Abstract:
Anagarika Dharmapala was one of the most prominent public figures in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). This book goes into a detailed exploration of Dharmapala’s multifaceted personal and public life. This analytical narration of the ethos in which he lived and worked provides an essential background. The author makes extensive use of Dharmapala’s assiduously kept diaries to weave his story. In its initial chapters, the book relates the confrontation and resistance of a nascent nationalist movement in the form of a renaissance of the country’s main traditional religion, Buddhism, against the all-pervading colonial ethos. Dharmapala, with all the enthusiasm of his youth, plunged into this movement, which received the support of American theosophists led by Col Henry Steel Olcott. He became the live wire of the Buddhist Theosophical Society, formed on the advice of the theosophists, and went around the country hectoring his compatriots to join a movement of national resurgence. Dharmapala eventually broadened the arena of his interests and action. The restoration of the prominent sacred places of Buddhism in India, while bringing them back to Buddhist custody, became his life’s mission. In this endeavour, he sought and received the support of the intellectual and professional nationalist elite of Bengali society. In pursuit of his cause, Dharmapala was single minded. But he had an even a wider interest—that of propagating Buddhism throughout the world. He devoted much of his energy in later life to establish Buddhist centres in Europe, and ended his life as a Buddhist monk.

Abstract:
During the twentieth century indigenous leadership and mission initiative moved Anglicanism in South Asia from a British colonial identity to ecclesial autonomy and then to organic union with Protestant bodies in order to strengthen Christian proclamation and social advocacy amid the dominant Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist populations of the subcontinent. This chapter addresses successively the early decades, mission in mass movements, local leadership and self-governance, and the distinctive drive towards church union that resulted in the Church of South India, the Church of North India, the Church of Pakistan, the Church of Bangladesh, and an unsuccessful union initiative for the Church of Ceylon. While new ecclesial identities now occupy centre stage, strong Anglican influences in the governance, liturgies, and public advocacy of the united Churches sustain their membership in the Anglican Communion and their place in the continuing global Anglican story.

Abstract:
Prince Prisdang Chumsai (1852–1935) served as Siam's first diplomat to Europe during the most dramatic moment of Siam's political history, when its independence was threatened by European imperialism. Despite serving with patriotic zeal, he suffered irreparable social and political ruin based on rumors about fiscal corruption, sexual immorality, and political treason. This book pursues the truth behind these rumors, which chased Prisdang out of Siam. This book recounts the personal and political adventures of an unwitting provocateur who caused a commotion in every country he inhabited. Prisdang spent his first five years in exile from Siam living in disguise as a commoner and employee of the British Empire in colonial Southeast Asia. He then resurfaced in the 1890s in British Ceylon, where he was ordained as a Buddhist monk and became a widely-respected abbot. Foreigners from around the world were drawn to this prince who had discarded wealth and royal status to lead the life of an ascetic. His fluency in English, royal blood, acute intellect, and charisma earned him importance in international diplomatic and Buddhist circles. Prisdang's life journey reminds us of the complexities of the colonial encounter and the recalibrations it caused in local political cultures. His drama offers more than a story about Siamese politics: it also casts in high relief the subjective experience of global imperialism. Telling this history from the vantage point of a remarkable individual grounds and animates the historical abstractions of imperialism, Buddhist universalism, and the transformation of Siam into a modern state.
