baiturrahman Cod.Or.2064 Mushaf may be found at the beginning, middle, and end of the Mushaf. This mushaf illumination motif, in general, follows the same patterns as other Acehnese manuscript illuminations, such as being square with a little "wing" form on the side. Bungong Pucuk Rebung, Lampu Gantung, Bungong Seuleupok, Bungong Tabu, Bungong Puta Taloe, Bungong Sagoe, Bungong Seumanga, Sulur Bunga Daun, Talo Ie, Sulur Bayung, Dada Limpeun, and Madu Sarang are some of the illumination patterns found on the Baiturrahman Cod.Or.2064 Mushaf.

Abstract:
Background An. funestus is a major Afrotropical vector of human malaria. This study sought to investigate the larval ecology, sporozoite infection rates and blood meal sources of An. funestus in western Kenya. Methods Larval surveys were carried out in Bungoma (Highland) and Kombewa (lowland) of western Kenya. Aquatic habitats were identified, characterized, georeferenced and carefully examined for mosquito larvae and predators. Indoor resting mosquitoes were sampled using pyrethrum spray catches. Adults and larvae were morphologically and molecularly identified to species. Sporozoite infections and blood meal sources were detected using real-time PCR and ELISA respectively. Results Of the 151 aquatic habitats assessed, 62/80 (78%) in Bungoma and 58/71(82%) in Kombewa were positive for mosquito larvae. Of the 3,193 larvae sampled, An. funestus larvae constitute 38% (1224/3193). Bungoma recorded a higher number of An. funestus larvae (85%, 95%, CI, 8.722–17.15) than Kombewa (15%, 95%, CI, 1.33–3.91). Molecular identification of larvae showed that 89% (n = 80) were An. funestus. Approximately 59%, 35% and 5% of An. funestus larvae co-existed with An. gambiae s.l, Culex spp and An. coustani in the same habitats respectively. Of 1,221 An. funestus s.l adults sampled, molecular identifications revealed that An. funestus constituted 87% (n = 201) and 88% (n = 179) in Bungoma and Kombewa, respectively. The Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite rate of An. funestus in Bungoma and Kombewa was 2% (3/174) and 1% (2/157), respectively, and the human blood index of An. funestus was 84% (48/57) and 89% (39/44) and for Bungoma and Kombewa, respectively. Conclusion Man-made ponds had the highest abundance of An. funestus larvae. Multiple regression and principal component analyses identified the distance to the nearest house as the key environmental factor associated with the abundance of An. funestus larvae in aquatic habitats. This study serves as a guide for the control of An. funestus and other mosquito species to complement existing vector control strategies.

AbstractObjectiveTo establish the food consumption, dietary habits and nutritional status of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and adults whose HIV status is not established.DesignCross-sectional descriptive survey.SettingThika and Bungoma Districts, Kenya.SubjectsA random sample of 439 adults; 174 adults living with HIV/AIDS and 265 adults whose HIV/AIDS status was not established in Thika and Bungoma Districts.ResultsMajority of PLWHA consume foods that are low in nutrients to build up the immune system and help maintain adequate weight, and there is little variety in the foods they consume. More adults who are HIV-positive are undernourished than those whose status is not established. Of the HIV-positive adults, those with a BMI of ≤18·5 kg/m2 were 23·6 % (Thika 20·0 % and Bungoma 25·7 %) while of the adults whose status is not established those with BMI ≤ 18·5 kg/m2 were 13·9 % (Thika 9·3 % and Bungoma 16·7 %).ConclusionsAdults who are HIV-positive are more likely to be undernourished than those whose status is not established, as there is a significant difference (P = 0·000) between the nutritional status (BMI) of PLWHA and those whose HIV/AIDS status is not established. PLWHA consume foods that are low in nutrients to promote their nutritional well-being and health.

Abstract:
Subsidization of the public secondary school education by the government of Kenya in 2008 witnessed a tremendous growth in the student population at this level of education. This scenario led to an over enrollment and a strain on the existing learning facilities and infrastructure in most public secondary schools in Kenya, including those in Bungoma County . Under these circumstances, the question that remained unanswered was ; what was the effect of the subsidized secondary education policy (SSEP) on the student pass rates in the Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) in the public secondary schools in Bungoma County ? The purpose of this study was to analyze the change brought about by the SSEP on the student pass rates in the KCSE in public secondary schools in Bungoma County, Kenya. The findings of this study revealed that, the subsidized secondary education policy significantly improved the student pass rates in KCSE in the public secondary schools in the County, from a mean of 70.53% before the introduction of the subsidy, to a mean of 75.82% after introduction of the subsidy, with a p-value of less than 0.05( p<0.05). In conclusion, the SSEP improved the student pass rates in the KCSE. On the basis of the conclusion, it was recommended that the government should uphold the subsidized secondary education policy in public secondary schools, because it has the potential to sustain improved student pass rates in KCSE in public secondary schools in Bungoma County and Kenya at large.

Abstract:
Diagnosis is the foundation of a correct intervention. However, diagnostic errors result in wrong interventions. This is a global phenomenon, where it is a common problem; which has been understudied. Looking at the Philippines, diagnostic errors are three times most likely to make pregnant women develop obstetric complications. In Kenya, there is a high annual maternal mortality prevalence ratio of 362/100,000 live births, with Bungoma County exceeding the national maternal mortality prevalence ratio of 382/100,000 live births annually. Maternal mortality more often than not, a factor, that arises from morbidity is fuelled by diagnostic errors that required determination of its consequences on obstetric outcomes in Bungoma county. Thus, this study investigated the prevalence of diagnostic errors as predictors of obstetric outcomes among post-natal mothers in Bungoma County. The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional research design, which was hospital-based (Bungoma and Webuye hospitals). Systematic sampling was used to obtain 384 respondents and purposive sampling to select 8 health care workers as key informants. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and an interview guide. the pre-test was done; validity was established through crosschecking and reliability calculated using the Cronbach method (0.89). Using a statistical package for social sciences version 25, descriptive statistics were run. The study revealed a prevalence ratio of 3.996 whereas delayed diagnosis was 43.1%, missed 38.8%, absent diagnosis 27.5%, wrong diagnosis 34.9%, misinterpretation of results 24.1, unmatched 26.3% and unnecessary investigation 9.3%. The study demonstrates that a correct diagnosis is a viable strategy in preventing unsafe obstetric outcomes and by extension minimizing morbidity and mortality among pregnant women.

Abstract:
Risk factors associated with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) have previously been identified, but few studies have described the relationship between IUGR and maternal stress caused by exposure to civil unrest. Here, we investigate this relationship during the Mount Elgon crisis in western Kenya between 2006 and 2008, following a period of violence. Birth weight data were compared between three hospitals in an exposed area, Mount Elgon (n=570), and one hospital in a control area, Kimilili (n=530). In a sub-analysis, the most stress exposed hospital, Bungoma West (n=211), was compared with the control hospital in Kimilili. Adjustments were made for offspring sex, gestational age and parity. The difference in mean birth weight between the most stress-exposed hospital (Bungoma West) and the control hospital (Kimilili) was 91 g after full adjustment (P=0.041). In conclusion, epidemiological data suggest a significant relationship between exposure to civil unrest and IUGR causing lower birth weight.

Abstract The following article draws on fieldwork with traditional African healers in an urban South African township and examines mediation sessions undertaken by a group of healers with a view to contemporary conflicts that emerged during their praxis. I argue that the healers’ mediation practices are a form of activism that addresses the hermeneutical and institutional gap between traditional healing and the magistrates’ court system. This activism further presents a social positioning by healers for greater legitimacy, recognition, and integration with governmental structures. The article introduces the township of Alexandra and two different conflict resolution pathways that exist there, which reflect two divergent judicial moralities of reproduction with their respective cultural frameworks. The article then provides an overview of the institution of traditional healing and, lastly, describes the healers’ mediation as a form of activism.

Abstract:

In 2017, people in Bungong Keumang village started fasting on Thursday, and they did not follow the government's decision to start fasting on Saturday. They prefer to follow the decisions of religious leaders who often overtake fasting, up to 2-3 days. This difference with the government has been going on for a long time, and almost every year has happened. This paper answers the question of why people in Bungong Keumang prefer to follow the decisions of religious leaders in starting Ramadhan fasting rather than following government decision? With in-depth interviews, answers were obtained that the choice of the community was more due to longstanding social patronage relations based on the exchange of values between religious leaders (patrons) and worshipers (clients) that are mutually beneficial to each other. The determination of 1 Ramadhan which is an area of Islamic law is an 'important arena' to strengthen patronage relations. However, at present the client's obedience to patrons is also shifting. The community is increasingly rational in making choices, access to information is also getting easier, and power relations are also decreasing, so the determination of 1 Ramadhan will become stronger into the area of astronomy and Islamic law.

Abstract:
There has been a shift toward placing an excessive amount of focus on financial, legal, and regulatory factors, as well as environmental variables, in entrepreneurship courses. The research team in this study set out to answer the question, "How does entrepreneurship training affect business performance in Bungoma County?" Because of its extreme poverty and high unemployment rate, Bungoma County was named a Millennium District in 2006. Stakeholders' attempts to boost entrepreneurs' capacity through a range of training programs have been attributed to a lack of entrepreneurial culture and entrepreneurial abilities among the indigenous people, who face the twin issues of extreme poverty and unemployment. To what extent these trainings impacted business performance was the focus of this research. This research built on Kirkpatrick's (2003) revised model for program evaluation and planning in training. The data from the study were analyzed using a correlational technique. Based on the results of the research, it is clear that the trainings did not significantly improve participants' MSE scores. There was no clear progression from micro to small to medium to large firms across the enterprise continuum, highlighting the need for enhancement to meet the specific needs of entrepreneurs and small business owners. There has to be a standardized method for the government and enterprise development agents to assess the effectiveness of training and make adjustments for the betterment of the sector.

Abstract:
In Kenya, more than 60% of the population depends directly on forests and woodlands for their energy needs, wood for furniture and construction, as well as food and other non-timber forest products such as fruits, nuts and medicinal plants among others. Even though fruits are widely planted and consumed in the daily diet of local people and also as a source of income, little attention has been given to enhancing their production and commercialization. This study examined the adopted and grown fruit tree among small holder farmers and challenges they face in undertaking this agroforestry practice. The study employed a survey research design, which entails the description, recording, analyzing and reporting of current status of on-farm fruit trees. A multistage sampling was employed for household survey selection, where 906 households were randomly sampled within Busia, Siaya and Bungoma counties. The results indicated that major fruit trees grown include Persea america and Mangifera indica in both Bungoma and Busia counties, while Citrus sinensis and Mangifera indica fruits are common in Siaya. There were significant differences (F= 4.724, d.f = 16, p=0.02<0.05) between the different numbers of preferred fruits among small scale farmers. From the study, it is evident that there is a great potential fruit production leading to improved income generation through sale in local as well as export markets, food security and improved livelihoods for communities.

Abstract:
Purpose: The broad objective of the study was to assess the utilization of preconception care services among couples (18-49 years) in Kanduyi Sub-County, Bungoma County, Kenya. Methodology: The study used a descriptive cross-sectional study design. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were employed. A pre-test study was carried out in one randomly selected ward in Webuye East sub-county. Four wards in Kanduyi Sub-County were purposively selected for the study, using the Lottery random sampling method. The study participants were sampled proportionately from each ward. Data collection instruments, used by the researcher were a semi-structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire and focused group discussions. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 22 was used for the descriptive analysis of the quantitative data. The quantitative results were presented using bar graphs, tables, and pie charts. Results: The findings from this study have; first helped to depict a low-level of knowledge on preconception care services among couples, whereby only 41% (159) of the couples had adequate knowledge on preconception care while the rest 59% (230) had inadequate knowledge. Secondly, the utilization of preconception care services among the couples in Kanduyi sub-county in Bungoma County is very low, especially on some services. For instance, the majority 65% (251) of the couples were not screened for any medical condition and a significant proportion 61% (238) were not in any family planning program prior to conception. The socio-demographic factors that were noted to influence the utilization of preconception care services among couples include; level of education (p=0.029), age (p=0.042), occupation (p=0.030), place of residence (p=0.002) and gravidity (p=0.001). In contrast, the sociocultural factors were partners' support (65%), traditional beliefs (81%), and church attendance (85%). Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The Study recommends that the ministry of health and Bungoma County government should scale up education and empowerment initiatives and programs targeting the men, with the overall aim of enhancing the utilization of preconception care services by the couples. The ministry of health should integrate the various preconception health care services in all the existing reproductive health care facilities to facilitate ease of access to health care services. The ministry of health, faith-based organizations, as well as the non-governmental organizations, should develop initiatives to empower and train the couples, especially the men, on the value of preconception care services despite the prevailing traditional and cultural beliefs

Abstract:
Despite diagnosis being an important part of clinical or medical consultations, the diagnosis might fail leading to adverse effects. This is a global problem, where developed and developing countries go through. In sub-Saharan Africa, variations between initial diagnosis and final diagnosis lead to diagnostic errors with high maternal mortalities. In Kenya, a lot of measures have been put in place but still, variation in diagnosis appear to have become rampant. Bungoma county is one of the counties with a high mortality ratio, especially for pregnant women attributed to the variation between initial and final diagnosis. Therefore, it was crucial to investigate the variation between initial and final diagnosis in relation to obstetric outcomes at hospitals in Bungoma County. The cross-sectional research design was used (Bungoma and Webuye hospitals). Systematic sampling was used to obtain 384 respondents after proportionate allocation to each hospital, and purposive sampling to select 8 health care workers as key informants. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and an interview guide. The pre-test was done with validity established through crosschecking and reliability calculated using the Cronbach method (0.89). Using a statistical package for social sciences version 25, descriptive and inferential statistics was run where chi-square and odds ratio was used to determine the influence between variables, significance and prediction. The study revealed a variation between initial diagnosis and the final diagnosis was 20.8% while diagnostic errors were significant predictors of obstetric outcomes among post-natal mothers at level five with a p-value of 0.045 at a significance of 5%(P=0.045). Demographic characteristics showed no relationship with obstetric outcomes (P=0.54>0.05). Matched diagnostic had no variations (N=327, M=1.00, SD=0.000); while unmatched diagnostic had variations (N=327, M=1.82, SD=.384). There was a relationship between diagnostic errors and obstetric outcome (ꭓ2 (1) = 251.86, p< .001). An association between diagnostic error with unsafe obstetric outcomes was significant at the odds ratio of 2.03(OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.31–2.16). The study demonstrates that a correct diagnosis is a viable strategy in preventing unsafe obstetric outcomes and by extension minimizing morbidity and mortality among pregnant women. The study concluded that there was a variation between initial diagnosis and final diagnosis which had an adverse obstetric outcome. it was recommended to build capacities for the health workers in order to address increased diagnostic errors.

Abstract:
Purpose: The adoption of One Acre Fund (OAF) agricultural practices has helped small-scale land holders to address food insecurity in Kenya. Efforts have been made by both the central and county governments to address food insecurity through low levels of technological acquisition to small-farm holdings. This study is prompted by declining production especially in stable foods in Bungoma South Sub-County. The paper examines challenges and strategies of adoption of One Acre Fund (OAF) agriculture innovation program adoption among smallholder maize farmers, Bungoma County. Specifically, the paper examines challenges and strategies of improving One Acre Fund agricultural innovation program in Bungoma South Sub-County. Methodology: The paper employed descriptive survey design to accommodate qualitative and qualitative data-. Data collection was done using questionnaires, interview schedules, focus group discussions, and direct observation of 204 OAF households. The secondary data was collected from published materials. Data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics while quantitative data was filtered, coded, and analyzed using the Social Sciences Statistical Package (SPSS). The regression analysis was used to determine the correlation between dependent and independent variables. Quantitative data was analyzed using chi-square and pairwise ranking. Findings: Various challenges affecting the adoption of OAF program were identified such as small farm size, infertile and leached soil, climate variability, high cost of inputs and high interest on repaying of loans. Pairwise ranking was run to determine strategies for enhanced adoption. Reduced loan repayment interest, crop insurance, reduced cost of farm inputs, awareness on existing OAF innovations and increased use of fertilizers were identified as strategies for enhancing adoption. Pearson moments correlation results showed a positive relationship between OAF income generation and income improvement with correlation coefficient of rs = 0.5. Conclusion: The study concludes that adoption of OAF innovation is low among smallholder farmers. This is because of the high cost of repayment of loans on inputs. The main strategy to enhance increased adoption was reduction of loan repayment interest. Recommendation: The study recommends the need to increase the participation of youths in the OAF Programs through mentorship and education. OAF management should scale up its program to accommodate even farmers with large farms. It should also introduce a program that tailors towards crop diversification to offer a variety to farmers to make choices on which crops to adopt.
