Gasimov, Rustam Rauf. "Modification of the Dykstra-Parsons method to incorporate Buckley-Leverett displacement theory for waterfloods." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2612.

Full text
Abstract:
The Dykstra-Parsons model describes layer 1-D oil displacement by water in multilayered reservoirs. The main assumptions of the model are: piston-like displacement of oil by water, no crossflow between the layers, all layers are individually homogeneous, constant total injection rate, and injector-producer pressure drop for all layers is the same. Main drawbacks of Dykstra-Parsons method are that it does not take into account Buckley-Leverett displacement and the possibility of different oil-water relative permeability for each layer. A new analytical model for layer 1-D oil displacement by water in multilayered reservoir has been developed that incorporates Buckley-Leverett displacement and different oilwater relative permeability and water injection rate for each layer (layer injection rate varying with time). The new model employs an extensive iterative procedure, thus requiring a computer program. To verify the new model, calculations were performed for a two-layered reservoir and the results compared against that of numerical simulation. Cases were run, in which layer thickness, permeability, oil-water relative permeability and total water injection rate were varied. Main results for the cases studied are as follows. First, cumulative oil production up to 20 years based on the new model and simulation are in good agreement. Second, model water breakthrough times in the layer with the highest permeability-thickness product (kh) are in good agreement with simulation results. However, breakthrough times for the layer with the lowest kh may differ quite significantly from simulation results. This is probably due to the assumption in the model that in each layer the pressure gradient is uniform behind the front, ahead of the front, and throughout the layer after water breakthrough. Third, the main attractive feature of the new model is the ability to use different oil-water relative permeability for each layer. However, further research is recommended to improve calculation of layer water injection rate by a more accurate method of determining pressure gradients between injector and producer.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the use of newly-developed survival analysis tools for credit scoring. Credit scoring techniques are currently used by financial institutions to estimate the probability of a customer defaulting on a loan by a predetermined time in the future. While a number of classification techniques are currently used, banks are now becoming more concerned with estimating the lifetime of the loan rather than just the probability of default. Difficulties arise when using standard statistical techniques due to the presence of censoring in the data. Survival analysis, originating from medical and engineering fields, is an area of statistics that typically deals with censored lifetime data. The theoretical developments in this thesis revolve around linear regression for censored data, in particular the Buckley-James method. The Buckley-James method is analogous to linear regression and gives estimates of the mean expected lifetime given a set of explanato ry variables. The first development is a measure of fit for censored regression, similar to the classical r-squared of linear regression. Next, the variable-reduction technique of stepwise selection is extended to the Buckley-James method. For the last development, the Buckley-James algorithm is altered to incorporate non-linear regression methods such as neural networks and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). MARS shows promise in terms of predictive power and interpretability in both simulation and empirical studies. The practical section of the thesis involves using the new techniques to predict the time to default and time to repayment of unsecured personal loans from a database obtained from a major Australian bank. The analyses are unique, being the first published work on applying Buckley-James and related methods to a large-scale financial database.

Narayanan, Anne Michelle. "Foraging distances and forager population sizes of the desert termite Gnathamitermes tubiformans (Buckley) (Isoptera: Termitidae)." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2762.

Full text
Abstract:
The desert termite Gnathamitermes tubiformans and its unique foraging tubes are a common fixture in rangelands across Arizona, New Mexico, northern Mexico, and Texas. Although it is a native species and has thrived for millions of years, recent droughts have made its activity more visible and raised questions about its impact on vegetation. Since G. tubiformans prefers grasses as food, there has been a concern about competition between livestock and termites. Monitoring of desert termite activity was conducted through two experiments focusing on foraging distances and forager population sizes. The foraging distances experiment used circular grids in 5 m x 5 m plots to map the movement of marked G. tubiformans released from the center of the grid. Analyses showed no significant correlations between distances moved and abundance or type of vegetation. Movement of marked termites did not favor any compass directions. The second experiment used a mark-recapture estimation model to predict G. tubiformans forager populations in 5 m x 5 m plots. Linear regression analyses showed a significant positive correlation between size of the forager population and amount of total vegetation. In addition, linear regression analyses showed a significant positive correlation between total estimated number of collected termites during early recruitment and amount of vegetation cover, specifically grasses. Desertification of rangelands used by G. tubiformans and livestock is a worry with few known solutions. Elucidating answers to this problem involves ferreting out the sources of the degradation. The results of this thesis shed light on the role G. tubiformans plays in its habitat, and infer that degraded habitats with low amounts of vegetation will exhibit low termite populations.

ROWE, Noel Michael. "THE WILL OF THE POEM: Religio-Imaginative Variations in the Poetry of James McAuley, Francis Webb, and Vincent Buckley." University of Sydney, English, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/404.

Full text
Abstract:
While considering the work of James McAuley, Francis Webb and Vincent Buckley, this thesis concentrates on the religious character of their poetry. Since it assumes that religious language is primarily metaphorical (as distinct from dogmatic), the thesis describes the poetry by way of its religio-imaginative relationships and structures. James McAuley's poetry is religious, not so much because it is Catholic, as because it voyages between despair and hope, believing always in the reasoned will. Francis Webb's poetry, continually discovering glory in dereliction, dramatises the revelatory and redeeming power of the rejected ones - and so works within the 'Suffering Servant' model of 'Isaiah'. While Vincent Buckley's poetry gradually abandons Catholic language in favour of its own 'idiom of sensation', the religious quality of that sensation is discovered more in liminal than in paradisal possibilities - in the way 'holy spaces' are always in some sense expatriate ones. Since each of these poets belongs in the period of Vatican II Catholicism, the thesis next relates their work to that context. Here, however, it searches for imaginative connections and disconnections by setting up its comparison on the basis, not of dogmas, but of models. Finally, the thesis interprets Webb's 'Eyre All Alone' as a search for renewed religious language, returning to its opening assumption that religious language is primarily metaphorical.

Abstract:
In this essay the main aim is to consider Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials with its female protagonist as a Bildungsroman. The principal source of the study is Jerome Buckley’s Season of Youth – The Bildungsroman from Dickens to Golding. Buckely’s presentation of the significant characteristics of the Bildungsroman will be applied to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials in order to explore if these characteristics are present, modified or not, in the trilogy.   The second aim is to investigate how His Dark Materials relates to the patterns of the hero’s journey. In order to approach this question, Joseph Campbell’s work The Hero with a Thousand Faces is applied as a main source.    Since most material concerning both the Bildungsroman and the hero’s journey are from a male point of view and concern males, the female perspective will be represented by Susan Fraiman and Linda Wagner who both write about females and the bildung narrative.   In the section called The Story of Lyra, the trilogy is summarized briefly in order to give the reader a chance to understand what the trilogy is about. In the conclusion, Lyra’s development and (hero)-journey are discussed.     The final claim of the study is that His Dark Materials can be considered a Bildungsroman and the patterns of the hero journey are found in the story about Lyra, but with some differences from her male counterparts.

Abstract:
Sexuality education has been introduced into the South African syllabus, on a very elementary level, in the Life Orientation learning area of Outcomes- Based Education widely known as Curriculum 2005. Unfortunately outcomes based education ends in Grade 9, leaving learners from Grade 10 -12 with the old syllabus that includes academic subjects only. Very few schools follow a sexuality education programme in Grades 10 - 12 on their own initiative, because it is not compulsory in these grades. The Health Promoting Schools' policies do not include a comprehensive sexuality education programme outline as yet, but when the life-skills approach that is taught in Life Orientation is considered, many similarities in these approaches are identified. Therefore, sexuality education should not be purely factual, but should be taught in conjunction with important life-skills. The two skills investigated in this study are the ability for adolescents to identify and avoid risk behaviour and to be able to make more responsible decisions. Two schools in the Bronkhorstspruit area were identified to take part in this project. School A has implemented a comprehensive sexuality education programme for all its learners and School B has not. The results of the data collected from the questionnaire completed by 100 respondents from the two schools indicated that those from School A had a significantly higher level of knowledge regarding sexuality and appeared to have far better life-skills than the respondents from School B. There was, however, no indication that that this knowledge affected their behaviour in any way. This doesn't mean, though, that the programme has been unsuccessful because the programme doesn't only teach abstinence, but also various methods of precaution. The long-term effect of comprehensive sexuality education has not yet been established because there are so few schools implementing it the way it should be and it is currently not implemented at a young enough age. Unhealthy behaviour patterns, reinforced by years of traditions and taboos, as well as the contradicting information given through the media, cannot be changed overnight. The process of intensive comprehensive sexuality education has only started in South Africa and, with time, a change in the behaviour patterns of adolescents and adults is anticipated.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic effectiveness of formocresol and Portland cement as pulp dressing agents in carious primary teeth. Sixty eight primary mandibular molars of 52 children between 5 and 9 years old were criteriously selected. The teeth were randomly assigned to formocresol or Portland cement groups, and treated by a conventional pulpotomy technique. After coronal pulp removal and hemostasis, in the formocresol group (34 teeth), a cotton pellet, soaked in the solution, was placed for 5 minutes over the pulp stumps and then the pulp chamber was filled with zinc oxide-eugenol paste. In the other group (34 teeth), an 1 mm-thick paste of Portland cement was placed over the pulp stumps. All the teeth were restored with reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol base and resin modified glass ionomer cement. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were recorded at 3, 6 and 12-month follow-up. The sixty eight teeth were available for 3 and 6-month follow-up; however, at 12-month follow-up appointment, 6 teeth could not be assessed (4 teeth exfoliated and 2 children had their address changed). No signs of clinical failure were observed at all follow-up appointments in both group. The radiographic evaluation revealed only one case of internal resorption detected at 3-month follow-up in the formocresol group. Dentine bridge was detected in 2 teeth in the Portland cement group. Statistically significant difference was only observed between both groups when assessing tooth crown discoloration and pulp canal obliteration, which were observed in all teeth treated with Portland cement at all follow-up appointments. Portland cement may serve as an effective substitute of formocresol in primary molar pulpotomies. Although our results are very encouraging, further studies and longer follow-up assessment are needed in order to determine the safety clinical indication of Portland cement.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to compare the clinical, radiographic and microscopic effectiveness of formocresol (FC), calcium hydroxide (CH) and trioxide mineral aggregate (MTA) as pulp dressing agents in carious primary teeth. Forty-five primary mandibular molars of 23 children between 5 and 9 years old were treated by conventional pulpotomy technique. The teeth were randomly assigned to the experimental (CH and MTA) or control (FC) groups. After coronal pulp removal and hemostasis, remaining pulp tissue was covered with a MTA paste or CH powder in the experimental groups. In the control group, diluted FC was placed over the pulp tissue with a cotton pellet for 5 minutes and removed; the pulp tissue was covered then with zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) paste. All the teeth were restored with reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol base and resin modified glass ionomer cement. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were recorded at 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30-month follow-up. During the assessments, the teeth in the regular exfoliation period, as well as those considered as treatment failures were extracted and further processed for microscopic analysis. Serial sections were performed in the bucco-lingual direction and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Microscopic analysis was performed as a description of the most remarkable phenomena in the remaining pulp tissue. Through clinical and radiographic results, success rates of 100%, 35.7% and 100% for FC, CH and MTA were found, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed regarding to the presence of internal resorption, inter-radicular bone destruction, mobility and fistula for CH group (p < 0.05). Microscopic analysis revealed the presence of intense inflammatory infiltrate and mineralized tissue deposition, which was irregular throughout the root canal, in the FC group. As far as MTA group, dentin-like mineralized material deposition obliterating the root canal, and central areas filled by loose conjunctive tissue with several blood vessels were noticed. CH group presented, in most of the sections, extensive necrotic areas both in pulp chamber and root canal. Other sections revealed the presence of extensive reactive dentin barrier, which obliterated the coronal opening of the root canal, and a discrete chronic inflammatory infiltrate. MTA may serve as an effective substitute of FC in primary molar pulpotomies. However, CH seems to be a technique sensitive-material and therefore not indicated for pulpotomies of primary teeth.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic effectiveness of formocresol, calcium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide preceded by an anti-inflammatory medicine: Otosporin® as pulp dressing agents in carious primary teeth. Forty-five primary mandibular molars of 35 children between 5 and 9 years old were carefully selected. The teeth were randomly assigned to formocresol, calcium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide proceeded of anti-inflammatory medicine groups, and treated by a conventional pulpotomy technique in a single session. After coronal pulp removal and hemostasia, in formocresol group, a cotton pellet, soaked in the solution, was placed for 5 minutes over the pulp stumps and the chamber was filled with zinc oxide-eugenol paste. For the group of calcium hydroxide, the powder was accommodated over the pulp stumps with the aid of a sterile door amalgamation. In the third group a cotton pellet, soaked in Otosporin® was placed for 5 minutes over the pulp stumps and then the calcium hydroxide powder was accommodated over the pulp stumps with the aid of a sterile door amalgamation. All the teeth were restored with reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol base and resin modified glass ionomer cement (Vitremer®). Clinical and radiographic evaluations were recorded at 3, 6 and 12-month follow-up. Only 43 of 45 teeth were available for 3 and 6 month follow-up due to withdrawal of 2 children. But at 6 month follow-up 2 teeth of the calcium hydroxide group need to be extracted because clinical failure. At 12 month follow-up, 7 teeth could not be assessed (3 teeth naturally exfoliate and 4 teeth need to be extracted because clinical failure). No sign of clinical or radiographic failure was observed in the formocresol group in all periods. The other groups of the study revealed internal resorption already at 3 month follow-up, as well as the presence of dentin barrier was also observed that time already, and calcium hydroxide group was the only one to show clinical failure. The use of an anti-inflammatory medicine seems to help a larger index of clinical success when the use of calcium hydroxide for pulpotomies in primary teeth, because this seems to be a extremely sensitive technique.

The secondary recovery of petroleum is usually performed with injection of water through an oil reservoir to keep the oil pressure for the exploration. In order to make the exploration profitable, the extraction cost must be less than the financial return, which means that the simulation of the exploration process is extremely relevant. In this work, the Burgers- and- Buckley-Leverett problems are studied seeking a two-phase displacement in porous media. The flow is considered incompressible and capillary effects are ignored. In order to analyze the problem, it was necessary to use the theory of conservation law in a spatial variable. Weak solutions, which can be understood as shock or rarefaction waves, are studied with the entropy condition, so that only the physically correct solutions are considered. Some classical numerical methods, which can be seen as conservative schemes of three points, are studied, among them the Lax-Friedrichs (LF) and Lax-Wendroff (LW) methods. A composite scheme, called LWLF-k, is tested using LF and LW methods, being respected the CFL condition, with satisfactory results. In order to validate the numerical schemes, we consider analytical solutions of the Burgers-and-Buckley-Leverett equations. Was also made a comparison with TVDs methods with flux limiters, obtaining satisfactory results. We emphasize that to the best of our knowledge, the LWLF-4 scheme has never been used to solve the Buckley-Leverett equation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This report contains the first step towards a complete, fully autonomous, robust bucket fill regulator for a wheel loader working with gravel materials.

The bucket fill procedure is the most critical part of the work cycle of a wheel loader. It is a task that has a long learning curve and also is weary, even for experienced drivers. The automation of it could therefore have a big impact on the cost effectiveness for wheel loaders and for the comfort of the drivers.

In this report, a suggestion for the complete solution of an automatic bucket fill regulator is presented. A regulator prototype is also constructed with a Volvo L120F as the base. The scope for the prototype is limited to one type of gravel material and quite optimal conditions for the wheel loader, but the complete solution is kept in mind throughout the synthesis. The constructed regulator is prepared for expansion, but the implementation and field testing is limited to the scope.

Abstract:
The question of how to integrate idioms into standard theories of grammar has been a matter of investigation since at least the beginning of generative grammar. Idioms are uniquely positioned at the interface between the lexicon and the syntax, demonstrating properties of both words and phrases. On the one hand, idioms behave like stored units, arbitrary correspondences between sound and meaning that must simply be memorized by speakers of the language. In this way, they are similar to words, which have long been recognized as arbitrary sound-meaning pairs (cf. Saussure (1986)'s arbitrariness of the sign). On the other hand, idioms in the traditional sense are multiword units, often with some degree of syntactic flexibility, ranging from tense inflection (e.g. Eli kicked the bucket yesterday vs. I'm pretty sure Eli's going to kick the bucket tomorrow) to passivizability (e.g. Lisa spilled the beans vs. The beans were spilled (by Lisa)), and beyond. This places idioms in the purview of the syntax, where the combination and manipulation of multiword units is typically assumed to take place. Idioms, then, bridge the gap between the lexicon and the syntax, challenging traditional assumptions about grammar. This dissertation provides a proposal for dealing with just such issues. I provide an account of idiomatic representations that is consistent with theoretical and empirical research in the field. I explore what kinds of structures are licensed to have special idiomatic interpretations, and I present novel experimental and corpus results that bear on the issue of how idioms are represented. Ultimately, I argue that the structural requirement model alone is able to sufficiently account for the data.

Buckley, Morgan. "Creative performer agency in the collaborative compositional process." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/278870.

Abstract:
The early-twentieth-century culture in western art music of idolizing the composer as the autonomous creative genius has been challenged by recent developments across musicology and creativity research literature. The composer’s music is now regarded as the product of a collaborative network, influenced by all who come into contact with it—first and foremost the performer. Yet, the nature of the performer’s creative impact on the compositional process remains under-explored. This thesis is centred on a qualitative artistic research project, designed to identify and critically evaluate the prospective extent and scope of creative performer agency; it aims to ascertain how a typical lack of familiarity with the instrument may affect the composer’s creative practice, and to reveal key factors that shape the nature and the consequences of composer-performer interaction and collaboration. It proceeds by commissioning new works for guitar from a range of composers for different performers, and by documenting and analysing the processes of collaboration that result. This research agenda challenges the perception of distinct creative roles that remains resilient in present-day cultural understandings and discourse. The findings are intended to broaden understanding of contemporary collaborative practices in the compositional process for the guitar and generalize to the guitar repertoire of the long twentieth century, during which the majority of substantial works were composed in collaboration. The thesis also contributes to a developing and generalizable framework of practice-led research literature that analyses music-making by recognizing the multiple loci and their interactions that underpin all aspects of the creative processes. Chapter 1 discusses the establishment of the creative hegemony of the composer and its opposing currents across disciplines from the late romantic period to the late twentieth century. Chapter 2 comprises an indicative chronology of select collaborations in the long twentieth-century guitar repertoire and an overview of relevant practice-led research projects in performance studies. Ethnographic methodologies are reviewed in Chapter 3 and the fieldwork commissions are analysed in Chapters 4 and 5. Finally, Chapter 6 comprises an evaluation of the performer’s creative agency and its significance when placed in broader frameworks of contemporary guitar practices, contemporary composition across instrumentations, generalizing to historical guitar collaboration and its implications for creativity research.

Abstract:
For many years, buckets have been equipped with teeth to help penetrate, gouge and breakout materials. The teeth also works as wear parts and can be replaced when they are worn down, and thus increase the service life of the bucket. The first teeth were made like a one-piece design and to replace such tooth required both cutting and welding which was very time consuming. Today’s modern teeth consist of an adapter that is welded on the bucket and a tooth with a locking system that makes it easy to replace the tooth when needed. The teeth on the market today are cast, which means that the hardness cannot be guaranteed through the whole cast and the hardest tooth is measured to be around 500 HB.   SSABs brand Hardox is the toughest steel on the market. It is extremely wear resistant and has a three time longer service life than ordinary steel. To increase the use of Hardox the possibility to manufacture bucket teeth of three or more plates are examined.   This thesis has applied a product development process to mainly develop concepts of the locking system that holds the adapter and tooth together. The locking systems main requirement is to be hammerless, meaning that it is not hammered in, due to the high risk of injury and longer assembly time. Apart from, the geometry of the tooth will be developed to give a better wear resistance.   The result is a tooth with at least twice as long service life than the cast competitors and two concepts of locking system. Both locking systems meet the requirement of being hammerless and the sustainability is ensured with calculations of shear force. The geometry of the tooth is design to be self-sharpening, which allows it to stay sharper throughout its service life. Wear test using DEM analysis assure a positive outcome.

Abstract:
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the nonlinear responses of a clamped-clamped buckled beam to a variety of external harmonic excitations and internal resonances. We assume that the beam geometry is uniform and its material is homogeneous. We initially buckle the beam by an axial force beyond the critical load of the first buckling mode, and then we apply a transverse harmonic excitation that is uniform over its span. The beam is modeled according to the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and small strains and moderate rotation approximations are assumed. We derive the equation of motion governing the nonlinear transverse planar vibrations and associated boundary conditions using the extended Hamilton's principle. The governing equation is a nonlinear integral-partial-differential equation in space and time that possesses quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. A closed-form solution for such equations is not available and hence we seek approximate solutions. We use perturbation methods to investigate the slow dynamics in the neighborhood of an equilibrium configuration. A Galerkin approximation is used to discretize the nonlinear partial-differential equation governing the beam's response and obtain a set of nonlinearly coupled ordinary-differential equations governing the time evolution of the response. We based our theory on a multi-mode Galerkin discretization. To investigate the large-amplitude dynamics, we use a shooting method to numerically integrate the discretized equations and obtain periodic orbits. The stability and bifurcations of these periodic orbits are investigated using Floquet theory. We solve the nonlinear buckling problem to determine the buckled configurations as a function of the applied axial load. We compare the static buckled configurations obtained from the discretized equations with the exact ones. We find out that the number of modes retained in the discretization has a significant effect on these static configurations. We consider three cases: primary resonance, subharmonic resonance of order one-half of the first vibration mode, and one-to-one internal resonance between the first and second modes. We obtain interesting dynamics, such as phase-locked and quasiperiodic motions, resulting from a Hopf bifurcation, snapthrough motions, and a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations leading to chaos. To validate our theoretical results, we ran an experiment, which is a modified version of the experiment designed by Kreider and Nayfeh. We find that the obtained theoretical results are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results. In the case of one-to-one internal resonance, we report, theoretically and experimentally, energy transfer between the first mode, which is externally excited, and the second mode.

Full text
Abstract:
Vibrations resulting from earthquakes, machinery, or unanticipated shocks may be very damaging and costly to structures. To avoid such damage, designers need a structural system that can dissipate the energy caused by these vibrations. Using elastically buckled struts may be a viable means to reduce the harmful effects of unexpected vibrations. Post-buckled struts can support high axial loads and also act as springs in a passive vibration isolation system by absorbing or dissipating the energy caused by external excitation. When a base excitation is applied, the buckled strut may act to reduce the dynamic force transmitted to the system, thus reducing the structural damage to the system. Several models of buckled and pre-bent struts are examined with different combinations of parameters and end conditions. The models include pinned or fixed columns supporting loads above their buckling load, and columns with an initial curvature supporting various loads. The varying parameters include external damping, internal damping, and stiffness. The columns will be subjected to simple harmonic motion applied at the base or to a multi-frequency base excitation. The response of each model is measured by the deflection transmissibility of the supported load over a large range of frequencies. Effective models reduce the motion of the supported load over a large range of frequencies.

Abstract:
There is a need for reliable methods to determine approximate solutions of nonlinear continuous systems. Recently, it has been proved that finite-degree-of-freedom Galerkin-type discretization procedures applied to some distributed-parameter systems may fail to predict the correct dynamics. By contrast, direct procedures yield reliable approximate solutions. Starting from these results and extending some of these concepts and procedures, we compare the outcomes of these two approaches (the Galerkin discretization and the direct application of a reduction method to the original governing equations) with experimental results. The nonlinear planar vibrations of a buckled beam around its first buckling mode shape are investigated. Frequency-response curves characterizing single-mode responses of the beam under a primary resonance are generated using both approaches and contrasted with experimentally obtained frequency-response curves. It is shown that discretization leads to erroneous quantitative as well as qualitative results in certain ranges of the buckling level, whereas the direct approach predicts the correct dynamics of the system.
