Abstract:
Abstract This essay draws upon Gwendolyn Brooks’ 49-year correspondence (1944–93) with her editor Elizabeth Lawrence to trace the “publishing knowledges” that Brooks gleaned during her mid-20th-century career with the US firm Harpers & Brothers. First and foremost, their correspondence richly details Brooks’s growth as an experimental poet with a mainstream commercial firm. The aesthetic sociality of their editorial debates fostered also allowed them to explore personal and political intimacies; in this dimension, their correspondence (both the letters’ contents and epistolary form) sheds light on how Brooks and Lawrence navigated the shoals of race, gender, and liberalism in the notoriously patriarchal corporate culture of mid-20th-century US publishing. Finally, the arc of Brooks’s relationship with Lawrence at Harper’s charts is how US publishing transformed from its corporate to conglomerated forms. Taken together, these epistolary threads not only weave African American poetry into the literary history of an era-defining institutional realignment but also they demonstrate how Brooks’ and Lawrence’s cross-racial solidarity and commitment to an anti-corporate poetics comprise a continuum between Brooks’s career in mainstream US publishing and her later years in the Black independent press in the late 1960s. [P]ublishing at Harper’s was a shrewd, tactical choice [that] . . serve[d] Brooks’s evolving ideologies about art and politics.

Abstract:
Gwendolyn Brooks has become the doubly disadvantaged poet, mostly because of her "race" as a black woman, and secondly, by consideration for her gender. Such a double pressure is evident in Brooks's poetry. For her race and culture, Brooks took great pride as well as supports, honors womanhood too. However, Brooks's poetry discusses black consciousness and also exposes the essence of the concerns of black women. The Black women, their psychological state as well as their depressed feelings are portrayed in Brooks's poetry. The goal of Brooks is to show the readers, what African American women should be. The major aspect is that women characters are independent women, who reject the boundaries of the appropriate role, by both the Blacks as well as the general Western society. The suffering and resentment of American blacks, the misery with the strength of ordinary black citizens, is brilliantly pointed out by Brooks. She concentrated through her poems on people in general and women in particular. Although, she depicts African American women as moms, wives, sisters, girlfriends, as well as daughters, in different ways. Undoubtedly, Black female characters for Brooks are still victims of racism, slavery, sexism, exploitation, discrimination, injustice, oppression, and violence.

Abstract:
While the majority of literature written in regard to artist Romaine Brooks has focused on her portraiture of cross-dressing women, I intend to focus on other aspects of her oeuvre which are often neglected. Therefore, I will examine works depicting women produced or exhibited by Brooks during the years 1910 and 1911 when her output was at its most varied. I have divided these works into four different categories: nudes, interior scenes, balcony scenes, and portraits. These paintings prove that while Brooks painted in a traditional fashion, she also subtly challenged the role of women in art and society.

An empirical analysis on the applicability of multigrid techniques to system modeling using system identification techniques is presented. Multigrid with the Toeplitz approximation algorithm is used to model an infinite impulse response (FIR) system with a finite impulse response (FIR) model. Matrix analysis experiments are conducted on the Toeplitz iteration matrix. A comparison of alternative multigrid operators for solving the system modeling problem is presented. The extension of multigrid techniques to system modeling of odd order filters is explored. Computer simulations are developed for analyzing the effectiveness of multigrid techniques in system modeling.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores architectural potential and experience in the theatre of Peter Brook (1925-). The importance of his thought, writings and theatrical creation in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries reaches far beyond the question of theatre. It prepares a ground for exploring the ethical and poetic dimensions of architecture. Refusing to reduce the role of theatre to making 'pictures,' Brook's theatre strives to offer us ephemeral experience in space and to engage us with the power of individual and communal imagination. What is explored and can be learned from Brook's theatre cannot be considered as a 'practical prescription' or methodology, but rather as a call to an incessant quest. It offers an entry to rethinking the role of architecture not as a finished design, but as a phenomenon that emerges through an 'event' and engages its inhabitants and their being in the world. The dissertation, seen through the lens of an architect, embarks on a journey into Brook's theatre in which it unravels crucial concepts from his discourse and theatrical experiments offering insights of great value to architects and architectural creation alike. The idea of "empty space," the relationship between visible and invisible, and the notion of 'Immediate Theatre' resonate throughout the investigation. Along the way, I study three theatrical plays: Orghast at the tombs of the Persian kings at Persepolis and Naqsh-e-Rustam (Iran, 1971); The Mahabharata at the Callet Quarry in Boulbon (France, 1985); and Eleven and Twelve at the theatre of Bouffes du Nord (Paris, 2009). The investigation reveals the unusual approach toward places of performance, the exploratory process of creation, and the audience's involvement in space/time. In the view of this thesis, Brook's theatrical creation invokes an architecture that temporalizes space and recognizes the 'present moment,' immersing its participants in a wholeness of narrative, play and place.

Abstract:
A petrographic study of upper Devonian sandstones (Endicott and Hammond Terranes), Philip Smith Mountains and Arctic quadrangles, Brooks Range, Alaska, shows that the sand-sized detritus was derived from two petrographic provenances. Detrital modes, calculated from point counts of thin sections, show that the provenance for the Devonian clastic wedge (Endicott Terrane) was a recycled orogenic belt with major components of quartz, chert, and lithic fragments. Three petrofacies are distinguished. Their distribution indicates compositional changes vertically and laterally which reflect changing compositions in the source area. A petrographically different provenance supplied the sandstones that overlie the Skajit Limestone (Hammond Terrane). Characterized by high feldspar and abundant volcanic rock fragments, this petrofacies indicates first-cycle deposition close to the source area. A magmatica arc provenance is suggested.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines perspectives of the two influential U.S. think tanks, the Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations, on Turkish foreign policy under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (JDP) from 2002 to 2010. It attempts to analyze the perceptions of the noted institutions about the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy by referencing their reports, articles, interviews and seminars. The study had four aims. First, it aims to analyze the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy in the eyes of the two think tanks. Second, it shows the objective of the two institutions for shaping the framework of the discussions on the United States-Turkey relations and Turkish foreign policy by emphasizing the epistemic community. Third, this thesis intends to clarify divergences and convergences in the perceptions of the two think tanks. Fourth, it indicates the continuity, change and rupture in the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy choices from the viewpoint of the Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations. Consequently, the thesis states that &ldquo
the given framework&rdquo
in the relations between the United States and Turkey has been largely determined by the U.S.&rsquo
activities.

Mueller, Andrew. "“Art Hurts”: Intimacy, Difficulty, and Distance in Gwendolyn Brooks’s “Two Dedications”." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/19301.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine Gwendolyn Brooks’s diptych poems “Two Dedications” from her 1968 collection In the Mecca. Critical accounts of “Two Dedications” cast the poems as fixed oppositions between “frivolous” Western art and inspiring, communal black art. I propose that such binaries are reductive and overlook the intellectual benefits Brooks locates in abstract modernist art. Using Ezra Pound’s theories of modernist difficulty, Walter Benjamin’s concept of artistic “aura,” and the Black Arts Movement (BAM) manifestoes of Ron Karenga and Larry Neal, I argue that Brooks’s poems demonstrate the benefits of both abstract Western art and representational BAM art. Specifically, Brooks suggests that both types of art provide avenues for self-determination and liberation from institutional conventions.

" Log in here to attend this presentation: <a href=""https://ksu.zoom.us/j/93466962336"" target=""_blank"">https://ksu.zoom.us/j/93466962336</a><br /><br /> The last several years have seen community backlash against LGBTQ+-centered events, displays, and literature in libraries. This precedent can make it intimidating to introduce LGBTQ+ programming, especially in towns with conservative populations. However, there are methods that can help organizations find support and get residents comfortable with LGBTQ+ programming. The Brookings Public Library in Brookings, SD began the process of integrating LGBTQ+-centered events into their programming by bringing their community to the forefront. In 2021, Brookings residents were invited to learn, speak, and be involved in LGBTQ+ issues at the BPL’s “Building Inclusive Spaces with our LGBTQ+ Community” panel discussion, which featured LGBTQ+ community leaders, local advocates, and allies. By providing educational resources and queer perspectives, this panel brought residents together to work towards the common goals of educating themselves and collaborating with their queer neighbors to promote inclusivity in their city and state. This presentation will outline examples and impacts of the programs introduced by the Brookings Public Library to serve as a framework for participants interested in implementing LGBTQ+ programming at their own organizations. It will cover methods of easing LGBTQ+ programming into a reluctant community, such as pursuing local partnerships, tailoring programs to community needs, and mitigating the potential for conflict and harm. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of further program ideas and an overview of important resources to turn to when planning LGBTQ+-centered events."

Full text
Abstract:
A special case of the shape from shading problem, applicable to surfaces with unusual reflecting properties, was solved by Rindfleisch (1966). For the special reflectance properties he considered, a profile of the solution surface can be obtained by integrating along predetermined straight lines in the image plane. The general problem was formulated and solved later (Horn, 1970 and 1975). The method of characteristic strip expansion was used originally to solve the nonlinear first-order partial differential image irradiance equation. The reflectance map makes the analysis of the shape from shading algorithm much easier, provided that both light sources and viewer are far away from the scene being viewed (Horn, 1977; Horn and Sjoberg, 1979). Several iterative schemes, mostly based on minimization of some function containing an integral of the brightness error, arose later (Woodham, 1977; Strat, 1979; Ikeuchi and Horn, 1981; Kirk, 1984; Brooks and Horn, 1985; Horn and Brooks, 1986; Kirk, 1987; Frankot and Chellappa, 1988). Abstract:
Abstract Coming into 2021 previous work had identified major potential oil targets throughout the Brookian Campanian Section and in the Kuparuk River Sands of Great Bear Pantheon's (GBP) Talitha and Alkaid units and Theta West leasehold on the North Slope of Alaska which sit immediately adjacent to the Dalton Highway and Tans Alaska Pipeline System approximately 20 miles south of the town of Dead Horse in Prudhoe Bay. These identified targets were based on a combination of previous drilling by ARCO with their Pipeline State 1 well (drilled in 1988) and Alkaid 1 drilled by GBP (drilled in 2015 by Great Bear Petroleum at the time) in addition to 3D seismic owned by GBP. Following Great Bear Petroleum's merger in 2019 with Pantheon Resources to become Great Bear Pantheon and a successful test at the Alkaid 1 well an expanded project of exploration and appraisal wells was launched. This project began with the drilling of the Talitha A exploration well and continued with the Theta West 1 and Alkaid 2 wells. All these wells encountered multiple and significant oil accumulations in the Brookian Campanian Section. A key part of these exploration and appraisal wells was the analysis of sealed at well site and unsealed gently airdried drill cuttings by Rock Volatiles Stratigraphy (RVS) (also known as Volatiles Analysis Service (VAS)) developed by Advanced Hydrocarbon Stratigraphy (AHS). RVS enables the direct measurement of the C1-10 hydrocarbons, water, and several other volatile compounds relevant to evaluating petroleum systems via a gentle extraction, identification, and quantification process on a novel cryo-trap mass spectroscopy system developed in house by AHS. The RVS results have been especially helpful in the analysis of the Brookian Campanian Section given the petrophysically challenging nature of the play, representing an independent measurement relating to hydrocarbons (HC) and water that can be paired with the petrophysics to provide greater confidence in the identification of pay zones. RVS analysis and interpretation is done blind with no additional information beforehand significantly diminishing opportunities for bias in the interpretation of the results before being paired with other datasets. Beyond observations about HC and water content, significant additional information about the petroleum system such as oil quality (API gravity and biological activity), rock/reservoir properties, seals/compartments, and overall strength of the system was provided via RVS. Many of these results were used in the planning of subsequent well site activities like perforations and have been proven accurate in resulting flow tests. When combined with other data like 3D seismic the RVS data enables an immense appreciation of the world class asset that the multiple continuous accumulations in the Brookian Campanian Section of GBP's acreage represents.

Abstract:
This presentation comments on Douglas H. Brooks' paper Asia's infrastructure, trade costs and regional co-operation which discusses topics of trade dynamics within developing Asia. After highlighting Brooks' key points, it covers issues on trade costs, namely, avoidable versus unavoidable "Non-Tariff" trade costs and the reduction of "Non-Tariff" trade costs as a policy objective. Then it presents the implications of a world where each economy achieves "optimal" reductions in "non-tariff" trade costs. This presentation was prepared for the Latin America/Caribbean and Asia/Pacific Economics and Business Association (LAEBA)'s 4th Annual Meeting held in Lima, Peru on June 17th, 2008.
