Syftet med föreliggande studie är att studera en svensk skola utomlands och dess mellanstadielevers och lärares upplevelser av den thailändska religionen. Uppsatsens frågeställningar:

· Hur upplever eleverna att de påverkas av att gå i en svensk skola utomlands?

· Hur beskriver lärarna att de arbetar med undervisningen i religion på en svensk skola utomlands?

· Hur upplever eleverna den thailändska religionen i skolan? Finns det några likheter eller skillnader, enligt lärare och elever, med svenska skolan hemma, när det gäller religionsundervisningen?

Resultatet av undersökningen visade att eleverna uppskattade den lärarledda tiden som de tyckte var möjlig i större utsträckning på skolan utomlands. Undersökningen visade även att lärarna upplevde att det fanns många likheter med religionsundervisningen i Sverige såsom kursplaner och ämnets innehåll medan de ansåg däremot att det som skiljde dem åt var möjligheten till mycket mer studiebesök och möjlighet till lärarledd tid på skolan i Thailand. Eleverna upplevde buddhismen på olika vis och med olika djup kunskap beroende på hur länge de varit på plats i Thailand.

Abstract:
While monastic identity and ascetic practices such as vipassanā meditation have historically been the preserve of monks, requiring full ordination and celibacy, in contemporary Thailand ‘monastic’ and ‘lay’ are not fixed or mutually exclusive categories: temporary ordination for short periods of time has always been available to Thai men; vipassanā has been propagated to the laity since the 1950s; large numbers of laity now enter monasteries as mediation students for short periods and accept monastic precepts for the duration of their retreat; and finally, the subsequent monasticization of popular Buddhism is enabling Thai Buddhist nuns (mae chee), though outside the ordained monastic community (sangha), to define themselves in ways which are, critically, religious, ascetic and  associated with prestige. At the same time, it is providing a vehicle for the actualization of renunciation through the monastic duty to teach and embody the principles of meditation. Monastic identity and practice remain distinct from that of the laity even as lay practice becomes increasingly monasticized. I identify the paradox of will and spontaneity in religious attainment as highlighting the appropriateness of vipassanā  practice in the Buddhist ethical project of cutting attachment to ones self. The morality of monastics presents paradox as a process of self-aware reflection on the one hand and, on the other, absence of self in the performance of one’s moral duty to the laity. For meditation practitioners it is through such self-willed practice that the ethical ideals of non-self (anatta) and spiritual attainment may be actualized. Through the performance of mindfulness within a community of practice, monastics cultivate an ascetic interiority, creating the cognitive space in which spiritual development may be actualized. In this context the ethical ideals of monasticism are actualized through the practice of meditation.

Cette étude, conçue comme un état des lieux des peintures murales dans les monastères de six districts de la province de Chiang Mai, a permis d’une part d’étudier les différents acteurs de la commande artistique [commanditaires, donateurs, artistes] et d’autre part de définir ces peintures en quatre groupes selon une classification à la fois chronologique et stylistique. Les multiples facteurs susceptibles d’influencer la présence ou l’absence de peintures dans les temples ont été également examinés. Une comparaison de l’iconographie présentée dans ces temples entre les quatre groupes retrouvés a été également entreprise afin d’affiner les caractéristiques de ces derniers. En parallèle, une attention toute particulière a été portée aux artistes travaillant dans les temples afin de mieux connaître ces individus méconnus et ignorés. Formations, milieux sociaux, place de la femme artiste, inspirations et influences, autant de thèmes évoqués au sein de cette étude
This study, designed as an inventory of murals in the monasteries of six districts of the province of Chiang Mai made it possible on the one hand to study the various actors involved in an art order [sponsors, donors, artists] and on the other hand to classify these paintings into four groups according to their chronological and stylistic description. The multiple factors likely to influence the presence or the absence of paintings in the temples were also examined. A comparison of the iconography between the four groups found in these temples was also undertaken in order to refine their characteristics. In parallel, special attention was paid to the artists working in the temples in order to learn more about these unsung and ignored individuals. Training, social environments, place of the woman artist, inspirations and influences are topics discussed in this study

Cette recherche porte sur l’investigation philologique d’un texte bouddhique en pali, le Vajirasaratthasangaha composé dans le Nord de la Thaïlande (XVe-XVIe siècles), qui n’a jamais fait l’objet d’une étude intégrale. Le but est d’établir une édition critique de ce texte et de son commentaire, traduire intégralement ce corpus, et saisir sa place dans le bouddhisme du sud-est asiatique. Ce compendium est unique dans le champ de la littérature pali, tant dans la nature de ses contenus que dans son mode de présentation. Il embrasse un grand volume d’enseignements qui traitent de thématiques diverses, telles que des points de doctrines religieuses, de l’étymologie, des mathématiques, de la poétique, la cosmologie, des devinettes, etc. Le mode de composition singulier de ce texte s’appuie sur le codage de chacun de ses chapitres, faisant appel à des mécanismes et jeux qui concernent essentiellement le langage et sa construction : devinettes savantes, notions grammaticales, polysémies, acrostiches, etc. Cette œuvre est ainsi une synthèse originale d’éléments érudits (hua chai, ekakkhara, etc.) qui témoigne d’une part de l’importance qu’a pu revêtir l’étude avancée de la langue dans le contexte du Lanna du XVIe siècle. D’autre part, certains de ses enseignements éclairent d’un jour nouveau certaines spécificités régionales dans leurs dimensions pratiques et ésotériques. This research is a philological investigation of a Buddhist text in Pali, the Vajirasaratthasangaha written in Northern Thailand (15th-16th), which has never been the object of a full-fledged study. It aims to establish a critical edition of this text and its commentary, to translate this corpus, and to understand its place within the Buddhism of South-East Asia. This compendium is unique in the Pali literary landscape, in its mode of presentation as well as in its contents. It contains an important amount of Buddhist teachings that deal with a variety of topics, such as moral principles for lay Buddhists, etymology, mathematics, poetics, cosmology, riddles, etc. The singular mode of composition of this text is based on the encoding of each chapters, mainly relying on mechanisms and games that concern essentially the language and its construction: riddles, grammatical notions, polysemies, acrostichs, etc. Thus, this text is an original synthesis of scholarly elements (hua chai, ekakkhara, etc.) that testifies, first, to the importance of advanced linguistic studies in the Lanna context during the 16th century. Secondly, some of the elements presented throw some new light on regional specificities in their practical and esoterical dimensions, opening new ways for understanding the status of Pali as a sacred language

Today, all companies face a challenge to cope with the globalized market, where organizations continuously establish on new markets in new countries. Different cultures meet and must be able to collaborate in an organization. The increased economic growth as well as the explosive Swedish tourism in Thailand today attracts more and more Swedish companies to the Thai market. It is likely that this can lead to different cultural challenges where people from different cultures meet and are forced to adapt to each other's established norms and behaviors. Our study aims to investigate the cultural challenges experienced by Swedish executives in Thailand. Our purpose is to identify the largest cultural challenges experienced by Swedish executives and to understand why this may be perceived as a cultural challenge among the Swedish executives. A qualitative method and a semi-structured interview form have been used in the conduct of the survey. The result showed that the main cultural challenges experienced by the Swedish executives were hierarchy, view of a leader, crosscultural leadership and collectivism. The Buddhist religion, the strongly established norms of Thai culture and the executives own positive and adaptable attitude towards cultural challenges proved to be the reason why these cultural challenges were experienced by the Swedish executives.

Urak Lawoi is the name of one of the sea nomadic tribes which lives along the shores of Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. They are spread on many of the islands in the Andaman Sea archipelago and Ko Lanta is the main settlement. Urak Lawoi is regarded as the indigenous people of the island and they live there as a minority together with Muslims and Thai-Chinese.  The traditional religion and culture of Urak Lawoi is built upon the animistic belief of their ancestors. In the last 20 years Ko Lanta has experienced a tremendous process of change caused by increasing tourism. The conditions of the Urak Lawoi and their way of life have dramatically changed. The fact that this process brings consequences for the traditional culture and religion is obvious, but in what direction is it developing? To be able to interpret and expound the material from my field studies among Urak Lawoi on Ko Lanta in October-December 2009, I have done a literature search to investigate the animistic traditions and the syncretistic nature of belief in Thailand. I have also tried to find theories about the process of religious change and the forces working behind them. In this essay I am trying to do a theoretical analysis of the field study material using theories and parallel examples I have found in the literature.

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the characteristics of credit card holders and the extent of credit card usage, the level of credit card knowledge, and the consumer's choice perspectives. The characteristics of credit card holders studied were (a) gender, (b) age, (c) marital status, (d) education, (e) income, and (f) occupation. Data for this study were collected in Bangkok, Thailand by telephone interviews during July- August 1993. The sample consisted of 150 Bangkok Bank credit card holders. Chi-square and Cramer's V were used to analyze the hypotheses. For all statistical analyses the level of significance was set at .05. As a result of the 18 specific null hypothesis tests, only two independent variables were found to have a statistically significant relationship with the extent of credit card usage. The findings suggested a positive relationship between the extent of credit card usage and occupation and income. Respondents with higher occupational status and income tended to use credit cards to a greater extent than those with lower occupational status and income. Gender, age, marital status, and education were not related to the extent of credit card usage in this study. No significant differences were found among the demographic characteristics of credit card holders and the level of credit card knowledge, and consumer's choice perspectives. Gender, age, marital status. education, occupation, and income were not related to the level of credit card knowledge and the consumer's choice. The results revealed that most Thai credit card holders were not knowledgeable about credit card terms. They were clearly influenced by environmental stimuli, and the effects of society and group norms when they applied for a credit card. They generally chose a card with incomplete information about the alternatives.

This study examines MOOC learning environment situated within the Thai cultural context and Thai cultural dimensions (Hofstede, 1997). The study draws on connectivist theory to conduct a qualitative study to investigate the four dimensions of learner engagement: behavioural, cognitive, emotional, and social engagement in online MOOC learning. Data were collected from three selected Thai MOOCs through semi-structured interviews with three instructors and 30 students. Results indicate that while instructors excluded themselves from cultural engagement within the online learning environment, learners were considered objects to adapt to institutional culture and cultural engagement was a mere additive to the pedagogy.

Abstract:
Based on oral histories of agriculture and health in the Mae Chaem valley, northern Thailand, this work documents changing child health and medical practice since the 1950's and explores possible connections with increasing pesticide use. The research shows how local knowledge can help us understand relationships between changing technology, ecology, and human health. Parents and farmers in the Mae Chaem valley of Chiang Mai province, Northern Thailand, live at the intersection of multiple local and global streams of land use and child health biotechnology. Based on systematically collected autobiographical oral histories from parents and farmers, as well as interviews and participant observation with land use and child health experts the study considers the relationships between child health and land use change, and particularly the rise of pesticide intensive cash cropping, since the late 1950’s. Introductory chapters on theory and methods precede a description of the ethnographic context. Case studies illustrating parent and farmer histories of child health and land use change spanning fifty years are provided. Seven streams of biotechnical expertise are identified, and mini-ethnographies are provided for each including domestic, Buddhist, Muang, spirit, market, national, and Christian. These seven streams are analyzed using actor-network theory (ANT) with relationships to particular notions of ontology, cosmology, and ecology. Results demonstrate the ongoing importance of parents and farmers as decision making agents at the intersection of multiple and competing cultural and biotechnical streams, even where they face efforts by large multinational corporations or other agencies to advertise, constrain and monopolize local biotechnical choice. Within the fifty year time period under consideration, the oral histories describe particular child health and land use trends. These locally perceived trends provide challenging perspectives on the relationship between ‘development’ and child health in Thailand. While children die far less often now than in the past, oral histories suggest that both children and fields now suffer from more kinds of illness, and more often, than before. In particular, both qualitative and more quantitative analysis suggests differences in the experience of child health among pesticide and non-pesticide using households.

Läromedel i religionskunskap på gymnasiet kan vara problematiska att använda. Religionerna hinduism och buddhism framställs ofta som österländska religioner som avviker från den västerländska religiösa normen. Likaså brister många läromedel i genus- och jämställdhetsperspektiv. Detta examensarbete har som syfte att analysera hur hinduism och buddhism framställs i tre läromedel i religionskunskap på gymnasiet i både text- och bildmaterial. Undersökningen utgår från postkolonial teoribildning och ett genus- och jämställdhetsperspektiv. Jag analyserar om det finns orientalistiska tendenser i framställningarna om hinduism och buddhism och om kvinnor och män får lika stort utrymme samt hur respektive kön framställs. Resultatet visar att hinduism och buddhism framställs utifrån ett eurocentrisk och kristocentrisk perspektiv. Båda religionerna är utsatta för exotifiering och romantisering. Det finns även ett tydligt vi- och dem-perspektiv i framställningarna av religionerna. Resultatet visar också att läromedlen i kapitlen om hinduism och buddhism inte ger män och kvinnor lika stort utrymme och att mannen ofta framställs som normen som kvinnan mäts gentemot. Berättelsen om kvinnan blir en tilläggskategori då hon inte ingår i den generella beskrivningen av religionen. Män porträtteras också i högre utsträckning i bildmaterial och skildrar ett helighetsideal medan kvinnor i större utsträckning utför vardagssysslor. Slutsatsen är att samtliga tre läromedel i någon grad innehåller orientalistiska tendenser och att de brister i genus- och jämställdhetsperspektiv.

The study of the Hellenistic period has produced a historical construction of the various relationships that formed between the Greco-Macedonian settlers and the natives they came into contact with. Hellenic kings established kingdoms as far as modern day Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, bringing them into contact with the Persian and Indian natives. The study herein is focused on the relationship that formed between the Greco-Macedonian descendants and the Buddhist group that emerged out of India. Numismatic evidence shows that Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kings held political control over regions bordering the Hindu Kush; furthermore, the Indo-Greek coins indicate a relationship between their kings and the Buddhists. Artistic representations found in various cities, such as Ai-Khanoum, illuminate on the cultural blending that occurred as Greek themes began to be represented through local techniques and material. Ancient literature and archeological remains provide further proof of interaction and help to give an identity to key Greek and Indian monarchs. With regard to Buddhism, these monarchs played an important role in the growth of the religion as, alongside artistic expression, the religion had prospered since its beginnings through the aid of royal patronage. In the Greek kingdoms the Buddhists found new mediums of artistic expression and kings that supported their monastic and lay lives; in turn the Greeks saw a pacifist religious group that attracted merchants and wealth. The relationship was mutually beneficial and numismatic evidence from the Indo-Greeks shows that their kings showed favoritism towards the Buddhists. The conclusion herein is that the Greeks provided the structural foundations for the growth of Buddhism who in turn attracted wealth and provided a medium for cooperation between the Greek monarchs and parts of the native population.

This research examines the efficacy, if any, of the Music and Visual Arts (MVA) program in improving the English vocabulary development of first grade Thai students. The researcher developed the Vocabulary Recognition Assessment (VRA) as a measure of English vocabulary development. It employs the accuracy and rapidity method of word recognition as a measurement of English language development in Thai children. Forty first grade Thai students in a Bangkok elementary school participated in the study. Participants were divided equally between an experimental group and a control group. During a nine-week period, students in the experimental group were instructed with the MVA strategy, while students in the control group were taught with the Visual Arts (VA) strategy. Paired sample t-test, ANOVA, and ANCOVA were used to analyze data from the VRA, to compare the pre-test and the post-test in terms of accuracy scores and rapidity scores of the control group and the experimental group. Data revealed that students instructed with the MVA strategy improved their English vocabulary development in terms of accuracy of word recognition significantly more than students taught English using the VA strategy. No significant difference was found between the MVA strategy and the VA strategy in terms of rapidity of word recognition. The MVA strategy could be a useful strategy for Thai early childhood teachers to use in helping Thai children learn English vocabulary.

Cela n’est guère surprenant pour une religion qui repose sur l’éthique du kamma (selon laquelle la destinée d’un individu, strictement individuelle, résulte de ses actions dans cette vie ou dans une vie antérieure) et qui préconise, dans ses textes fondateurs, le renoncement aux liens filiaux et familiaux, souvent considérés comme une entrave sur la voie de la délivrance. Pour les bouddhistes lao en revanche, la dévotion à l’égard des parents, aïeuls et ancêtres est au centre de la vie religieuse et relève sans conteste de l’Enseignement du Buddha. The Buddhist teachings of the Theravāda, as they are recorded in the Pāli canon (Tipiṭaka), demonstrate little concern for filial piety or ancestor cults. This is hardly surprising for a religion that rests on the ethic of kamma (according to which the fate of a being remains strictly individual, resulting only from his actions in this or previous existences) and recommends, at least in its founding texts, the renunciation of filial and familial ties, often regarded as an obstacle on the path to liberation. In contrast, Lao Buddhists consider that devotion towards parents, forebears and ancestors is at the core of religious life and undoubtedly belongs within the teaching of the Buddha. Giving alms, building a monastery, casting an image of the Master or a saint, commissioning a copy of a manuscript, receiving ordination, practising meditation, participating in annual festivals—more broadly, all kinds of pious deeds—are opportunities to pay homage or provide assistance to parents and lineage spirits, with whom the fruits of these actions will be shared. The purpose of this study is to consider the place occupied by parents and ancestors in Lao Buddhism and to understand how, and to what extent, the Lao have been able to harmonise their own social and familial accounts with the doctrine of the Theravāda, on which their spirituality is understood to rest

When examining the art, actions, and writings of Zurich Dadaists it becomes apparent that there is an affinity with Eastern thought, namely Taoism and Zen Buddhism. It cannot be said that Eastern thought directly influenced the artistic production of these Dadaists. However, the philosophy of Dada artists in Zurich mirrors that of Taoism and Zen so strongly that this connection cannot be ignored, although the Western art historical cannon has done just that. Exploring this connection offers a new perspective of Zurich Dada and encourages a reconsideration of the commonly applied label of nihilism to this group of Dadaists.

This thesis is about the concept of Sustainable Development and its application in Thailand. Whilst many people and Thai Government itself accept the need for sustainable development as an integral part of the country's future, there is no clear consensus on what the application of sustainable development will actually mean for Thailand. Up until this point in time the most common referent for sustainable development in Thailand has been the United Nations´ "Our Common Future" and "Agenda 21". Even though this document contains many broad principles that are applicable, there are significant differences in Thai context, which require alternatives to be proposed. Buddhism supplies a Thai point of departure for such an alternative. This thesis purposes that the principle of Buddhism such as Arriyacca, Patticca-Samuppada, Tri- Lakkha and etc. are entirely appropriate for application on the Thai socio-environment development. This discussion is a key part of this thesis. As a mean of verification and of applied example, the last section of the thesis looks specifically at growth patterns of areas and spaces in "Central Academic Area" (CAD) in the main campuses of regional public-universities of Thailand.

Like all young people, Thai adolescents may experience mental health problems. The Thai secondary school system provides meditation education as part of the National Education Curriculum and as such may potentially play a pivotal role in promoting adolescent’s mental well-being. The aim of this study was: to explore (a) the provision of meditation for students in Thai secondary schools; and (b) teachers’ and students’ perceptions of meditation education and its role in promoting mental well-being of adolescents. A qualitative multiple case study design was employed. Purposive sampling was undertaken to select four schools (two urban, two rural) in the Khonkaen province. Informants were teachers and students who participated in the school based meditation courses. In total, 21 interviews with teachers and eight focus group interviews with adolescent students were conducted, and analysed using Framework approach. Cross-case analysis was undertaken to elicit differences and similarities between rural and urban schools, younger and older students and teachers and students. The results revealed compulsory meditation education was provided during Buddhism classes in both lower and upper school levels. Meditation was also integrated into other subjects to encourage students to practice meditation skills, increase students’ concentration and manage potentially unruly students. Extracurricular activities, not part of the National Education Curriculum, were also provided with the aim of improving students’ morality but provision varied across cases. In general, teachers and students, across all cases, had consistently similar perceptions on the meditation education provided. Meditation education was perceived to have a positive impact on students’ mental well-being, reduced stress, enhanced self-awareness, improved emotional control, enhanced decision making as well as improved interpersonal relationships. Negative aspects from prolonged practice such as physical discomfort or pain and boredom were identified. Recommendations for future research, including exploring the transferability of findings and teacher training needs, are reported.

Abstract:
The Art of Presence: Contemplation, Communing and Creativity reflects on the making of a dance theatre work called Song of Longing presented at Victorian College of the Arts in 2008. Song of Longing was made in collaboration with the cast, who participated in a process centred on improvisation. The resulting performance was a synergy of dance and unaccompanied singing.
The thesis is an investigation of the choreographer's ongoing exploration of movement, singing and improvisation, informed by Buddhist philosophy. Both the writing and the performance mirror an embodied practice - making tangible themes and concepts that have emerged into consciousness.
Central interests include the ‘life-world’ of the artist and its influence on the creative process, the concepts of spirituality, spirit and ‘flow’, the experiential focus of the inquiry, improvisation as presence and the value of art as healing and therapy.
While the perspective of the writing is drawn from the subjectivity of the practitioner, the aim of the work is to draw on the broader fields of research in these areas and to connect with the creative practices of other artists. To this end, a conventional survey of the literature has been augmented by writings and teachings on Buddhism and other spiritual practices, documentaries and visual art. Interviews with artists in Australia and India and thoughts from the performers of Song of Longing are also included.

This thesis has researched and designed a programme that offers an alternative way of working with aggression in a male prison population, using an art therapy approach that incorporates Buddhist concepts as an intervention. Buddhist practices have traditionally been used in Eastern cultures to calm the mind and to develop compassion as an antidote to aggression. Therefore these practices have seen used as a basis for the design of exercises in the programme. The purpose of the programme is to offer an intervention that will complement, support, or be an alternative to existing treatments, which are primarily cognitive-behavioural in orientation. The research method for designing the programme was qualitative, based on an action research model. This paradigm has an approach of co-operative and participatory inquiry which has its roots in humanistic psychology; therefore, working in such a tradition was appropriate to the nature of the research undertaken in that it gave a humanistic and holistic character to the method. The male prison population was chosen as the focus for the proposed programme because it is a convenient sample, clearly identifiable as a group which is likely to have a problem with aggressive behaviour. If art therapy can be successfully applied with such a group, then it may have relevance to other groups exhibiting less aggressive forms of behaviour. Another potentially positive outcome of this treatment intervention is the benefit that it may have on staff, family, and others who are in contact with this population. In other words, a reduction in the stress levels of aggressive prisoners would hopefully have a more general therapeutic effect upon the quality of all the interpersonal relationships within the larger prison community. The benefit of this research to the field of art therapy is that it has explored the potential of such an intervention being used as a therapeutic strategy in dealing with aggression. The study's findings indicate that Buddhist concepts can be successfully incorporated into the design of an art therapy programme. It is hoped that this programme could be used with any population manifesting aggressive behaviours, either covertly or overtly. The results of this study could potentially benefit a range of client populations where an alternative to aggressive or violent behaviour is sought, and it is suggested that future research could be conducted by implementing the programme with diverse groups.

The main purpose of this study is to compare and analyze four interior design programs in the United States, offered at the first professional degree level, to the four interior design programs offered at the baccalaureate level in Thailand. The eight selected programs were: Arizona State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Missouri-Columbia, Rhode Island School of Design, Silpakorn University, King Mongkut's Institution of Technology, Rangsit University, and Bangkok University. The procedure for comparing these programs was made by using the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research's (FIDER's) Eight Basic Categories of Standards for accreditation. An in-depth analysis of each program was completed by breaking down the number of courses and the number of credit hours required in each interior design program and then placing each one into the appropriate FIDER category. In conclusion, the researcher found that between the two countries, the interior design programs showed much variation.

Pendant son séjour diplomatique au Japon de 1921 à 1927, Paul Claudel a rencontré le nô, une forme du théâtre traditionnel. Le dramaturge catholique, issu de la sphère symboliste, découvre dans le nô ce qu’il imaginait pour une nouvelle forme de la « synthèse des arts », c’est-à-dire l’union parfaite entre la Poésie, la Musique et la Danse, imprégnée de spiritualité. A l’aide d’une approche à la fois génétique, historique et comparatiste, notre thèse s’attache à étudier comment il interprète le nô et comment il s’en inspire dans sa propre création. Nous analysons d’abord la manière originale dont il comprend le nô, en adaptant une double perspective, histoire de la réception du nô en Occident depuis XVIe siècle et esthétique dramatique de l’auteur. Son originalité peut être dégagée par la comparaison avec la conception japonaise du nô authentique et par la confrontation avec la vision de ses prédécesseurs occidentaux ; contrairement à ces derniers, il passe sous silence le kyôgen, farce qui accompagne le nô ; son attitude vis-à-vis du bouddhisme est ambiguë ; son essai sur le nô a de grandes qualités littéraires. Ensuite, nous étudions le processus de l’assimilation de la philosophie orientale dans son univers, à la lumière d’un adage de Zeami, fondateur du nô, cité dans le Journal de Claudel. France's Ambassador to Japan from 1921 to 1927, Paul Claudel discovered there the Noh theatre which stems from a medieval performing tradition. The Catholic dramatist and symbolist poet found in the Noh what he had imagined as a new form of “synthesis of arts’’, which was for him a perfect union of Poetry, Music and Dance, open to spirituality. Our method is genetic, historic and comparative in studying his understanding of the Noh, which is a source of inspiration for him. We have adopted a double perspective: first of all we study the history of the reception of the Noh in the Western world from the 16th century onward, and combine this type of investigation with literary considerations about the dramatist's aesthetics. The originality of our poet’s vision appears in comparison with the authentic Japanese conception of the Noh plays and the interpretation of his Western predecessors. For unlike these European specialists, his silence about the Kyôgen, a comic sketch played in a Noh performance, is surprising; his attitude to Buddhism is ambiguous; his essay about the Noh has a specific literary quality. The adage of Zeami, founder of the Noh, quoted in the Claudel's Journal, throws light on the process of assimilation by his Catholic vision of oriental philosophy. Finally, we show the impact of the Noh on his plays written in Japan, like La Femme et son ombre (1922), and on his “dramatic oratorio,” a genre inaugurated in 1927. The Noh is sublimated in his Christian world. Claudel, a cosmopolitan author who aims at universality, after having penetrated the world of the Noh, integrates it in his creative practice, according to his own aesthetic and spiritual conviction

The contemporary society of the United States of America is becoming an increasingly stressful environment to live in. Our rapid advances and developments in virtual, electronic, and high-speed technology have led us to a lifestyle that operates more quickly. However, our attachment to such a face-paced lifestyle has unfortunately led us towards an increasingly stressful lifestyle. This research focuses on identifying our current society's perceptual outlook and illustrating how the practice of mindfulness can help reduce the anxieties, struggles, and mental flaws which cloud our perception. The intent of this thesis is to show how the practice of mindfulness is beneficial towards our mental health. The practice of mindfulness originated within the Buddhist tradition and has evolved into a new area of interest in the fields of mental health, psychology, philosophy, and humanities. Also, the connection between the practice of mindfulness, and the practice of authentic creativity, as demonstrated in playing the piano, is illuminated within this research. Authentic creativity thus serves as an enlightening metaphor for the elusive practice of mindfulness, and creates a more vivid understanding of the concept of mindfulness. For this thesis I have conducted a literature review in the areas of philosophy, religion, aesthetics and cognitive science. Also, I am actively participating in my research by personally practicing mindfulness and piano. Part of my methodology involves critical thinking on the personal level as I am writing journal entries about my views and thoughts concerning these processes.
