Full textMarine sediments in continental margins are known to be enriched in Sedimentary Organic Matter (SOM) which can yield methane by microbial activity. Previous results collected in the framework of the PAMELA research project allowed to identify several seepages of microbial methane offshore Aquitaine (Bay of Biscay) and along the Mozambique and Madagascar continental margins. In order to better understand the impact of the Organic Matter (OM) on such fluid systems, we (1) characterized the OM, and (2) proposed a new modelling approach to predict methane cycle at the basin scale from its generation to migration and release. The OM in the Mozambique Channel shows heterogeneities at large scale in quality and quantity between the Mozambique and the Madagascar margins. We concluded that isotopic signature variations can be the result of different transport and preservation conditions between the two sites. A new modelling approach was applied to the Bay of Biscay biogenic fluid system. It consists of a basin modelling workflow of microbial gas generation and migration process at the basin scale and accounts for OM biodegradation processes and the main biogenic gas sink. The results allowed us to propose a reference scenario for microbial gas production in offshore Aquitaine that is compared with measured data from in situ bubbling sites and acoustic water column signatures. The biogenic system appears to be sourced by biogenic gas system found in the Plio-Pleistocene sediments that is still active, with a mean flow rate estimated between 0.87 and 1.48 Tcf/My

Full textThe stenosis of atheroma plaque arteries is a major health problem that affects a significant proportion of the population in the industrialized countries. Therefore, the study of blood flow after stenosis is the subject of much research. The simulation of the real behavior of this one requires taking into consideration the physiological conditions of the problem posed namely the non-Newtonian nature of the blood and the pulsed conditions in the arteries. The spectral element method is used to study 3D turbulent blood flows in cylindrical geometry with a sinusoidal shape reduction. The axisymmetric geometry was considered at first. The low eccentricity rate (of the order of ten and twenty percent) was then introduced at the level of the stenosis later. The geometries are simplified models of the physiological reality of diseased arteries. The aim was to describe and examine the turbulent characteristics of stenotic flows and to analyze the turbulent kinetic energy budget. The rheological model of Casson has been implemented in the NEK5000 open source code in order to take into account the non-Newtonian behavior of the blood. Direct numerical simulation was used. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the presentation of the investigation of stationary flow through a pipe with axisymmetric sinusoidal shape reduction for Reynolds numbers between 2480 and 4542 for the Newtonian model and the blood Casson model. Stationary flows are examined numerically, turbulent kinetic energy budgets for two blood models are analyzed and limits of the numerical method are presented. The results for both types of geometry were compared. The second part aims to present an investigation of the Woomersley type pulsed flow through a pipe with axisymmetric pipe for the Newtonian model and the blood Casson model. Difficulties encountered in the analysis of a pulsed turbulent flow are discussed

Full textSolar irradiance at the surface of the Earth is recognized as an essential climate variable by the World Meteorological Organization. Its knowledge is as much important for climate sciences as for the development of energy alternatives to fossil fuels, like solar photovoltaic. Ground measurements of this radiation are very sparse on Earth, explaining the interest for satellite-based remote sensing to estimate it. Combining estimations from different satellites in orbit is a pathway to cover the information on the whole globe. Different generations of satellites also produced a multidecadal imagery of the Earth, making it conceivable to estimate long time series of solar radiation, or even to identify long-term variations, a recurrent objective in the study of climate change. For more than 30 years, Heliosat methods estimate surface solar irradiance from satellite imagery, but they have been designed to be applied to a specific sensor on a geostationary orbit, and have limitations in their scope : the need for a long archive of satellite imagery (Heliosat, Heliosat-2), or else the need for multispectral measurements (Heliosat-4). This work dedicated to the development of a Heliosat-V method brings elements of versatility to the satellite-based estimation from so-called "cloud-index" methods, with the ultimate goal to reach homogeneous data of solar radiation derived from measurements made by different satellite instruments. Two issues are in particular considered here to reach such an estimation: the diversity of sensors in terms of spectral sensitivities, and the influence of viewing and solar geometries on spaceborne measurements. The method extensively deals with radiative transfer modeling in the spectral range 400-1000 nm to simulate on one hand satellite measurements in clear-sky conditions, and on the other hand satellite measurements in the presence of an optically thick cloud. The method is tested on the imagery of a geostationary satellite instrument, Meteosat-9/SEVIRI, and in a more exploratory way, on the non geostationary sensor DSCOVR/EPIC. Results are compared to high quality ground-based measurements of irradiance, and show performances similar to operational satellite products. However, the quality of estimates depends on the spectral channel used, and especially of the presence of clear-sky atmospheric scattering or absorption in the signal measured by the satellite instrument. The accent is also put on the need for an accurate absolute calibration of satellite radiometric measurements in order to produce time series of surface solar irradiance with the smallest biases and temporal drift possible

Full textThe south-west of France has been identified as a region for which climate change effects will be the harder to mitigate. Agriculture is already representing 41% of the water use in the Adour-Garonne watershed and will have to adapt to the effects of climate change on the water cycle: more irregular precipitations, lowering of the rivers rate of flow... New methods for monitoring will be necessary for the responsible use of water. Loss to the atmosphere is the major constraint of the water budget in agricultural areas. This evapotranspiration flux is part of the coupled water and energy budget of the surface; in particular, it allows one to identify water stress events. The estimation of evapotranspiration flux at a large scale relies on remote sensing images or a modeling of exchanges at the surface, sometime both. The wavelength domains used allow sampling of different surface properties. Microwave used in radar is sensitive to the target geometry and its water content. It is also insensitive to cloud cover. Visible images are used to monitor vegetation development with spectral indexes. Thermal infrared gives information of surface temperature and can detect water stress. The combined use of these three wavelength domains, each with its respective strength, in a water and energy budget modeling scheme could allow to better monitor surface processes. This study focuses on the complementarities of the three wavelength domains in a case of wheat and sunflower monitoring in south west of France over the year 2010. It is focused on the spatial and temporal variability of a visible based vegetation descriptor (the GAI: Green Area Index), surface temperature (Ts) and C-band backscattering coefficient over 13 fields of wheat and 6 fields of sunflower. This variability allows us to select various parameterizations of the water and energy budget model SEtHyS. The study is organized as follow: - We first studied the sensitivity of C-band backscattering coefficient to the spatial and temporal variability of 2 surface properties: top soil moisture and GAI. The 4 radar polarizations as well as 2 polarization ratios are covered. - We adapted the [surface temperature-vegetation index] method for a temporal use of the entire remote sensing dataset. Using this method we retrieved an index we called RTVDI (Relative Temperature Vegetation Difference Index) which we used to rank fields and extract patterns. - We finally used the SEtHyS model to try and reproduce the RTVDI variability previously observed. The first approach is realized using the model in direct mode to identify sensitive parameters for water budget modeling. The radar sensitivity study confirmed the vegetation monitoring ability of C-band radar. Thresholds on height allowed identifying periods when radar is sensitive to top soil moisture. The modified trapezoid method allowed selecting groups of fields with variable hydric properties.[...]

Full textThe quality of primary education in Côte d'Ivoire has deteriorated sharply over the past three decades. This situation is the result of an approximate management of the education system, which is characterized by a lack of educational support, a misallocation of resources, a congestion of classrooms (42 students for a teacher in primary school) and a lack of skilled and well trained teachers. In addition, the military-political conflict in September 2002 did not allow to improve this situation; on the contrary, it has further deteriorated the situation. Thus, the aim of this thesis is first to analyze the influence of resource endowments on the effectiveness of primary schools in Cote d'Ivoire on the basis of a survey on the competence conducted by the Ministry of Education. Secondly, it examines the impact of military-political conflict in September 2002 on the demand for education based on data from the MICS-2000 and 2006 household surveys. To do this, a classification of schools according to their resource endowment was made, then, using the method of data envelopment analysis (DEA nonparametric method), an efficiency frontier is constructed to highlight the specificities of schools and finally an econometric estimation (Tobit model censored data) is implemented to identify factors influencing the formation of effectiveness scores. The analysis shows that increasing the amount of resources allocated to a school does not guarantee its performance as the efficiency factors are not resident in endowment quantity, but rather in the endowment quality, that is the values and characteristics intrinsic to people and materials available to schools, this fact in order to fit the specific needs of schools and fairness. Furthermore, using a methodology combining both double differences estimation, the triple differences estimation and correction by the robustness checks, we find that the rate of access and completed grades of primary school s one to six of primary school declined because of the crisis. Indeed, the proportions of children completing levels 1 and 2 have fallen by 25% and those of children completing levels 3, 4 and 5 have decreased by 22%, 16% and 4% respectively
