Advances in the material sciences continue to provide designers with a wealth of new materials that challenge preconceived notions of the building envelope and its performance. These new technologies can be used to create new adaptable building skins and allow for an active interaction with the environment to reduce energy consumption in buildings. This thesis investigates the function of the building enclosure in relation to these new material developments and recent changes in the treatment of the building envelope. New glazing, insulation and thermal storage technologies are discussed in the context of their technical trajectories. Based on th is discussion of functions and technologies, a specific set of materials is selected and their combination into a facade panel is proposed. Th is new element is a layered facade component including electrochromic glazing, aerogel and a phase change material. The combination is analyzed for its potential as a translucent thermal storage wall in the context of American residential construction. Aspects of performance, integration and design are explored through calculations, experimental testing and the creation of scaled models and a prototype element. For this purpose an environmental test chamber has been built on MIT's campus to evaluate the performance of new facade elements. The result of this study shows the potential for such innovative facade concepts and points towards areas of future research to make such concepts technically and economically feasible. In particular, the need for better tools to evaluate the performance of such advanced skins is identified in order to achieve successful implementation of these new technologies and ideas.

Abstract:
Buildings account for approximately 40% of the energy demand and 33% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. Accordingly, there are several efforts that target energy efficiency in buildings both at the European and Swedish levels. The role of buildings in climate change mitigation, however, is not limited to energy savings. Buildings are expected to become key elements of the future smart energy systems by supplying and using energy in a more flexible way. Reducing the energy demand in buildings effectively and shifting the role of buildings in energy systems from ‘passive’ consumers to ‘active’ prosumers, however, require close interaction and cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors. Based on the data collected from interviews and a web survey, this doctoral thesis investigates the relationship between the energy and buildings sectors in Sweden at the inter-company level, presents key stakeholder views on smart energy features in buildings and investigates the opportunities and barriers for their adoption in Sweden and Hong Kong. The results of this thesis suggest a potential for improving the cooperation between the Swedish energy and buildings sectors, which was identified to be influenced by the following factors: district heating monopolies; energy efficiency efforts in the buildings sector; unsuccessful technology-neutrality of the building regulations; self-generation systems in buildings; and energy use patterns. Shifting the focus from self-gains to mutual gains appears crucial to strengthen the inter-sectoral cooperation, as there are several opportunities for achieving mutually beneficial solutions for the two sectors. This would, however, require significant changes in current practices and business models as well as the introduction of new technologies, which would allow for a more flexible energy supply and use. Accordingly, technologies that target flexible energy use in buildings are considered the most important smart energy features in buildings. The current high costs of technologies, such as home automation and smart electrical appliances, however, create the strongest barrier to adoption. Therefore, the introduction of new business and ownership models and the elimination of the institutional and regulatory barriers are crucial to achieve a wide-scale development of smart energy features in buildings. The results from Hong Kong suggest that institutional and regulatory barriers can particularly create strong hinders to the adoption of technologies. It is possible to achieve more sustainable energy systems, where buildings are active elements of networks that supply and use energy in a more flexible and ‘smarter’ way. Cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors can play a key role in the adoption of smart energy features in buildings and pave the way for the smart built environment of the future.

Abstract:
Structural steel is one of the main building materials used commercial. Its strength is its formality and high yield strength which allows less material overall. Steel is often divided into steel grades such as S275, S355, S420 and so forth. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the strength and weaknesses of the different steel grades and how the area gets effected by higher steel grades. This is done by looking at a real life project where only S355 is used and optimizing for S355, S420 and S460. This is done to shred some light on how much of an improvement the upgrade of steel grade may allow. For each steel grade an optimized cross section is created with the goal of having the lowest area possible. The difference in area for the optimized beams will act as the benchmarking for projected reductions. This optimization is done with the help of Python and follows Eurocode. When looking at the case study, the projected weight reduction is 4,2% for S420 and 7,2% for S460 compared to S355. This reduction is higher on some beams and lower on others. The main driving force for the higher reduced beams is the possibility to utilize more than one type of load condition, example both momentand shear force. Out of the 12 beams, beam 10 have the highest reduction between S355 and S420 which land around 10%. Between S355 and S460 Beam 12 comesin at a area reduction of 14%. As the higher steel grades have a higher equivalent CO2 emission the reduction of equivalent CO2 is lower than the area reduction. The projected reduction of equivalent CO2 for a switch from S355 to S420 is 3,3% and the reduction between S355 and S460 are 5,0%

Coyle, Neil Robert. "Development of fully composite steel-concrete-steel beam elements." Thesis, University of Dundee, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.270046.

Full text
Abstract:
Steel-Concrete-Steel (SCS) composite construction consists of two relatively thin steel plates with the space between filled with concrete. Various forms of this construction exist, using overlapping shear studs and single bar connectors to provide shear reinforcement to the concrete and provide a shear transfer at the interface. The problem with current systems that rely purely upon shear studs or bar connectors is that they are prone to slip between the steel faceplates and concrete core. This slip leads to a loss of composite action causing a loss of stiffness and a reduced fatigue life. An extensive experimental programme consisting of 32 beam specimens and 34 other small scale specimens formed the basis for the study of the behaviour of surfaced SCS specimens under a variety of load conditions. The results of this test program showed that surfaced SCS specimens behaved in a more composite manner. This increase in composite action manifested itself in a number of ways. • Reduced slip between steel plate and concrete core • Increased stiffness of specimen • More even crack distribution This extensive experimental study was backed up with an analytical study to understand and predict the behaviour of the surfaced SCS elements. This study has led to a new method of predicting the capacity of such sections, to a greater degree of accuracy than current methods allow. Further to this a FE parametric study was carried out to investigate the sensitivity of the elements to changes in the main geometrical and material variables.

The main objective of this thesis is the design, construction and characterization of a solar concentrating system formed by two cylindrical holographic lenses and a Silicon PV cell for the scope of façade building integration. The use of Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) instead of refractive or reflective elements implies advantages such as chromatic selectivity and ease of integration on a façade. On the other hand, tracking is necessary in one direction. The HOEs have been designed to couple the solar spectrum with the spectral response of the PV cell in order to provide maximal optical concentration on the target spectral range and therefore maximal electrical current. A ray-tracing algorithm based on Coupled Wave Theory has been developed to locally and globally analyze HOEs and holographic systems. Simulations have been validated with experimental results of HOEs recorded on Bayfol HX photopolymer. HOEs operating in the transition regime between the Bragg regime and Raman-Nath regime have also been studied, showing the promising advantages it offers for broadband spectrum illumination applications.

Abstract:
The lateral stiffening effects of cladding and partition walls, which are usually unaccounted for in a building structure's design, are investigated in this research project. Direct and iterative, linear elastic finite element analyses of representative modules of these components and their supporting primary structure were performed. These were used to study their general lateral load behaviour, and to establish their modes of interaction and induced forces. As a result, new and practical analogous strut models have been devised to allow their incorporation in, and the analysis of, the total building structure. The strut models permitted the effects of the non-structural elements' interaction on the static and dynamic responses of tall building structures to be studied. The ultimate objective of this work has been to contribute towards the development of new procedures of analysis and design of building structures braced by precast concrete cladding panels and non-loadbearing concrete blockwork walls.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports a study on the seismic response of two-dimensional squat elements and their effect on the behavior of building structures. Part A is devoted to the study of unreinforced masonry infills, while part B is focused on reinforced concrete sandwich walls. Part A begins with a comprehensive review of modelling techniques and code provisions for infilled frame structures. Then state-of-the practice techniques are applied for a real case to test the ability of actual modeling techniques to reproduce observed behaviors. The first developments towards a seismic-resistant masonry infill system are presented. Preliminary design recommendations for the seismic design of the seismic-resistant masonry infill are finally provided. Part B is focused on the seismic behavior of a specific reinforced concrete sandwich panel system. First, the results of in-plane psuudostatic cyclic tests are described. Refinements to the conventional modified compression field theory are introduced in order to better simulate the monotonic envelope of the cyclic response. The refinements deal with the constitutive model for the shotcrete in tension and the embedded bars. Then the hysteretic response of the panels is studied according to a continuum damage model. Damage state limits are identified. Design recommendations for the seismic design of the studied reinforced concrete sandwich walls are finally provided.

Abstract:
The structural architecture found in low-dimensional materials can lead to a number of interesting physical properties including anisotropic conductivity, magnetic frustration and non-linear optical properties. There is no standard synthesis concept described thus far to apply when searching for new low-dimensional compounds, and therefore control on the design of the new materials is of great importance. This thesis describes the synthesis, crystal structure and characterization of some new transition metal oxohalide compounds containing p-elements having a stereochemically active lone-pair. First row transition metal cations have been used in combination with SeIV, SbIII and TeIV ions as lone-pair elements and Cl- and Br- as halide ions. The lone-pairs do not participate in covalent bonding and are responsible for an asymmetric one-sided coordination. Lone-pair elements in combination with halide ions have shown to be powerful structural spacers that can confine transition metal building blocks into low-dimensional arrangements. The halide ions and lone-pairs reside in non-bonded crystal volumes where they interact through weak van der Waals forces. The transition metal atoms are most often arranged to form sheets, chains or small clusters; most commonly layered compounds are formed. To further explore the chemical system and to separate the transition metal entities even more the possibility to include tetrahedral building blocks such as phosphate-, silicate-, sulphate- and vanadate building blocks into this class of compounds has been investigated. Tetrahedral building blocks are well known for their ability of segmenting structural arrangements by corner sharing, which often leads to the formation of open framework structures. The inclusion of tetrahedral building blocks led to the discovery of interesting structural features such as complex hydrogen bonding, formation of unusual solid solutions or faulted stacking of layers.Compounds for which phase pure material could be synthesized have been characterized in terms of their magnetic properties. Most compounds were found to have antiferromagnetic spin interactions and indications of magnetic frustration could be observed in some of them.

Abstract:
Globally, cities are rapidly becoming denser, increasingly accommodating the majority of the world’s population. Australian cities have followed these global trends, with cities becoming denser to house urban population growth. These increasing urban densities have raised social and environmental concerns, heightening the need for residential dwellings to become more sustainable. In response, several rating systems have been developed to assess and encourage the adoption of sustainability principles in building design. However, to date, the majority of the growing body of green building literature has focused on the commercial market from an engineering and property economics standpoint. Limited research into the residential sector, and specifically, the end user perspective, has been undertaken. This thesis seeks to address this gap by providing an understanding of the lived experience of sustainable high-rise apartments. Three important issues are addressed in this thesis: 1) identifying consumers’ levels of knowledge and motives when purchasing into a sustainably designed residential high-rise building; 2) comparing stakeholder perspectives about which aspects of a green residential high-rise building occupants value; and 3) exploring how occupants identify with and construct meaning in relation to the sustainable design elements of a green building. In order to explore these issues, a theoretical underpinning of green building literature, consumer behaviour, and stakeholder and change theories was used in this thesis. Data were collected from 22 in-depth interviews with property industry experts and residents of two case study buildings located in Brisbane and Melbourne. A visual ethnography method utilising 10 to 12 images per building was also used in order to prompt personal narratives and allow for multiple interpretations of the participants’ social and/or cultural experiences. The study’s findings revealed a staged loss of knowledge regarding the sustainable design of an apartment building throughout the development lifecycle. The findings also showed that a poor dissemination of sustainability knowledge results in end users (e.g. occupants) having a poor understanding of the building’s sustainable design features. Subsequently, this limited understanding impacts the use of some sustainable design How Stakeholders Experience and Value the Sustainable Design Elements of a Residential High-Rise Building iii features and the on-going performance of the building. This study found that a mobile application is an ideal platform to significantly improve the occupants’ education and induction protocols to green residential buildings. This recommendation is based on the finding that occupants highly valued features that were conveniently accessible and provided them with the ability to track and compare their personal use/performance. Potential design inclusions for a mobile application and an improved educational process have been developed drawing on these findings and the role of stakeholders within green residential buildings advanced in this study. This thesis presents a framework for the property development industry to inform the end users of green residential buildings of the inclusion, performance, and fundamental benefits of a building’s sustainable design elements.

Abstract:
Purpose:The purpose of this study is to approach a solution to reduce housing shortage, by using inspiration from an industrialized building concept, which can lead to the opportunity for underprivileged people to get a livable housing. The aim is to study how knowledge from industrialized building could be used for a more efficient way of building in developing countries similar to Colombia.   Method:Utilizing literature studies for achieving abutment to published research also giving the authors an observant mind. With this knowledge, participatory observations were made as action research to explore the prevailing procedure when establishing a house. Operating analyzes, interviews were held in Leticia for understanding observed decisions. To be able to critically analyze the results from the interviews and observations, collected data were compared with knowledge based on the authors’ reference frames.   Findings:Keystones identified as the overall concept are applicable on establishments in the western world, since the concept is designed after similar conditions. Capital is required designing a building system as well as establishing a factory for prefabrication of elements, conditions limited in developing countries. Climate conditions and prevailing corruption prevents implementation of the concept. Identified weaknesses during the observations, noted repetition of unnecessary and non-value adding activities. One conclusion is not to implement the entire industrial building system, only practice the mindset. Initially keystones are implemented such as planning, exchange of information and reflection of performed projects, in order to improve upcoming projects. These keystones require no direct capital, merely a mindset that should be implemented.   Implications:The outcome of this study is to enlighten the subject, since obvious weaknesses were noticed, with capacity for development. Further research is realistic because, in a long term it will help solving the housing situation. For example, using this result as underlay for education like creating more efficient building, enlightening planning for reducing unnecessary non value-adding activities. As a conclusion of the study, identified weaknesses during the establishment affects the efficiency, creating unnecessary costs. A developing country should focus upon emphasizing reduction of costs, since their economic status is already declining.   Limitations: The observations during the case study have been concentrating on one small-scaled project in Leticia, Colombia. No further observations have been made but complements such as literature studies and interviews. Due to lack of time and language barrier, the amount of collected empirical data was too limited to provide durable conclusions for question formulations. Since only observations were performed on one establishment, a general result cannot be submitted.

Abstract:
With the growing role of cities, rapid urbanization, transformation under shifting economic, environmental, social and demographic conditions, the purpose of architecture is changing too. The legacy of the modernist decades left a broken urban fabric of isolated buildings from the urban landscapes of streets, plots, and blocks. In its aftermath, professionals sought to revive the traditional city fabric starting from the block, as the basic element. Although recent developments produce blocks, the livability of streets and other public spaces remains questionable. With a newfound focus into the block, as the fundamental structural element in planning, architectural typologies become the starting point to translate the qualities of urban life. The relationship between two scales, the urban and the architectural, will be examined in this thesis. Architectural elements and typologies have the ability to enhance public life, fostering positive social relations through meaningful design. The following research will explore architecture in Stockholm from the scale of an urban block, to the building typologies, and finally to the modest details within a single building. The fundamental idea is to extract building types and architectural elements that have an impact on the daily life of individuals in the city of Stockholm.

Abstract:
The lack of attention to quality control by house builders in the Australian State of Victoria has been a contentious issue for more than two decades. Ina an attempt to improve the quality of housing, various mechanisms such as voluntary and compulsory registration schemes have been adopted and discarded by industry-based organisations and government. While builders are encouraged to improve construction quality, little is known and published about the quality of housing produced by owner builders specifically during the seven year warranty period after construction is completed. With this in mind, this thesis presents research findings that compare the latent defects in houses built by owner builders with those of registered builders. Using inspection reports provided by Archicentre a sample of 1772 houses, of which 1002 were owner builders and 770 were registered builders
was used to determine the severity, the incidence, and location of defects within each house type. Houses less than a year old were found to contain a siginificant proportion of defects for both types of builder. In addition, it was found that HO builders had a mean of 2.74 defects per house and HR builders mean of 2.30 defects per house for the seven-year warranty period. To determine whether there was a significant difference between the quality of housing produced by HO and HR the statistical technique of Chi-squared analysis was undertaken at a 5% level of significance. The analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between the quality of housing procured by owner and registered
builders. In particular, it was found that the important category of workmanship for HO builders had significantly less defects that HR builders, which suggests that HR builders need to improve their managerial practices and the quality of on-site supervision. In essence, this thesis has provided a series of benchmark metrics for latent defects against which current and future legislative programs con be compared for new housing in the State of Victoria. It is recommended that future research focus on the methods for improving the role of the on-site supervisor as they are considered to be the important link in the quality chain.

Abstract:
Abstract: This work deals with linear bending analysis of building floor structures by the Boundary Element Method. The plate formulation based on Reissner's hypothesis, which can be used either for thin or thick plates, is extended to model building floor structures which is represented by a zoned plate, where each sub-region defines a slab or a beam. The beams are modelled as narrow sub-regions with larger thickness. The integral equations are derived by applying the weighted residual method to each subregion and summing them to obtain the equation for the whole body. Initially the values are defined on the interfaces and external boundary. Then, in order to reduce further the degrees of freedom, the interfaces values are translated to the the beam axis. The accuracy of the proposed model is confirmed by several numerical examples whose results are compared with the analytical solution if it exists or with a wellknown finite element code.

Guerrero, Lázaro Miguel Ángel. "Modelling building construction speed by using linear regression analysis, artificial neural networks and n-dimensional finite elements." Doctoral thesis, Universidad de Alicante, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10045/66350.

Abstract:
The estimation of the time required to construct building projects has been a topic of great interest to many researchers and practitioners. Delays are a common problem in the construction industry and may be motivated by different factors. In this context, prediction of the construction time of building projects at early project phases has been considered a key element for project success. Initially, the construction time of a building is affected by several factors related to project features, although some factors are more crucial than others. Based on these factors, for the purpose of providing proper tools to estimate construction time and minimise the subjectivity in such estimation, to date, most research works have presented parametric models which were built using linear regression analysis (LRA). Nevertheless, there is an increasing trend for using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to develop better predictive models. In order to produce the best possible predictive models and provide a clearer explanation regarding the relationships that exist between different project scope factors and the construction time of new builds, the research work presented in this thesis used two data sets and three different modelling techniques: LRA, ANNs and a new numerical methodology based on the finite element method (FEM). In particular, this thesis addressed the general assumption that nonlinear modelling techniques are likely to better represent the previously mentioned relationships than LRA. According to available data, predictor variables related to construction costs, gross floor area (GFA), number of floors, and the type of facility were selected to analyse their influence on the duration of the construction process. Additionally, and since that there is no general agreement in the literature regarding which is the most appropriate dependent variable for predicting construction time, both time and speed of construction were analysed to determine which of these offer better predictive models. In this regard, construction speed can be used as a useful and robust benchmark for comparison of contractor performance. In the case of ANNs, two different types of network architectures were tested: the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and the radial basis function (RFB). The modelling process of MLP networks was divided into five stages: (i) selection of the training methodology, (ii) data division, (iii) design of the initial network structure, (iv) network optimisation, and (v) validation of the optimised models. MLP networks were used in conjunction with two different training algorithms and five options for calibration data division. In addition, a methodology was defined to obtain optimised MLP networks with an adequate predictive performance. This methodology develops a stepwise trial and error procedure in which a basic MLP network structure, with enough consistency, is first established and subsequently this initial structure is modified at each step of the proposed optimisation process in order to achieve the best possible network configuration. This thesis also proposes a framework to evaluate the performance of predictive models which includes five different assessment criteria: (i) verification of compliance with the underlying assumptions regarding the statistical procedure used to obtain the models, (ii) checking the goodness of fit of the models to the data set used for generating them, (iii) validation of models in terms of ability to generalise, (iv) assessment of the balance existing between the ability of a model to generalise and the accuracy obtained with the calibration data, and (v) development of a sensitivity analysis to verify model stability. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was also proposed to evaluate the impact of the construction cost variability, caused by the uncertainty in its estimation, on the performance of predictive models. The results obtained with this thesis showed that construction speed is a more appropriate dependent variable than construction time to develop predictive models to estimate the construction process duration of building projects, and that such construction speed is affected more by GFA than by construction cost. Furthermore, the FEM-based numerical methodology provided better predictive models than those generated by MLP networks and LRA. In this regard, the findings of this research work support the idea that linear regression models can provide a good starting point from which to search for better predictive models using nonlinear modelling techniques. The knowledge gained from this thesis will allow for new approaches to be explored in order to better determine the relationships existing between project scope factors and the construction speed of new builds, but always taking into account that the results provided by the models proposed herein are only initial construction speed estimates at early stages of project development, when only basic information is available, and are not intended to replace detailed schedules undertaken by builders.

Abstract:
A safe school is defined as a physically and emotionally safe environment where faculty and staff, members of the community, and students perceive that they are safe. School safety is an important topic for both school administrators and architects who design schools. Previous research into the physical environment of a school has explored its impact on student achievement and, to a lesser extent, school climate and school safety. Overall, research into the relationship between a physical environment of a school and its influence on the perception of safety is inadequate. The study sought to determine what were the design elements that principals and architects believed promoted a safe elementary school. The main research question for the study was, "What are the design elements that principals and architects believe influence a safe elementary school?" The study replicated the methodology of Walton's study (2011) called Physical Design for Safe Schools. Walton focused on perceptions of high school principals and architects who were involved in designing and building schools. Walton's study concluded that safety was an important issue to principals and architects. Specifically, each group identified supervision, technology and cameras, and controlling access to school buildings as important to school safety. The groups also identified restrooms and locker rooms as the two most problematic areas of a school building due to inability to supervise. Data for the study were gathered through qualitative methods and utilized a phenomenological approach to exploring data. Principals from elementary schools built before 1999, principals from elementary schools built since 2011, and architects with experience designing elementary schools were included as participants in the study. Participants were asked five to nine semi-structured and open-ended questions relevant to the design elements and physical features associated with school buildings. Results of the study found that the physical design of a school building was viewed as having an influence on safety in schools. The two common themes from all three groups were access control and visibility. Sub-themes were the importance of preparation for emergencies, perceptions of inequality in funding for school safety measures, the prevalence of technology that has created greater opportunities to keep schools safe, and the need for balance between safety and aesthetics when designing schools.

Abstract:
With a nation-wide aim toward reducing operational energy costs in buildings, it is important to understand the dynamics of controlled heating, cooling, and air circulation of an individual room, the "One-Room Model Problem." By understanding how one most efficiently regulates a room's climate, one can use this knowledge to help develop overall best-practice power reduction strategies. A key toward effectively analyzing the "One-Room Model Problem" is to understand the capabilities and limitations of existing commercial tools designed for similar problems. In this thesis we develop methodology to link commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software COMSOL with standard computational mathematics software MATLAB, and design controllers that apply inlet airflow and heating or cooling to a room and investigate their effects. First, an appropriate continuum model, the Boussinesq System, is described within the framework of this problem. Next, abstract and weak formulations of the problem are described and tied to a Finite Element Method (FEM) approximation as implemented in the interface between COMSOL and MATLAB. A methodology is developed to design Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controllers and associated functional gains in MATLAB which can be implemented in COMSOL. These "closed-loop" methods are then tested numerically in COMSOL and compared against "open-loop" and average state closed-loop controllers.

Important thermal insulation levels can prevent the building to cool down during the cooling period, when the external conditions are favorable. In this thesis, the concept of switchable insulation is developed: during the cooling period, the insulation can be deactivated during the night to let the heat flow out. During the heating period, the switchable insulation can be deactivated whenever solar gains can be used. In this thesis the potential of switchable insulation for an European continental climate and for office buildings is investigated. Also, two new concepts of switchable insulation are introduced, developed and characterized experimentally. A detailed thermal model has been introduced, validated and used for a parametric analysis. The potential of switchable insulation is investigated on a building level, showing that important reductions of the heating and cooling load as well as summer discomfort hours can be achieved. Several control strategies have been developed, introduced and compared. The influence of thermal mass was also investigated, as well as the influence of the orientation or the elements’ frame

Abstract:
In this thesis we present theoretical and numerical results for a feedback control problem defined by a thermal fluid. The problem is motivated by recent interest in designing and controlling energy efficient building systems. In particular, we show that it is possible to locally exponentially stabilize the nonlinear Boussinesq Equations by applying Neumann/Robin type boundary control on a bounded and connected domain. The feedback controller is obtained by solving a Linear Quadratic Regulator problem for the linearized Boussinesq equations. Applying classical results for semilinear equations where the linear term generates an analytic semigroup, we establish that this Riccati-based optimal boundary feedback control provides a local stabilizing controller for the full nonlinear Boussinesq equations. In addition, we present a finite element Galerkin approximation. Finally, we provide numerical results based on standard Taylor-Hood elements to illustrate the theory.

This work deals with linear bending analysis of building floor structures by the Boundary Element Method. The plate formulation based on Reissner’s hypothesis, which can be used either for thin or thick plates, is extended to model building floor structures which is represented by a zoned plate, where each sub-region defines a slab or a beam.

Abstract:
This thesis work is part of an on-going project regarding load-bearing timber glass composites within the EU program WoodWisdom-Net. One major scope of that project is the adhesive material between the glass and timber parts. The underlying importance of the bonding material is related to the transfer of stress between the two materials – the influence of the adhesive stiffness and ductility on the possibility of obtaining uniform stress distributions. In this study the mechanical properties of two different adhesives are investigated, an epoxy (3M DP490) and an acrylate (SikaFast 5215). The differences of the adhesives lay in dissimilar stiffness, strength and viscous behaviour. In long term load caring design is important to understand the materials behavior under a constant load and a permanent displacement within the structure can cause major consequences. Therefore the main aim in this project is to identify the adhesives strength, deformation capacity and possible viscous (time dependent) effects. Because of the limitation of equipment and time this study is restricted to only three different experiments. Three different types of tensile tests have been conducted: monotonic, cyclic relaxation tests. The results of the experiments show that 3M DP490 has a higher strength and a smaller deformation capacity as compared to the SikaFast 5215. Thus, the SikaFast 5215 is more ductile. The 3M DP490 exhibits a lower loss of strength under constant strain (at relaxation). SikaFast 5215 showed also a large dependency of strain level on the stress loss in relaxation.

Abstract:
Our understanding of the development of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in response to sediment inputs over the past 30 ka is limited. Geochemical proxies including rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) along with element ratios (Pr/Yb, Y/Ho, Mn/Ca, Nd/Yb and Ce anomalies) are known to be closely related to sediment and nutrient input. This research conducts novel geochemical analysis on almost 200 fossil reef building samples that formed since the Late Pleistocene, the last 30 ka. The first part of this research focuses on improving the methodology for ICP-MS analysis. Then a series of experiments are conducted to evaluate factors that may bias REY results, including the inter-taxa differences of genera within a specific family, sampling position and potential influence meteoric diagenesis effects. The results indicate the REY are not affected by these factors, which greatly expands the range of samples available for the reconstruction of palaeo-water quality. Both coral and microbialite samples from the GBR since 30 ka show typical geochemical features of well-oxygenated, shallow ambient seawater. However, both spatial and temporal differences exist in these geochemical signals. The northern-central GBR samples record higher values for ΣREY and other geochemical proxies than southern-central GBR samples. The reasons include differences in shelf geomorphology, timing and rates of shelf flooding, and palaeo-mangrove development near the northern-central GBR as an additional source for the sediments. Temporally, five distinct geochemical peaks in ΣREY and other geochemical proxies are observed, at 22-20 ka, 18-17 ka, 16-15 ka, 12-10 ka and 8-6 ka. These peaks are associated with a degradation in reef development, characterised by major changes in coral-algal assemblages, decreases in accretion rates and even death events, that are consistent with previous studies, including those on downhole gamma ray and palaeoecology work.

Abstract:
In this work, the plate bending linear formulation of the boundary element method - BEM, based on the Kirchhoff\'s hypothesis, is extended to incorporate beam elements. The final objective of the work is to obtain a numerical model to analyse building floor structures, in which stiffness is further increased by the presence of membrane effects. From the boundary integral representations of the bending and the stretching problems a particular integral equation to represent the equilibrium of the whole body is obtained. Using this integral equation, no approximation of the generalized forces along the interface is required. Moreover, compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the interface are automatically imposed by the integral equation. An alternative formulation where the number of degrees of freedom is further reduced is also investigated. In this case, the kinematics Navier-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to simplify the strain field for the thin sub-regions (beams). Then, the formulation is extended to perform non-linear analysis by incorporating initial effort fields. Then non-linear solution is obtained using the concept of the local consistent tangent operator. The domain integral required, to evaluate the initial effort influences, are performed by using the well-known cell sub-division. The non-linear behaviour is evaluated by the Von Mises criterion, that is verified at points along the plate thickness, appropriately placed to allow performing numerical integration to approach moments and normal forces using Gauss point schemes.

Dunaiski, Wibke. "Investigation into the effective lengths of web compression elements in parallel chord trusses." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2410.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
The Southern African Institute of Steel Construction expressed concern with regard to the unit definition of the effective length factor, K, stipulated for compressive elements of parallel chord trusses in Clause 15 of SANS 10162-1:2005 - Limit state design of hot-rolled steelwork. The simplified method for truss design specified in the code assumes all compression members are pin-connected, which allows for greater design simplicity and reduces the amount of code interpretation required by the designer. In addition to this, Clause 15 requires the additional reduction in resistance of the first web compression members by a factor of 0.85. However, this approach may be considered overly conservative and in current design practice the effective length factor is often reduced to less than 1.0. This research investigates the effective length factor of web compression members in parallel chord trusses, by means of investigative structural analyses of representative trusses using ANGELINE and Prokon analytical programs, and by designing, constructing and testing six representative trusses, using current design practices. A comparative study of a number of different countries’ codified approaches to truss design is also included. The structural analyses revealed that in-plane buckling of the web compression members was the consistent mode of failure, however at a much greater applied load than the design load determined according to SANS 10162-1:2005. Contrary to the expected mode of failure, all six tests performed on the representative trusses exhibited elastic out-of-plane buckling, or strongaxis buckling, of the web compression members, but still at a much greater applied load than the design load. The unexpected out-of-plane buckling of the web members is due to the inplane stiffness of the end connections used. In order to stay true to current design practice, gusset plates and longitudinal welds were used to join the web members to the chords. The stiffness of the gusset plates therefore significantly reduced the effective length of the web compression members in-plane, but did not reduce the effective length out-of-plane. Despite the unanticipated behaviour of the tests performed, certain conclusions can still be drawn from the results. The unit definition of the effective length factor for in-plane buckling of web compression members is too conservative and a K factor of 0.8 is recommended. In addition to this an effective length factor for out-plane-buckling of web compression members of 1.1 is recommended for trusses with welded connections. The necessity of the reduction in resistance of 0.85 of the first web compression members requires further investigation. The most important conclusion to be drawn is that out-of-plane buckling of web compression members can be the dominant failure mode, which is not taken into consideration in current design practice.

Abstract:
Based on the design decision making process from an architect’s point of view, a related literature review, theoretical analyses, and inductive inferences, this thesis proposes a new interpretation of high-performance building (HPB), translates/maps criteria issues related to building environmental assessment (BEA) tools for key design decision making elements, and identifies sources of inspiration for HPB designs. This thesis intends to propose an integrated conceptual model for the design of HPBs to provide direct knowledge-based decision making support to architects in the early design phase. Studies on key design decision making elements, sources of inspiration, and building information modeling are integrated into this genesis of conceptual design. The concept of the HPB proposed in this thesis emphasizes comprehensive sustainable building performance in environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects. The concept takes the view that HPBs should be aesthetically attractive, socio-culturally adapted, safe, healthy, and comfortable, and should operate at a high level of environmental, resource, and economic efficiency throughout their life cycle. This thesis discusses the topics of the necessity, benefits, and design principles of HPBs. An analysis of the characteristics of BEA tools and HPB design decision making revealed their relationship: the consequence of goals and the mismatch of practices. BEA tools provide the basic information (such as framework, content, evaluation methods, and processes) related to decision making to promote a holistic HPB design at a practical level. However, given the mismatch of practices between BEA tools and HPB design decision making, most such tools are still used for testing and verifying the design results and do not consider the design decision making process. Existing BEA tools primarily guide or indirectly affect the design work but, in practice, play a limited role in directly helping architects make early decisions regarding HPB design. First, for a detailed comparison, this thesis identified the common criteria issues for the three existing BEA tools: SBTool 2012 (maximum version), LEED NC-v3, and the Chinese Evaluation Standard for Green Building (ESGB). A total of 51 common/similar criteria issues were identified and such issues were found to be primarily allocated in the energy and resources, indoor environmental quality, environmental loads, and site areas. SBTool 2012 contains the widest range and most comprehensive criteria issues of building performance, whereas the LEED NC-v3 and ESGB frameworks poorly cover social- and economic-related issues. Second, this thesis separated the criteria into whether they relate to decision making factors or building performance factors. Third, this thesis mapped HPB criteria issues into HPB design decision making elements. This thesis establishes a framework for key design decision elements for Chinese residential buildings by selecting a residential building type in China as a case study for the mapping approach application. The optimum criteria issues for Chinese residential buildings contain 10 primary criteria issues and 35 sub-criteria issues that cover aspects within the entire sustainable performance range and that correspond to key design decision making elements in this framework. This thesis also proposes two fundamental support approaches to creative design for HPBs: rational technical support and irrational divergent inspirational support. Based on practical design examples, three major types of irrational sources of inspiration in an architect’s design for HPBs have been identified: previous empirics, nature objects and phenomena, and advanced science and technologies. Finally, a new integrated conceptual model to support an architect’s early design decisions is established based on the BIM platform. The model contains two main aspects of the work: an initial building information model and an optimal building information model for HPBs during the early design stage. This conceptual model is presented as a generic approach that can be customized for different designers and project conditions. The model can also be used as a framework for providing knowledge-based creative support for decision making related to HPB design. In summary, this thesis intends to provide both a theoretical base and feasible measures for better HPB design and references for developing design decision making support tools for architects to use during the early HPB design process.

Abstract:
Following a major earthquake event, essential public amenities such as medical facilities and transport networks need to remain functional - not only to fulfil their ongoing role in serving the community but also to cope with the added and immediate demand of a population affected by a natural disaster. Furthermore, the economic implications of wide spread damage to housing and commercial facilities should not be discounted. A shift in design approach is required that is consistent with current trends towards performance based building design. The present aim is to achieve seismic energy dissipation during the earthquake event, without the aftermath of damage to structural elements, whilst maintaining design economies. Structures permitted to rock on their foundations and provide recoverable rotations at the beam-column interfaces offer significant advantages over those using conventional ductile detailing. A jointed construction philosophy can be applied whereby structural elements are connected with unbonded prestressing tendons. Supplemental damping is provided by replaceable flexural steel components designed to deform inelastically. For this research a multi-storey test building of one quarter scale has been constructed and tested on an earthquake simulator at the University of Canterbury. A computer model has been developed and a set ofpreliminary design procedures proposed.

Abstract:
Connections in wood have been investigated and advanced ever since the ground-breaking work of Johansen in the early nineteenth century. Nevertheless, not much investigation has been undertaken on the existence of load-displacement path dependency in a sheathing-to-framing connection. Herein, a sheathing-to-framing connection is investigated in relation to displacement path dependency. This work uses 3D Finite Element beam-on-foundation models of an Oriented Strand Board (OSB/2) sheathing nailed to a C24 wood framing, to study possible strategies to numerically simulate the displacement path dependency. The models are used to study if non-linear elastic or elastic-plastic embedment properties of an annular-ringed shank nail in the wood-based materials bring about the path dependency using Connector elements in combination with different material models in the FE software Abaqus. Numerical results are compared with corresponding experimental test results of the connection together with the Eurocode 5 approach. The outcome of the numerical study both; confirms the existence of displacement path dependency and shows that this property in the connection can be described by plasticity properties in nail, sheathing material and the wood framing.

Abstract:
Examined in this study were some physical, mechanical, compositional and durability properties of AAC, its neighboring plasters and jointing adhesive, all of which were produced in Turkey. The compatibility of these materials inside the contemporary wall section and within historic fabric was discussed in terms of their material properties. In addition to the literature survey, laboratory studies were conducted on two types of AAC as G2 and G4, its jointing adhesive and exterior finishing layers as base coat, under coat, finish coat, water repellent finish coat
and some historical traditional construction materials of Anatolia as timber, masonry and infill brick, lime based exterior and interior plasters. The results were evaluated in terms of material properties of AAC, the compatibility of AAC and its complementary elements with each other and with the historic timber framed structures in Anatolia. It was concluded that the use of AAC in repairs of historical structures could be discussed only if the original infill is lost. In addition, its cement-plasters should be avoided from the historic fabric since they introduce salt problems to the structure. In terms of vapor permeability and modulus of elasticity, water repellent finish coat was proper finishing for AAC, and AAC, especially G4, exhibited similarities with historic infill mud brick. Further studies on other compatibility parameters were, however, necessary to decide on the compatibility of AAC with its neighboring materials. Moreover, the integrity of AAC with the historic fabric needed improvement by increasing its pozzolanicity and/or producing a new intermediary repair mortar/plaster.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate on the modelling of the non-structural elements related to internal and external infill walls, trying to quantify the difference induced by different modelling strategies on the value of the seismic vulnerability index with reference to strategic buildings. On this purpose, two case studies are analysed: the Benedetto Croce high school in Avezzano and the Varano high school in Camerino, r.c. frame buildings retrofitted with external steel towers equipped with viscous dampers at the basis. For both case studies, three models are implemented, before and after the retrofitting, which are characterized by an increasing level of detail: model A with only structural components, model B with external infill panels modelled as equivalent connecting struts according to literature, and model C with external and internal infill walls calibrated through the results of in-situ dynamic tests. As regards the pre-retrofitting phase, the calculation of the seismic vulnerability index was carried out by means of nonlinear static analysis (pushover). As for the post-retrofitting phase, the calculation of the seismic vulnerability index was carried out by means of non-linear dynamic analysis (I.D.A). The results are shown in terms of comparison between the capacity curves obtained with push over analyses (pre-retrofitting) and with incremental dynamic analyses for the different model. In addition, the outcomes are shown also in terms of intensity level of the seismic action necessary to reach a predetermined limit state for model A, model B and model C.

The present work concerns the use of shade elements as architectural elements to block sunlight in public buildings. In a city like Natal, (5o South) the incidence of sunrays in any type of design should be a constant concern for all the architects. Besides, this habit of avoiding insolation in the environment is not a common practice. Within this context, the present work has the objective to dig deep into the knowledge of solar control, studying some cases and verifying its function according to the orientation and the original design of the building, having in mind if the shade elements usually used in the region have achieved their purpose of providing protection against the incidence of direct sun rays. This study considers the position of the shade element (horizontal and vertical), the angle formed between them and the respective facades, and the local of the buildings in relation to their orientation during the summer, winter and equinox solstice. As supporting instruments the solar map of the city and the protractor, for measuring shade angles, were used. It was concluded that in all the cases studied, it was not possible to obtain the maximum use of the elements. It was verified that the best type of shade element (more efficient) for the city of Natal is the mixed type (horizontal and vertical) and that the vertical shade elements are more efficient in the early mornings and late afternoon. The horizontal shade elements are used more effective at midday. We intend to present the results of this study to the architects in the region in order to show them the correct ways of using the shade elements according to the possible orientation on the facade, as a supporting tool at the time of designing a project as well as a subsidy for further discussions on the elaboration of the new urban standards for the city of Natal/RN

Abstract:
Lägenheterna finns i tre storlekar: 1:or, 1,5:or och 4:or.  De större lägenheterna är i två plan.
The housing policy conducted over the past two decades has resulted in an increasingly segregated city center in Stockholm. The abolishment of housing subsidies in the 90s led to a historic low rate of construction and an urban development unilaterally directed towards the wealthy. Parallel to this, much of the housing stock has been converted to condominiums which caused many relatively cheap rental apartments in older buildings to disappear from the stock. These are difficult to replace with new housing, as they are more expensive. The core issue is of course that it is expensive to build houses and assuming that the current housing policy will last, it is highly relevant to develop cost-effective construction methods in order to make possible apartments with affordable rents that can help to combat segregation over time. Our proposal consists of a residential building in Stadshagen. The property is divided into two buildings that are linked together by a system of access balconies connected to a stairwell. The houses are constructed with volume elements stacked on a concrete base. The design of the elements is based on shipping containers which provides a rational construction process and a high degree of prefabrication. The base contains an underground entrance, a business premise and common areas for the residents. The apartments are available in three sizes whereof the larger apartments have two floors.
