Abstract:
This study aims to evaluate the commodified brother-sister relationship in Early Modern drama. It examines three different samples from three major playwrights of this time period: Isabella and Claudio in William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure (1603), Charles and Susan in Thomas Heywood’s A Woman Killed with Kindness (1603), and Giovanni and Annabella in John Ford’s Tis Pity She’s a Whore (1632). The three aforementioned cases are closely evaluated through a Marxist-feminist lens. The study finds out that the brothers in the three examined plays are not very different since they all encourage their sisters to sacrifice their chastity to achieve some sort of personal interest. Interestingly enough, the sisters vary in their responses to their brothers’ requests of offering their bodies to help their brothers. Obviously, Shakespeare offers the ideal version of a sister who does everything in her power to save a brother. Yet, she refuses to offer her body in return to his freedom in spite of her brother’s desperate calls to offer her virginity to Angelo to save the former’s life. Susan of Heywood is also similar to Isabella of Shakespeare since she refuses to sell herself in return to the money needed to save her brother. However, Ford offers the ugliest version of a brother-sister relationship. The brother wants to have a love affair with his sister who yields to his sexual advances and eventually gets pregnant.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Natural-killer/T-cell lymphoma (NKTL) is a rare subset of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is more prevalent in Asia than in the West. We report a case of two brothers who were diagnosed with NKTL and died of their disease at 23 and 37 years old respectively, and further investigations performed to determine the underlying genetic basis to their disease. Methods Both patients were recruited into the Singapore lymphoma study where retrieval of their clinical data and biospecimens had been approved by the Singhealth instititutional review board. Their clinical courses are described using information from electronic medical records. For the older brother we extracted tumor DNA from a patient-derived xenograft (PDX), and DNA from a buccal swab and peripheral blood (PB) sample. In the younger brother DNA was extracted from normal and tumor tissue from archived formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) samples. DNA from the unaffected mother, older brother and paternal aunt were obtained from PB and buccal swab samples. We performed whole exome sequencing (WES) on the younger affected brother's tumor, the older affected brother's, mother's and unaffected brother's blood sample. Subsequent analysis of variants took into account autosomal recessive (AR), X-linked recessive (XR) and autosomal dominant (AD) inheritance models. Candidate genes are validated using Sanger sequencing. Microarray on the older affected brother and 12 sporadic NKTL cases were analyzed. Results The older affected brother was 35 years old when he presented with left nasal blockage in March 2013. He was diagnosed with stage IIA NKTL and treated with 4 cycles of bortezomib-GIFOX as part of a clinical trial followed by radiotherapy to the nasal region. He had primary refractory disease and was further treated with 4 cycles of SMILE followed by high dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDC/ASCT). He progressed and received off-label ruxolitinib, and everolimus/HDAC inhibitor as part of a clinical trial. He then had radiotherapy to an ulcerating penile lesion before he died of progressive disease 27months after diagnosis. The younger affected brother was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with NKTL in 1998. He received 6 cycles of CHOP with intravenous high-dose methotrexate and intrathecal methotrexate and went into remission. Three years later, he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia and 6 years later, he had a relapse of NKTL for which he received ESHAP, TBI and allogeneic bone marrow transplant. He died of transplant related complication 6 years after diagnosis. They both have an older unaffected brother. Their father died of non-malignant condition in his fifties and their mother remains well. They have no other relatives with hematologic malignancy. We have identified several candidate variants and genes on WES that are being validated and functional studies are ongoing. GEP shows 234 genes that are significantly upregulated in the affected brother's tumor compared to 12 sporadic NKTL tumors including p53 and 12 genes that were significantly downregulated including CTLA4 and virus entry pathways. Conclusion: We describe a case of two brothers with a rare lymphoma and the ongoing efforts in elucidating the genetic basis of their disease. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study of its kind to be presented. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
This article explores the changing Southeast Asian Muslim diaspora from the colonial to the postcolonial era. Based on the ethnographic and oral accounts of two Muslim brothers coming from the same Southeast Asian family, and particularly focusing on the diasporic experience of the elder brother’s migration from Pakistan to Hong Kong and finally to Britain, the article shows how the European colonial expansion in Southeast Asia altered the paths of the Muslim diaspora. By comparing the experience of the elder brother in Britain with his younger brother in Hong Kong, this article suggests the importance of agency, in the sense that one’s life history, personal encounter, and different interpretations of Islam are vital determinants as regards their paths in the diaspora and their evaluations toward non-Muslim host societies in both the West and the East.

Abstract:
The article is an attempt to discuss Dziga Vertov’s influence on French filmmakers, in particular on Jean Vigo. This influence may have resulted from Vertov’s younger brother, Boris Kaufman, who worked in France in the 1920s — 1930s and was the cinematographer for all of Vigo’s films. This brother-brother relationship contributed to an important circulation of avant-garde ideas, cutting-edge cinematic techniques, and material objects across Europe. The brothers were in touch primarily by correspondence. According to Boris Kaufman, during his early career in France, he received instructions from his more experienced brothers, Dziga Vertov and Mikhail Kaufman, who remained in the Soviet Union. In addition, Vertov intended to make his younger brother become a French kinok. Also, À propos de Nice, Vigo’s and Kaufman’s first and most “vertovian” film, was shot with the movable hand camera Kinamo sent by Vertov to his brother. As a result, this French “symphony of a Metropolis” as well as other films by Vigo may contain references to Dziga Vertov’s and Mikhail Kaufman’s The Man with a Movie Camera based on framing and editing. In this perspective, the research deals with transnational film circulations appealing to the example of the impact of Russian avant-garde cinema on Jean Vigo’s films.

In media convergence environment and digitization of media, one of the Brazilian television trends has been the adoption of transmídias strategies, especially in formats with great appeal to the interactivity, as the reality show. Based in Fechine and Figueirôa (2011), we understand the transmediation as a production model that is based on the "repetition, pervasiveness and distribution in different technological platforms (TV, cinema, internet, mobile, etc.) content associated whose pivot is anchored in participatory culture stimulated by digital means". Based on this concept and taking into account the convergence culture scene, described by Jenkins (2008), this research aims to analyze the strategies transmídias in Big Brother Brazil, main reality show on Brazilian television, broadcast by Rede Globo since 2002. Based in audiovisual studies, convergence and transmediation, the paper proposes a categorization strategies and transmídias content of Big Brother Brazil based on systematic observation of the 2013 and 2014 editions.

Abstract:
Television broadcasting companies sustain their business by delivering audiences to advertisers. Knowing audience behavior allows them to better develop the television offer, to attain higher audiences and to increase the value marketers are willing to pay for televiewers attention. This research approaches a reality show television programme which aims to explore the lives of other people in an entertaining manner for the viewer. Portuguese Big Brother ended up with SIC's hegemony over the portuguese television market and helped to consolidate TVI's schedule based on popular information and national drama fiction (novella) which turned the third television player into the national leader. Today these two biggest broadcasting companies are again battling over leadership of primetime's ratings. Big Brother VIP was the way that TVI found to compete against the well succeeded SIC's novella Dancin' Days. This study allowed to access the way the televiewer reacts to the show and made it possible to understand that the consumer wants to gratify its authenticity and voyeuristic needs. He/she likes comedy and social interaction between contestants and abominates manipulation. The results allowed to understand the regular viewer's behavior, what makes people watch the eviction and nominating shows and what influences the gratifications sought by watching the show. There were obtained four viewer profiles as well and the ideal contestant was defined as loyal, sociable and funny, concerned with others well-being, curious, ambitious, family-oriented, don't depends on others to be happy, humble, healthy, ascetic and denotes egalitarian tendencies.

Warnock, Jeanie E. "Kind tyranny: Brother-sister relationships in Renaissance drama." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9116.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on the social, literary, and psychological significance of the brother-sister relationship to a broad range of Renaissance tragedy and tragicomedy. After a brief historical analysis of siblings, the thesis considers the brother-sister relationship as an important means for dramatists to explore questions of identity, of gender conflict, and of differing understandings of family. It also examines the relationship as a developing literary tradition in the drama of the Stuart period, a tradition which culminates in the works of John Ford. The first half of the study surveys a large range of non-Shakespearean revenge tragedy and tragicomedy. In revenge tragedy, violent brother-sister strife serves as a symbol of the self in turmoil, as an image of a disordered family and society, and as a focal point for tension over the nature of women. Brothers also subvert traditional family roles in their relationships with their sisters. The avenging brother and sister, joined in shared loyalty to their house, mount a legitimate challenge to the authority of husband and king; pandar brothers become diabolical inversions of father and husband. Proceeding to tragicomedy, the thesis analyzes the brother as a figure of illegitimate authority and considers the privileged position gained by royal sisters, whose noble blood renders them the equal of their brothers. The latter half of the dissertation reinterprets the plays of John Webster and John Ford. In The Duchess of Malfi, the royal siblings' similarity, close blood tie, and high rank overturn gender difference and affirm the intimate connection between the sexes. The study considers the importance of blood family to the Duchess' self-conception and examines Ferdinand's attempts to create identity by usurping the place of his sister's husband. Ford's two plays 'Tis Pity She's A Whore and The Fancies Chaste and Noble stand as the culmination of dramatic treatments of idealized and antagonistic brother-sister relationships alike. Both works contrast the opposing nature of physical and familial love and elevate asexual love above sexual passion, presenting a sibling tie which undermines the bond between husband and wife.

Abstract:
Introduction: Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (fALS) represent 5-10% of ALS patients. Different mutations in the N-terminal motor or coiled-coil domains of the kinesin family member 5A (KIF5A) cause Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Type 10 (HSP10), Charcot-Marie-Tooth 2 (CMT2), Neonatal Intractable Myoclonus and more recently described fALS Type 25. Previous described phenotypes are very similar to the sporadic type, except from the long course of disease. Methods: We describe four Brazillian patients, under clinical follow-up on two Neuromuscular services with genetic diagnosis of fALS25. Results: Four diferent fALS25 are described. Two brothers and two unrelated patients, with distinct features, three males and one female, age range from 72 to 24; age of onset ranged from 62 to 22. The genetic mutations were the following: simple heterozygous pathogenic variant c.1651C>G (p. Leu551Val), simple heterozygous pathogenic variant c.2953G>A (p. Gly985Ser) and pathogenic variant c.484C>T (p.Arg162Trp); all of KIF5A gene (fALS25). Only one patient presented with similar phenoptype and age of onset as sporadic ALS (sALS), the two brothers presented the symptoms at the ages of 28 and 30, the female patient at 22. All patients still walk without assistence after the diagnosis. All patients showed classic superior and inferior motor neuron involvement signs, but one brother had a mild limb ataxia. The three younger patients had MRI with no specific findings, except from subtle cortical atrophy in one brother, and mild vermis and corpus callosum atrophy on the other brother. Only the female patient had negative familiar history. Conclusions: fALS25 should be suspected in patient with fALS and longer course disease. Mutations KIF5A gene must be remembered either in juvenile form of ALS.

Sultana, Munawar. Two worlds under the same roof: A brief on gender difference in transitions to adulthood. Population Council, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy19.1008.

Full text
Abstract:
Adolescence, a time of transition to adulthood, is different for young men and women in Pakistan; brothers and sisters living under the same roof have different opportunities available in all aspects of life. More young people aged 15–24 live in Pakistan now than at any other time in its history—an estimated 36 million in 2004. Recognizing the dearth of information on the situation of this large group of young people, the Population Council undertook a nationally representative survey from October 2001 to March 2002. The analysis presented in this brief comes from Adolescents and Youth in Pakistan 2001–02: A Nationally Representative Survey. The survey sought information from youth aged 15–24, responsible adults in the household, and other community members in 254 communities. A total of 6,585 households were visited and 8,074 young people were interviewed. This brief concludes that girls face disadvantages, especially in rural areas, and that parents, community, and policymakers need to work together to ensure that girls, like their brothers, are able to make a successful transition to adulthood.
