Full textIn this research, a contrastive linguistic analysis of German and Brazilian package inserts was developed. The main aim of this analysis was to identify the degree of comprehensibility in each text, according to the Karlsruhe model dimensions: concision, correctness, motivation, structure, simplicity and perceptibility. To achieve this aim, it was necessary to review some concepts of the Textual Linguistics and procedures of the Contrastive Textology, such as the definitions of text and textual genre, the method of comparing parallel texts and the establishment of a point of comparison. In general, the results of the contrastive analysis have shown that technical terms (in the scope of simplicity) and small font (perceptibility) are not the main causes of misunderstanding of package inserts, as it was supposed initially. The study has highlighted that deviances in the structure and in the concision of package inserts may have an impact in the comprehension of these texts as negative as the aspects forementioned, if not more. Moreover, it was possible to notice that each dimension has a different weight in the comprehensibility of the analyzed package inserts because of the linguistic and cultural differences between German/Portuguese and Germany/Brazil.

This is a cross-sectional study whose objectives are to investigate the occurrence of possible eating disorders, anorexia and/or bulimia in adolescents of both sexes, and to identify the epidemiologic profile of both. To identify eating disorders, 500 adolescents from a private school in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, completed self-report questionnaires, the BITE (Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh) and the EAT-26 (Eating Attitudes Test summarized). The findings indicate that 70 (14%) adolescents possibly present with diagnoses of anorexia, 4 (0,8%) of bulimia, and 11(2,2%) with anorexia and bulimia combined. It was observed that 78 (15,6%) adolescents presented with non-usual eating habits, placing them at risk for the development of eating disorders. This investigation shows that there is a high occurrence of possible eating disorders in the sample studied and a heterogeneous epidemiologic profile, occurring in both sexes and within diverse ethnic groups and social-economic classes. The dissatisfaction with their own bodies and the wish to modify them are feelings present in adolescents who probably exhibit eating disorders (p<0.001).

Full textBased on the problematization of the concept of eating disorders, this paper aims on the investigation of our relation with the body, discussing the normative practices that constitute our ways of life. From an esthetic standard that relates the body with the beauty and success, we intend to problematize the social context where the eating disorders have been produced. To achieve this objective, we base our study on the anorexia and bulimia analysis. The symptoms of this psychopathology of difficult treatment reflect an excessive worry about the weight, corporal image and of getting fatter. Our interest is to contribute to this discussion, leaving from an individual perspective focused on the anorectic and/or bulimic young and the dysfunctional interactions of his/her familiar system, shifting the focus to the eating disorders as a device that denunciates the extremism in the way of thinking, feeling and experiencing the body in our society. Therefore, our objective is to present some subsidies that allow us to dislocate this matter from the exclusive scope of individual experience to an analysis of the social practices of the relation with the body that resides the contemporary experience, considering the eating disorders in the present as the exacerbation of a social symptom.

This is an ethnographic approach to the recent process by which musicians in Bogotá are appropriating bullerengue, a musical genre commonly referred to as "afro traditional music", an aspect that was reason enough for it to be rejected until recently. The present work, which is part of an Anthropology of music, based on the idea that musical processes offer information about other phenomena of society, exposes how such an appropriation process is mediated by what they refer to as a "search for roots", by male - female tensions and by the search of its therapeutic effects.

Full textThe core defining features of bulimia nervosa (BN) are repeated binge eating episodes and compensatory purging behavior. The biobehavioral aspects of binge eating are complex and not fully understood. One area of recent interest is the role of the satiety-signaling peptide cholecystokinin (CCK). Previous research observed a blunted postprandial plasma CCK response in those with BN, therefore suggesting this may be a cause, consequence, or maintenance factor in binge eating. It is unknown whether this altered response is due to a state versus trait phenomenon, thus having implications in the development of clinical treatment strategies. To examine the nature of this altered response, this study assessed whether CCK normalizes following remission from BN (RBN). This biobehavioral study utilized a comparative design to prospectively evaluate the biological CCK response and the corresponding behavioral ratings of satiety and other eating-related sensations in individuals with BN (n=10), RBN (n =14), and healthy controls (CON, n=13). CCK and behavioral ratings were assessed at baseline, +15, +30, and +60 minutes following the ingestion of a standardized liquid test meal. The BN group's CCK response was blunted and approached significance (p =.052) when compared to the RBN and CON groups. As predicted the RBN and CON groups' CCK response did not significantly differ. This finding supports the premise that CCK may normalize following abstinence from binge and purge (vomit) episodes and that this is a state versus trait related phenomenon. A significant positive relationship between CCK response and ratings of satiety occurred in the RBN group only (r=.59, p<.05). A new and unanticipated finding in the BN group was a significant relationship (r=.86, p < .01, two-tailed) between their CCK response and urge to vomit. A greater urge to vomit was reported by those individuals who had increased CCK response. Therefore, it is unknown whether the normalization of CCK functioning is a protective or liability factor in the stabilization and recovery process. Replication studies utilizing a larger sample size are needed to understand the role of CCK in recovery and the subsequent development of novel treatment strategies for those suffering with BN

Full textThe aim of the following study was to examine why some individuals who have been affected by eating disorders choose to write blogs and how they feel about this experience. The group of respondents consisted of five women aged 23-35, who currently write blogs about their eating disorders. A qualitative method was utilized by means of semi-structured interviews conducted over the telephone and then analyzed using sense of coherence and coping theory. The results showed that the main reasons to start a blog were seeing it as an outlet to vent emotions, a way to help others suffering from eating disorders and a means to communicate about problems without having to do so face to face. Furthermore the blog was viewed as a positive resource to deal with eating disorders and as a way of gaining social support. Blogging can thus be viewed as a coping tool and as a way to increase comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness according to the sense of coherence.

Full textEating disorders are a disease group that is becoming more common in society. One of the reasons that the disease is increasing is the unrealistic ideal that is presented in media. The media-pressure is substantial and accessible. The beauty ideal involve a dissatisfaction of a persons own body and his or hers appearance that will contribute to the drive of change. The purpose of this study is to investigate if men, as well as women, are influenced by the media-factor in the sicken of an eating disorder. Also if the sex matters and plays a certain role for those who suffer. Only 10 percent of those who are suffering from an eating disorder and that seeks help are men. Can the ideal have an direct affect that less men suffer from this disease? Or can the different expectations of the sexes and of the disease implicate that men don´t realize that they are sick, or that they feel shameful to seek help because eating disorders are known to be a women’s disease? The results implicate that eating disorders is a complex disease and that the media-factor alone does not contribute to sicken or the cause of sickness.
