Leader self-development is being pushed by organizations today as a practical and cost-efficient strategy to develop leadership skills. However, the research on leader self-development is still sparse and there are questions that should be answered before much stock can be placed in self-development as a viable means to increase leadership capacity. This research attempts to address these questions in several ways. First, the first study outlines a theory and process to create a scale that measures the quality of self-development activities that leaders engage in. Furthermore, a nomological network is examined with dispositional constructs that were and were not be related to the quality of leader self-development activities. The results from these scale development efforts were generally positive with the exception of the challenge dimension of quality. Second, the second study builds on previous literature by examining the interactive effect of leader self-development quality and quantity in predicting leader effectiveness and finds that quality appears to play the more important role. Finally, the second study also addresses the lack of research examining situational factors that may affect leader self-development quality. This study found that transformational leadership was related to the quality of leader self-development activities and that quality mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and effectiveness. Overall, this research addresses several gaps in the leader self-development literature and creates a foundation for future research to build on.

Drummond-Huth, Barbara. "The Effect of Leadership Skill-Building on Nurse Leader Behaviors." UNF Digital Commons, 2009. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/311.

Full text
Abstract:
Patient outcome data are an important factor in healthcare. Reports by the Institute of Medicine between 1999 and 2001, as well as recent research by Linda Aiken and her colleagues have added more emphasis to measures that can be taken to improve patient outcomes. Because of the role they play in healthcare facilities, nurse leaders are in a position to take the lead in improving patient outcomes. There is evidence to suggest that nurse leaders' transformational leadership behaviors are associated with positive patient outcomes. The purpose of this project was to identify the effect of transformational leadership skill-building training on nurse leaders' behavior in the acute care setting. The project included assessments of nine nurse leaders by those nurses which are supervised by the nurse leaders. The results indicated the nurse leaders' behavior score of 3.1 was in the transformational range (3.0-3.75.) Transformational leadership skill-building training followed the assessment process. A post training evaluation by the previous assessors followed the training. The distribution of the transformational leadership behavior scores did not change following the training.

Singh, Ramanpreet. "Leader-Follower Model and Impact of Mobility on Consensus Building." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2017. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc984148/.

Full text
Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks are an indispensable tool in this highly connected world. WSNs have been the focus of research efforts in areas of communication, electronics and control for many years. Advancements in the fields of MEMS, RF and digital circuit technology has led to the development of low cost and extremely power efficient smart sensors. This has led to the need of a fast, reliable and inexpensive method of consensus building for these sensor networks. Basic concepts of graph theory and consensus building are explained in this thesis. This thesis reviews the models and strategies for consensus building present in the literature. The shortcomings of these models are explained through examples and a leader-follower model based consensus building strategy is presented. Algorithm to convert any graph into a bipartite graph by edge removal and a strategy to select effective leaders based on a weighted combination of node centrality, ratio of leaders to the total number of nodes and presence of leaf nodes in the group is presented in this thesis. Proposed leader-follower model is compared against classic models for consensus building are compared and proven to be better. Mobility is studied using deterministic and random mobility models to show the improvement in convergence rate of the network. It is shown that mobility can turn any disconnected network into a connected network, which is able to reach consensus.

Turner, Megan M. "Is LEED a True Leader? Studying the Effectiveness of LEED Certification in Encouraging Green Building." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2010. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/1.

Full text
Abstract:
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) is the most commonly used green building rating system in the United States, bestowing upon LEED certified buildings the prestige of being considered more sustainable than their non-certified neighbors. The public often assumes that LEED certified buildings are completely sustainable or even net-zero with regards to greenhouse gas emissions, but in actuality buildings certified under the most popular version of LEED are only required to be 15% more energy efficient than required by most state building codes – a far cry from the energy usage cuts needed to stave off global warming. By examining the history of LEED and its parent organization (the United States Green Building Council), contemporary criticisms of the certification system and its widespread adoption, and real-world performance of existing LEED buildings, this thesis seeks to uncover whether the LEED system is an effective tool in the fight against climate change and why it has yet to live up to its name.

Legood, Alison. "Trust in leader-follower relationships : how and when trust building enhances dyadic and organisational outcomes." Thesis, Aston University, 2013. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/20892/.

Full text
Abstract:
Guided by theory in both the trust and leadership domains, the overarching aim of this thesis was to answer a fundamental question. Namely, how and when does trust-building between leaders and followers enhance leader-member exchange (LMX) development and organisational trust? Although trust is considered to be at the crux of the leader-follower relationship, surprisingly little theoretical or empirical attention has been devoted to understanding the precise nature of this relationship. By integrating both a typology of trustworthy behaviour and a process model of trust development with LMX theory, study one developed and tested a new model of LMX development with leader-follower trust-building as the primary mechanism. In a three wave cross-lagged design, 294 student dyads in a business simulation completed measures of trust perceptions and LMX across the first 6 months of the LMX relationship. Trust-building was found to account for unexplained variance in the LMX construct over time, while controlling for initial relationship quality, thus confirming the critical role of the trust-building process in LMX development. The strongest evidence was found for the role of integrity-based trust-building behaviour, albeit only when such behaviour was not attributed to insincere motives. The results for ability and benevolence-based trustworthy behaviour revealed valued insights into the developmental nature of trustworthiness perceptions within LMX relationships. Thus, the pattern of results in study one provided a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the dynamic interplay between trust and LMX. In study two, leader trust-building was investigated cross-sectionally within an organisational sample of 201 employees. The central aim of this study was to investigate whether leader trust-building within leader-follower relationships could be leveraged for organisational trust. As expected, the trust-building process instigated by members in study one was replicated for leaders in study two. In addition, the results were most consistent for benevolence-based trust building, whereas both integrity- and ability-based trust-building were moderated by the position of the leader within the organisation’s hierarchy. Overall, the findings of this thesis shed considerable light on the richness of trusting perceptions in organisations, and the critical role of trust-building in LMX development and organisational trust.

Singh, Shreshini. "Leadership role in setting the pace of transformation in the telecommunications industry - boldly building the next leader or conforming to status quo." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64814.

Full text
Abstract:
The world is rapidly evolving, in a fundamental manner, moving from the Third Revolution to the Fourth Revolution, standing at the brink of a digital technological revolution in an aggressively competitive environment. Literature on leadership, barriers inhibiting change and organisational culture have been extensively researched. However, research limitations exist in the new millennium, where boundaries have blurred and theories have been intertwined. The purpose of this research study seeks to establish the role of leadership in influencing the pace of transformation at senior executive level, by either strategically driving change or conforming to status quo, in a male dominated environment. A qualitative research study was conducted based on 12 in-depth interviews with members of leadership from South African based telecommunications companies. The exploration study was to gain insights on the current state of the role of leadership in setting the pace of transformation, by understanding the priority status that it is given on the strategic agenda, where hard-coded barriers, such as stereotyping and societal gender preconceptions, continue to exist. The findings of the research study indicate that although some advancement has been made, albeit at a slow pace, the resounding lack of progressive organisational change, despite a strong business case for a diverse workforce, needs to be addressed with concerted effort. This can only be achieved, in a sustainable manner, if the benefits of transformation truly resonate with leaders, organisations and the telecommunications industry thereby enabling the overhaul of the system with the revolutionary change demanded.

Abstract:
Relationships are so entrenched in the social interaction between individuals that most people do not pay attention to them until they experience trouble in their relationship. Humans create new relationships and end old ones all the time in conscious and unconscious processes. This thesis will give a theoretical and practical overview to reveal the process of social interaction which shapes relationships between a leader and a follower. We focus on the necessary components as well as on the process in which the relationship is built. We approach the process of social interaction from both the side of the leader and the side of the follower to create a balanced picture that will provide systematic explanation of this complicated and multidimensional phenomenon. The primary focus of this thesis will be on the origin and development of an authentic, healthy relationship between a leader and a follower.

PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 2022. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/66471/.

Full text
Abstract:
Organizational leaders are essential for dealing with various workplace challenges, such as VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) circumstances, and leadership development (LD) is a common way to build-up leaders. However, leadership practitioners are sometimes strongly dissatisfied with LD programs, which has been identified as ineffective in developing leaders for challenging circumstances. Thus, this research aims to discover how to prepare leaders for challenging work environments. This inductive research investigates open-ended reflections collected from 42 Australian leaders in LD programs to achieve the objective in regard to how crucial leadership capabilities are demonstrated in dealing with challenges and how to develop them. This research includes one methodological study and two empirical inductive studies. The methodological study develops a transparent step-by-step research framework through which the two qualitative studies are conducted. This qualitative research found that leadership resilience is essential in dealing with challenges, and it can strongly motivate others to learn. By observing leadership resilience demonstrated in challenging situations, leaders can improve their capabilities of dealing with challenges (e.g., leadership self-efficacy and selfawareness). These findings enrich the theoretical understanding of social cognitive theory by integrating ‘Resilient Attitude’ and ‘Coping Skills’ dimensions into the triadic schematization and contributes to better preparing leaders for challenges from two aspects. Firstly, the vicarious learning mechanism can explain ‘How to develop leaders’. Secondly, this research provides a theoretical contribution to psychological resilience by presenting a three-dimension model (resilient attitude, resilient behaviour, and coping skills), which answers ‘What is to be developed’. This research outlines that leaders can improve their capabilities of dealing with challenging circumstances by observing others' challenges and their resilient responses. This finding provides practical contributions to leadership development programs and other human resource management, e.g., talent management. In addition, the author-designed research framework may assist other new researchers in their studies.

Submitted to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Sloan School of Management on May 7, 2004 in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degrees of Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Master of Business Administration ABSTRACT Many computer companies are seeking to grow their customization capability. As the market becomes increasingly commoditized, computer companies view customization as a way to differentiate their products and offer customer value. However, the implementation of customization programs has been difficult for many organizations. Sun Microsystems launched a customization program called Customer Ready Systems (CRS) through a grass-roots effort in manufacturing. CRS offered assemble-to-order, factory-integrated systems. Although CRS revenues had been growing, scalability was difficult and costs were increasing. CRS needed to evaluate its process and supply-chain from a strategic perspective to ensure alignment with the rest of the organization. To grow profitably, it also needed to reduce costs and increase scalability. This thesis focuses first on the question of whether or not Sun should reconfigure its supply chain to perform more, if not all, of its customization work at external manufacturers. It then turns to the question of whether or not the current internal customization process can be improved, and identifies two opportunities: pricing and process improvement in component removal for reconfiguration, and lead-time variability reduction.
(cont.) This thesis recommends organizational and tactical policies to improve the customization based on these analyses and implementation efforts. The research for this thesis was conducted during a seven month internship with Sun Microsystems' Worldwide Operations group and was affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Leaders for Manufacturing program.

Abstract:
This Joint Applied Project identifies effective interpersonal skills for four selected leadership levels in the Army civilian workforce. This project expands the findings from the 2003 Army Training and Leadership Development Panel, Communication Task Force initiative, which identified a perceived gap in interpersonal skills exhibited by Army civilian leaders. Thirty-eight (38) Army civilian managers from four leadership levels completed questionnaires, and participated in face-to-face interviews describing the important interpersonal skills that were necessary to successfully perform in their jobs. This study shows which interpersonal skills were considered most important at the different levels. This study further shows that current education is lacking for civilian leaders to develop these important skills. Recommendations for improving career development and leadership training are offered that would enable the Army to "grow" better, more effective, Army civilian leaders.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Vincent Cho
Fierce political and social pressure has intensified the demands for district leaders to narrow achievement disparities but research provides limited guidance for practice. Rorrer, Skrla, and Scheurich (2008) described a theory: district leaders should enact certain essential roles for school reform. Capacity-Building efforts of district leaders are essential to the role of Instructional Leadership. Building capacity comprises the specific actions of district leaders to improve the district’s ability to achieve complex goals. This qualitative case study explored the actions district leaders took and how they prioritized those actions to build capacity to improve student achievement. Data was collected from a single Massachusetts school district using semi-structured interviews and document reviews. This study found that leaders: established concrete learning practices (i.e. job-embedded professional development, instructional coaching model); created a supportive learning environment (i.e. establishing trust and providing time); and reinforced teacher learning (i.e. feedback and support). This study also found that leaders’ actions were driven by data. Recommendations include shifting to a data-informed decision-making process, coordination of leadership team efforts across the district and limiting initiatives to core priorities

Abstract:
Although the population of the United States is becoming increasingly diverse, data on the composition of nonprofit boards nationally indicate a persistent pattern of under-representation of minority groups. This exploratory study was conducted in a large metropolitan area with a diverse population. The research investigated board diversity with a small sample of leaders of nonprofit organizations and current or prospective board members from under-represented groups. Data were collected from nonprofit leaders by an anonymous web-based survey and from board members by telephone interview. The research found that all the nonprofit organizations in the study served client groups that were racially and ethnically diverse. The majority of survey respondents felt that having a diverse board was important, and the lack of board diversity was a source of dissatisfaction. Overall board recruitment was reported to be difficult. The most frequent sources of new board members were referrals from current board members and personal networks. Typically, the nonprofit organizations in this study did not allocate financial resources to build board diversity. Interview participants identified the value of recruitment strategies that would expand the pool of potential board members. Other recommendations included increased attention to the process of board entry for new board members. In conclusion, it appears that building more diverse boards will require sustained efforts, but that the changes necessary to successfully include people from different cultural backgrounds will also strengthen nonprofit organizations.

This thesis shows how a combination of macro-economic, business, and organizational factors can lead a well-run company to adopt a "launch-and-expedite" behavior with detrimental effects on operational efficiency. It also demonstrates how it is possible, for an organization that finds itself in such a state, to apply basic operations principles and a data driven approach to systematically get out of the "launch-and-expedite" mode. The thesis presents a method to characterize a real, functioning supply chain in the context of changing conditions and in the absence of perfect data. It shows the analysis, recommendations, and results from a particular supply chain case study at Agilent Technologies, Inc. The project first analyzes and maps the current supply chain to characterize demand and supply variability. A selected menu of operational building blocks is then recommended to improve overall supply chain performance by reducing the internal bullwhip effect and improving on-time delivery. The recommendations are implemented in a successful pilot study and key operational metrics are recorded such as supply chain inventory, on-time delivery, variability of lead-time, and number of expedite/schedule change requests.
(cont.) The particular organizational context of the project and its affect is also considered. Although this thesis provides a case study of the Colorado Springs Technical Center operations and supply chain, results and lessons learned are applicable to other component suppliers or component buyers within multi-node supply chains, particularly those in the capital equipment business.

Abstract:
MBA Professional Report
This report begins by defining collaboration. Next, the report provides examples of how effective collaboration within the Defense's (DoD) acquisition community is lacking. Based on these examples, the project asks its main research question: "How can DoD acquisition leaders improve their collaborative capacity to improve cost, schedule and performance?" Next, the project provides a model for how to do just that. The project, "An Acquisition Leader's Model for Building Collaborative Capacity" presents a three-step model. Step one is to assess and analyze collaboration capacity with regard to the elements of one's own organization, the organization's stakeholders, and the network (or the relationships between stakeholders). Next, based on the analyses from step one, step two calls for making plans to improve collaboration capacity, again, along the same elements previously analyzed: one's organization, stakeholders, and the network. Lastly, the model calls for executing the plans made in step 2. This process is repeated until the desired collaboration capacity has been reached. Last, the project provides a detailed hypothetical example of how the model can be applied.

Organizational knowledge is information about products, processes and customers that is held by the personnel in the organization. Institutionalization of the best practices contained within this knowledge is essential in creating competencies. Unfortunately, organizations do not utilize this knowledge effectively. This thesis introduces a framework that shows how establishing a prototype system to enhance product and process understanding can start to build organizational knowledge in the short-term. Along with external benchmarking, this internal knowledge can be used to form best practices based competencies. This framework will be illustrated through the use of a case study. The case study was conducted at the Delphi Automotive Systems Mexico Technical Center. The case study project was undertaken to improve the Energy and Chassis Systems division's competencies in sensor wire harness products. In order to support this competency development, the author worked with Delphi Automotive Systems personnel to develop best practices based competencies employing the competency development framework introduced in this thesis. Installation of a working prototyping system was achieved in the six-month project period. Through the production and delivery of these harnesses, internal best practices were developed. These were used along with benchmarking of other harness manufacturers to develop a baseline best practices based competencies repository for the division. Effective use of the best practices based competencies developed during the case study project should foster improvement in competitive metrics, particularly speed-to-market and product development costs. Extension of best practices based competencies development to other products will allow human and monetary capital to be released from re-engineering tasks. These resources can then be refocused on product advancement to exceed customer expectations in the automotive market. It will also allow the organization to focus resources on development of strategic nonautomotive markets in order to diversify the business to protect against future downturn in the automotive market.

Abstract:
Beginning in the mid 19th Century, intercontinental railroad service made it possible for theatrical road companies to move more freely across America and perform in the smaller community opera houses. This thesis is about one of these opera houses, the Homestake Opera House in Lead, South Dakota. This thesis chronicles the events from the conception of the opera house by Pheobe Hearst and Thomas Grier, to the construction of the structure, 1911 through 1914, and finally through some of the events that took place in the opera house from the opening in August, 1914 to late November, 1936, at which time the opera house was converted into a movie house. Focus is given to the road companies that performed in the opera house within the time period specified. Such performances are chronicled by date, company name, title and type of performance, and names of the author(s).

Abstract:

This grounded theory study sought to create a viable framework that may help school leaders accelerate the expansion of an authentic 21st century instructional model. The U.S. economy is now more dependent on knowledge work than manufacturing. Yet, many for-profit, non-profit, and public sectors perceive schools as not adequately preparing students for 21st century careers and colleges. However, customary principal-led change is challenging. Leaders face several complex organizational challenges, including a modern-day duty and role expansion that limits time, and the inherent difficulty of human-behavior and organizational change, observed in the fact that schools have deeply entrenched norms: an estimated 150 years of traditional lecture-dominant instruction.

As such, a singular research question informed this study: What leadership competencies do 21st century change-savvy school administrators perceive as critical to accelerate successful change to a 21st century instructional model? Using a purposive sampling method, change-savvy school leaders (n = 22) with lived experience were interviewed covering germane topics such as what worked for them, professional development, and change management.

Utilizing Charmaz’s (2014) constructed grounded theory coding process and data analysis technique, the results include two key findings: five leadership competencies (discerning, authentic, facilitative, collaborative, and communicative) and the Authentic 21st Century Leadership Framework, which integrates the respective competencies to provide a user guide for the contemporary time-burdened school leader. Ultimately, the study concluded the following: (a) the leadership competencies are essential; (b) the framework provides a supportive guide to accelerate expansion of the 21st century instructional model; (c) 21st century leadership is chiefly collaborative; (d) leader created and sustained growth culture is critical; and, lastly (e) as the 21st century instructional model magnifies in utilization across schools, opportunities for all students improve.

Alfaifi, Abdullah Yahya G. "Building the Arabic learner corpus and a system for Arabic error annotation." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9736/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent developments in learner corpora have highlighted the growing role they play in some linguistic and computational research areas such as language teaching and natural language processing. However, there is a lack of a well-designed Arabic learner corpus that can be used for studies in the aforementioned research areas. This thesis aims to introduce a detailed and original methodology for developing a new learner corpus. This methodology which represents the major contribution of the thesis includes a combination of resources, proposed standards and tools developed for the Arabic Learner Corpus project. The resources include the Arabic Learner Corpus, which is the largest learner corpus for Arabic based on systematic design criteria. The resources also include the Error Tagset of Arabic that was designed for annotating errors in Arabic covering 29 types of errors under five broad categories. The Guide on Design Criteria for Learner Corpus is an example of the proposed standards which was created based on a review of previous work. It focuses on 11 aspects of corpus design criteria. The tools include the Computer-aided Error Annotation Tool for Arabic that provides some functions facilitating error annotation such as the smart-selection function and the auto-tagging function. Additionally, the tools include the ALC Search Tool that is developed to enable searching the ALC and downloading the source files based on a number of determinants. The project was successfully able to recruit 992 people including language learners, data collectors, evaluators, annotators and collaborators from more than 30 educational institutions in Saudi Arabia and the UK. The data of the Arabic Learner Corpus was used in a number of projects for different purposes including error detection and correction, native language identification, Arabic analysers evaluation, applied linguistics studies and data-driven Arabic learning. The use of the ALC highlights the extent to which it is important to develop this project.

Abstract:

Women living in northern Nigeria face a herculean challenge of overcoming direct and indirect violence. These include domestic violence, political instability, social inequality, and the threat of Boko Haram. Boko Haram is an extremist militant group that has been known to kidnap, rape, and torture women and young girls as means of terrorizing the Nigerian community. Northern Nigerian women have also faced challenges within their own community as they are barred from participating in public activities, are under-represented in government, forced into early marriages, and are often victims of domestic violence. This study examines the lived experiences of women peacebuilders living in northern Nigeria as they negotiate regional conflicts and manage the peacebuilding process. Seven northern Nigerian females between the ages of 30 to 60 were recruited to participate in this study. All came from diverse backgrounds but shared a commonality of peace building and conflict management within their respective communities. The goal of this study was to better understand the meaning of these experiences and to uncover how these women handle these daily challenges. Feminist standpoint and structural violence theories provide the theoretical framework to dissect the essence of their experiences. The study adopted Clark Moustaka’s approach towards conducting transcendental phenomenological research methods and procedure. The results of the study will inform project design and policy formulation and serve as a source for future research and interventions by development agencies and other stakeholders interested in peace within the region.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 89-90).
Within the Integrated Defense Systems of The Boeing Company, aftermarket support of military aircraft serves as an increasingly large source of revenue. One of the newest contracts between Boeing and the U.S. Government created such a supply partnership at the Army Rotorcraft Repair Depot in Corpus Christi, Texas. At this depot, all Army helicopters, including Boeing's AH-64 Apache Attack helicopter and CH-47 Chinook Cargo helicopter undergo major repair and overhaul. In 2004, Boeing entered an agreement with the U.S. Government to assume responsibility of the repair depot's supply chain for aftermarket parts for Boeing rotorcraft. Over the last two years, Boeing has been creating and refining Corpus Christi's support structure to ensure that the required repair parts arrive when demanded. In establishing this new supply chain, Boeing has identified numerous inefficiencies as a result of inaccurate and highly volatile forecasts. This thesis examines the impact of volatility within the new support structure and creates flexible solutions to mitigate its negative effects on lead times, multiple sources of supply and inventory management.
(cont.) Efforts to increase communication flow across the supply chain are used to capitalize on economies of scale for cost reduction while safety stock recommendations are made for critical end-items. Monte Carlo simulations are employed to justify and validate the solutions. The results of the thesis reveal that a strategic selection of raw material safety stock can reduce procurement lead times by an average 61% for a subset of parts while maintaining financial responsibility. Additionally, by leveraging cost reduction techniques, an average increase of 11% in Boeing's income from sales can be achieved while eliminating inefficient administrative delays and increasing customer fulfillment rates. These two recommendations demonstrate specific solutions for mitigating the effects of demand volatility and inaccurate forecasting.

Ningappa, Geetanjali Ningappa. "Use of lean and building information modeling (bim) in the construction process; does bim make it leaner?" Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/39594.

Full text
Abstract:
Construction productivity lags behind most industries. In general, the process of construction is carried out in several smaller processes. For the overall construction process to be successful, continuity between these smaller processes must be achieved. This has been the persistent goal of construction productivity improvement for decades now. Waste is generated between the continuing activities by the unpredicted release of work and the arrival of resources. However, in recent decades the construction industry has a great need to improve its productivity, quality and incorporate new technologies to the industry due to increased foreign competition. In the late 1980s, researchers started looking at solving this problem in a more general and structured way based on the philosophy and ideology of lean production. In lean, adopting waste identification/reduction, or meeting the client's needs with minimal resources addresses the performance improvement. With recent developments in the construction industry, introduction of building information modeling (BIM) has had a significant influence on leaner construction. They are both complementary in several important ways. Various studies conducted exhibit that BIM is very crucial in reducing the project cost, site conflicts, project duration, error reduction, better and faster design development, and so on. This brings the question; can BIM be used as a tool for leaner construction? The objective of this thesis is to determine how BIM is helping achieve a leaner construction. More and more companies are adopting BIM as an acceptable waste reduction tool. A comprehensive study of lean theory and BIM was conducted, underscoring ways for BIM to help achieve leaner construction. The research was broadly conducted in three different parts. In the first part, a synthesis is drawn from a literature study to show that BIM helps reduce waste, helps in implementing lean techniques, and achieves lean principles. The second part focuses on the data acquired from a construction company to show that BIM helps reduce project cost, duration and conflicts. The third and the last part focused on getting the perspective view of different professionals in the construction industry on BIM by conducting focus interviews. A comprehensive conclusion was derived based on the findings from the three methods adopted.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to explore how leaders and teachers of low socio-economic status (SES) Catholic secondary schools engaged with a system led reform to build capacity for leadership to improve learning in their school communities. The research was informed by the school and system improvement literature which noted the limited success of large-scale reforms in secondary schools and identified the need to understand how leaders can better build capacity for improvement. The case study focussed on the leadership of four low SES Catholic secondary schools from New South Wales (NSW), Australia who were part of the National Partnerships programme under the direction of a Diocesan school system. The research explored the experiences of system leaders, principals, curriculum coordinators, leaders of pedagogy, heads of department and teachers as they engaged with the system driven reform. The research demonstrated that leadership of learning in secondary schools should be shared with heads of department who are professionally valued, developed and positioned to work closely with classroom teachers. The study confirmed that leaders of learning who share whole school approaches to promote literacy, student centred pedagogy, use of data and the moral purpose of the reform initiative improve student outcomes. In this study a broadly distributed model of leadership characterised by relational trust and teamwork built both a learning culture and the capacity to improve student outcomes. It also found that system reform was more likely to succeed when it was adapted by school leaders to meet their local context. This research is significant in this field because it provides a practical understanding of how leadership should be distributed to build capacity and improve student outcomes, as well as contributing towards better understanding of the importance of middle leadership of heads of departments and instructional coaches in reforming and improving learning outcomes in secondary schools.

In this study, the researcher explored the effects of a formal education and leadership development program (LDP), Command Team Spouse Development Program–Brigade Level (CTSDP-BDE), given to spouses of senior military service members (command team spouses) in preparation for brigade-level command team roles and environments. This study employed a nonexperimental, embedded, concurrent, mixed-methods approach to answer the overarching research question: “Can formal educational programs influence life effectiveness for adult participants, assuming informal leadership roles?” Findings from quantitative data indicated that the CTSDP-BDE course influences life effectiveness in participant personal and social abilities and beliefs and organizational skills as defined by scales in the Review of Personal Effectiveness and Locus of Control (ROPELOC) instrument for command team spouses who assume informal leadership roles. No change occurred for Active Involvement or participants’ measures of locus of control (internal and external) because of attending the program. Findings from qualitative data supported quantitative findings, and raise and provide deeper insight into the CTSDP-BDE and spousal education within the United States Army (U.S. Army). Additionally, the researcher demonstrated that formal educational programs could positively influence the informal leadership capabilities of adults. In this study, the researcher used research participants from the CTSDP-BDE, who were housed at the U.S. Army’s School for Command Preparation located in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Command team spouse participants (n=40) completed both presurveys and postsurveys over the course of a 7-month data collection period. Likewise, the researcher conducted follow-up, qualitative interviews (n=10) to further investigate the effects of the CTSDP-BDE program.

Abstract:
Assessing the causes of SMME learner drop-out and attrition in the national rollout of the Productive Capacity Building Programme (PCBP): A Case StudyThe aim of this evaluative research study is to investigate the causes of learner dropout and attrition within the national rollout of the Productive Capacity Building Programme PCBP of the National Productivity Institute (NPI). This study is undertaken using a case study format with particular interest in the behaviour of adult learners within the context of a learning environment as well as particular interventional measures that could be undertaken by adult educators and facilitators in retaining adult learners within contact training programmes. The research study not only has internal validity in terms of the PCBP training programme operations but also contextual importance for long distance education, e-learning, other modes of learning delivery as well as the larger human resources development (HRD) domain. The ultimate objective is to minimize PCBP training costs resulting from adult learner attrition and the failure to meet training targets. A survey population comprising sixty (x60) small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) learners who attended PCBP training is selected using simple random sampling. The study is undertaken using case study format from a learning practitioner’s perspective. Utilizing a questionnaire instrument and interview method, the survey population is interviewed through a qualitative research method. Historical training statistics as well as post-implementation training statistics resulting from the application of recommendations are stratified and compared. Qualitative data collection methods such as observation, interview and documents are utilized. The study ends with recommendations for business application and the practical effects brought about by the implementation of initial recommendations. An analysis of recommendations indicates that adult learner dropout within the PCBP training programme is minimized through the introduction of adult learning principles within the delivery of the programme.

Nichols, Windy. "Building Leadership Capacity for Instructional Improvement with Elementary School Formal Teacher Leaders; Closing the Knowing and Doing Gap." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3614473.

Abstract:

As a result of increased principal responsibilities in terms of complexity, accountability, and demands for improved student achievement, sources have concluded that in order for school districts to undertake transformations that improve teaching and learning, schools must be aligned to best practices, and have a functioning professional learning community and shared leadership (Copeland, 2003; Dufour, 1997; Elmore, 2004; Gronn, 2008; Lambert 2002; Murphy, Smylie, Mayrowetz, & Louis, 2009). Most elementary schools have only one principal; therefore, the impact on teaching and learning led by one person may not result in organizational reform even if that individual is an instructional leader, due to the multitude of responsibilities carried by that individual as a result of the influence of other leaders (formal and informal) within the organization (Lambert, 2002; Shivers-Blackwell, 2006; Spillane 2005, 2006, and 2010). Districts take a variety of approaches to address this challenge, ranging from efforts to improve the content knowledge of their leaders to setting up formal structures to distribute instructional leadership in the form of formal teacher leaders (Timperley, 2005; Sherer, 2008).

This study determined, through analyzing decision-making styles of lead teachers and their perception of their principals, principals were more participatory and less laissez-faire than lead teachers. In addition, lead teachers utilize many leadership practices; however, they do not utilize them equally or consistently. The theory of distributed leadership and literature reviewed conclude that when leadership is distributed, schools have the ability to build capacity and grow initiatives around instructional improvement. Distributed leadership implies interdependency of leaders sharing responsibility with followers (Harris, 2003). This study has provided additional information for future researchers to use as the academic community continues to define the behaviors and practices that support a distributed leadership model. Recent studies express the way leadership is distributed in schools, suggesting the question is not if teachers lead along with the principal and district officials, but how (Katzenmeyer & Moller, 2001; Margolis, 2008).

Abstract:
The leadership challenge addressed in this study focused on the policies and practice currently used in making college admission selections for graduate students and the criterion used to make these decisions using narrative and standardized application data. The research question analyzed this occurrence by searching for the best predictors of academic success that emerged from a group of women applicants in a Master of Arts in Psychology program taken from a private, adult-oriented University in Southern California. The research study randomly selected 50 graduate applications and applied grounded theory methodology to identify standardized and narrative trends to predict academic success. Using a framework provided by a 1989 GRE Board Research Report published by the Educational Testing Service, exploratory characteristics were applied to the applications. A comparison of the resulting themes to the candidates' progression in the graduate program occurred at the point of the first significant benchmark in the program, which was the advancement to candidacy. Throughout the study, the evolving data was applied to current leadership theory and policy reform concepts in higher education. This study revealed that the standardized and narrative application information provided limited corroboration of the ETS characteristics. Themes emerged, but due to the narrative prompt, little specificity occurred. In looking at predictors of academic success in graduate study in psychology, the following general clusters of themes emerged from the study: knowledge building predictors, diversity and cross-cultural predictors, learning opportunities predictors, and career planning and development predictors. If admission reform becomes an institutional value, graduate colleges will be confronted with four significant tasks: first to identify institutional objectives and predictors to be reflected in the application; second, to analyze the predictors in terms of the knowledge building skills which prospective students should possess; third, to select or develop simulations appropriate for the study of each applicant; and fourth, to encourage women for whom there is institutional fit and a reasonable probability of academic success to pursue graduate work.

Abstract:

Native American women's leadership, information communication technologies (ICTs), work-life balance (WLB) and human capacity building (HCB) are grounded in social justice issues due to their long history of overall cultural decimation, inequitable access to technology, monetary resources, and social power (agency), and influence. Currently, there is a lack of research regarding Native American women leaders' use of ICTs for WLB and HCB. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study is to explore ways in which ICTs can enrich Native American women's leadership aptitude, work-life balance, and overall capabilities. Grounded in Giele's (2008) life course research and President Obama's (U.S. White House, 2011) recently signed, "The Executive Order (13592) on Improving American Indian and Alaska Native Educational Opportunities and Strengthening Tribal Colleges and Universities". This order reasserts his cradle to career (Galbraith, 2012) commitment to all Native Americans and Alaskan Indians, this study seeks to answer the following research questions: How are Native American women leaders utilizing ICTs for WLB and capacity building. To answer these questions, narrative life-story framework (Giele 2008; Weber, 2010) based interviews were be conducted and coded for the following themes: Identity, adaptive style, and ICT use. The researcher's intent is to help bridge the existing literature gap and potentially inform culturally ICT use for Native American and global Indigenous women's WLB and capacity-building to empower their efforts for preserving and revitalizing their culture.

Abstract:
The introduction of the Principal Quality Practice Guideline (PQPG) in 2007 by Alberta Education brought forth the question of whether or not school based leaders in Alberta School Division #1 (ASD#1) felt confident to meet the demands as presented by the dimension in the PQPG. Once confidence levels were determined I was also interested in determining how to most effectively build the professional capacity of these leaders as informed by the PQPG. Researched-based key characteristics of highly effective school leadership program design and delivery were examined and compared to perceived priorities of ASD#1 school based leaders. A literature review was completed to determine the key characteristics of effective school leadership development program design and delivery. These program elements were then offered to ASD#1 school based leaders to prioritize and evaluate. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. A quantitative survey was developed and distributed to 57 ASD#1 principals and vice principals which was then supported by a qualitative interview conducted with eight ASD#1 school based leaders. ASD#1 school based leaders indicated they were highly confident in meeting the demands of the PQPG. The study highlighted the strong support ASD#1 school based leaders have for the key characteristics of leadership program design elements for building capacity. These effective elements included: researched-based curriculum, coherence between curriculum goals and shared values and beliefs, field-based internships supported by expert practitioners, extensive use of problem-based learning strategies, use of collaboration in practice-oriented situations, use of mentoring and coaching, a strong partnerships between school districts and post-secondary institutions, vigorous recruitment of highly qualified candidates and v instructors, and a adoption and promotion of the philosophy of career long learning . ASD#1 school based leaders also strongly supported the research in their perception that the most effective method of delivering this program would be a balance of the practical and the theoretical through a partnership between the local school division and a postsecondary institution. A major outcome of this study was a recommendation for adoption of these key characteristics of effective school leadership program design and delivery to the ASD#1 school board and senior administration through the development of a school based leadership development program.

Abstract:

This study was focused on the perceptions of teachers and administrators from southwest Missouri high schools regarding the impact of Active Shooter Intruder Response Training (ASIRT). Perceptions of school safety, school climate, and preparedness for an active shooter were collected through focus group interviews. Participants for this study included four teachers and four principals randomly selected from a stratified cross-section of southwest Missouri high schools, based on enrollment. Also interviewed was Senator Dan Brown, primary sponsor of Missouri Senate Bill 75 (2013). Missouri Senate Bill 75 was signed into law by the Governor of Missouri in 2013 and mandates intruder training for Missouri school districts. The findings of this study were that teachers and administrators reported greater feelings of safety, climate, and preparedness for an intruder after participating in ASIRT. According to Senator Brown, the bill was originally authored to allow each school district the opportunity to determine how to best train staff for the event of an active shooter. Findings revealed that ASIRT was designed primarily to better provide safe learning environments for students and school staff, allowing higher levels of teaching and learning. Maslow’s (1954) theory of motivation–hierarchy of needs was the theoretical framework of this study, which states all humans must have the basic need of safety met before further development can take place. This theory paralleled the literature reviewed for this study, which indicated students perform at higher levels when they have a greater sense of safety.
