The research sought to understand the discursive processes that permeated the identity of the Brazilian rock (1985-1990) from the lyrics of these songs on the "hit parade reader" of Bizz magazine. The research had as main source of study the Bizz magazine, which had its August 1985 time period until mid-2007, is considered a major journal for being a rock genre movement of the vehicle in the national and international level and the his long stay in business. Thus, we selected 6 songs for discourse analysis from the 66 copies of the magazine Bizz between the years 1985-1990, during which happens the re-democratization of Brazil, so choosing one every year. In this perspective, the central axis of the research was to try to understand what identity present in the Brazilian rock, taking into account the historical and social context in which these songs were inserted. He attempted to interpret and analyze historically the Brazilian musical context, realizing that the analyzed rock bands built an identity in relation to the political period in which they were inserted (1985-1990). The work addressed the beginning of rock in Brazil in the mid 1950s, with the movement of the Young Guard, through Tropicália, MPB, punk rock and rock in the 80s he was noticed then the spread of the Brazilian rock in the 1980s due to political openness and the democratization process. It was found that with the softened censorship, created a larger space for socialization and impact of rock with the advent of Rock in Rio. The songs analyzed in this research have recognized a cultural identity in relation to the immediate historical context. the authors Stuart Hall were used (2011), Zygmunt Bauman (2005) and Sandra Jatahy Pesavento (1995) to understand the identity of the bands, its conceptual aspects, and also used the authors Michael Maffesoli (2000) and Barbara Rosenwein (2011) to understand the concepts of tribes and communities that formed in the 1980s in the survey, we used the theoretical analysis of the French Discourse, which, according to Eni Orlandi (2005), refers to the practice of language as production of meanings and aims to understand the place of interpretation of the subject and its reality. The Discourse Analysis assists thus in reflection on the social practice, political, ideological and historical aspects, allowing then a thorough approach to the discursive processes. In this sense, the study addressed the letter of the songs as a source for understanding social and ideological sets that permeated the history of Brazil in the democratization period. It was understood, so that the bands studied here created their own cultural identity, through the letters of politicized music and his irreverent character to the 1980s.
A pesquisa procurou compreender os processos discursivos que permearam a identidade do rock brasileiro (1985-1990) a partir das letras das músicas presentes no ―hit parade do leitor‖ da revista Bizz. A pesquisa teve como principal fonte de estudo a revista Bizz, que teve seu período de duração de agosto de 1985 até meados de 2007, sendo considerado um periódico de grande importância por ser um veículo de circulação do gênero rock no âmbito nacional e internacional e pela sua longa permanência em atividade. Assim, foram selecionadas 6 músicas para análise discursiva dentre os 66 exemplares da revista Bizz entre os anos de 1985 a 1990, período no qual ocorre a redemocratização do Brasil, escolhendo assim uma a cada ano. Nessa perspectiva, o eixo central da pesquisa foi procurar compreender qual a identidade presente no rock brasileiro, tendo em conta o contexto histórico e social em que essas músicas foram inseridas. Buscou-se interpretar e analisar historicamente o contexto musical brasileiro, percebendo que as bandas de rock analisadas construíram uma identidade em relação ao período político em que estavam inseridas (1985-1990). O trabalho abordou o início do rock no Brasil em meados de 1950, com o movimento da Jovem Guarda, passando pela Tropicália, a MPB, o punk rock e o rock nos anos 80. Percebeu-se, então, uma difusão maior do rock brasileiro na década de 1980 devido à abertura política e ao processo de redemocratização. Constatou-se que, com a censura amenizada, criou-se um espaço maior de socialização e de repercussão do rock junto ao advento do Rock in Rio. As músicas analisadas nesta pesquisa permitiram constatar uma identidade cultural em relação ao contexto imediato histórico. Foram utilizados os autores Stuart Hall (2011), Zygmunt Bauman (2005) e Sandra Jatahy Pesavento (1995) para compreender a identidade das bandas, seus aspectos conceituais, e também se utilizou os autores Michael Maffesoli (2000) e Bárbara Rosenwein (2011) para entender os conceitos de tribos e de comunidades que se constituíram na década de 1980. Na pesquisa, utilizou-se o referencial teórico da Análise do Discurso de linha francesa, que, segundo Eni Orlandi (2005), se refere à prática da linguagem enquanto produção de sentidos e visa compreender o lugar de interpretação do sujeito e a sua realidade. A Análise do Discurso auxilia, assim, na reflexão a respeito da prática social, dos aspectos políticos, ideológicos e históricos, possibilitando, então, uma abordagem aprofundada dos processos discursivos. Nesse sentido, a pesquisa abordou a letra das músicas como fonte para compreender os conjuntos sociais e ideológicos que permearam a história do Brasil no período de redemocratização. Compreendeu-se, assim, que as bandas aqui estudadas criaram uma identidade cultural própria, através das letras das músicas politizadas e seu caráter irreverente para a década de 1980.

Abstract:
The Victoria Memorial is one of London's best known landmarks, yet its sculptor Thomas Brock (1847-1922) has not been seriously studied. This thesis considers this works in the context of the New Sculpture movement. Brock worked for eight years in the London studio of John Henry Foley, and a further eight completing Foley's unfinished commissions. Meanwhile his own distinctive style was developing, and he was one of the first of his generation (which included Hamo Thomycroft and Alfred Gilbert) to show French influence in such works as Hercules strangling Antaeus (1869), the Snake Charmer (1877) and A Moment of Peril (1880), which was purchased by the Chantrey Fund and helped secure his election as an ARA. A close relationship with Frederic Leighton was established during this period; Leighton modelled his Athlete wrestling with a Python in Brock's studio and made use of Brock's expertise in bronze work. When elected RA in 1891, Brock's diploma work was a bronze bust of Leighton and he later executed the Leighton Memorial in St Paul's Cathedral (1902). Although his ideal marble statues The Genius of Poetry (1891) and Eve (1898) won the praise of the critics, Brock concentrated more on meeting the growing demand for commemorative statues and busts. His style was vigorous and realistic, with an eye for detail and attention to surface, finish and the overall harmony of the sculpture, its pedestal and the proposed site. He was particularly successful with his portrayal of Queen Victoria, his statues for Hove and Worcester being replicated in a dozen cities in Britain and the Empire. In his most important work, the Victoria Memorial, Brock incorporated many New Sculpture allusions. Although it has received a mixed critical reception over the years, as a popular public monument it has stood the test of time. The artistic and technical merits of its sculptor deserve to be more widely recognised, as does his contribution to the New Sculpture movement generally.

Abstract:
With the advocacy for sustainable construction on the rise, use of timber as the main building material is being championed in large-scale construction projects. While the advancement of engineered timber products is addressing some issues that previously limited the use of wood in high-rise construction, there are still challenges such as fire and weather safety, code compliance and negative public perceptions. One main gap in the available resources is the lack of a comprehensive and detailed case study of a high-rise project with wood as the main construction material to capture constraints and innovations necessary in creating success, which has formed the direction of this research. This thesis is focused on documenting a case study of the Brock Commons project, an 18 storey, hybrid timber-concrete residential high-rise located at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, which is the tallest hybrid timber building in the world. The overall research objective was to identify and document the delivery of this innovative project, with a specific emphasis on the innovations necessary to make timber high-rise construction successful and the use of VDC tools in the design and pre-construction process. The case study documents the project context, the design process, the business and industry drivers, and the motivation for construction. Moreover, it investigates the motivations for all stakeholders, identifies the challenges and constraints, and captures the innovative solutions that were utilized to ensure project success. The case study also documents the innovative use of VDC to support prefabrication and overall project coordination. Specifically, it investigates the role of the VDC integrators in the project, the paths of communications with the different project team members, and the inputs and outputs of each phase of design and construction. This research identified lessons learned that can be applied to other construction projects where timber is the main structural component and a heavy use of VDC and pre-fabrication is required. Use of timber and innovative methods in construction have been consistently rising in the past decade, and this research aims to provide a starting point for future efforts in mass timber high-rise construction.

Abstract:
Brazil's 1964-1985 military regime served as one of the principle catalysts for the leftist counterculture movement, Tropicália, which gave way to a new class of músicas engajadas. Later, during the period of redemocratization that followed the dictatorship, musicians extended the morphed the art into new forms, particularly through the use of rock-and-roll. The sociopolitical musical criticism that was formerly cloaked under the censorship stylistically transformed itself into an open, blunt, and much louder movement. Standing at the head of this new period of músicas engajadas was Renato Russo, frontman and lyricist of the Brock band Legião Urbana. At the height of political turmoil following the abertura, Russo confessed in a 1989 interview, "Até bem pouco tempo atrás, a gente realmente acreditava que poderia mudar alguma coisa. Depois, percebemos que não ia dar mais para mudar, mas continuamos acreditando" (Assad 207). This contradictory sentiment of both hope and despair in regards to the future of Brazil is present in a number of the lyricist's works. An analysis of Russo's músicas engajadas reveals a pattern of oppositions in Russo's relationship with the political and social state of Brazil, all of which can be categorized under the topic of hope versus disillusionment: an imagined utopian Brazil versus a perceived, present dystopia; progress versus stagnancy; and ironic criticism versus sincere aspirations for the future of Brazil. These contradictions are in part due to Russo's conflict as both an insider and outsider of the Brazilian experience, being raised physically close to the source of political unrest, but otherwise considered an outlier in terms of education, social circle, sexual orientation, and musical taste. This work analyzes the duality of hope and disillusionment in Legião Urbana's oeuvre in order to explore Russo's path in both criticizing and identifying the continuous missteps within the Brazilian state, and inspiring a new generation to correct the errors plaguing Brazil since colonial times.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and critically evaluate Christian theology of atonement and redemption, in order to contribute to contemporary theology of atonement and redemption. The purpose is reached through an analysis of the work of two contemporary feminist theologians; Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock. Hampson has formulated a sharp post-Christian position. Brock has distinguished herself through her critique of the Christian concept of atonement and through her contributions to reconciliation and redemption. Both Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock argue that Christian atonement-theology, primarily the so called objective model, is hurtful to children and victims of abuse and violence. They both argue that theological language is not innocent. At the same time, they illustrate broken relationships, sufferings, and problems they want to change, give theological interpretations of how that change is to take place and present methodologies on how to reach reconciliation between human beings and God as well as between human beings. In two steps I undertake a critical analysis of content and presuppositions in Daphne Hampson’s and Rita Nakashima Brock’s theologies of atonement and redemption. In the first step, I describe Hampson’s and Brock’s critique of Christian atonement-theology. I analyze their theological critique and theological construction in a model "from-transition-to". My critical analysis focuses especially on internal consistency. In the second part, the analysis of presuppositions, I explain basic principles upon which they shape their theology. The analysis is made up by the analytical concepts; theoretical arguments of knowledge, understandings of faith, and the position of the subject. I also analyze other essential concepts out of which gender is one. In the last chapter I present my own constructive contribution, structured by content and presuppositions. I argue that theology is both a critical and constructive discipline. In the content-response I discuss images of God, the tragic, the cross, and the hope. In the presuppositions-response I discuss the concept "space-in-between". In conclusion I propose that theology of atonement/redemption is shaped between post and Christian. I argue that space-in-between-perspectives are necessarily experimental and critical, a space on the border where marginalized voices are to be included.

Ao se estudar a cultura da juventude, devemos analisá-la dentro do contexto de uma sociedade de consumo. Por isso mesmo, ligada à música e à moda (não no seu sentido estrito). A cultura da juventude brasileira foi pautada principalmente pelas influências musicais internacionais, mas sempre dando uma cara nova aos movimentos juvenis que aqui se criavam, sendo o período entre as décadas de 1970 e 1980, o de maior efervescência e criatividade musical. O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar esse tema com base na sua relação com a indústria cultural, apontando as especificidades da atuação do Mercado, tanto para a mercantilização de movimentos espontâneos da juventude, quanto para as estratégias envolvidas na criação de fenômenos ou modismos. Entender como esse processo se deu no nosso país é essencial para refletir os rumos da juventude atual e sua relação com o consumo. A indústria cultural é formada por vários sistemas, sendo a mídia um deles. Por isso, com base em dois meios de comunicação impressos a revista Veja e o jornal Folha de São Paulo, tentou-se traçar a relação entre a abordagem midiática e a consolidação dos movimentos ou fenômenos musicais pelo mercado cultural.
When studying the culture of youth we should analyze it within the context of a consumer society. Therefore, connected to music and fashion (not in a strict sense). The culture of Brazilian youth has been mostly guided by international musical influences, but the youth movements created here in Brazil have always received a new look, especially between the 70s and 80s, the period with the greater effervescence and musical creativity. The goal of this work is to analyze this issue basing this analysis on its relation with cultural industry, pointing the specifics of markets performance both to the commercialization of spontaneous youth movements as well as to the strategies involved on the creation of phenomena and new fashions. Understanding how that process has happened in our country is essential to think about the directions of the current youth and its relation with consumption. The cultural industry is made up of various systems, including the media. Hence, based on two publications - Veja magazine and Folha de São Paulo newspaper, this work tries to describe the relationship between the media approach and the consolidation of musical movements, or phenomena, by the cultural market.

Abstract:
Global competition is pushing the composites industry to advance and become more cost effective. Liquid Composite Molding or LCM is a family of processes that has shown significant promise in its potential to reduce process times and cost while maintaining high levels of part quality. However, the majority of research and information on composite processes have been related to prepreg-autoclave processing which is significantly different than LCM. In order for LCM processes to gain large scale implementation, significant research is required in order to model and simulate the unique nature of the resin infusion process. The purpose of this research is to aid in the development of in situ void measurement and characterization during LCM processing, particularly for carbon fiber composites. This will allow for the gathering of important empirical data for the validation of models and simulations that aid in the understanding of void formation and movement during LCM. For such data to be useful, it needs to include details on the formation, mobility and evolution of the void over time during infusion. This was accomplished by creating a methodology that allowed for in situ images of voids to be captured during the infusion process. A clear mold was used to visually monitor infusions during RTM with UV dye and lighting to enhance contrast. Consecutive images were acquired through the use of macro lens photography. This method proved capable of yielding high quality images of a variety of in situ voids during infusions with carbon fiber composites. This is believed to be the first instance where this was accomplished. A second methodology was then developed for the analysis of the collected images. This was done by using ImageJ software to analyze and process the acquired images in order to identify and characterize the voids. Success was found in quantifying the size and circularity of a wide range of micro and macrovoids in both a satin weave and double bias NCF woven fabrics. To facilitate the burden of collecting large amounts of data, this process was made to be automated. A user generated macro script could be applied to large sets of images for rapid processing and analysis. This automated method was then evaluated against manually processed images to determine its overall effectiveness and accuracy as tool for validating void theory.
